If you would've asked one of the many NPC's in Dalaran, they would've explained why there is no AH.

The Dalaran Mages are apparently more scholarly-minded, and resent the idea of AH-style commerce in their city.
(Blizzard wanted a way to force endgame characters back to old-world Azeroth, and this is it. Or else, Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms would be full of ghost-town cities. And the lag in Dalaran would be far, far worse than it is today)
Personally? I think it wouldn't hurt for Blizzard to put a
Neutral Auction House
in Dalaran. Why not?

How do people find threads this old to necro as their first post?

Onijitsu
Meh. If people start a new thread, they get cursed at for not doing a search. If they do a search, then they get criticized for "necroing".
Which would you rather people do? On general principles, you're prolly criticizing the wrong practice.

If the topic for the old thread is now outdated - create a new one.
If the topic is still viable and can be discussed without repeating itself - post in the old one.

This.
His question was answered long ago and I'm quite sure that he no longer checks this thread due to the fact that he last visited in 2009.
