With the Patch 10.1.5 PTR, a new questline is available for Warlock players, ending in the ability to teach new customizations to their pets! We have previously previewed some of the new
Imp
and
Felhunter
customizations as they were datamined. Although the questline is currently not fully implemented on the PTR, we played through most of it to bring you all the details!
WARNING: Patch 10.1.5 minor story spoilers ahead!
Warlock Questline in Patch 10.1.5
The questline starts as soon as you first log in on a Warlock in Patch 10.1.5. You will receive a summons from an individual named Madam Shadow, who's try to convince people to become Warlocks. You will be requested to find her assistant, Phineas, by the Mage Quarter in Stormwind or the Cleft of Shadow in Orgrimmar. As you find Phineas, a carriage will be waiting for you!
Denizens of Azeroth,
Do you thirst for power? Do you wish to change your circumstances, to become... more?
More free.
More respected.
More feared.
Do you wish to become a Warlock?
If your response to any of the above is "yes", then meet with my humble servant Phineas.
In temptation,
Madam Shadow
Phineas and his dark carriage will carry you in style to none other than the Darkmoon Faire, and we finally get to find out what happens there when the event is not active - It's a Warlock gathering! As Phineas greets you into the Darkmoon Faire after dark, he tells you what Madam Shadow wants - seemingly, to share the gift of dark magic to the world...
Phineas: Ah, you're finally awake.
Phineas: You dozed off for a while there, yes you did.
Phineas: Tired, are we? Burdened by the weight of the world? Phineas: My mistress bears no such burden. She is as free as the night and as constant as the moon.
Phineas: Her power is not a burden, but a gift she shares freely with others, yes. Yes!
Phineas: She has heard tell of your exploits, human. She would ask for your help in return for... gifts.
Initiate Gand yells: It! Won't! Stop!
Initiate Gand: AAAAHHHHHHHH!
Phineas: You're going to have your work cut out for you.
Madam Shadow: Step right up and feast your eyes, fel and fair, on the most potent cosmic wonders in existence!
Madam Shadow: Clever curses, devilish demons, and nefarious knickknacks unending!
As we introduce ourselves to Madam Shadow, she asks us to talk to new Warlock initiates scattered among the Faire, who seem to be seeking answers and a higher power. Some of these initiates include races that will be able to become Warlocks in Patch 10.1.5, such as Tauren, Pandaren, Night Elves and even a Lightforged Draenei!
As the Warlock initiates gather for their introductions, Madam Shadow asks you to store their souls into one of her own Soulstones, which seem to have a conspicuously different effect than an usual Warlock soulstone, having a fel tinge and leaving their targets disoriented.
One of the initiates, the Lightforged Draenei Oman, is hesitating a bit to willingly offer his soul, though. As we're asked to approach Oman, we can see him sitting by the docks, contemplating his choices. He does come up with a plan, as he's wary of Madam Shadow: Use our own Soulstone for him, and create a dummy soulstone by draining the life of one of the critters in the docks to deliver to Madam Shadow.
Ah, good to see you again, <race>.
> Madam Shadow requests your presence.
I am certain she does.
See that wreck out there? Mine are a people born of wreckage and ruin. The Xenedar on Argus. The Genedar on Draenor.
The Exodar on Azeroth.
And each time, the Light preserves us. Not all of us. Just a fraction.
Just enough to continue on.
But I wonder if there might be another way. Not in opposition to the Light, but alongside it. You asked me, earlier, why am I here.
This is my answer.
Because I survived the wreckage of my people, and I am determined to become stronger for it.
> I'm supposed to make you a soulstone.
And that you shall.
Do me a favor, <race>. As a friend in the making.
Create your soulstone, but cast it yourself. Not from some damp tome.
Madam Shadow gleefully falls for the dummy soulstone and asks for you to teach some basic curse spells to some of the Warlock recruits. As you teach the initiates new spells, you're suddenly summoned to the back of the faire by Oman, who states the obvious by saying something is clearly amiss - Madam Shadow plans on sending all the recruits to the Altar of Storms in the Burning Steppes to try their hand at summoning demons, but Oman believes the recruits aren't ready for such a place.
By spying on Madam Shadow by using your Eye of Kilrogg, you will learn the truth - Madam Shadow is actually a demon, trying new things to obtain more souls to do their bidding!
Madam Shadow: You have done well, Phineas.
Phineas: Yes mistress.
Madam Shadow: That fool <player> suspects nothing.
Phineas: Of course, mistress.
Madam Shadow: Soon the souls of four fledgling warlocks from across Azeroth...and beyond... will be mine to do with as I please. Ripped apart by howling demons...
Madam Shadow: ... I showed them how to summon demons, yes. But contain them?... Oopsie woopsie.
Madam Shadow: Then my revenge on the warlocks of this pitiful planet will be nearly complete.
Phineas: And the... gifts? Mistress?
Madam Shadow: Feckless human!
Madam Shadow: Your gift is death. Consider its swiftness a reward for loyal service.
Phineas: Misstre--nghah!
As you dismiss your Eye of Kilrogg, Oman is no longer at the Faire, but he did leave a Demonic Gateway to transport you to the Burning Steppes. As you step through the portal, you will come across a bloodbath - All recruits are dead, being devoured by demons... even Initiate Oman. You subjugate a demon, who tells us where "Madam Shadow" is - in the Blasted Lands. As you check on Oman's corpse, he uses your soulstone to revive himself, in shock that his plan actually worked!
Vengeful Subjugator: Hnngh.. no... no! Agh! He said they would melt beneath our claws... that he had prepared them...
Vengeful Subjugator: He awaits you near the other altar. Where the land runs from red, to green, to black...
Vengeful Subjugator: I will not... be... contained!
---
Initiate Oman: Hnngh... by the Light... my head! My eyes! They burn...
Initiate Oman: <Player>? You're here! Your soulstone... haha!
Initiate Oman: Hahaha!
Initiate Oman: My apologies. I think I'm in shock. Initiate Oman: We must get someplace safer...
As we go to the Blasted Lands to confront "Madam Shadow", we finally learn that he's actually Lord Banehollow, the dreadlord who used to lord over the Shadow Hold in Felwood, and served as the leader of the Jaedenar - and the Shadow Council in Azeroth.
Warlocks who played through Vanilla or Classic WoW may remember his name, as you had to fool him into selling Xorothian Stardust in the quest for your epic Dreadsteed mount. In Cataclysm, players actually ventured into the Shadow Hold to defeat him, but like all demons, his soul was sent to the Twisting Nether on defeat - And he is now reformed, seeking vengeance.
Madam Shadow: Ah, <Player>. I wasn't expecting you for some time.
Madam Shadow: It matters not. I assume you're here to avenge your proteges? How quaint.
Madam Shadow: I've stolen the souls of thousands of warlocks, and will continue to do so...
Madam Shadow: Until my revenge upon the spineless summoners of this turgid world is complete!
Lord Banehollow: You face Lord Banehollow!
As you defeat Lord Banehollow, the questline seemingly ends there, with Initiate Oman stating that he will contact you again after he recovers. Datamining shows that the next quest,
Prenez-en de la gangrène
, has you meet Oman in Booty Bay, and indeed if you go there, you will see some of the warlock recruits who survived Banehollow's shenanigans.
Madam Shadow's Initial Suspicions
Players might have caught on earlier in the questline that if Madam Shadow isn't a demon, she wasn't up to anything good with her entire plan. You can actually question her while still in the Darkmoon Faire, and if you push her enough, she actually tries to punish you - By porting you into the Darkmoon Deathmatch pit, where her elite Felhound
Pétillon
is awaiting to eat you! If you manage to defeat Twinkle, it will drop the
Grimoire du diablotin de gangregivre
, one of the new Imp customizations.
When ravens circle and donkeys bray...
When the sun is down at the end of day...
When trouble toils and bubbles' play...
Madam Shadow comes this way.
> That's nice. Where have all the people gone?
Hm? Ah, I couldn't say.
> Really.
Indeed.
> And the darkness?
It's night time.
> The demons?
Surely you're joking.
> I'm on to you.
No, you're not.
> Yes, I am.
I can assure you, I'm not.
> I'm not dropping this.
