A world has cute things and horrible things and beautiful things and terrible things and funny things and serious things. A game you play for a few hours and finish can get away with being one thing. A world that expects people to practically live in it needs a lot of things.
Warcraft was always cartoonish, but wasn't "cute" about it. They appealed to the metal head types of crowds.
