This rare is found in the centeral pandarian zone, Vale of Eternal Blossom. It is huge and flies around, very easy to spot.

Mount Drop:

This rare spawn drops the mount 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳... however, it is unattackable while its protective buff, 雨云笼罩, is still active.

To Remove the Protect Buff:

To remove the protective buff 雨云笼罩 from Alani, you need a 天水晶 and it is created from combining 10x 天之裂片. This is where things get tough though. If you have not noticed, 天之裂片 and 天水晶 are BoP. AND... unfortunately... they are super rare drops from all MoP NPC's that are level 90. However, if you collect 10 of these crystal fragments, you can combine them into a 天水晶 and fight this rare dragon spawn.

How to Collect Shards:

Option 1 - Level 90 creatures in 锦绣谷, which makes sense if you listen to the backstory behind the rare spawn from 罗琪 in the zone.
Option 2 - Daily quests that reward 锦绣谷宝藏 have a chance to drop the shards as well. Check out the items page for drop chance % as more people do the dailys.

Fighting (and tagging) this Rare Spawn:

Blizzard seems to have been smart with this rare spawn. When you use your 天水晶 on the dragon, you channel about 20% of the dragons health away and tag it for yourself. So the kill cant be ninja'ed from you. This was fixed to be actually true on a hotfix on October 25th, 2012 thankfully! Prior to that, the kill could be ninja'ed from you. As for this rare's health, it is SUPER low compared to all the other MoP rares. At level 90, you will only need mostly Heroic dungeon gear or the first tier of PVP gear to kill it without much problem. At level 90, this is easily done. Seems gathering the crystals is the only challenge in getting this rare spawn killed.

Rarity of this Spawn:

This Rare Spawn is unique from all other mount dropping rares in game so far. When it spawns, it flies around the entire 锦绣谷 zone and is very, very visible. It has a despawn timer... but respawns often when it despawned due to not being killed. Respawn timer from being killed is still being determined. So while it is a rare spawn, the real rare thing about this mount is that very few people will be lucky enough to farm enough of the crystals to attack it.

There are 2 (yes, TWO) reputation requirements to be able to learn and ride this mount:

Exalted with 云端翔龙骑士团 - This faction teaches you 云端翔龙骑术 and without it you can not mount your rare spawn mount.
Exalted with 至尊天神 - This faction must be exalted to learn your new rare spawn mount and not have it collecting dust in your bags.

Alani's origin as told by 罗琪:

Legends tell of a great battle that took place in this very vale, turning the golden fields to crimson with the blood of many brave monks. The armies of Lei Shen of Thunder King, emperor of the mogu, fought brutally, but were eventually overcome.

For days following the fall of Lei Shen, the vale was shrouded in a cloud of the deepest black. Summoned by Lei Shen in his final moments, the otherworldly storm blanketed the vale with rainfall and struck jagged spears of lightning into the hills.

The blood of the fallen was washed away by the storm and carried to Whitepetal Lake, turning the waters a deep red. With its final breath, the storm struck the center of the lake, igniting the very water itself. The lake burned with a crimson hue for many days.

When the blaze subsided, a cloud serpent hatching could be seen flying around the center of the lake. Its scales sparked with storm and fire, and where it flew, great clouds formed in the sky. My people named it Alani, the Stormborn.

They say that Alani can only see the flash of the greatest lightning, and may only hear the echo of the greatest thunder. Should you wish to get her attention, you will need to harness the very essence of the sky that spawned her.

Alani the Stormborn is a level 92 rare spawn located flying around the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. He has a buff called 雨云笼罩 which makes him immune from being attacked. This buff is removed from an item called 天水晶 which is created by combining 10x 天之裂片.

Today I pretty much confirmed that Alani the Stormborn is infact the MoP version of the TLPD/Aeonaxx. After collecting 10x Skyshards I turned them into 1x Sky Crystal which allowed me to attack and kill Alani. When looted he dropped the 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳. Skyshards can apparantly drop from most/all mobs in Vale of Eternal Blossoms and supposedly also from the loot bag obtained from the final quest of the dailies. The drop rate from the mobs is exceptionally low. I think my longest gap between drops was around 24 hours of grind time (over several days ofc) and shortest was about 4 hours - RNG can be a pain. I found the best place to grind was in the north to north western area of the Vale where you find many 'Trickster' mobs. They have a relatively short respawn (2-3mins) and there's quite a few of them which can be AoE'd down together. Here's a screenshot of a drop: http://i50.tinypic.com/2qalabm.jpg .

I was wondering, do you have to have cloud serpent riding to loot the mount off Alani? Or can you loot it without having cloud serpent riding and just keep it in your bags until you can use it? :)

Collecting the 天水晶 is definitely a preferred method and a huge improvement, at least in my opinion, of killing rares like these. It is a positive change for mount collectors who were stuck camping mobs in previous expansions.

Rare mount-dropping mobs in the past like Time-Lost Proto-Drake and Aeonaxx required you to camp and wait at various spawn points, but not without fear of losing the tag to another player nearby. In the case of this rare mob, you need to have the 天水晶 before you can even claim the mob. There will be no reason to try to steal the Cloud Serpent from someone already about to kill him if you don't have the Crystal, because you won't be able to kill him (Hopefully this is a bug, but Alani can currently be ninja'd from you if you remove her shroud and someone else hits her first before you do. I would not ever recommend spamming general or trade about your crystal, and stay away from anyone else when you're about to get her down -- This was hotfixed. Alani can no longer be ninja'd from you. Sorry, trolls ;P).

This way it's based more on how much work you want to put into your mount, as opposed to "I just got lucky one day," or waiting for days or weeks only for someone else to take your hard-earned prize after showing up for the first time for five minutes, or while leveling. They have really wised up on treating mount collectors with care, which is something to appreciate.

I imagine, that since Alani is a "Rare," s/he will still require some extra effort to find, regardless of having the Crystal (EDIT: there has been some claims that Alani respawns quite quickly, making this not a "rare beast," but only making the mount what is rare. Again, a hell of a decent change to the system), but at least you can rest assured that if you have the Crystal, and you see Alani, and you want the mount s/he (tried using a "gender of target" macro, and it said s/he was "unknown") drops, it will be nearly impossible for someone to snag it from you, especially if they don't care enough to put in the time.

I'm very happy with this change, and I hope they continue to make more just like it!

7.0 EDIT: I don't know whether or not the above information is true any longer, due to the implementation of the shared tag and shared loot system. There's a chance that multiple people can tag it at once. If you really, really don't want to share your fortune with others, then I would suggest not talking about it before you attempt to claim your prize, and do it out of view of others. If someone can confirm that the loot and tag can be shared, it'd be very helpful.

On another note, /golfclap to Blizzard for bringing back "rare camping" in WoD.

It's going to develop back into camping unless they reduce the drop rate on Skyshards. I already have 7 just from casually farming on and off a few times today and she has already been killed on my server a day after release. She is quite large and set off my NPC scan when I was inside Shrine of the Two Moons so it's not going to be a big mystery if she's up or not, it's just going to be a race to who gets there first.

I killed this rare today on live, after farming roughly 12,000 mobs in Vale for the 10 Skyshards needed to drop the shield. I farmed the mobs more for motes, but chose to farm in Vale so I'd get Skyshards along with them.

Works the same way as on beta, the Sky Crystal drops the boss's health by about 200K when used. The range on the Sky Crystal ability is absurd so you can tag it from the ground.

Any 90 mob in Vale that drops loot can drop a Skyshard. The drop rate is roughly 1/1000. I got 3 in a 5 minute span at one point, and didn't get one for two days at another.

The mount still requires August Celestials - Exalted, so I can't even use it for another month or however long it takes to get there.

Respawn time on live appears rather short. I killed it around 8PM EST and it was back up 4 hours later.

Has anyone killed it in a group? Did you get to roll for it or was it just binded to whoever had the crystal? We've been having a group farm the crystals together and giving them to one person, so we're just wondering what to expect.

I got this mount on live servers today. My friend came with me and passed on the roll just to see if the roll comes up. Confirmed, anyone in the group can roll on the reins. You can sell this mount IE: Someone can pay you to join your group and they can roll on the mount even though you "summoned" it. Hope this helps.

So apparently, your tag on Alani can be ninja'd on live (5.0.05) when you've used your Skycrystal, resulting in someone else receiving the Reins. Happened last night on my server, Auchindoun EU.

I just got an Alani kill on Lothar EU. =)

Had a friend helping farming after I had 3天之裂片's. I let him have the 祥和微粒's dropping as a deal for him to pass on shards.

I've had 6 shards dropping yesterday/today. I'm sorry if you take this as bragging. I kinda hoped it make some people getting their hopes up abit for when they farm. I've also had my days with no shards when I farmed alone. When I helped my friend farming shards here the other day he had 2 dropping in a row. We had lots of greenies, 风绒布 and 3 BoE epic's. It can really pay off to farm this with a good friend. It's much more fun. Sadly it seems Blizzard have nerfed the droprate on windwool and green items by much. Therefore it is less profitfull to farm the the mobs than previously.

I've had my shards for my drake dropping in these mobs.

Stonebark Trickster
The Stone Bark Trickster's is deffo worth it to farm. Some of them are nicely grouped up. They are easy to kill and spawns fast. Theres the area with 2 kind of big packs. When we could, we would pull the group on the top down to the group of the bottom. They are not to far away from eachother to evade. Those who farm these mobs prolly know where I mean. The bad things about Trickster's is that sometimes they are a part of Golden Lotus daileys so there will be more people killing them, makeing them less likely to farm. At least on high populated realms. It can also be annoying with their 诡计 as they just copy themselfs.

Mogu Statue
When you try to agro a Mogu Statue then be carefull if you are on a flying mount. If you got agro and fly off the ground it will reset and become inactive again.

Mottled Cow
This mob no longer spawns instantly after being killed, so it's not so much of a potentional farm spot. However the Slateskin trouble makers could be dependable on wich Golden Lotus daileys are up. Sometimes there's fire around in the area and they run into it and gain a fire debuff. You just need to tag them and they will die fairly quick from their fire debuff. I would still rather recommend Stonebark Tricksters or Shao Tien mobs after the hotfix of the Mottled Cow.

You can also farm Shao Tien mobs if you want 远古郭莱储物箱钥匙's. They are keys for to open 远古郭莱储物箱's. The Cache's contains abit gold and 郭莱圣物, occasionally 雷电圣物 together with the blue version. If you want to know more of these items simply click on the links.

The 天之裂片's seems to be able to drop of most/all mobs and from doing 考古学 in 锦绣谷 .
They can also drop from 锦绣谷宝藏 wich you get from doing your Golden Lotus daileys. They can also drop in 一小袋货物 wich can drop from rares spawns in Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

If you got problems with too much other players farming, get invite of a friend from another server with less people ect. Then you will be on their server instead of your own.

You can invite people from other realms to kill Alani on your own realm. Other people in your group can loot the mount.

Alani can be pulled from Golden Terrace at the Shrine of Two Moons wich is handy for the Horde players. At least on PvP realms. Many players Don't have respect for others when pulling Alani. When my friend was going to pull her we got attacked by 2 horde players. We just zerged Alani so she died fast and he could go loot her.

~~You need to be carefull when you pull Alani with the Sky crystal. Other players around you will be able to tag her as soon as雨云笼罩 is getting removed~~. This has been hot fixed, other players can no longer tag Alani when you use your Sky Crystal. She's not hard to kill even for a newly dinged lv 90.

Even if you have collected Skyshards, killed Alani and looted the 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳 once before, you can still loot Skyshards and create a 天水晶 and do the same over again.

You need both 云端翔龙骑术 and 至尊天神 exalted to learn and ride the mount. To unlock the the August Celestial's daileys you need 金莲教 reverted. You wont need to hurry collecting the shards since all the reputation farming will take very long.

I've played my char for 4 days at lv 90, I've still done a few heroic instances and few other things but else i've just been farming.whilst farming the shards for MY drake. The shortest amount of time i've spent on farming 10 shards were when a friend and I were farming shards together. We had 3 dropping nearly in a row from Shao Tien mobs after a few hours. The next day I figured out the Mottled Cow could drop them aswell. I did not have much time to farm because of work. The day after that we had the 5 last shards dropping in lesser than 1 day. As I mentioned earlier the Mottled Cow is not spawning instantly anymore so you cannot spawn kill it like before.

Just killed her on Drak'Thul EU. I encountered the bug when you can't interact with an object so I couldn't loot her. I panicked there a little, but it has an easy solution.
target her with command /tar Alani and bind a random key for Interact with target (key bindings - targeting functions)... or just drag another mob next to her body, kill it and loot with AoE loot.

Now to get the August Celestials reputation.

I just got the mount this morning in "Les Sentinelles" EU server. It took me exactly 100 "Spirits of Harmony" to finally get the last shard. I must admit I spent most of the days farming but it took me about 7 days to get all the 10 shards.

Also, remember that the chances for the shards to drop are extremely low, which means it could happen to you what happened to me(3 days without seeing a shard drop). However, seeing 2 or more shards in a day of farming could also happen, it's not that uncommon.

Another piece of information I have is that you can pull Alani from pretty much anywhere in the Vale, as long as you can target it, you don't need to stand on top of a mountain to pull it.

I must thank the information found in here that proved to be very helpfull in getting this great mount. I farmed the "Trickster" mobs refered by the posters above and they surely are a very good way of farming crystals simply because they have very low HPs and spawn really fast, so even if there are 2 other people farming in that same spot, you don't really have to worry about it.

I finished farming Skyshards last night on live and killed her. Using the Sky Crystal is a short channeled spell but she aggros almost immediately, and to be safe I would suggest that you kill her during a low population server time or not announce that you're bringing her down until you've already killed her. She can be tagged out from underneath you, apparently.

I pulled her down on a jutting hilltop just south of the Shrine of Two Moons, near the Mogu colossi. She doesn't have any knockbacks or special abilities of any kind and goes down very quickly. Bring a few friends you trust, though, just in case you attract an audience. Once you've looted her corpse, Alani despawns within a few minutes, so take your victory screenshots fast.

I killed her last night at approximately 12:30am server time and more than six hours later she has not yet respawned, so she seems to have a long respawn timer.

All told, getting this mount took me about a week and a half of farming 6-12 hours daily. I made 25k gold on loot drops alone (and that's after sending every single dropped green to the guild enchanter) and pulled out around 10-15 Spirits of Harmony a day. Now that I have her, I have about two and a half weeks of August Celestials dailies left before I'm actually able to ride her.

Just killed Alani on Live servers today, and I noticed a strange occurance that nearly gave me a heart attack. When I used the Sky Crystal to engage Alani, it channeled the health away and removed the nimbus cloud like it was supposed to, but Alani did not aggro me. She just kept flying away like I wasn't there. I was never put into combat, so I mounted up and flew to it to attack it. I didn't wait long enough to see if it would reset, but if this ever happens to you when you use your sky crystal, attack it ASAP before it outranges you.

18.35 today at Argent Dawn I killed Alani on my Monk Nichan. The fight was really easy in full blue PVP gear as Windwalker but I did have my girlfriend as a healer just incase to not risk it.

I did farm Mogu's at the western portion of the Vale of the Blossom for few days to get Keys for Golden Lotus and recieved 9 crystals during my key farming. So I spent additional 1 day to get the last crystal.

If you really want this mount I highly recommend you do not mind hours of farmign same mobs all over again because that's what it takes, plus while you farm the mobs you've chance to get nice rep with Golden Lotus in the meanwhile.

So those of you who are farming for this mount goodluck and keep it up since in the end you will get this lovely mount.

Only badside is... I need to farm August Celestial reputation now, only friendly at the moment :(

it took me about a week of farming for 4+ hours a day. i used the spot where the mantid were spawning endlessly on the great wall. you have to be careful if you use that spot though. the zoning is diffrent on diffrent sections of the wall...you dont want some 50+ mob kill to not have a chance of proc'ing a shard. also my kill was on sunday, she has not respawned yet. even though i dont have all the reps needed to ride her. i assume once people gather enough shards, camping the spawn will be the new hard part. farm your shards now!

in total i gained
11 skyshards (rng gave me two at then end when i needed one)
3 epics (476 ilv)
13 blues (450 ilv useable @ 80)
3 bank tabs of windwool
more greens then i can count.
40k looted gold (roughly give or take a few k)
620 motes of harmony
time spent farming
34 hours 18 minutes

still want the mount?

keep in mind this was only so quick because i did it as blood and ran by tagging mobs...as many as i could...trying not to get over run by new spawns. i did kill myself and pull too much once or twice...but if no one was farming the same spot i was, it actually was a pretty smooth process.

I'm surprised this hasn't been noted yet. When you use the crystal on Alani, Alani does NOT come to you as if you attacked. Alani will continue to fly around its circuit until you hit it. When you decide to use your Sky Crystal, be sure you can hit Alani with something really quickly. If you're a melee, be prepared to jump on a mount, fly up, and stab Alani. Be sure you'll survive the fall, or else you're really boned.

I'm not sure how much help this will be, but I know Alani was killed and looted around 5pm server time (US Frostmourne) and 12 hours later she is in the sky again.

I haven't been looking out for it so it's likely it was up much earlier.

Hopefully this gives some indication of the respawn time, or at least comfort knowing it's not lengthy.

I got this mount yesterday after a long grind, than i realized this mount is not even rare nor unique about it, not even near as TLPD or Aoenaxx, since when ppls Exalted with August Celestials u can buy this mount for a fews 1000's G and everyone can get there hand on it not just few ppls. So what's the point of trying hard to get this mount? save fews 1000's G big deal!, why not just wait until u Exalted with August Celestials and buy it, again its a waste of time farming Skyshard. i've made my point. peace:)

As of today 20-10-2012 阿拉尼 does not get tagged and does not get aggroed by using the skycrystal on her.

The 天水晶 removes the shield and nothing else, which means Alani is free for all after 天水晶 is used on her.

Whoever tags her after the shield is down, gets the 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳

I am not sure how "cool" it is to link your youtube videos in this forum, but you should do a youtube search if you plan to take her down, and take whatever precautions you can (like doing it in the late hours) to make sure you get the mount drop.

When I used my Sky Crytal, she just flew off with her shield down, and I was very lucky nobody exept my guildies were around to take the kill.

This is incorrect.

The mount sold by 莲蕊贤者 & 白心贤者 (Horde and Alliance August Celestial Quartermasters) is the 雷霆天神云端翔龙缰绳, a yellowish/red cloud serpent with lightning effects. The mount dropped by Alani, 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳 is all red apart from a yellow chest/black spines. They are indeed two different mounts, albeit with similar models.

The fight against Alani is not very difficult, however, just pulling Alani straight from the sky anywhere in Vale of the Eternal Blossoms is risky.

So when I killed my Alani, I made sure it was an area that was an easy fight for melee classes, and that noone was there.

So I found this spot after flying around Vale for a while before encountering Alani:

Alani Safe Spot

The spot as seen on the map in the picture is located a bit over Guo-Lai Halls. And Alani flies extremely close, as I drew a line where about how far away he is.

It's a great idea to find a safe spot for the fight, as some players lost their tag on Alani due to being too far away, lost the tag due to some bug or what not. You can't fail here cause he flies so low and close for an easy tag.

Hope this information is a bit useful for a safe kill!

Just killed Alani on SilverHand (A) today with a GM watching and cheering for me as I kill her because I lost my sky crystal due to using it on Alani but did not actually aggro onto her then she bugged and despawned. After 7 tickets and dealing with 6 GMs that won't do anything to restore my crystal saying that i used the crystal with intention (not destroyed or vendor'd) and the problem was on the mob itself so they couldn't restore it. The 7th GM actually went to her supervisor and agreed to restore it for me. So, I'm a happy space goat :) If this ever happen to you, just keep putting in tickets in-game AND on battle-net site until you get the awesome GM that's in there somewhere.

Note to all in case, pull Alani on a hill but not on the very top so she won't knock you down and you die of falling.

A guide to farming Skyshards and defeating Alani <the Stormborn> for Reins of the Thundering Ruby Cloud Serpent

阿拉尼 <the Stormborn> is a lvl 92 rare Dragon that is found flying around The Vale of Eternal Blossoms in Pandaria. Alani is MoP's Time-Lost Proto drake/Aeonaxx, but unlike them she is easily found. She does however, have a buff 雨云笼罩 that makes her immune to attack. The buff is removed with a 天水晶 which is made by combining 10x 天之裂片. Once killed she 100% drops the mount雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳. You will need to be exalted with The August Celestials to use this mount.

Skyshards have a low drop rate of about 1/1000. They can be found in 锦绣谷宝藏 (from Golden Lotus Dalies), 一小袋货物(from rare spawns in the Vale) and looted from most mobs found in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms. There is also a chance to get shards from archaeology within the Vale of Eternal Blossoms.
These shards will have to be farmed. During this farm grind you will get a ton of gold from greens, motes of harmony, and cloth. I also found a nice epic ring, and a few nice blues to sell. Best times to farm are early in the morning and late at night when others are not questing. Some days multiple shards will drop for you, other days you will get none. RNG based. The add on Rarity will help you track your drop rate.

The best mobs to farm are the "Sprites" or "Tricksters" found in the vale. They are of low health and respawn fairly quick. They can be found depending on the dailies from Golden Lotus. Slateskin Troublemakers are best to farm when Mistffall Village is on fire do to the daily "My Town, It's on Fire!" During this daily the sprites run through the town kicking over buckets of fire. Once they do they get a DOT debuff "on fire!" which will slowly kill them. You can tag them and just wait for them to die. This is where name plates become very helpfull in targeting them. I picked a spot near the cow so I could pull that too. While the cow no longer insta respawns, it still can drop shards, and will repspawn every minute. From here, you can easiy tag all 4 incoming sprites and the cow.

If this daily is not available, you will have to farm the Stonebark Tricksters at Ruins Rise. These are found in groups, and are easily AOE'd down. They respawn fairly quick. Go from group to group killing all near by sprites and repeat.

Killing Alani <the Stormborn>
As of 5.0.5 It is no longer possible for other players to tag Alani while the Sky Crystal is being channeled. Once you have all 10 Skyshards, you will right click to combine them into your Sky Crystal. Find a high up place to engage her. Group only with friends you trust as they will be able to loot the mount as well, making this mount able to be sold/given to others. Alani has a huge hit/loot box. Once you find a place to engage her, right clicking your crystal will remove the buff and start a cast bar draining about 20% health from her right from the start. This will consume your crystal. Alani will be drawn to you to DPS her down. Her only ability Lightining Breath does 4625 to 5375 Nature damage inflicted every 1 sec. This fight is very short, and a lvl 90 in Heroic dungeon blues should have no issues. Once dead loot your mount and enjoy. :)

My Story:
Alani killed 10/27/2012 around 1am on Grizzly Hills US.
As a lvl 90 BM Hunter, this grind took me 28 hours of farming over a three week duration. 9/10 shards from Tricksters, 1 from Golden Lotus daily bag. 7k from vendoring greens,100 plus stacks of cloth, 70 plus Spirts of Harmony (motes x10), 4 blues, and one epic ring. There were times I could of sworn the droprate had been lowered, or that I had the worse luck in the world. And other times I would get back to back shards. But I didn't quit once I started farming for at least 3-4 hours. I sometimes skipped dailies and farmed all day. Keep at it!

Now for the rep to ride her. Sighhh.

As well as pulling Alani when traffic in the zone is down to a minimum, the best place to attack Alani would be by the lake in the north west corner in the Vale. Its out of the way of most quests and Alani pats right over it.

Pulled Alani there a little while ago and had no trouble killing her.

I found the best time to farm shards was when troublemakers were up at Mistfall Village and were stealing kegs. Good luck to those farming these shards, this mount is definitely worth the time and effort needed to farm the shards.

Ok sorry for my noobness and my stupid question but i have a question since i am in a pvp server and i got here because i wanted to be with my friends they all left WoW Boo Hoo -_- anyway if you're killed either by alani {doubt it} or by another faction member does alani stays tagged to you or does it takes back its immune status and you lose your crystal?

Alani has less than 1 day respawn timer. She isn't a "true rare" like or 奥伊纳克斯. I killed her yesterday for the 雷霆红玉云端翔龙缰绳 and now she is flying in the Vale again exactly after 24 hours.

I will share a story of RNG, may it be friendlier to you than it was to me.

My character has been 90 for a little over 4 months now. My first, and only, 天之裂片 has dropped for me in the cache on the very first set of Lotus dailies that I did. I knew already what they were used for and, being a mount collector, I took it as a sign that I should try to get Alani too. After all, I had farmed tons of old raids and instances, this would just be an open world farm, right?

Oh, how wrong I was.

Every day, for four months, I had invested all the free time I had into farming Skyshards once my dailies and raids were out of the way. Let's say an average of 4 hours a day - in some it was 1, in some it was way over 10, depending on my work schedule and other factors, but usually it was somewhere between 3 and 5.
Every day, for four months, I came to the Vale, eager, looking forward to this. I'm on WrA Horde side, and in these four months I've seen about 10 people with the mount. I've whispered these people out of curiosity, and while not all answered, I got these times:

'Realm first' - He was riding the mount in the third week I think, I've bumped into him in a Sha group. He was a cool guy, told me he wanted the realm first Pandaren Ambassador, so he had farmed 远古郭莱储物箱钥匙 to unlock Shado Pan and Celestials asap. He told me he farmed for them over the course of two days after he hit 90 and during this time grabbed about 8 天之裂片, the last two coming from his later dailies for Lotus.

That cool paladin - He had already been exalted both factions when he started the farm, it took him three days of roughly 6 hours a day to get them, apparently he hadn't gotten any beforehand.

That guy on /2 - He kept trying to sell Alani's drop for 'serious offers' for a couple of weeks now. I'm not sure what price he's hoping for and what he has been offered, all I asked was how long it took him to get the shards. Apparently, he had them by the time he was revered, most of them dropping from the caches, and wasn't interested in the mount personally.

The rest of the guys didn't really stand out - they had farm periods of roughly 2-4 weeks, the average Wowhead report.
I congratulated all these guys and went on with my own farm. But I wasn't getting any shards. I kept changing places - I tried the tricksters, I tried the Mogu on the western side (and bumped into 灵魂窃贼康戈 more times than I care to count - made a few guys hunting rares happy with my report, though), I tried the Mogu in the first hub (which I quickly gave up - the competition wasn't worth it), I sometimes cherrypicked the mobs reported to have the highest drop at that time (the list changed a few times). Nothing.

However, I'm standing on over 75k gold made from this farm. I've gotten:
- A lot of 远古郭莱储物箱钥匙, most of them after I was exalted with Lotus already. I don't mind, though, they're worth 25g each and I've gotten a few 熊猫人盛宴, 祥和之灵 and 帝王丝绸 from them.
- Three world epics. 2 x 爱德华的便鞋 (what are the odds? ... that was a lame pun, eh?) and 1 x 多莉的奢华.
- Countless blues and greens, auctioned the blues, disenchanted the greens.
- Countless 风绒布, fashioned into tailoring items or stored away for future use.
- Over 2000 祥和微粒.

All in all, I don't regret the grind, so far at least. I just wanted to share to give you guys hope, because tons of those 'I got it in 3 days of farming' aren't helping anyone who is a little more unlucky. I'm certain your grind will be far better and you'll be far luckier than me at least!

Just about 3am PST, Dalvengyr .... barely 1100 people playing this server, should be perfect time to attack. Let's see, those mountains at the statues of the Golden Pagoda look like a good spot. Just draw her in and she'll fall there, high above the ground where no one should see.

Waiting, waiting..... okay..... here she comes….. don’t screw this up, its an easy fight.

Casting sky crystal. Okay, it's working, …. got her. Here she comes .... any second nowwwwww.... OKAY she's attacking.

Wait a minute? WTF! She’s hitting me..... how come my attacks aren't hitting her! Why can't I get line of sight, what the hell! ... OMG, she set herself below a spear on one of the statues. She can attack somehow, but you're not getting line of sight.

(adrenaline madness) Okay, what to do?

Maybe I can just wait and she realigns? Ya, okay ….. but what if someone sees her? What if someone steals my kill? I've read about that @#$% GOD, …what if she resets? Can that even HAPPEN!

Okay, okay, okay ... THINK DAMMIT,…. THINK!

She’s right above the pagoda complex. Okay. So, …you can walk out to the end of the statue's arm there and probably get line of sight. Annnnnd? Geezuz, if I kill her she’ll fall directly onto the pagoda complex where players get their dailies.

Ummm … lets see, it’s 2:58am PST. OMG IDIOT, that’s 5:58am server! DAILIES WILL RESET ANY MINUTE!

The longer I wait she could reset. And, what if someone’s already seen her? I could kill where she is, but she’ll fall in just about the worst place possible. THINK MAN ... would blizz even help if she reset? They don't care if someone ninja’s the mount so why fix a reset? Just DEAL with it!

When Alani is passing by the Tu Shen Burial Grounds while you're doing 采菇热.. and you happen to loot a 厚味菇 around 51,69.. Alani can get hit by the 厚味菇之尘 and she'll become more red than the usual, and her winds will be red too.

I nearly crapped myself the other day when I hit her with my Sky Crystal and saw someone right behind her, on his flying mount, who just dropped off the mount and engaged her. Thankfully, it turns out the Sky Crystal not only removes the shield, but also deals some damage to her. This means you'll have tagged her, and some jerkoff can't just tail her for hours on end, wait for someone to use the crystal, then swoop in and ninja the kill. But I didn't notice this until she hit the ground and I got the loot, I was too busy thinking "DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT".

I killed it today and got my mount but something strange happened that made me panic: I used the crystal and removed the shield in horde shrine, but it didn't aggro me and kept flying, its health was regenerating, I saw 2 people quickly mounting and going to attack it but it was already tagged by my char so I just mounted and attacked it with my parachute.
I thought it would have aggroed after using the crystal, that almost made me die by heart attack lol
Anyway I /spitted those 2 who tried to ninja it.

I believe when you kill him and obtain his mount, you should get an achievement because if you take the time to actually farm out these shards, it would be totally worth an achiv.

I killed Alani yesterday (March 25, 2013) at 12:50pm on Grizzly Hills. She respawned about 13 hours later.

I got lucky collecting my first 5 shards, then I farmed the final 5. For the shards that I farmed, it was 11,572 mobs in the Vale and a total of about 20 hours. Keep in mind that the farming time would be dramatically increased if I had actually farmed all 10 shards.

1. Treasure of the vale (Golden Lotus daily reward)
2. Mogu mob during GL Daily
3. Mogu mob during GL Daily
4. Trickster (NW vale)
5. Vicejaw (unique mob near Whitepetal lake)
6. Trickster (NW Vale)
7. Trickster (NW Vale)
8. Trickster (West Vale)
9. Trickster (NW Vale)
10. Trickster (NW Vale)

Note that all of the tricksters that I farmed were NOT from Mistfall Village - I farmed all of them at the encampment north of the village.

When I had all 10 shards I fused them into the sky crystal and I went on a high hillside near Mistfall and waited for her to fly by. I decided to pull her to Mistfall because there were no dailies there that day, so I had no threat from hostile mobs. When I used the crystal, I entered combat and it only took about 15 seconds to kill her. It was a very simple fight (shadow priest.)

A word of warning about choosing where to take Alani down: Do not make the same mistake I did! I landed on top of the the pagoda where the first set of Golden Lotus dailies are (between the 2 Mogu statues) and used my Sky Crystal as Alani passed over. As soon as her shield was gone and I engaged her in battle the surrounding NPC's considered her hostile and attacked as well. They did so much damage to her so fast it trumped mine....so when she died I received no loot from her. No mount, nothing. O.o

I opened a ticket about the issue and the GM was gracious enough to restore my Sky Crystal in order to try again. Just be aware of surrounding 'helpful' NPC's wherever you choose to take her down. I lucked out getting a super nice GM...they could have just said 'tough cookie'.

Got my mount tonight on Uther-US. Took 9-12 hours spread over 3 days (holiday weekend in Canada) to get my shards; started with 1 from Golden Lotus dailies, farmed 9. Took lots of breaks and ran a few heroics on alts, so the total time is a somewhat crude approximation.

12 Hours to Alani
1.) Be a Destruction Warlock.
2.) Talents:

15: Soul Leech
75: Grimoire of Sacrifice
90: Mannoroth's Fury
Note: Unbound Will didn't seem to work against their stun. I assume the physical knockdown made it useless, but that almost doesn't make sense...

3.) Glyphs:

4.) Your targets are the Slateskin Troublemakers. Work at the top terrace southwest of Mistfall Village, above Ai-Ran the Shifting Cloud's cave, where they bring their stolen kegs. They aren't around every day.
--I easily handled pulls of 10-20+ at once, often staying in combat 5+ minutes due to rapid respawns. You can saturation bomb with Rain of Fire and handle pulls of 30 if you're careful.
--I died at least twice (ilvl 518) from not being careful. Never run toward them. Pull smaller groups if e.g. typing in gchat or eating with one hand.
5.) Method:

Pull with Rain of Fire. Just run around the entire terrace and blanket it. While you're there, hit the stairs, the terrace below, and the ramp leading down to Mistfall Village.
Top priority: Fire and Brimstone + Incinerate every time Backlash procs
High priority: Fire and Brimstone + Immolate
As needed: Fire and Brimstone + Conflagrate so mobs can't run up to you and kick-stun.
As opportunity allows: Keep Rain of Fire active to pull respawns, especially on the stairs.
Ember Tap if you get below 2/3 health. You can lose over half your health bar to unlucky stun chains.

6.) Results:

~1 Skyshard per 60-90 min*
7,000g cash and vendor trash, including buff food
>50 Spirit of Harmony
>100 green lvl. 87-89 items
>120 stacks of Windwool Cloth
~10 lv. 80-85 BOE blue items, e.g. Record of Mysterious Deeds x2, Helm of Elemental Binding, etc.

Respawn rate is so fast that one literally cannot kill the entire pull before it respawns.

* Keep the low drop rate in mind; don't give up, drops are highly irregular. For example, #3 and #4 dropped 5 min. apart, but #4 dropped 3 hours before #5.

I got 4 skyshards in October, during a two week period. I didn't farm, I only did dailies. I didn't get a single one from October to March. In March I got three, all in one week - again, only doing dailies. Very strange.

I haven't seen any since March, so today I got fed up and decided to farm the last three. Wowhead said the highest drop rate was from Stonebark Tricksters so I just killed them. I farmed for less than two hours and got three Skyshards, thus completing my collection. At that pace it worked out to 1 Skyshard every 40 min.

According to the odds the drop rate is 0.3%. That's one Skyshard every 333 kills. There are approx 28 Tricksters in the area. So, if you create a circuit for yourself you can do the rounds 12 times for every skyshard. Anyway, that's what I did. But, based on the math I beat those odds as I doubt my full circuit only took 3min 21sec.

There are more than a few good comments about farming this mount. However, I wanted to pass along a few tips from my own quest for it. With the 200 mount achievement in 5.3, I am certain many people might look at Alani with renewed interest. Rather than scare people away with RNG horror stories or discourage them further with unbelievable tales of extreme luck, I will offer a realistic approach to acquiring it.

My first piece of advice, as always, is to download some sort of counting add-on like Rariety. Not only does it remind you of your total kills, it offers the probability that you should have come across a shard with your current kill count. It also divides each shard find into sessions and lets you keep track of the time each took.

Keep in mind that probability does not equal certainty. It is only a rough estimate of how unlucky you are, and Rariety even says so plainly. Some people have the mistaken idea that if they get 1000 kills, there has to be a shard. From my own observations I have learned that this is rarely the case. You could reach 99.99% probability, but still not have a shard drop. This is because the roll for each mob is still 1/1000, despite what your probability is.

That being said, the add-on worked reasonably well in predicting when the shards would drop. I am always hesitant to give out exact numbers, but I think it's safe to say, that the average shard dropped after ~1k500-1k800 kills. Anything less is extremely lucky. When I began searching for shards, I put it into my mind that I would get a shard only after killing 2000 mobs. That way whether it dropped at 1k850 or 550, I would always be surprised and happy. By the time I got my 8 shards ( I found 2 in daily boxes), I had killed over 9k mobs.

The sprites near Mistfall Village, 岩肤捣乱者, are by far the best option for farming shards. They have an insane respawn rate; I could never fully clear the entire place without sprites popping back up somewhere. They are also prone to setting themselves on fire, and with a little timing and know how, you can tag them before they go up in flames. If theses sprites are unavailable, then go with the sprites near the Guo-Lai ruins, 石树欺诈者. They are harder to kill and have a longer spawn timer, but they are still easier to kill than the mogu. Their respawn timer is pretty regular, so you can easily farm them while multitasking. I often watched tv or wrote between timers.

To make either of these grinds go faster, find guildies or friends that you can trust and take them along with you to mistfall village. With the help of two guild members, I was able to farm two shards in under two hours; when I had been soloing them, I average only one shard per three or four hours. It is simply a numbers game. The more you can kill and the faster you can do it, the more chances you have of getting a shard in a timely manner. If you don't trust your farm mates, you can easily put it on master looter and set it to epic.

You might think it unlikely that anyone would take the time to help you farm shards. However, with the introduction of 次级好运护符 drops from lvl 90 mobs, there is extra incentive for doing large scale farming. In the time it took me to get my shards, I got a total of 450 次级好运护符 between two characters. I won't have to even look at dailies on either of my toons for a few weeks. And it took less time than doing my regular daily routine. Alts in particular can benefit from this. Since rep can easily be farmed by killing troll rares, alts become revered or exalted without picking up any charms. Looking for shards is a great way to play catch up.

Another reason I decided to finally go after my mount was because I needed to save gold for additional mounts. I have not yet sold every bit of dust or green I found during my farm, but so far I have made around 8k gold with just grey items and bolts of cloth. I also used my spirits of harmony to buy bags of herbs from the spirit vendor and sold some of them too. I also found five blue items and an epic cloth head piece which will give me a good bit of gold on top of it all. It is rare that you find a mount grind that actually pays you to do it, both in loot rolls AND gold.

Finally, I would like to say, "dont give up". This was actually one of the most stress free grinds I've ever had. This is because I knew eventually I would find the shard. Somewhere among the hundreds of little sprites, there was a special little sprite waiting for me that was holding my sky shard close to its heart. Of course I had to pry it from its cold, dead little fingers, but eventually I would come upon it. When you think of it that way instead of worrying about how many more you have to kill, it becomes more of a treasure hunt than a chore.

Farmed the 天水晶 at Mistfall Village during the daily quest that frees up the Sprites up there.
I successfully looted 14 shards in 3 hours of farming there as a warlock.
Looted the mount with masterloot and traded it to a buyer without problems.

So I got this mount back in November after getting a crystal during dailies,i didn't keep track of any thing back then but just today Aug 11/13 got my second one . took 5744kills for all 10 shards (Rarity Addon kept track) 56 ancient keys 150 stacks of cloth 5 blues and 1epic .

It took me about..I'll guess 8 hours of grinding to get 7 shards, and sure it's RNG but when you're killing crap like a robot RNG becomes your ^&*!@ :^)

anyway to you aspiring farmers, the route I took was guo-lai ruins, five sisters, the camp north of there and eventually going into the halls to use keys. I'd highly suggest if you're going to actively farm for this mount, kill mogu and farm keys because they're densely packed and you'll make respectable money from ancient caches.

I have just dropped 10th shard and killed Alani. Very easy to kill, fight starts at 80% of Alani`s health. You need to find a place from you can reach Alani and call her down.
Ps. All shards was grinded near entrance to mogu catacombs. It took me about 5 hours. Grinded within 1 day.

Patch 5.4.0 - Comprehensive Skyshard farming guide for the Siege of Orgrimmar and above

So. With 5.4.0, the Vale sort of went to s**t and as a result, many prime farming spots were lost for Skyshards, as well as the fear that they may become even less obtainable due to the destruction of a large portion of land and the loss of mobs.

So lets get the basics out of the way.

Yes, Skyshards still drop.
No, I don't believe the new Sha in the zone drop them.
Yes, there will be a lot of competition.

My Skyshards.

What a freaking ordeal. The first 4 were pre 5.4.0, the others grinded in Winterbough glade over a period of 36 hours in 4 hour sessions.

1) Treasures of the Vale
2) Stonebark Trickster
3) Thundermaw
4) Thundermaw (Two dropped in the same pack and were AoE looted. Maybe a mob can drop 2, maybe not. Such luck has never been observed before)
5) Painweaver
6) Painweaver
7) Conqueror
8) Painweaver
9) Conqueror
10) Thundermaw (Final shard. 02/03/2014 at 17:53)

Farming Areas

There are two primary farming spots and on a heavily populated server they will be -extremely- popular, so be prepared to move on or wait for them to pass through on their own accord. These areas are:

Winterbough Glade.

My spot of choice. Quick respawns on Painweavers and Conquerors and plenty of passing Thundermaws make for ideal farming, especially if you're an AoE capable class. Large and openspaced with numerous Mogu clumped in groups of 5-6. This is where I farmed 6 of my 10 shards.

GuoLai ruins and Halls.

Not...Too bad? If we're talking about the actual halls, there's more of a run between groups than at Winterbough and numerous rooms. The Mogu here seem to have a slowerr respawn timer than at Winterbough, especially in the halls themselves, and the ruins around the halls are no different. I'd recommend coming here just for a change of scenery or if competition at the glade gets too intense.

Either way, if you can choose Winterbough, do so. But with the presence of too many people (Two people alongside yourself is too many.) go to the halls and clear them on a room by room basis.

If you can AoE pull, do so. They'll respawn in no time whatsoever, however be wary that the Conqueror leash is quite small, and they have a horrible tendency to reset after their leap ability and run all the way back to where they were. The Painweavers will also stand on the spot and channel Torture Mind, leaving them stationary. Interupt if you can but don't worry if not as at higher gear levels (Anything above 500) it does barely anything. Finally, when you have them AoEable, don't stand still as both mobs will summon a pool on the floor that, while neglible at one pool, deals nasty damage when stacked up by many mobs.

Time taken

To give you a brief idea of how many kills you may have to make, I'll put it into context.

It took me near enough exactly 36 hours.
I'd kill roughly 7 Mogu per minute, pulling them all into Lights Hammer. You can probably do better.
So per hour, I kill 420 mogu as a rough estimate, not accounting for other farmers, afk breaks, etc.
I did this in 36 hours, in 4 hour bouts a night, five nights a week.
I killed, to obtain my mount, 15120 as a near estimate. Seems about right once you account for passing Thundermaw packs which I wholley reccomend murdering.

Despite being a level 92 Rare mob, Alani's looting behaviour is that of a RAID BOSS . In regular group loot rules, if someone in your group kills a mob in the world and you are withing a specific distance and an item such as a BOE epic drops, you can loot it without tagging that particular mob.

ALANI DOES NOT WORK THIS WAY.

Even if you are all grouped up and in a party, if someone doesn't tag it, they can't roll on the mount.

So make sure everyone in the party who wants to roll on the mount tags it!

Can anyone give any concrete info on the respawn time of this mob? I see all sorts of "guesses" and "I saw it 4 hours later" but nothing for sure.

how did i get it?

i mainly farmed Mogu camps, id say 90% of the time since the mobs spawn fast and in big numbers.
i guess being in a dead realm helps sometimes! :P
also a few runs down Guo-Lai Halls.

my drop rate of 天之裂片 was painful!
once at 1/1254
twice over 1/2200 somthing!
and once at 1/658

these were my last 4 天之裂片

luckily, I've collected the other 6 way at the beginning of MOP, before it had this agonizing drop rate!

I'm yet to see someone else with it on my realm, Dentarg EU, so it makes even more enjoyable!

PS: would i do it all over again? absolutely NOO! that was a truly painful farming experience ><

Don't give up on your shard quest! I was at 4868 kills without a drop, and got one this morning. A second shard dropped 11 kills later - and I still can't believe it! The spilled coffee stains on my desk from seeing the 2nd shard drop is proof to me that it really happened.

That's number 9 now, and now I have the motivation to keep going!

I just received my 10th shard today afer 3 weeks of farming 2-3 hours in the vale each day I just made a big circle around the mogu camps

I got 10 shards after only 14 hours of farming, that would make it 1,4 shards per hour. At best I got 3 shards within 20 minutes (kept track by using Potion of Luck).

Well after 5 days of farming roughly 9 hours a day. i got my shards. not sure what Alani's respawn rate is but have been waiting 3 hrs for a respawn. DL'ed "rarity" add on. tracked how many kills between shards.average kills was 900-1400 kills per shard. all kills mogu just above ruins in northern area of vale where the tricksters used to spawn.
