Fishing these up in Isle of Dorn from Festering pools. On use, they're dropping grey items. Is there a rare chance for something useful? Hmm. On 6th one so far, and all greys.

Something important that I have not seen anybody mention yet: YES, it is possible to fish these up from the open waters. I just confirmed it by fishing one up in the open waters of Azj-Kahet. So if you're trying to speedrun the Meraldar Derby and there's no festering rotpools spawned anywhere, you can just chill in the open waters of Azj-Kahet.

I've had nothing but issues with trying to catch this fish. Open water fishing hasn't worked, the pools that it's looted from don't spawn often enough, and I've only ever managed to catch one from an Infused Ichor Spill-- and even that was after fishing from several other spills. It's the last fish I need for the derby and I'm out of ideas in terms of finding a way to consistently fish this thing.

*Just* after the derby ended I *finally* found a Festering pool in A-K...and got the fish but no credit. Soooo close! Or should I say the one that got away. You shudda seen it, man!

I tried 50 times at open waters at Azj-Kahet, 0 catches. First time at a Infused Ichor Spill in Azj-Kahet and bingo: The Derby Dash completed.

Probably the rarest fish in Khaz Algar. Can only be fished from very rare pools:
Festering Rotpool - Isle of Dorn
Infused Ichor Spill - Hallowfall & Azj-Kahet

The good news is they can spawn everywhere in those 3 zones, so you will most certainly run into these every once in a while.
The bad news is there is no way to target farm these so, if you really want to fish a Pale Huskfish, it could take 1h even to find just one.

To note: finding one of these pools does not guarantee a Pale Huskfish. Most despawn after just 1 cast and the fish is not a 100% drop chance from the pool (you're more likely to find a Cursed Ghoulfish) so you might need to find 4-5 of these pools to be able to find even 1 fish. In order to increase your chances of finding one from the above pools, I would recommend keeping a few of these in the backpack and using one when you find a pool: Regal Dottyback. Why? It protects you from fishing a Cursed Ghoulfish, which means your chances of fishing a Pale Huskfish from a Festering Rotpool increase from 20% (1 in 5 possible fish) to 25% (1 in 4). This is especially useful if you're not at max fishing skill, or in the case of Infused Ichor Spill specifically, where the chances go up from 33% to 50% (only Pale Huskfish and Goldengill Trout can be fished from that pool if you remove Cursed Ghoulfish)

Also, there are legends that it can also be fished from Azj-Kahet open waters but, after 80 minutes spent fishing in that place, I couldn't catch any (330 skill, 120 perception).

2 weeks in the toilet trying to get this as my last fish for the mount. Fishing in open water at 318 fishing or so with tons of perception with consumables and stuff.
I guess all I got is time, will try next week. Done 3 weeks in total here and completed the quest each time at least :>>

This was the only fish I was unable to do in my first hour of The Derby Dash, and rather got one in the fishing cast that was in progress when the buff fell off. In a fit of rage I decided to try on an alt, and fished one up from an Ichor Pool around Rak-Ahat with a fishing skill of 12. Meaning all the comments suggesting you need a certain fishing skill, rod, or buff, are inaccurate.

This was much easier than the comments suggested. There are many festering rotpools around the isle of dorn. I found one at 76,57 and then several more in the southeast along the shoreline. I fished up 3 in a row from the first pool, and the pool was still available. I moved on, leaving it for someone else. This is much better than looking for ichor spills which are 1 cast only rare spawns in other zones.

I salvaged 500 Pale Huskfish with 129 (100+29 from gear) Cooking skill.

This seems to be one of the low fillet yield fishes, as I only saw fish fillet drops of 3-6 per salvage of 5 Pale Huskfish.

Still, salvaging them is definitely a better use for them than trying to open them, as onsokomaru showed in another comment...

I finnaly fished in open waters in Azkahet, fishink skill 351 and 479 perception. Over 40 min and only got 1.

BIG tip for y'all if you're struggling with this as much as I did.
Go to Undermine!
(I figured since it's got slimy toxic rivers maybe it'll have the right pools...? and sure enough, no more than one minute in Undermine and I fished it up first try.)

For reference, I flew around Isle of Dorn for maybe 45 minutes, but didn't find a single pool that contains Pale Huskfish.

if you're stuck on this fish I highly recommend Undermine!

Another general tip for the Derby achievement, if, like me, you fished everything but a couple fish in one go, the achievement does save your progress. Just make sure you turn the quest in when you know you're still going to fail on week one. Then on week 2 just go ahead and fish up only what you're missing for the achievement and ignore the fish you need for the quest as you've already turned it in once.

When searching for a festering rotpool I find it best to check the 3 islands off the north east coast of the isle of dorn 1st and then pass over cinderbrew meadery and down the east coast all the way before checking the western side of dorn
