Pathing Notes

Compared to its max-level version, Frost will feel quite different while leveling since it can only unlock the build-defining capstones late in the process. This leveling build prioritizes talents that deal AoE damage and damage in short bursts to efficiently clear packs of quest mobs.

Follow the tree to unlock the core abilities and satisfy the 8 point requirement to go further down the tree.
Next, rush down to Pillar of Frost and pick up the rest of the Remorseless Winter buffs.
Now fill out the middle of the tree to get enough points spent to unlock the final tier. Northwinds and Rage of the Frozen Champion should come first since they buff a primary AoE ability.
Obliteration and Killing Streak are the first capstones you want to pick.
Next, Icy Death Torrent is a powerful proc. Also grab The Long Winter.
The tree is now complete for leveling. Finish out with a few passive talents for the final points. Icebreaker is a good choice in a build that takes other buffs to Howling Blast..

The War Within Death Knight Class Tree

Pathing Notes
Death Knights can grab their major utility and offensive throughput for leveling fairly early into the tree. The later levels offer a lot of flexibility for talent picks and order. The following is a suggested path through the tree.

First, unlock the top abilities from the tree. Grab Runic Attenuation, Improved Death Strike, and Cleaving Strikes.
Afterward, fill out the right side down to Wraith Walk and Unholy Endurance.
Unlock a few key talents from the middle: Anti-Magic Barrier, March of Darkness, and Veteran of the Third War. Also, grab Blood Scent to set up a later connection to the lower tree.
We need to satisfy the 20-point requirement to unlock the bottom, so fill out the left side down to Gloom Ward.
Progress through the lower tree, grabbing Rune Mastery, Subduing Grasp, and Blood Draw.
Finish the tree with Death's Echo, then fill in your remaining point with some assorted passives..

You suggest Fel path but the calculator shows the nature path.

10/08/2025: In the Legion Remix section, there's a mismatch in the text/graphic. The text states "As a Frost Death Knight, you will want to choose the Fel Path of the Artifact Tree.", but currently the graphic shows the Nature Path activated.

Nature path is better when near max gear and at max gear, the dreadlord gets outscaled by your normal damage.
Also, shattering blade ends up being much better than breath, because things dies too quick to keep a good breath.
Many very useful talents for speeding are not taken, many useless talents for speeding are taken, what happened in that guide ?

I tried to prioritize mastery over crit over haste, but then I see frost dks who do a lot better than me in raids with a lot more crit than me, and I feel like my haste is so low I can't keep breath up as long as I could when I didn't focus on any specific stat (and hence had more haste), I'm skeptical about this stat priority, the good frost dks I see have A LOT of all the 3 stats.

Edit: must point out that I've been trying deathbringer instead of riders, however when it comes to keeping breath up having a decent amount of haste helps, with 40% my uptime is terrible, with 100% I can keep it up almost indefinitely, and that seems to help with dps overall, even if mastery ends up being lower, this is when it comes to fights lasting example 1 min, like soloing a world boss with around 650% versatility, while for quick fights like farm raids, where bosses rarely live more than 15 sec, the mastery > crit > haste priority makes sense, as 15 sec breath is achievable even with low haste.

In fact for 15 sec fights, I would say the most important is reaching 100% crit, then as much mastery as possible, then haste, seems to give better results than going full mastery and just 40% crit.
