Some of the better spots for these are the southern beach of the southern peninsula in Azshara, the northern beaches of Tanaris, and The Hinterlands, although Feralas and Jaguero Isle in STV are also good places for them. Many of the other areas listed on the map require 150 fishing to even cast; the ones I mentioned take closer to 200 to cast, and have correspondingly "better" fish.

This recipe is a must for fishermen leveling cooking, as Yellowtail is one of the more common 'trash' fish for 200-300'ish level fishing, while persuing Stonescale, Firefin or Oily.

Recipe is red at 225. (Cook one per skillup)
Recipe is yellow at 265. (Cook one per skillup to 275, 1-2 per skillup to 285)
Recipe is green at 285. (Cook 2 per skillup to 290, 5 per skillup to 295)

Takes 85-90 fish to go from 225-295.

is the fishing job too boring? try farm some Steeljaw Snapper turtles at Steamwheedle Port and continue heading south along the coast. it should be worth it :)

Also confirming Azshara as the best place to fish these. I sat on a little ledge at 50.69 61.66 with my trusty Lifelike Mechanical Toad named Tacklebox and fished loads of these along with some Raw Glossy Mightfish and Winter Squid (November 2008). If you're fresh from the Nat Pagle fishing quest at skill level 225 to increase your fishing skill to 300, be prepared and bring some lures with you because you'll get a lot of "Your fish got away!" messages here. No problem when I applied the +75 bauble lure.

The amount of Raw Spotted Yellowtail I got while leveling my fishing here was more than enough to level my cooking from 225 to 240 when I could learn the 240 recipes you can get from the Fisherman Gikkix at Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris that require Winter Squid (Grilled Squid) and the 225 recipe sold by Kelsey Yance in Booty Bay, STV for Raw Glossy Mightfish. (Cooked Glossy Mightfish) Between all of these fish you should be able to get to the correct level to make/use the sandworm meat quest in Silithus for Smoked Desert Dumplings.

I also fished up a lot of Big-mouth clams, which contain Zesty Clam Meat and the occasional Black Pearl. The Zesty Clam Meat is used in the Undermine Clam Chowder recipe which is able to be created at skill level 225 and is sold by Jabbey the General Goods vendor found also at Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris. Since you have plenty of other 225 level cooking recipes to skill up with (and will no doubt have more than enough Spotted Yellowtail), I prefer to sell my Zesty Clam Meat on the AH in stacks of 10 for those who need to do the Cooking Quest but are too lazy to farm for the meat themselves.

Also at this location I fished a small amount of Stonescale Eel, some Raw Rockscale Cod and Firefin Snappers.

This is a great little area to bridge the gap between 225 and 300 (Once you get the sandworm meat quest/recipe) for both cooking and fishing.

Edit: After about a half hour fishing here I walked away with 21 Raw Rockscale Cod, 15 Firefin Snappers, 57 Raw Spotted Yellowtail, 11 Winter Squid, 9 Raw Glossy Mightfish, 2 Stonescale Eel, 1 Small Lusterous Pearl, 3 Black Pearls, and 11 Zesty Clam Meat. I also leveled my fishing from 225 to 246. Definitely not bad.

Edit again: After posting this and fishing some more at this spot, I noticed my Stonescale Eel count going noticeably higher... it's just after 6pm Server Time. (Which makes sense since the Eel have a better fish rate in the evening or early morning.) Fished up 7 in the last 5 mins. Not from pools, either. i can maek moar profitz?

The best place is Azshara and not in pools. I was just below the mid part of the beach.

80% drop or so...40 fish in 30 mins including trunks(4 greens)

Just mentioning it, by sitting on the pier in Steamwheedle Port, Tanaris. I get about 2 of those per minute. Facing into the shore

Tonight I needed Spotted Yellowtail and I couldn't find a fishing area that had a good catch rate. As I was flying to yet another zone, I came across a small pool of water. I decided to give it a shot and was I extremely surprised at the catch rate...

You will need a flying mount to get this location.

Anyone a little lower than Tanaris level can get these pretty easily in Booty Bay. I started at lvl 149 + an Aquadynamic Fish Attractor (x6) . . . I fished for one hour and ended up with the following:

1. Raw Rockscale Cod - 117 (54.67%)
2. Raw Spotted Yellowtail - 51 (23.83%)
3. Oily Blackmouth - 30 (14.02%)
4. Firefin Snapper - 14 (6.54%)
5. Sealed Crate - 2 (0.93%)

I have to agree with the above post......

In Booty Bay:

1st Cast = Oily Blackmouth
2nd Cast = Spotted Yellowtail
3rd Cast = Rockscale Cod

I hope for your sakes i wasn't just lucky. But i still doubt it would take u long to get these.

Then fly north to The Vile Reef where u can easily get a Rainbow Fin Albacore from off the coast along with SCHOONER and BLOODSAIL Wreckages in the same place.

Found a place at the Northeast end of 1k needles. NO FLYING MOUNT REQUIRED. Can swim or use boat if you have it.

10 minutes i caught 8 Raw Spotted Yellowtail, 5 Raw Summer Bass, and 2 Rockscale Cod

Easy place to get to before you get a flying mount.

There are 6 pools of bubbling water there. I used the one on the far right of the back three.

Tanaris is still a good fishing place for these, just don't fish in the schools of stonescale eels.

I was able to fish these at lvl 157 and got steady flow of them. I of course also got fishing increase in skill. I was in Tanaris fishing.

Tanaris is excellent. I picked a solitary spot on the north side of the "new" bay. I started out with a fishing skill of 180 plus a +20 fishing pole and a +100 lure.
After 20 minutes this was my count:
30 spotted yellowtail.
8 stonescale eel.
7summer bass.
7 glossy mightfish.
6 rockscale cod.
5 bigmouth clams.

Tanaris is definitely a good spot for these. You dont have to go far just right outside gadgetzan and you will be fishing up these in no time. I didnt have any luck in booty bay or ratchet however.

Sept. 22 2011: Great success in STV at Jaguero Isle. I got a stack of 30 in about 30 minutes along with lots of other fish and a small lustrous pearl. A screenshot has been submitted.

Fished with a +5 rod/reel and a +75 lure.

I went to just north of the western most pirate ship on the Tanaris map and fished there for about 20 minutes with Strong Fishing Pole and Aquadynamic Fish Attractor. I got:

36 Raw Spotted Yellowtail
13 Raw Rockscale Cod
10 Winter Squid
7 Zesty Clam Meat (looted from Big-Mouth Clams)
5 Raw Glossy Mightfish
4 Firefin Snapper
3 Stonescale Eel

Started with 244 fishing skill and ended with 255.

This is a very handy lil fishin' spot! Tonight (11/8/11) I spent 20 min fishing here as I needed Raw Spotted Yellowtail. My fishing skill was 178 when I started. I added +5 from pole and +75 from Bright Baubles. Here is what I got from 20 min:

22- Raw Spotted Yellowtail
6 - Raw Rockscale Cod
5 - Raw Glossy Mightfish
4 - Winter Squid
4 - Firefin Snapper
4 - Big-mouth Clam (contained 4 Zesty Clam Meat)
2 - Stonescale Eel
13 - gray items

Gained 13 fishing skill points.

I too can confirm that Jaguero Isle just off the coast of Booty Bay is super for Raw Spotted Yellowtail and it seems I'm catching a good amount of Winter Squid (September - March).
As it happens my Rogue will be using both of these to skill up, so it should go pretty fast to the next level
P.S. I went to the southern most tip of the island and had super luck. Hope you do too.

For those of you looking for schools of yellowtails, don't bother, they can be fished by just throwing a line in the water. Booty Bay drop rate was around 40% along with Firefin Snapper, Oily Blackmouth and Rockscale Cod dropping as well.

Tried out the Jaguero Isle tip, and it's definitely a keeper. Fished for about 15 mins, 430 skill (plus 20 for my rod). Finished on 438 with the following fish-
Raw Spotted Yellow Tail - 20
Stonescale Eel - 2
Winter Squid - 4
Raw Rockscale Cod - 5
Firefin Snapper - 4
Raw Glossy Mightfish - 3
Big-Mouth Clams - 9 (This became 9 Zesty clam meat and a black pearl)

A worthwhile spot if you're chasing this fish.

FWIW, you can catch these off the Revantusk dock in The Hinterlands as well, although only in small amounts. I caught 4 of these against 31 Rockscale Cod.

I too can confirm this spot beeing very good for this fish. I started with fishing skill 412 and ended up getting 22 skill ups putting me at skill 434. After 100 casts this is what I got:

50 Raw Spotted Yellowtail
13 Raw Summer Bass
11 Raw Rockscale Cod
8 Firefin Snapper
8 Big-Mouth Clam (Contained 8 Zesty Clam Meat, 1 Golden Pearl and 2 Black Pearl)
6 Stonescale Eel
3 Raw Glossy Mightfish
1 trash item

I did not use any lures.

Fuselight-By-The-Sea in the Badlands is a great place to get these. I was fishing off the dock and got 10 Raw Spotted Yellowtail and 2 Raw Summer Bass, with a fishing skill of 342 (originally 247, I used a +20 fishing skill pole and a +75 skill bauble) and no junk. Apparently you can also get Winter Squid there.
Also, without the bauble, I still was able to get Raw Spotted Yellowtail at a skill of 270.

From the Thousand Needles fishing spot when Winter Squid is available, with 336 fishing skill (231 + 105) for 10 minutes:

The rate of catch isnt great but you can get raw spotted yellowtail off the dock in Theramore. Easier than flying around looking for the best rate. Maybe 1 in 7 or so.

You can use the flightmaster to get to Fizzle and Pozzick's Speed Barge and then fish from one of the docks attached to the barge. After about 30 minutes of fishing (starting at fishing skill = 440): 40 raw Spotted Yellowtails; 11 Firefin Snappers; 9 Raw Summer Bass; 4 Zesty Clam Meat (from Big-Mouth Clam).

fished thousand needles today - raw glossy mightfish - driftwood - torn sail - empty clams - raw rockscale cod - big mouth clam - bristle whisker catfish withered kelp - tangled fishing line - total waste of time - Tanaris seems to be slightly better - at least here you actually catch the yellowtail....gonna try some place new and get back to ya

OK...I have traveled to every location given by every sorce on the web...the ONLY place I was able to catch this fish was Tanaris and the spot you should go to is a little island @ 65.53/63.95...I once again have attached a screen shot - hope you can see it.

Since 6.2.0.19890, with the addition of the Darkmoon Daggermaw, Raw Spotted Yellowtail (and most other fish for that matter) can no longer be fished from the waters around Darkmoon Island.

As of 8.3 these were a pain to fish up. These are my suggestions:

- Fishing skill of 200 (still get grays but not as many as below 200). The higher the better.
- Fizzle & Pozzik's barge in Thousand Needles
- Lures; doesn't matter what you have, anything helps
- Trawler totem toy if you have; anything helps
- Lots of patience

After a half hour:
- 23 Spotted Yellow Tail
- 12 Glossy Might Fish
- 7 Raw Rockscale Cod
- 4 Stonescale Eel
- 1 crate
- Crapton of grays
- Approximately 30 levels in fishing (starting at 176)
