Why You Should Play Demonology Warlock in Dragonflight (and Why You Shouldn't)
As we look forward into Dragonflight there are a lot of reasons to be interested in playing Demonology and definitely some that may deter you from playing it. The goal today will be to highlight some spectacular things about the spec and some pitfalls to help guide you towards one of the more interesting specs in the game.
Luckily for Demonology the loss of Covenant abilities and legendaries does not hit us too hard at all as all our main legendaries have been put into the talent tree (along with our previous tier bonus from Shadowlands) and losing
Forme d’âme
does not matter too much for us as we now always have access to
Ruée ardente
for movement instead, which is much better with it being both toggleable and always usable, not restricted by 1 use every 90s.
Why You Should Play Demonology Warlock in Dragonflight
Overall there are a lot of great reasons to play Demonology in Dragonflight and one of the big things, for me, is that we didn't see another overhaul of our core systems and we're able to still enjoy/play the spec as we have been for the majority of Shadowlands. One thing that has evolved however is our ability to break out of a previous niche of predominately single target towards a more broad area of being able to spec further into this niche or expand on our base AoE to great lengths for extremely big AoE burst windows. Demonology is one of the more well rounded specs for this expansion with a lot of variety in the spec tree. With little changes here and there, you can move towards single target or more towards AoE very easily, even to the point where you can keep your entire first two levels of the tree the same and simply swap sides for your capstones to switch between the two modalities very easily (not 100% optimally mind you but good enough that it can be that simple).
Level 70 Talent Points for Demonology Warlock
One of the biggest things for Demonology is being able to pick up dual capstone talents to really feel empowered at level 70. You'll be able to pick up some of the big talents that pair together with what we're currently using with
Invocation : tyran démoniaque
,
Dessin du grand démoniste
by picking up
Portail de Néant
,
Volonté de Ner’zhul
and
Ambition de Gul’dan
along with the newly buffed
Chef du gang des diablotins
. You start to really feel immersed in the master of demons vibe that Demonology has tried to exemplify throughout the years. The ability to stack your 90s (or lower with
Dessin du grand démoniste
) with a very strong cooldown cycle with
Portail de Néant
spewing out a very large damage contributor in
Ambition de Gul’dan
feels (and is) extremely powerful.
Not only can you pick up the full left and middle capstones for a more single target/raid boss focused build but you can shift the points from the left side and put them into the far right side for a very similar effect for a more AoE centric build getting
Guillotine
. Of course you'll also have access to
Implosion
and be specced into
Chef du gang des diablotins
which when imploded have a chance to spawn a new Wild Imp (and this Imp can also be a Gang Boss) which can lead to big initial implosions after
Invocation : tyran démoniaque
refunding a large percentage of Wild Imps back to you for another Implosion right after (or soon after). Getting your
Invocation : tyran démoniaque
down to the minute mark is also very powerful with this build in combination with
Fracas gangrené
and
Force démoniaque
further stacking your AoE damage profile.
Demonology Warlock Utility in Dragonflight
Warlock in general will still always bring all the little things they've always brought with them for Mythic+ and raids so we don't get any new utility for this expansion but we have always been stacked with utility overall and the fact that we bring all that
and
get even more tanky through the class tree with things like
Étreinte démoniaque
,
Robustesse démoniaque
,
Sombre traité
,
Donation régulière
and the staple combination of
Synergie gangrenée
and
Lien spirituel
will make us still very desirable for most content overall.
Why You Shouldn't Play Demonology Warlock in Dragonflight
Luckily for Demonology Warlocks there are no pressing bugs to the spec that inhibit an abilities usage at the moment, there were a few bugs with
Fracas gangrené
and
Force démoniaque
but they have since been fixed and there are no major detractors from that spectrum for Demonology. However, there are still some pitfalls of the spec that may deter you from having interest in playing the spec.
Complexity of Rotation
Generally speaking Demonology Warlock is simple in the way you deal damage. Cast abilities to generate Soul Shards, use those Soul Shards to summon demons (basically active DoTs), however there can be a lot of nuance in setting up your cooldowns for maximum efficiency or in some cases, completely modifying your whole rotation when using them that can look intimidating.
Portail de Néant
One of the biggest drawbacks for this ability is the fact that you have to completely alter your building/spending of Soul Shards during the 15s window of time that the portal is active. Generally speaking your rotation is to build 3 Soul Shards then spend them on
Main de Gul’dan
while casting
Appel des traqueffrois
for free with
Appel démoniaque
or by spending 2 Soul Shards. However, during Nether Portal's duration you want to get out as many, low costing (aka 1-2 Soul Shard) casts as possible to maximize the number of demons you summon from the portal both for its down damage and the further enhance/buff your Pit Lord that will be summoned afterwards from
Ambition de Gul’dan
. This means holding/casting things like
Grimoire : Gangregarde
and
Invocation : démon abject
for these windows along with changing your normal rotation to be more
streamlined
building on to 1 Soul Shard (or 2 if you cast your instant cast
Trait démoniaque
s) then immediately spending them on
Main de Gul’dan
to get another demon out of the portal.
Because of this you will want to/need to find opportunities where you can stand still and cast pretty much non stop for the full 15s or you lose a lot of value from this cooldown which can be difficult to do during both raid and Mythic+ settings where you will often need to move out of XYZ mechanics. Because of this you could be seen as very turret like for the duration of the cooldown or be considered a detriment if you cast it then have to move and get no damage out of the cooldown.
Invocation : tyran démoniaque
At its core the Demonic Tyrant is not that complex of an ability; cast your spell, Tyrant comes out and makes your demons do more damage and stick around for another 15s (the duration of Tyrant). However you should be looking to optimize this a lot further by getting out as many Wild Imps as possible before all your other longer duration demons expire, things like:
Appel des traqueffrois
,
Grimoire : Gangregarde
and
Invocation : démon abject
. Because of this you are playing a mini game inside of your cooldown window(s) where you are pushing yourself to the limit to have your Tyrant cast finish in the last second of your other "big" demons or cooldown related demons all while maximizing your Wild Imp count.
The game within the game within the game is not for everyone and certainly is something that may draw you away from being interested in playing Demonology.
Tier Sets
As far as tier sets go ours is nothing special to write home about:
Two piece: Demon Bolt and Felstorm damage increased by 20%.
Four piece: Demon Bolt has a chance to make your next Hand of Gul'dan instant and deal 50% increased damage.
A simple and non interactive or rotation changing bonus for our two piece and the four piece has a fairly low chance to proc and is not easily noticable when it is procced which may lead into missing some
Main de Gul’dan
casts as you go into cooldown setup phases. Compare dot other spec bonuses these are fairly tame and lackluster essentially just increasing the base damage of 3 abilities in our toolkit without much thought.
