DK's AOE taunt ability. Don't think they will be as good as pallys when it comes to AOE tanking, but it is nice to see they can do it. This should be pretty handy, at least in 5 man instances.

This seems to be the DK's taunt/aggrogaining ability...but I have one question...

does it do that much damage per disease erupted? or just that much damage no matter how many diseases are erupted?

(this spell also gets .1APCoefficient...meaning it gets 10% of your ap added on as damage)

This ability IS a straight-up taunt. Even without any diseases, this forces all enemies to attack you for 3 seconds. Also, it does NOT consume the diseases. It just makes them "explode." I assume the eruption damage is the trigger to make them attack you, and perhaps even cause extra threat.

Well, it looks like your wrong. It says "Causes all disease effects on targets within 30 yards to painfully erupt, dealing 104 to 126 Shadow damage." Does it say anywhere in there saying consuming the diseases ?

It says "targets within 30 yards" in description. So it is a AoE taunt.

Is it just me or does this ability seem really weak?

In order to get diseases on multiple enemies, it's quite tricky and requires pestilence or unholy blight to do so.

After going to the trouble to do this, you deal a mere 143 damage, which probably has a horrible coefficient, and consume the diseases which would almost certainly do more damage unless you managed to time them all at the last tick?

I don't get it. Why would ANYONE use this? Am I missing something, here?

OK. I'm being totally honest here.

I've only used blood boil about..6 times.

From 55-68.

Normally when I AoE I go IT>PS>Pestilence>Death and Decay>Unholy Blight/Gargoyle.

The damage on Blood Boil doesn't seem to be enough to warrant the Blood rune, I'd much rather use that one blood rune to go towards my death and decay as it does more damage.

I really hope this gets changed to something a long the line of "For each disease on your target your blood boil gains x amount of damage" or something along those lines.

Blood boil is a purely tanking ability, it is not truly meant for AOE damage. You want AOE damage?
Do Death and Decay, do icy touch/plague strike and then use pestilence. Your diseases will be all over. However, if you are in frost presence and tanking, spreading your diseases is great for AOE tanking, and blood boil is that "snap aggro" ability that makes the threat generation jump up, instead of a steady increase.
Blood boil is not a dps ability.

in pvp this spell will be pretty good if u have the glyph :). for those who don't know the glyph adds another effect.... slow for 5 seconds which is good in pvp

So after I use my icy touch, plague strike, pestilence, and howling wind I am left with 1 blood rune. If blood boil isn't meant to aoe dps than what aoe ability can I use my blood rune for? Seems to me it is just as much a part of the rotation as all of the other spells you listed.

Is it the best at damage? No, but if you are suggesting I use Death and Decay before using Blood Boil because I might pull threat than I don't know what to say. Especially when Death and Decay specifically says "This ability produces a high amount of threat." Seems to me I would pull threat easier with a death and decay than a blood boil.

If you have Death Rune Mastery, you can apply both diseases and spread them, then Death Strike to get 2 Death Runes on the next refresh and use Blood Boil 3/4 times in a row.
I guess this is the way you AoE as blood spec.

from what i hear, Blood Boil scales with AP so with enough AP it can potentially become more powerful then BS, maybe even HS

From my experience the only use for this ability is to hit far away mobs when they spawn as a tank.

An example being in AN first boss when he spawns a lot of adds, and you don't have enough runes to use D&D just hit bloodboil to get them on you fast, these mobs die too fast to make pestilence worth using and blood boil has a longer range.

Other than that.. basically useless...

Is it 117 to 143 Shadow damage per disease? IE if you have frost fever and blood plague on the target to they take (117 - 143)x2 damage? Or is it just 117 - 143 as long as they have at least 1 disease on the target?

Not a DPS ability?
As an Unholy DK, i turn on Unholy Blight and run in, Death and Decay, Plague Strike, Icy Touch, Pestilence and finally Blood boil. Tops damage meters easily beating Blizzard mages and Seed of Corruption locks.

This ability has excellent PvP utility.

Being snared and kited is one the DK's worst weaknesses, and death grip isn't always ready for use when you need it. This along with Glyph of Blood Boil gives us the ability to use a second snare when needed, and makes a great arena ability for controlling the other team.

An excellent way to knock out rogues in arenas now since it no longer requires a disease to do damage. This and Death and Decay make it challenging for any rogue to sap or open on you or your partner!

Currently this will pop rogues out of stealth even if no damage is done to them (e.g. rogue has Power word shield on him). Not sure if this is intended or bug.

Wierd bug? i found. While leveling my mace skill i found out that casting twice in a row gives you +plus weapon skill :)

Edit: Apperently casting DnD also grants you skill :o

Do you still do the extra damage if you do not have any diseases on the target, but a fellow DK has a disease or two up? I'm guessing that you don't, but I wanted to check. The mechanism for the extra damage isn't particularly clear.

I found this is really good to catch those slippery little rogues that like to Vanish as you draw closer to them. If your other runes are on their CD jup pop Blood Boil around where they vanished. Good chance of catching them.

Keep in mind it's absolutely critical to keep melee mobs in front of you since you can't doge or parry hits from behind

You can actually dodge from behind but sence dk are more focused on parry i can see where your going with this

I did a little bit of non-professional testing on this ability with a level 66 Death Knight and have come to this conclusion:

Blood Boil WILL NOT do more damage to a target with two (or three) disease as compared to one.

In other words, if you have only Frost Fever on your Blood Boil victim, it will still do the same amount of damage as if it had Frost Fever and Blood Plague. This may help for snap threat on Frost Death Knights (Glyphed Howling Blast or normal Hungering Cold spread Frost Fever).

That being said, in no situation should you IGNORE Blood Plague and fail to apply it. It still generates threat, damage, and increases the damage (and subsequently threat) of all other abilities by a desirable margin.

Not sure if this information is elsewhere on the page... I have places to be and wanted to post this up fast. Sorry if someone beat me to it!

I recently hit 80 on my frost spec DK, dual wielding.

Later i looted a better 2h mace (219, while i have 2 tank weapons on ilvl200), so just for fun i went to use it.

On AoE mobs, i noticed bloodboil does a considerable ammount more damage then being dual whield, also Howling blast seems to hit way harder. Are both skills based on your weapon damage or something? Since my str/AP was basicly the same.

Now i wonder, on AoE is it more adviced to go 2h and swap back to 2x 1h if u face single targets? On a few occasions in UK i managed to hit 8k DPS with pretty crap gear, something i never done on my dual wield setup (same gear, only weapon was different).

Is not necessary to combine with Pestilence whilst tanking, with vengeance it is blooming powerful. Pestilence will help, but there shouldn't be a need to use it at the beginning pull. Maybe if you start tanking more than ten...

For anyone still wondering, Blood Boil does NOT count disease. In other words, it'll get the same bonus regardless of whether its 1 disease or 2 disease. It's either a bonus, or no bonus, it doesn't stack/count bonuses.

This means that while AoE tanking, you don't need to use blood plague at all. Plant a death and decay, icy touch 1 time, then use Prest+Blood Boil spam. Use your spare Frost/Unholy runes on Death Strike. This is how you're intended to tank.

Usual rotation is like this:
DnD(1 unh) Icy(1 frost) Pest+boil(2 blood) Death Strike (1 unh+Frost)
That will have used all 6 runes very. After that point just spam Boil and Death Strike. Mobs should die without ever having left your axe.
The reason for going with Frost Fever instead of Blood Plague is simple, FF slows enemy attacks, so this is the disease you should use with Pest/Boil. The spare unholy rune can be thrown into Death and Decay.

Against a boss, or 1-3 mobs, you can use Heart Strike instead.(It hits 3 targets) Here you'd want to use Blood Plague to max the Heart Strikes, but here you'll be using the blood runes on the strike, and therefore, not Prest/boil.

The bread and butter of AoE for tank DK's. Combine this with pestilence and you'll have strong snap agro at any time. Also does a fair amount of damage.

Blood Boil deals ((711 to 869) + 19.2% of your AP) baseline in 5.x. It deals an additional 50% damage to targets infected with either Frost Fever or Blood Plague diseases.

Edit note: Blood Boil base damage and AP scaling was doubled in the MoP beta.

Edit 2: Blood Boil had its static damage increased and its multiplier reduced. The tooltips are not yet updated. As per GC's post, the new values are 3474 to 4244 static damage plus 11% of AP.

As of November 4th 2012, this ability deals absurd amounts of damage at low levels. At 56, I was easily hitting for 1700 with one disease up, and critting close to 4k.

Blood Boil hits extremely hard at all levels - even on single target, it does more damage than Heart Strike.

Blood Boil also scales much better with Vengeance's bonus attack power, which makes it even more superior to Heart Strike (even against just a single target).

With Roiling Blood talent it will also spread and refresh your diseases (as blood), thus making it truly 100% superior to Heart Strike.
