These drop from most small and minor mobs throughout Zereth Mortis after learning Dealic Understanding.

I've so far found it most efficient to farm minor mobs, as they die so quickly, and drop 1-2 each. The 5 packs of 3xMenacing Vespoid Worker are ideal as they respawn very quickly (~30s) to facilitate activating Zatojin, which gets you 30-60/min (cue the nerf). As expected, they no longer drop from these mobs.

Try Native Cervid instead, as they're easily groupable and have a fast respawn.

Tried to farm them before getting Dealic Research but did not get any, looks like Dealic research must be learned in order for them to drop.
If that is the case we might have to get Dealic Research on alts as well in order to farm them on multiple characters.

Genesis Mote is an uncommon Protoform Synthesis crafting material.
To unlock protoform crafting:

Complete chapters 1,2 and 3 of Secrets of the First Ones zone campaign.
Research Sopranian Understanding and complete The Final Song questlines.
After daily reset complete The Lost Component + A New Architect quests to unlock Protoform Synthesis (Mount).
Complete Protoform Synthesis quest to unlock Protoform Synthesis (Battle Pet)

Good spot to farm (the best probably) is an area along Genesis Fields (42.21 74.16). There are multiple portals spawn lots of scavengers and gorgers mobs.
You can run along pulling them or find a spot of respawn and farm there. My results (every attempt was limited by 10 minutes) is below:

Best place I found is 700-900 Genesis Mote per hour depending on the group. You pull the mobs that spawns from the portal from the left and right. Sometimes you can pull a few from south as well, This spot works very well!

These likely won't drop for you until you do Dealic Understanding and finish the quest Protoform Synthesis which gives you Protoform Synthesis (Battle Pet)

Once you get Dealic Understanding it's very quick to get it on all your toons. I'd suggest getting it on all your alts so these motes can start dropping doing ordinary things like dailies and questing.

I'm not 100% sure you need to do the quest too (and get the buff), but it would make sense given how this game tends to work.

Edit: I'm pretty sure you need to do the quest. I've done this on several toons now and I start seeing Motes drop immediately after I do the quest.

No sure if anyone else has run into this or not. But every since I learned the ability and did the quests to be able to craft mounts it seems like these motes are hard to come by. So coming into Tuesday (day Mythic raid launched) I had 800+ on my two characters I have been doing Zeroth Mortis on. I don't do anything special. I do the weekly, the campaign quests and dailies. I get chests and rares if they pop up while I am doing my dailies. So nothing extreme at all. Since Tuesday however I have looted a total of about 30 without changing my routine. I can find any bugs or anyone else reporting this so not sure what's going on.

Farming in 5 man groups by the portal at /way 42.07 73.85

works fine. You can also farm down south by Otiosen, but it needs a more active group. With good clear at portals I got 100 motes in about 9 minutes when I tested it now.

Edit: Soon farmed 9000 of them. It really is doable to get about 900-1000 an hour in a 5 man group.

Given Genesis Motes are not that easy to farm directly, I can recommend sending an army of alts in ZM to help out. Every alt can complete the mount synthesis quest to get some additional motes, as well as doing the Repertory Alcove weekly. This is only for a measly 20-25 motes but adds up. Other than that, it's just a very boring farm.

I'm getting the feeling that they have to be pure automa. Doesn't seem like the corrupted ones in Mawsworn sites seem to carry them. Maybe that's wrong or old news, I dunno, just my observation.

If you're like me and work from home, the best way to afk farm is at /way 42.8 71.2
I'm a demonology lock lvl 60 ilvl 243 and i just stood right in front of the fauna tender where a scavenger spawns every few seconds. He automatically got aggro'd by my demon and I just tabbed in to loot every few minutes.
Ended up with approx 200 in an hour and didnt lose any health on me or my demon

This is done really badly given the realities of this game

Chests never contain them, though they contain a bunch of currencies that are basically worthless. (the exception to this is Olea Cache and Sandworn Chest)
You never get them as a reward from a Quest (World Quest or otherwise)
They only seem to drop from rares and trash mobs

I originally thought I was going to get all I needed by doing the ZM weekly on all my toons. But because my shard has gone so dead I have to do the weekly almost exclusively using Quests and Chests (I can't solo rares on most of my toons). This means I can do the entire weekly and get zero motes.

So basically I'll be left with farming as my only option, which means I won't be getting these mounts/pets.

Don't understand all the salt - you need so many of these because there's so much cool stuff you can craft!

You can get enough motes for 2 mounts in roughly an hour, how is that unreasonable? They're some of the quickest mounts to obtain in the game!

Some of you commenters are totally wild, camping 180 hours for TLPD? I sleep. Farm mobs for 30 minutes? REEEEEE I WAKE.

I thought we addressed this earlier. Making people collect absurd amounts of hard-to-get materials isn't fun. And this is a game. Not only that, but this is for collecting pets and mounts, which have zero impact on the rest of the game.

Are we good? Can you make these materials easier for everyone to get so they can actually enjoy the game? Great, thanks for talking with me.

If you're reading this in 2023 / Dragonflight or beyond, disregard all farming strategies claimed here and listen to ~~mine.~~ Dariuswow's, 3 comments down.

Go to 60, 42 in ZM. Fly up on top of the pillar and look for the Thieving Raptora. Stand on the lip of the edge on the opposite side where it spawns, seen in screenshot I will have submitted to this page. If you stand exactly there, the bird will INSTANTLY respawn upon death. At this point in time, you can now literally just one shot this thing over, and over, and over. You'll also get some SL crafting mats which may or may not be worth anything in the future. This is way faster and more braindead than anything else on this page.

I don't have raw data, but I was farming roughly 20 motes per minute on this bird.

EDIT: I submitted the screenshot, but I guess WoWhead decided to deny it or something because it never showed up. Oh well I guess.

EDIT 2: I believe the droprate on this has been substantially nerfed. Went back to try and get some leftover stuff and I'm getting 7-10 per minute now, vs the original 20, and no mats or anything. Not sure why Blizzard cared enough to nerf old expansion drop rates, but okay.

If you're using the strategy outlined in the most recent comment (standing on the edge of a cliff and killing the same bird repeatedly), here's some tips.

There are two ways you can go about this: a faster farm where you actively kill it when it spawns, or a slower farm where you can AFK. You will generally get 25-30 motes every five minutes through the AFK method (with caveats), and usually 20-30+ more then that if you choose to activemurder. The reason why AFK is slower is that it depends on the bird aggroing to you automatically, which can take a second or so. Both will obviously depend on your personal DPS, so you're best off using a lv 70. You're looking at about 300-350 per hour for AFK, and usually 500-600 for active. It all depends on what YOUR goals are.

ABOUT AFK METHOD:
You need to use a pet class, preferably as a spec with a Mastery that scales pet damage. Unholy, Beast Mastery, and Demonology all fit this bill. Other classes might have controllable pets (Frost Mage's Elemental or Ele Shaman's Primal Elemental) but these are unlikely to pump out enough DPS on their own to justify using them. You want to face AWAY from the bird, since if you're lv 70 you're likely to avoid attacks - and attacks are less likely to be avoided if you're facing away. Have pet on Defensive. Bird spawns, aggros to you, your pet kills it for you. Walk away and do as you please, and make sure to loot the bodies once in a while.

If you decide to use Demonology (and thus have Wild Imps), Animal Companion, or the Skulker talent for DK, these may aggro the bird instead of you. Your main pet won't help out, and it will take twice as long to kill. You can also choose to have Pocopoc out for extra DPS, but he also won't help out Skulker/Wild Imp/Stable Pet. From my experience, Demo w/ Felguard kills fastest but the BM Hunter is the least problematic as long as you don't use AC.

ABOUT ACTIVE METHOD:
You could potentially do this with any class, but your higher geared 70s is obviously preferable. You want to be able to kill it quickly without moving into it's slow spawn radius. You don't really need to worry much about anything else. You could potentially do this with a party, but at that point, you might as well go back to the old spot and cause a hyperspawn at the portals.

FINAL NOTE: You'll also get a bunch of Glimmers of Motion. If you don't need them, you can vendor them off...or mail it to a toon on a different server and THEN sell them for some cross-server gold.

I somewhat 'improved' bigfoot1291's solo farm at the Thieving Raptora at 60, 42:

Only works on 'classes with permanent pets' (i.e. Hunters and Warlocks) AND have the Loot-A-Rang toy.
Go there, land on the top, where the Raptora is within its nest.
Call your pet, use the Pet Move To command to 'pin' the pet on the pilar, then activate its stance to either defensive or Assist (First one makes the farm a bit more 'passive', the other one, if you'r gonna attack the bird yourself too).
Now here's the extra, you (Hunter/Warlock) can jump to the ledge below, moving a bit south (so the toy can reach for the loot), and just stand there, the raptora will insta-spawn when killed, either by your pet or you.

From my personal experience, it's better with the assist stance, while you watch a video on top of the game's UI (windowed), with the game in foreground (so you can still attack+loot, while watching the movie/series/anime/etc). 2 in 1, less boring farm.

definitely create a target+attack macro for this if you are going to be sitting in that one spot farming the thieving raptora. I thought bc of my attacks I had to sit closer, but somebody helped me figure it out and it was respawning so fast - so definitely sit at the edge of that pillar it's on. Managed to get about 600 in an hour. Good luck farming! :)

Using the strategy of bigfoot1291 , i am able to farm 217 motes in 10 minutes, i am oneshotting the bird with my dh and i get a kill roughly every 3 seconds.

i managed to make the whole ordeal of farming genesis mote automatic.

you need to be using an engineer and either a warlock or a hunter and farm the Thieving Raptora spot with the following macro

Had previously completed all mounts but needed 850 motes for the snail pets to speed up the zaralek cavern snail mount grind

Did a 10 minute test and 5 minute test using in game timer on my survival hunter (447 ILVL) at my gear levels every raptor dies in 1 GCD without fail and spawn every 2 seconds
10 minutes - 228 motes - 1368 motes per hour
5 minutes - 117 motes - 1404 motes per hour
So with decent gear you can easily expect upwards of 1.3k motes an hour

I assume the people getting 600-700 an hour with active play are lower gear levels or casters taking multiple GCD's to kill the birds

It looks like something changed. The droprate is so much lower suddenly. i was farming on wednesday november 15 and thursday november 16 and everything was like always. got over 2000 motes on both days combined. i was there again on wednesday november 22 and the droprate was laughable low. the bird is still respawning very fast but they drop almost no motes anymore. after one hour i got only around 180. left for the day and came back 24 hours later to see if something changed again but no. i can kill 50 birds and get under 20 motes.

can someone confirm it?

I can confirm the drop changed at the pillar with the raptora at / way 61 43 ; I used to loot 11 motes / minute plus skinning materials (desolate leather, pallid bones...), in addition to glimmer of motion and raptora lattice.
Now it is less than 4 motes / minutes ; skinning materials are not looted anymore ; still some glimmer of motion and raptora lattice.
It hurts...

So forget about it and go to /way 42 75 as advised by Dariuswow ; there is a continuous spawn of mobs at a portal, with for me roughly the same 11 motes / minutes drop rate, based on 1 hour farm (feral, AOE).

EDIT : if you can group with someone, send him to /way 40.7 73.7, there is a portal with 2 mobs spawning ; then every minute, max 1 min30 sec, swap positions, loot each other pile of bodies and keep farming

Can confirm the best spot is still at the gorger spawns near Genesis Fields. As a hunter, I stood exactly at /way 42.07, 75.20

I was able to hit the two repeated spawning gorgers and the one almost in front of me. WoW's camera also determines what you can actually target, so you should be able to hit all three AND loot all three without ever having to move. I often use Fetch to let my pet pick up the loot so I wouldn't have to accidentally loot one that was just out of reach and have to move back, but that's just a minor issue.

Update for 2024: Ignore all other "best farm spot" comments as Blizzard has gone back to nerf the Thieving Raptora nest hyperspawn. While you can still instantly respawn the bird, the drop rate has been drastically reduced. A half dozen or more kills will yield but a single genesis mote.

All hope is not lost for those crazy enough to still want to farm Shadowlands content. Once again, the Genesis Field portals are the best place to farm for motes. Specifically at /way 41.96 72.82

Two guards are standing on opposite sides of a portal where a pair of Frothing Gorgers will continuously spawn as fast as you can kill them. They drop at least one mote each nearly 100% of the time and can even drop two. While it may take slightly longer to kill them at level 70, there are two mobs and you will be getting 2-4 motes on each spawn. This will be considerably faster than the bird now in 10.2.5.

I went to the suggested spot on my hunter, and nothing. Thought about which toon was my main back in shadowlands, and switched to that. They started dropped as described.

So if you're not getting any, there's obviously some prerequisite for them that I had long forgotten. So, try switching characters like I did.

The grind is long, arduous and mind-numbingly tedious. It's established and I can confirm it that the portal at 42.10, 72.71 is the best location. For an estimation you get 100 motes per 6:30-7:30 minutes (Yes, I reset the stopwatch every 100 motes as a side activity to keep me sane). I don't have to offer a better farm location but I can offer pieces of advice to make the farm a bit more tolerable and help you preserve your sanity:

1) First of all, which creatures can drop the motes. All beasts, herb creatures and devourers. The mawsworn, the automa and earth elementals do not drop them at all.
2) Do NOT buy lattices at all. You will have all of them earlier than halfway of having all the motes needed if you target specific mobs. I'd only suggest buying Poultrid Lattices because they drop from treasures, so you cannot farm motes at the same time.
3) Align you farm with other goals. Say you need 4 Vombata Lattices, perform laps around the pools where the Corrupted Architect is located, killing all beast mobs. Whenever you get a lattice, the dopamine surge will keep you sane.
4) Set daily farming goals. The grind is way too long to be done in a single day. What I did was set a daily goal of 1000 motes per day or 500 when I wasn't in the mood. (OCD helps alot).
5) Do "smart breaks" as you farm towards you daily goal. What I did: every 100 motes I flew around killing rares (possible for second or third time to loot anima), looting treasures, do quests if you need the reputation for the paragon chest recipe, or farm specific mob types like the viperids and snails that are way too few and drop precious lattices.

The hardest materials to get are Glimmer of Cunning from Tarachnid Eggs treasures (there are only 4 of them up at best at the same time and have a really unpredictable respawn pattern) , Viperid Lattice because there are only a few mobs that drop this east of Pilgrim's Grace and Helicid Lattice which once more drop by the limited snail mobs where Orixal spawns and the snails at the small pool northeast of Catalyst gardens. Aurelid Lattice is also pretty limited as it drops from Hirukon and aurelids that you can fish when Fish Eyes WQ is available.

6) Bonus: Don't forget you can get 10-25 of those from Olea Cache and 20-25 from the Requisites Originator once a week.

For your weekly Genesis motes from the Requisites Originator:
Travel to Resonant Peaks (50.8/31.3) -> 60 Cosmic Energy -> Travel to Interior Locus (costs 30 energy) -> Travel Repertory Alcove (costs 30 energy) -> Select "Restore Genesis Potencies".

For anyone who wants it and has it unlocked but can't remember how!
(Providing you have done the pre-requisites which is too long to explain here)

It feels like the drop rate has been buffed with the War Within pre patch. Rares in Zereth Mortis have more health so there are for sure some changes to the zone. Not sure if this is the case but feels much higher after about 30 minutes of killing.

- standing at 42.43 74.99 and hitting arcane explosion as mage I get 30-35 motes per minute (make sure to position yourself so you hit all 3 mobs (the 2 from the portal and 1 fighting the friendly NPC “Fauna Tender”)

PROS:

- 30-35 motes per 1 minute
- semi-afk

CONS:

- mana draining but with “Evocation” and “Shifting Power” you should be ok and never or barely reach 0 mana

TIPS:

- learn “static cloud” passive (more dmg)
- loot every less than 2 minutes (mobs despawn after 2 minutes)

NOTE:

- I seem to one max 2 shot the mobs and my mana is 3.7m (591 ilvl)

I just finished farming motes to collect all the mounts and pets! Here's how I did it:

Class: Druid
Using Sunfire and Moonfire made it easy to quickly tag mobs and farm efficiently.

Farming Route
Stay within the area shown on this screenshot

Strategy
Focus on tagging all the bees in the marked area with Sunfire.
Group them up and eliminate them in big packs.
You can gather 4-5 large packs per full lap of the route.

Results
Each clear yielded around 100 motes, and I found this method much faster and more efficient than farming the respawning mobs at the portal.

In Zereth Mortis, there's a portal at /way 41.35 70.33, a Frothing Gorger comes out approximately every 10 seconds. At level 80 / iLvl 616 (The War Within), it can be killed before the next one comes out. Most drop Genesis Motes.

I finally finished up Synthe-supersized! and farmed my last ~2500 motes fairly quickly by killing Vespoid Worker and related vespoid mobs. There are 2 nearby areas with fairly high mob density, around 62,60 and then travel to around 52,43. I found that by the time I cleared out both areas I could circle back and mobs had respawned. The other benefit to this method is that these mobs have a chance to drop Vespoid Lattice, which you may need for crafting or it currently sells for quite a lot of gold.

If you have the luxury of 2 accounts, it obviously speeds things up if you can get a second toon up and running to join you on the farm (remember you need to complete Dealic Understanding + Protoform Synthesis to enable mote drops). I think getting 2x the motes with this method really saved my sanity because this is such a long farm. Even without 2 accounts, you can put alts to work. I would sometimes do the weekly quest Patterns Within Patterns for Tribute of the Enlightened Elders and kill the world boss on alts and then funnel the Cyphers of the First Ones (yay warbands) to buy Olea Cache. The olea cache only has ~20 motes, but just by running alts through the zone I was also picking up 100+ motes per toon/week. The Requisites Originator also offers ~20 motes per week via Genesis Potencies, but that will require a bit more set-up on alts. If you want to keep it very low-effort on alts you might consider just killing the world boss which will provide a decent amount of Cyphers of the First Ones.

The best farming spot as of TWW is still the gorgers and scavengers at 41, 16. 70, 98. You can pull around 6 of them and down them together or sit by the portal at 42,11. 72, 67 which will quickly spawn two gorgers that drop 1-2 motes.

Lazy farmer's style: go to Genesis Fields and stand at /way 41.90, 72.89 heading east.
You'll simply pull one Frothing Gorger with a distant attack with short recharge and melee the other. Both respawn in no time. Farmed 260 motes in 17 minutes which means 15 pieces per minute.
Advantages: you won't have to rotate camera and run at all, just stand and click with your other hand resting 8-)

Just adding this as a tip: Make the Genesis Motes the LAST thing you get when farming Protoform Synthesis stuff. I know it can seem daunting since you need so many of them but I am currently 1400 kills into brambles looking for the last Glimmer I needed and in that time have farmed an additional 1000 motes.

Killing Frothing Gorgers seemed slow to me. Decided to kill the Insect swarms instead.

The farm mentioned by Cunderwood absolutely seems to be the best one, but if that's taken/you need some variety, I'd suggest heading to the Catalyst Gardens!

Killing all the mobs here nets you ~250-300 motes every 20 minutes, and mobs here have a chance to drop a variety of Protoforge items:

Glimmer of Renewal (big flower mobs; this has a low drop rate, so it is worth farming some motes here!)
Glimmer of Multiplicity (tiny flower mobs)
Glimmer of Vigilance (most overgrown mechanical mobs)
Glimmer of Survival (Creeping Brambles around the area)
Bufonid Lattice (frog mobs)

Beyond this, there are two rares that can be killed on repeat approx. every 15 minutes (even if they don't have the rare symbol after the first kill), alongside various respawning treasures. Definitely a good second area to farm some motes!

Spam this macro to auto target and kill the gorgers and scavengers (I'm bad at macros, someone can probably improve it).
/tar Frothing Gorger
/cast Sunfire
/cleartarget
/tar Insatiable Scavenger
/cast Sunfire
/cleartarget

Loot every couple of minutes, or add the Loot-A-Rang to the macro for more automation.
/use Loot-a-rang

This setup allows you to turn your brain off and farm.

Been doing a little pre-Midnight farming, and I think the portal at 42.48 75.56 is my best spot - I am averaging about 30 motes/minute if I dedicate some attention to it (the one at 42.19 72.79, with the two Frothing Gorgers, gets me about 20/minute). Other classes/specs might see different results, but what I like about this one is that I can plant my feet in front of the portal and cleave a Frothing Gorger and Insatiable Scavenger every few seconds, while also reaching an extra Insatiable Scavenger a little to the left without having to move. Consecration on the ground makes sure the Scavenger that comes out of the portal doesn't run past me (which it will do, if I don't catch it), and then it's cleaving Judgment on the two mortal adds, and another Judgment on the bonus Scavenger; I even macro'd it so I don't have to target the bonus one by hand.
