WARNING: SHADOWLANDS STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Story So Far
The Kael'thas Sunstrider portion of the Venthyr Covenant campaign happens in Chapter 6 of the
, "Confronting Sin". Below, we have a resume of everything that has happened on the first five chapters, if you want context for the Venthyr Covenant storyline up to the point we're questing at.
The Threat to the Shadowlands and all of reality will require the aid and loyalty of the denizens of Revendreth. To that end, you have bound your service to Prince Renathal and his new Court of Harvesters to help turn the tide of this conflict and restore the anima that was stolen to the realms it belongs to.
With your help, Prince Renathal has reclaimed the ancient ruin of Sinfall for you to use as the base of your operations.
Prince Renathal has a plan to seize control of Revendreth, whether Sire Denatrhius still rules or not. To do so, he has employed your help to convene a meeting of the Court of Harvesters.
Using various contacts and infiltration techniques, you were able to extend an invitation to the three Harvesters who might be willing to talk. With the Prince, the Accuser and the Curator already on your side, the Court is able to reconvene with six of its seven members.
The court convened, but the Venthyr were not swayed by Prince Renathal's words. He has lost too many times for them to trust him.
The Countess holds the Medallion of Desire and rules over the Castle Ward and its nobles. Theotar, the Mad Duke, has a plan that may be able to wrestle the medallion from the Countess without incurring an open enemy.
Theotar dispatched you to the Old Gate to find his old butler and house staff. The plan is to find Theotar's old estate where a secret entrance to the Countess' private chambers lays in wait.
Upon securing Theotar's previous estate you were able to use a mirror there to enter into the chambers of the Countess. However, she was waiting for you... with her guards.
Though you were uninvited, you were not unexpected. The Countess proposed an alternative to stealing her medallion with a plan to undermine her opposition. If it works, she would gladly hand her medallion over.
To that end, the Countess sent you into the noble district of Redelav where you gathered poisonous flower petals, invited the elite to a party, and murdered one of her political rivals.
While attending a party thrown by the Countess you had the chance to discuss with the various houses who else might be in league to eliminate their host. After accusing one of the Houses of conspiring against the Countess, you dispatched their leader swiftly and publicly. Pleased with your actions, the Countess provided her medallion, having proven her power comes from... other skills.
The Medallion of Avarice was hidden by its Harvester, the Curator, before she was exiled to the Maw. Now that she is back, her mind is not stable enough to retrieve the hidden medallion on her own and requires your help in the Catacombs Ward.
The Curator hid her medallion on the other side of a very special mirror. Before her capture, she broke the mirror and entrusted the two halves to her underlings. After some searching of the Catacombs you were able to rescue Watcher Emil, the Curator's most trusted aide, along with his half of the mirror.
The second half of the mirror was in the hands of the traitorous Sinkeeper Mateo, the Curator's old protegé who had more ambition than sense. Storming the Curator's old mansion of Archivam, you were able to retrieve the other half of the mirror.
With the mirror repaired, you were able to venture into the Curator's secret crypt and recover the Medallion of Avarice from its hiding place.
Prince Renathal's plan to harness the power of the medallions requires a conduit to channel the power. Revendreth lacks the craftsmen to create such an artifact.
To commission the construction of the artifact, Prince Renathal dispatches you to Bastion. The plan is to restore an ancient mirror there. Though once used by the forces of Revendreth for nefarious purposes, it will now allow General Draven and Theotar to join you.
After a terse parlay with the denizens of Bastion, General Draven was able to request the aid of Mikanikos, the Forgelite Prime. Draven offered to make amends, and repairs, for the past sabotages performed by Revendreth.
With your help, Theotar and Draven were able to undo the damage inflicted upon the forges of Bastion and drive out the Forsworn occupying the area long enough to forge the artifact. In the fires of battle, the Crown of Harvesters was forged.
However, the unbridled power of the crown proved too potent for a mere mortal to wield, and too flooded with the echoes of Denathrius. It required purification at the Temple of Loyalty, fighting your way through legions of Forsworn Kyrian. Now cleansed of the Master's will, you were able to bring the new crown to Prince Renathal.
Chapter 6, "Confronting Sin", is supposed to start after you clear Castle Nathria at least once, as it mentions both removing Kael'thas from the raid, as well as the death of Sire Denathrius through the questline.
The Sins of Kael'thas Sunstrider
In
Confronting Sin
, Renathal mentions that our assault in Castle Nathria gave us an opportunity with a soul empowered with a dark purpose thanks to Denathrius's experiments. As this soul is from Azeroth, we're requested to help with them in the lower levels of Sinfall.
The Accuser tells us that this soul is of none other than Kael'thas Sunstrider. As he was a powerful leader in Azeroth for a time, he had an immense amount of anima power lingering within, which brought Denathrius' attention to him. Even then, according to the Venthyr, all souls deserve a chance at redemption, and as such, we will help Kael walk that path in
Someone Worth Saving
. Kael is being kept under chains, as his anima is currently quite unstable. As we request the stoneborn guards to release Kael, he immediately attempts to break free but is quickly subdued by The Accuser.
The Accuser: In his current state, Kael'thas Sunstrider is a danger to everyone.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Out of my way! I shall avenge my people!
The Accuser: Impudent child! You do not give orders here.
The Accuser: The very arrogance that doomed you in life...
We're then requested to help identify Kael'thas sins in
The Many Sins of Kael'thas Sunstrider
. The Accuser tells us that thanks to Sire Denathrius infusing Kael with immense amounts of anima, his soul is much stronger, but unstable - Pushed to the edge of his very own existence.
We then engage in a quiz with The Accuser.
The Accuser: Help me identify the true sins of Kael'thas Sunstrider.
The Accuser: What character flaw most hindered Kael'thas?
The Accuser: Jealousy...
The Accuser: ...Arrogance...
The Accuser: ...Or Greed?
The Accuser: Your arrogance swells within you, like so many other tyrants!
The Accuser: When the Sunwell was destroyed and Kael'thas was desperate to regain a magical connection to his people, who did he surrender his will to?
The Accuser: The Lich King...
The Accuser: ...The Old Gods...
The Accuser: ...Or the Burning Legion?
The Accuser: Kil'jaeden exploited your arrogance, paranoia, and obsession to bend you to his will!
The Accuser: I have found the heaviest burden on Kael'thas Sunstrider's soul.
The Accuser: How did Kael'thas fail his people?
The Accuser: Did he abandon his people...
The Accuser: ...Betray his people...
The Accuser: ...Or corrupt his people?
The Accuser: Kael'thas Sunstrider committed all of these sins against his own people!
Kael'thas Sunstrider: You cannot judge me! I did what was needed to save my people!
The Accuser: You did what you wanted and everyone else bore the consequences!
The Accuser: Kael'thas Sunstrider... You FAILED your people.
The Accuser them mentions that although he is not yet absolved of all his sins, the visions created out of the anima within him stabilized him enough to enable him to make a choice as to whether he wants to atone for his sins or not. We then head to Darkwall Tower to help The Accuser continue her redemption of Kael in
In the Shadow of our Failures
.
Chasing Atonement
As we arrive in Darkwall Tower, Kael is still a tad arrogant, but we continue on his quest for redemption by rescuing dredgers with Kael him
Dredgers Left Behind
and help drain his excess anima by reanimating soldiers in
Learning to Sacrifice
. Kael'thas mentions that The Accuser has been so focused on his negative traits that she has failed to see his strengths, and helps regain Darkwall Tower by killed the usurper named by Denathrius in
Use My Strengths
.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: This place is in shambles.
The Accuser: So are you. That is why we are here.
The Accuser: You must humble yourself to avoid extinction, Kael'thas.
The Accuser: I will prepare the ritual while you prepare yourself.
---
(after confronting the usurper of Darkwall Tower:)
Kael'thas Sunstrider: You call this a challenge? I shall burn your world to ashes!
The Accuser: No, you will show her mercy. Your enemy will live.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Mercy is a weakness! She will--
The Accuser: YOU are weakness! Your obsessive arrogance blinds you!
The Accuser: In time, I will free you of it.
We then get ready to extract Kael'thas's excessive mana in
We Each Must Carry Our Own Sins
. Because of Denathrius's infusion, Kael'thas also has had to deal with the sins of countless other souls. During the ritual, Kael'thas initially resists the extraction, wanting to maintain the extreme power from the excess anima, but eventually relents. His appearance also changes to his non-corrupted model after being freed from the anima!
The Accuser: This ritual will help you expel the excess anima trapped inside of you, Kael'thas.
The Accuser: It will hurt, but no more than you deserve.
The Accuser: Now, Kael'thas! Expel the anima!
Kael'thas Sunstrider: No... I want... its power...
The Accuser: Impotent fool! That anima binds your sinstone!
The Accuser: Release it or I will throw you into the Maw myself!
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Arrrgh!
The Accuser: Stand down! I will deal with this manifestation!
Kael'thas Sunstrider: I am... free...
The Accuser: Hardly. That sinstone still belongs to you, Kael'thas Sunstrider.
The Accuser then mentions that this was not a massive success, but it was likely the best outcome that could have happened. After completing this quest, you will receive
Chaîne de stèle du vice noire de Kael
, one of the special cloaks from the Venthyr covenant!
Discovering a Conspiracy
We then meet with The Accuser and Kael'thas at Chalice District in
Continued Care of Kael'thas
. According to the accuser, Kael still has enough sins to condemn him to the Maw, and then, we must continue being vigilant and forcing him to atone for his wrongdoings. However, the Accuser actually decides to feed upon Kael'thas constant desire for revenge this time, asking us to kill
Blackbale Betrayers
with him.
As we make our way to the Blackbane Betrayers, one of the mobs drops a strange weapon, giving us the quest
Maldraxxian Weapons
. Upon picking up this quest, Kael thinks we the Accuser won't mind if we personally go hunting whoever brought these weapons all the way from Maldraxxus in
There's Always a Paper Trail
.
Turns out the Tithelord, one of the medallion holders that Denathrius is still in league with, has allied himself with a Lich from Maldraxxus. With this, the Accuser has to leave to warn Prince Renathal, leaving Kael'thas in our care. Kael proposes that we should investigate more, as the note we brought to the Accuser mentions a meeting in Darkhaven. So, we go there in
Reconnaissance... For my, uh, Recovery
. Kael does not deny that this is still partially an act of vengeance.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: My people were massacred, our sacred font of magic defiled, all to raise a lich in undeath.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: I will incinerate this one with the heat of a thousand suns!
After peering through a keyhole, we hide on the Tithelord's carriage and hear his plan - Even though Denathrius is no more, the Tithelord is still carrying on with his plans, including supplying anima to an Archlich in Maldraxxus.
Cloaked Figure: The death of the Master--
The Tithelord: The Master's removal changes nothing.
The Tithelord: Tell Lady Ouix'Ara that I am still in charge and--
The Tithelord looks around suspiciously.
The Tithelord: My carriage is upstairs. We will finish this discussion on the way.
---
The Tithelord: Now that we are away from itching ears...
The Tithelord: You can reassure Lady Ouix'Ara that our plan remains intact.
The Tithelord: We may even be able to increase the rate that we are supplying her with anima.
Cloaked Figure: That would please the archlich greatly.
The Tithelord: Of course it would. Inform your lady I am still in charge.
The Tithelord: Everything will proceed, unless she fails to uphold her side...
Cloaked Figure: The archlich will not allow her failure.
The Tithelord: I am pleased that we see eye to eye.
Who Commands the Liches?
Kael'thas then proposes us to destroy the Maldraxxian camp in the Tithelord's abode in
Death's End Destruction
, claiming that killing betrayers must be a virtue and not a sin. He also wants to destroy the dredger giants helping transport anima to Maldraxxus in
Strategic Executions
, mentioning that although he does not understand what is the severity of the Tithelord's plans, he does know that a lich with access to power is always dangerous.
After the camp is successfully disrupted, we kill
Lady Ouix'Ara
. During the battle, Kael'thas binds the lich and manages to learn of her master's name. It is none other than Kel'Thuzad, the one lich that ended everything Kael'thas held dear.
Lady Ouix'Ara: Unbind me! What magic is this?
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Why are you sending anima to Maldraxxus? Who do you serve? Answer me!
Lady Ouix'Ara: You cannot stop my master! He is allied with the Banished One himself!
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Who? Who is your master?
Lady Ouix'Ara: I serve the mighty Kel'Thuzad! And he will conquer all of--ARRGGHH!
Lady Ouix'Ara: I... will... return...
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Kel'Thuzad! The defiler of the Sunwell! At last, I will claim justice for Silvermoon!
After this discovery, Kael'thas seems happy that he has another opportunity for revenge against Kel'Thuzad, but decides that he has much to ponder before being able to enact it. And so, we return to Sinfall in
Enough Vengeance For One Day
. The Accuser shows that she is proud of Kael'thas for his progress, but there is much to be done for him to atone still.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: Make no mistake, I will have my vengeance! But... I suppose I can afford a measure of patience. Be sure to inform the Accuser of my selflessness!
---
The Accuser: Come, Kael'thas. You served well today, but nothing has been atoned for.
Kael'thas Sunstrider: You speak of atonement?! It is the lich Kel'Thuzad who will atone for his crimes! I will burn his icy bones to ash!
The Accuser: Focus on yourself. Your hatred will only hinder you.
After this, Kael'thas is taken away by the Accuser, and we do not interact with him again. Be mindful that the Venthyr questline is still not fully available for testing, with the last chapter still unavailable.
