Nozdormu, the Bronze Dragon Aspect, is tasked with safeguarding time, but he is also destined to become corrupted and transform into Murozond, leader of the Infinite Dragonflight, which seeks to shatter time instead. As Dragonflight approaches, Nozdormu's corruption seems close at hand, but can this terrible fate be avoided?
Murozond and the Infinite Dragonflight
In an
interview with JudgeHype
, Ion Hazzikostas mentioned that the revamped Uldaman dungeon will play a role in Dragonflight's pre-patch event. As we have
already reported
, the Infinite Dragonflight is a major focus of this dungeon, and in fact manage to prevent us from achieving our goal: to obtain a certain disc containing the knowledge that may help the Dragon Aspects regain their power. As the Infinite Drake Chrono-Lord Deios flees, he declares that there will soon be only one Dragon Aspect: Murozond.
Chrono-Lord Deios: Your efforts are impressive... but in vain.
Chrono-Lord Deios: The timelines are converging. There will be only one Aspect... and Murozond shall be... Infinite!
In another hint that Nozdormu's fate will play a role in Dragonflight, the Bronze Dragon Aspect voices the
Dragonflight date announcement trailer
, and in fact the trailer's thumbnail art shows him staring reflectively at falling sands of time. Behind him is his Aspect form, seemingly still uncorrupted, yet in a shadow that calls Murozond to mind.
The story of Murozond and the Infinite Dragonflight is a complicated one, as time-travel stories tend to be. Around the time of the Cataclysm, we learned that Nozdormu, the Bronze Dragon Aspect, is destined to suffer a terrible fate: He will become corrupted and transform into Murozond, leader of the Infinite Dragonflight, which seeks to destroy everything the Bronze Dragonflight stands for.
When we faced and defeated this future version of Nozdormu in the End Time dungeon, it closed a loop - one that Nozdormu himself warned us would repeat.
“At last it has come to pass. The moment of my demise. The loop is closed. My future self will cause no more harm. Still, in time, I will... fall to madness. And you, heroes... will vanquish me. The cycle will repeat. So it goes. What matters is that Azeroth did not fall; that we survived to fight another day. All that matters... is this moment.”
In Dragonflight, Chromie reminds the player about the conflict with the Infinite Flight during Cataclysm, as they are once again a major threat.
The Infinite Flight directly opposes the ideals of the Bronze Flight and the Timewalkers. We're charged with upholding the timeways, but they believe that time shouldn't be contained in any way. Their ultimate goal is to force our Aspect and leader, Nozdormu, into a terrible future version of himself called Murozond.
We came into conflict with them years ago, and thought they were defeated. But it looks like we still have more work to do.
From Chromie's explanation, Nozdormu's transformation into Murozond is specifically caused by the shattering of the timeways, which he does in order to prevent his own death - the knowledge of which he was given when he became the Bronze Dragon Aspect.
Murozond's the counter part to our own Aspect and leader, Nozdormu. We only know that he's the alternate version of Nozdormu that, after being showed his death by the Titans, was tricked into shattering the timeways to prevent it and instead caused this transformation.
We faced Murozond and won several years ago when he allied himself with Deathwing to bring about the "End Time". We don't know if Eternus and the Infinites are still trying to cause Nozdormu's transformation, or if they have something else planned.
Interestingly, Chromie seems to suggest the Infinite Dragonflight helps to bring about Nozdormu's transformation into Murozond, their prophecized leader. Since Murozond forged the Infinite Dragonflight according to
Chronicle Volume III
, this highlights how the flight works outside of time itself - dedicated to creating the leader who will create it.
Eternus is an Infinite dragon. Her flight is devoted to deteriorating the timeways in persuit of turning Nozdormu into the prophesied leader of the Infinites: Murozond.
We're luck that the temple has good defenses. They might not have foreseen threats like Eternus, but even clear visions of the future can turn out different than when you first see them.
Nozdormu's transformation into Murozond and his death seem absolutely fated. After all, his attempts to prevent the latter is what's destined to force him into becoming the former. But is there hope? Can Nozdormu still avoid this terrible future?
It's hard to tell. As Chromie stated, Nozdormu's transformation into Murozond comes as the result of his attempts to prevent his own death. However, the moment of his death - dying by our hands - requires his transformation into Murozond. If Nozdormu does not seek to prevent his death, can he at least avoid transformation into Murozond - or does he have to accept the transformation in order to accept his death, since he is destined to die as Murozond by our hands?
Destiny or not, the Infinite Dragonflight clearly isn't taking any chances. We still do not yet know who the final boss of Dragonflight will be - but it's becoming harder to believe Nozdormu can survive the next expansion.
