Poisons. Confusing? Yes. Deadly? Yes. Vital? Heck yes.
This will serve as a rogue compendium for q's&a's about poisons, along with some late night napkin math as to which poison is better in which situation.
1. Intro
Thanks to patch 3.0, players no longer need to do the long and annoying chain of quests to be able to make poisons. unfortunately though, you cant even make your own poisons any more, they must be bought, or found, pre-made in junkboxes.
2. Overview
I dont think i need to list the poisons, now do I?
Oh well. just in case.
Anesthetic poison
Crippling Poison
Deadly Poison
Instant Poison
Mind-numbing
Wound Poison
They're pretty self explanatory in their purposes, so I won't go over that.
3. Basics
Poisons are a whole new monster. They now scale with attack power, making their contribution to your overall DPS much more significant.
The talent Precision now increases the chance to hit with Poisons, thus the total hit rating you need to reach the Poison cap is 315 (1with 5/5 IP, and 5/5 precision, it'll lower your poison hit cap by 15%, so .85 x 315= 268) (at 80).
4. In Battle: Wound or Instant?
Untalented, Wound Poison will always out perform over Instant Poison due to the increased application rate, and superior scaling.
Octaviann on the EJ forums posted this, and it rocks:
Wound Poison VII Damage (per attack)= .5*(231+.04*AP)=115.5+.02*AP
0/5 Improved Poisons Instant Poison IX Damage(per attack)= .2*(300+.1*AP)=60+.02*AP
1/5 IP Instant Poison IX Damage= .22*(300+.1*AP)=66+.022*AP
2/5 IP Instant Poison IX Damage= .24*(300+.1*AP)=72+.024*AP
3/5 IP Instant Poison IX Damage= .26*(300+.1*AP)=78+.026*AP
4/5 IP Instant Poison IX Damage= .28*(300+.1*AP)=84+.028*AP
5/5 IP Instant Poison IX Damage= .30*(300+.1*AP)=90+.03*AP
Setting one of the Instant Poison VIII expressions equal to the Wound Poison VII expressions and solving the resulting equation for AP gives the attack power needed for Instant Poison VIII to give equal poison damage per attack to Wound Poison VII. Any attack power above this value favors Instant Poison VIII, except where noted, and any value below this value favors Wound Poison.
No attack power will ever make Instant Poison VIII equal or exceed Wound Poison VII at any gear level; Wound Poison VII is always better without any points in Improved Poisons.
5. PVP
Kind of a no-brainer. Any combo of wound, crippling, and mind numbing works. Let us assume that MH is 1.8 speed, and OH is 1.4. If wound and cripp are chosen, do wound OH and cripp main. If wound and mind numb.are chosen, wound OH, mind numb MH. If cripp and mind numb are chosen, your not that smart...
6. PVE
Obvious choices are obvious. Any decent rogue will not have to rely on anesthetic poison to lower threat. So, choose instant, and wound. I havn't the time atm to do the math, ill edit this tomorrow. but for pve, you'll want to go wound MH, and instant OH. gnight yall.
not quite finished, so meh.
