Does this fish require a certain level to catch, etiher fishing or the experience kind? I've been totally unable in Ashenvale or the Loch with my level 26 mage, fishing 150.

As flaggthecat said, the best place to fish these is the river east of Tarren Mill in Hillsbrad.

There are plenty of Sagefish Schools there, and if you just walk along the river you will probably not be out of schools until they start respawning.

Sagefish can ONLY be caught in Schools of Sagefish, they'll never come up randomly when you're fishing outside of them.

I just pulled 40 of these out of the lake at Astranaar in about 20 mins. They respawn there constantly. The problem with sagefish schools (the only place you find them) is that they are hard to see in water with a lot of glare - try running your cursor over the water and see if they show up. Of course if you are lucky enough to have 'Find fish' it's not a problem. The 'Weather-beaten journal' that teaches this was one of the best finds that i got from a watertight trunk. I picked mine up in Wetlands.

You can find schools of these in Loch Modan too. The first school I found was right next to the fishing trainer next to the lil dock. Good Luck!

Silverpine is also a very good place to find them, as indicated on the maps above. There is a little pier called The Decrepit Ferry on the map, at about 56,35, that has three schools spawn right around it. I've also seen a fourth school spawn nearby. If you follow the coast north from Decrepit Ferry you'll find a ton of sagefish schools, along with floating debris for tightly-sealed cases. The pier only has a level 16 quest mob on it, while the coast going north has level 12-16 murlocs.

The minimum fishing level for Hillsbrad is 55, but your fish will get away from you alot. I started there with a fishing skill of 67 and only 1 out of 10 casts were succesful, so I'd suggest using a lure until your fishing skill is about 75 to 80.

I skilled cooking with them too and i fished them there.
The balance were, out of 61 fish, 42 were Raw Sagefish, 18 of these and one of this.

So i was really satisfied with this spot.

There are hostile low 20 beasts along most of the river in Hillsbrad, with mid 20s in the southern section. They aren't much of a problem because they never cross the river, which is narrow and shallow, so just go to the other side. However, hunters may want to turn autoshoot off or unload or remove their guns or bows. The issue is that the river is full of neutral level 31 snapjaw turtles that often wander into the sagefish schools. If you happen to right-click on them instead of your bobber (easy enough to do) your autoshoot will be activated and you will wind up in a fight with a fishing pole as your melee weapon. Other classes should not have this problem because you will probably be out of melee range and (as far as I know) only hunters have something like autoshoot. Players on PVP servers may have more of a problem because there tend to be a heavy mixture of both factions in the area. (It's still easy to find schools to fish, though.) All in all, the sagefish are well worth catching and cooking for most classes because eating smoked sagefish generates both health and mana, they are easy to catch and the recipe is available from plenty of vendors.

You will probably want to empty your bags before fishing for sagefish. You will catch quite a few watertight trunks and other drops in addition to the sagefish, even if you only fish from the schools. Finally, you will probably find it easier to see your bobber if you fish from the side of the river that puts the sun at your back. The schools are easily accessible from both sides. I haven't fished for sagefish elsewhere, so I don't know how well some of my comments apply outside Hillsbrad Foothills.

by the way if you are having trouble seeing them,go underwater,they are VERY easy to see underwater as they are a bright teal color

If you need to level your cooking, fishing and could use some MP5 these are great and easy to fish up. I always check the little pond outside of Tarren Mill because it almost always has 4 pools, which is a ton of fish. If you're on a PvP server though, make sure to watch your back. I had some rogue try to gank me, but I was able to shield and ran back to Tarren Mill quickly enough to survive.

Caught several in a row with fishing 150-175, only seemed to catch when a school was visible in the area however, easy for skilling cooking 75ish+, can also catch nice chests in same area.

River between Darkshore and Elwynn. Close to Stormind, so not much traveling. Just fish one school until end. Look for another. I always found a school along the coast.

Make sure to position yourself so your lure lands near or in the school. Hard to explain, you will see when you just experiment.

I've always gotten plenty up and down Southfury river. But starting today I've not seen a single school of them. very strange. glitch maybe?

For anyone doing The Limnologist, and you have yet to catch the Raw Loch Frenzy, you might as well just go to the center lake in Loch Modan and get both at once. Snagged both within just a few minutes of each other. There are plenty of Sagefish schools around, plus the Loch is the only place you can actually get the Loch Frenzy.

Azshara map seems to show pools at Lake Mennar, there are no pools of fish there as of this posting. Did find some in the river between Ashenvale and Azshara.

I don't know what someone was saying above, but I just now flew around Astranaar and my Fish Founder showed that 8 Sagefish Pools were up in the lake at the one time. So if you are after these, this would a perfect place to fish them, as there is plenty there!

The northern limit of Duskwood ( the river beetwen Duskwood and Elwynn Forest ) is a very nice, and easy to reach for alliance, spot to farm them, the school repop fast enought for you to perma farm them :).

A fantastic place to fish for sagefish is Lake Nazferiti in Stranglethorn, and the river it's connected to. You can find schools the entire way from Nesingwary's Expedition down to Fort Livingston. These schools also contain stranglekelp and watertight trunks.

Sagefish schools seem most common in lakes. For example, Lake Everstill in Redridge Mountains is a great place to level fishing and cooking for low level Alliance characters, as the waters under and around the Lakeshire Docks are teeming with these fish!

The river in Hillsbrad seems very inconsistent. I ran up and down the river three times and never found so much as 1 school of sagefish. I thought maybe someone else had been there and they hadn't respawned so I buggered off and did some (much needed) house cleaning. About an hour later I go back and I did manage to find 1 school but it was empty other wise.

I remember this being a prime spot to fish Sagefish , though it was a long time ago. Has something changed with this location or is there any outside factors effecting spawn times / locations?

As of 11-02-2019 (02-11-2019) I found that going to Lake Nezferiti in Northern Stranglethorn and running around the lake and the river leading to The Vile Reef was the best spot. I tried out Hillsbrad too, as the top comments of this page said, but it seems like that spot is no longer good for these fish. I found a couple schools but after that nothing. In Stranglethorn however, I found 8 schools in under ten minutes. Every time I fished one dry, there was another waiting not too far away.

Be aware though, that this is a place for both Horde and Ally and there's quite a few aggressive mobs along the river and lake. But even with the added annoyance of having to kill a few mobs (I was level 59 at the time), I got over 20 raw sagefish in no time to level up my cooking. So I recommend going here if you're looking to do the same. (:
