You don't have to keep this item in your bags to see the lumber. Use it to activate the ability and then you can put it in your warband bank for your alts to use.

There's currently no buff showing if you have it turned on or not. I used it and put it in my bank so I could have alts also use it, but then I couldn't see the nodes. You must have it in your bags to be able to see the lumber on your minimap. If you want to collect lumber on alts you should just buy a hatchet for every character and mail it to them.

This item is a toggle, and it's really not obvious whether it's active or not. If you're like me and clicked it a couple of times cause you didn't immediately see any nodes, you might've turned it off lol.

Try going to the Circle of Cinders area of Mount Hyjal, west of Nordrassil (I'm sure there are other areas, this is just the first easy one I found). There's a good number of nodes there and they respawn relatively quickly; if you don't see any after a loop or two, right click the hatchet once and keep looking!

Look closer at the item's tooltip. If lumber tracking isn't active, the tooltip will say "Activate to show lumber nodes".
If it is active, the tooltip will say "Activate to hide lumber nodes", and "Nearby lumber nodes appear on the minimap".

EDIT: It is now a consumed item that lets you track Lumber in the tracking menu like Herbs etc!

EDIT 2: The Lumber For You quest given by the vendors (Xiz'ro and Lestia Goldenstrike) now just teaches you Lumber tracking! They still sell the item as well, in case the quest isn't showing up for whatever reason.

My experience grinding lumber you will always get 1 lumber, with around 5-10% chance of getting 2 and maybe 2% chance of getting 3.
I recommend doing on a druid alt for ease of travel as you are dismounted doing it.

So, instead of utilizing their existing API and adding an entry to the Minimap Tracking table, they give us a switch in the form of an item that we must pass along to every alt to enable the Lumber Tracking?

Good luck, Blizzard, developing a 12.0 UI that will remotely match the quality and professionalism of the addons you’re going to shut down.

Update: In the meantime, Find Lumber finally made its way into the Minimap Tracking list! I hope the dev who did this got an extra salary.
(It now basically works like Find Fish: you buy an item and consume it to learn the spell.)

REGARDING SHADOWMOON TIMBER... you can only currently get it by going first to outlands, then to (for Alliance) Founder's Point (I imagine Horde have their own version), talk with the Gnome who sells the hatchet and EXCHANGE the Outland Timber (Only in blocks of 5 and an even 1 to 1 Swap) to obtain Shadowmoon Lumber. As of right now 12/30/25 it DOES NOT "grow on trees" in Draenor! So don't be a silly-goose like I was and mess with your axe thinking it's turned off or you were doing something wrong. For once it's not you, it's them. There is NO TIMBER for HOUSING in Draenor it must be obtained through trade only. I hope you save the time I wasted! Happy Hunting!

Interestingly, you can harvest wood in Northshire, even though, as a starting zone, it's utterly devoid of ores and flowers, and animals can't be skinned. There's a lot of it on a small area, too. Haven't checked the other starting zones, but I will. ;)

Intended functionality on this item seems a little unclear/inconsistent.

On most characters, I've been able to grab it from my warbound bank, toggle lumber tracking on, put the item back in my warbound bank, and harvest just fine without it. For some reason though, on at least a couple occasions, the lumber nodes disappear when I put the item back in the bank, and I need to have it in my bag in order to gather.

Why? If there's an answer, I'd love to know it. It'd be annoying to have to buy a copy of this thing for every single alt I have.

Edit: As of the Midnight pre-patch, this is now a single-use item that just teaches a character the ability to track lumber nodes, like any other gathering profession tracking. Simple and straightforward.

I didn't get this on my Legion Remix characters, then went to harvest lumber on one of them and couldn't find the vendor. For Alliance, she's no longer on the stump, she's by Jorvan, the general contractor. For Horde he's by Rotha (also the general contractor). Not sure if this tripped anyone else up, but I hope this helps folks after the patch.

Looks like as of Midnight prepatch this item is now a learnable ability. Right click it and it will disappear from your inventory and as the tooltip now reads, use the tracking menu to toggle the tracking ability on and off.

After the patch on the week of 1/20/26 they FINALLY made this into a true tracking item. You consume the item and Find Lumber is added to your Tracking menu along with everything else.

Does anyone else have an issue with Battle Pets not appearing on the mini-map anymore after this came out? When I could toggle the item it didnt help and now that its an ability, toggling on the mini map tracker doesnt help either.

You now get this item for free by completing the quest Lumber For You from Xiz'ro (/way 53.61 56.74) or Lestia Goldstrike (/way 53.93 39.44).

Is this item currently bugged? either factions lumberjack is devoid of a shop inventory and has no chat options. Correction, it appears they have changed how lumber gathering works now. if you were gathering in 11.2.7 with the hatchet to toggle on or off it now is a consumed item for your warband.

This may be obvious to less classic-brained people than me, but you DO NOT NEED a copy of this item in your inventory to be able to gather lumber. You just need to have learned "find lumber" from either the quest or the vendor item on each character.

(I got confused by the fact that it was a permanent item at first and then disappeared, so I bought another copy from the vendor because I thought surely you'd need an actual axe to cut down trees. Not in this game, you don't.)
