No More Character Customization Planned in Shadowlands Community Backlash

One of the hottest topics coming out of BlizzConline 2021 is the unexpected announcement that Blizzard was
not planning any more character customization updates
in Shadowlands. While the expansion launched with a major overhaul to the character creator and a
number of new customizations
, not all races received the same level of changes, with Nightbourne being left out in the cold.
April interview with Zoltan
For the initial release of Shadowlands, the focus is on the original races. Character customizations is an ongoing project and they're never completely done.
In interviews with both
Zoltan
and
Polygon
, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas and Art Director Ely Cannon cited character customization as an ongoing project, though that seems to have been put on hold in favor of other content.
July interview with Wowhead
We're working vigorously to get the majority of customizations done for ship. We potentially will make more customization in the future, but we're focusing on getting as much into the game as we can right now.
Comparing statements from
our interview last July
to those during BlizzConline, it seems like there may have been mixed signals. It doesn't sound like any customization plans have been
cancelled
, but that focus has instead shifted to new art for upcoming gameplay content for 9.1 and beyond.
BlizzConline
We're not going to add more character customizations to Shadowlands.
We want to make sure that we put the time in, that we're very thoughtful about it, and that we release new customizations when its gonna be really good for the game, really good for the players, and that's still gonna happen in parallel with getting new content out too.
Still, that's little consolation to players who may have been expecting more and the community has not responded well, arguing that there is no "right time" for adding simple improvements like extra eye colors or hairstyles - things that don't require a content driven gameplay reason to add.
Keyboardturn
has been one major advocate of increased customization, having created
several
feedback
threads
and even showcasing their own hair body concepts to create thicker Trolls, Vrykul-shaped Kul Tiran, Void Elf braids instead of tentacles, and more.
While it may not seem like a major selling point to some, character customization is often considered of as a core element of RPGs, and despite all the good things BlizzConline revealed, this is easily one of the largest disappointments. It's caused such a stir across
Reddit
,
social media
, and
the forums
, with some players going so far as to
demand refunds
over the issue. Given the backlash, it will be interesting to see if Blizzard reverses this decision, or at least expedites the release of more Heritage armor sets - another feature revealed to
not be coming any time soon
.
