Timewalking Content Will Scale Up To Player Level in Patch 11.0.5 - No More Timewalking Gear Minmaxing

A minor change recently announced in Patch 11.0.5 will drastically change how Timewalking Dungeons work. Dungeons will scale to the player's level instead of the player being scaled down to the dungeon's level.
This change is being made to help Blizzard maintain balance and the intended tuning of Timewalking dungeons, but it has a very sad side effect on a niche activity: Minmaxing gear for Timewalking content.
DUNGEONS AND RAIDS
Timewalking dungeons will now scale enemies to your current level as opposed to scaling you to the level of the dungeon.
Developer’s note: Timewalking now uses the same scaling system as Chromie Time, allowing us to better maintain Timewalking dungeons and control their intended tuning.
But What Does This Mean?
This effectively transforms Timewalking dungeons to follow Chromie Time rules, by adding dynamic scaling to enemies. Level 30 players will be facing level 30 mobs, and Level 80 players will be facing level 80 mobs. This scaling was already seen during Remix: Mists of Pandaria,
with hilarious side effects
.
Previously, Timewalking dungeons followed a different scaling rule, with the players instead being scaled down to the level of the dungeon. This meant any items, enchants and gems that player has equipped are also scaled down. This rule has a niche, but fun side effect: Items from past expansions become useful again. Some of these power gains include:
Effects from crafted gear of the past, including old enchants and gems;
Azerite Gear and Traits from Battle for Azeroth;
Gear with guaranteed multiple sockets from Mists of Pandaria and even further in the past;
Items with powerful effects of the past such as old Legendaries and Trinkets.
This created a niche but very involved community that looked into min-maxing as much of their gear as possible to maximize their effectiveness in Timewalking content.
Timewalking gearing became more mainstream with the introduction the Timewalking version of the Mage Tower near the end of Shadowlands, with players looking into ways to improve their chances with the tower's grueling challenges in a scaled-down format. We even have a guide for the Mage Tower Timewalking, including means of getting more powerful gear from past expansions!
Mage Tower Timewalking Gearing Guide - Best Gear, Gearing Strategies, Gear Sources
But Is This Really Needed? Timewalking Is So Easy!
Yes, Timewalking content in general is easy enough where none of this is required
. But the thrill of doing the maximum you can and a feeling of reaching full, final, concrete Best in Slot gear (something not as common with how gearing works nowadays) is really fun.
This niche has also spawned communities such as the
Timewalking Discord
, which offers Timewalking gear guides for all classes and specs and regularly engages in competitions such as Timewalking dungeon and raid speedruns.
Will This Affect the Mage Tower/Deaths of Chromie?
It is currently unknown whether this will affect the Mage Tower or the Deaths of Chromie scenario, as the hotfix only mentions Timewalking dungeons (and the Mage Tower has more restrictive gearing rules than standard Timewalking dungeons). The PTR has been unstable this week so we haven't been able to check ourselves.
