With World of Warcraft Chronicle Volume 3 released today, we're highlighting interesting lore additions. Earlier today we detailed the
updates to Old Gods
and now we are highlighting how most dungeon and raids are canonically associated with
one
faction now. For example, the Alliance are credited with original Naxxramas, while the Horde clear Blackwing Lair.
While players have fond memories of defeating major bosses in-game, it's now canon that some of these dungeons and raids were defeated primarily by one faction. While this makes sense on a narrative level, it's still a bit of a shock to suddenly have a cherished boss kill be attributed to another faction. Still, splitting forces to attack different locations does explain how multiple dungeons and raids were able to fall in a relatively short time period. There's a similar post up on

with lively discussion if you want to read more community thoughts.

Classic
Profundidades de Roca Negra
: The Alliance tried to "save" Moira after her kidnapping by the Dark Iron dwarves, but she refuses to join them.
Núcleo de Magma
- Both, led by Hydraxian Waterlords. Moira les out word that the Dark Iron Dwarves were forced to create a massive army for the Firelord. She also revealed that there were immense riches in the mountain, hoping that adventurous followers would assist her. She doesn't even mind if she has adventurers acting out of greed, which reminds us of players interested in a raid simply for loot who know little about the story! After Ragnaros died, Moira's popularity skyrocketed as she gained the loyalty of many dwarves grateful for their freedom.
Maraudon
: The Horde, with the assistance of the Magram centaurs, ended the spreading corruption in Desolace and bloodlust among the centaurs.
La Masacre
: The Horde initially planned on scouring the Gordunni from Dire Maul, but also faced the Shen'dralar, a group of elves feeding off the demonic energy of Immol'thar.
Cumbre de Roca Negra
: Moira once again sent out word about the happenings in Blackrock Mountain. She made sure the news that Dal'rend's Horde had joined the Black Dragonflight made its way to Orgrimmar.
Guarida de Alanegra
: After the Horde overthrew Dal'rend, Nefarian retaliated but the Horde was victorious. Moira was concerned about Nefarian's motives to revitalize the Black Dragonflight. With Nefarian defeated, Azeroth thought the threat of the Black Dragonflight had been erased.
Cuevas de los Lamentos
: The Horde rescued the druids trapped in the Wailing Caverns and cleanse the corruption.
Templo Sumergido
: The Alliance, answering the call of the Cenarion Circle, killed the Atal'ai adherents and tragically many green dragons driven mad by the corruption of the Nightmare.
Zul'Gurub
: The Zandalari Trolls asked the Darkspear to convince the Horde to help them prevent the Atal'ai from summoning the Blood God Hakkar. While they did not stop Hakkar from being summoned, the Horde heroes poisoned themselves, which led to the defeat of Hakkar.
Thrall and Bolvar decide to work together to eradicate the threat of C'Thun. Varok Saurfang leads the
Ahn'Qiraj War Campaign
, and after the gates open, he organized a two-pronged attack. The Horde defeat
Ruinas de Ahn'Qiraj
, the location of many qiraji, while the Alliance defeat
Ahn'Qiraj
, an exceptionally dangerous mission.
Naxxramas
: The Alliance, led by the Argent Dawn and Bolvar Fordragon, end the Scourge's invasion. They do not destroy Naxxramas and Kel'Thuzad, but weaken it enough for a retreat.
Burning Crusade
Las Salas Arrasadas
: Defeating this dungeon was personal for the Horde, as the demonic orcs reminded the Horde of their past corruption.
Guarida de Magtheridon
: The Horde continued with their invasion of Hellfire Citadel, defeating the pit lord.
Caverna Santuario Serpiente
: The Alliance, led by the Draenei eager to reconnect with their relatives in Zangarmarsh, came to Telredor and learned about the troubles caused by Lady Vashj draining the zone. They appear to be credited with defeating all dungeon and raid bosses in this zone, as well as liberating the enslaved Broken.
El Castillo de la Tempestad
: The Horde lead the attack against Kael'thas, the former ruler of the Blood Elves. Initially loyal to Illidan, Kil'jaeden had lured Kael'thas away with the promise of learning more about fel magic. When the Horde found him in Tempest Keep, Kael'thas is consumed by fel magic and simply a pawn of the Legion.
Templo Oscuro
- Both the Alliance and Horde, along with the forces of Shattrath City, Maiev, and Akama, assaulted the Black Temple. This took place while Illidan's Demon Hunters are on Mardum, which is part of the Demon Hunter Starting Zone experience. Also, in his final moments we learn that Illidan thinks of Maiev, while in-game, he has a vision of Tyrande.
Zul'Aman
: The Amani launched attacks on the Blood Elves, as most of Quel'Thalas's soldiers were busy on Outland. The Horde led an elite strike to defeat Zul'jin before the Amani attacks seriously began.
Both the Alliance and Horde fight on Quel'Danas. The Horde defeated
Bancal del Magister
, in which they faced Kael'Thas a second time. He'd survived the assault on Tempest Keep, capturing M'uru and Anveena to repower the Sunwell to serve as a gateway for Kil'jaeden. The Alliance infiltrated
Meseta de La Fuente del Sol
, driving Kil'jaeden back through his portal after the heroic sacrifice of Anveena. Velen then used the heart of M'uru to cleanse the Sunwell, transforming it into a font of holy magic which Lady Liadrin and the Blood Knights embraced.
We also learn some details which transition the story from Burning Crusade to Wrath:
Cho'gall loosened the prison bonds of Yogg-Saron during The Burning Crusade.
Malygos, attacked by the Nether Dragons, devoted himself to magic. He decided he must remove access to arcane magic to mortals.
Archbishop Benedictus, the leader of the Church of Holy Light, joined the Twilight Hammer. This sets up events in Cataclysm.
Onyxia
: Varian, his personality split in half, returned to Stormwind as the Warrior spirit Lo'Gosh. He didn't recognize anyone or even remember his true identity, and his friends were also unable to recognize him due to a cloud of dark magic. However, Jaina Proudmoore sensed he was a familiar figure, and together with the help of Aegwynn, they revealed his identity. Lady Katrana Prestor then kidnaps Anduin and flees to Dustwallow Marsh, and Varian, still split between two personalities, is motivated by his love for Anduin on both sides to defeat Onyxia. Varian's split identity is made whole once again, although hecontinues to struggle with keeping his warrior spirit in check.
Wrath
In Wrath of the Lich King, the Horde and Alliance are united through neutral forces like the Kirin Tor, Argent Crusade, and Explorer's League, splitting credit for many dungeon and raid bosses. It's also interesting to see how the canon order differs from the in-game release schedule. Halls of Stone and Lightning were available at Wrath's launch, but were only defeated in canon after the early raids.
The Alliance, led by Bolvar Fordragon, initially start the invasion of Northrend on
Fiordo Aquilonal
and later ally with the Frostborn dwarves. The Horde, led by Garrosh Hellscream, start the invasion of Northrend in
Tundra Boreal
and later ally with the Taunka.
Naxxramas
: This time around, Naxxramas is defeated by members of both the Alliance and the Horde and Kel'Thuzad's soul was lost in the Shadowlands.
El Ojo de la Eternidad
: After the Kirin Tor learns that Malygos is draining away Azeroth's arcane magic, they call upon both the Alliance and Horde for help. Both factions are initially hesitant as this battle would divert resources from the war against the Lich King, but eventually the Alliance, Horde, and Wyrmrest Accord defeat Malygos.
Bolvar Fordragon and Dranosh Saurfang work together at the Wrathgate, and are on the verge of achieving victory against the Lich King when Putress rained down lethal pleague onto the battlefield. Over 5000 Alliance soldiers and 4000 Horde soldiers were lost. In the subsequent Battle for the Undercity, the Horde take out Varimathras, while the Alliance take out Putress. Varian is about to declare war on Thrall when Jaina teleports the Alliance out.
Cámaras de Piedra
: The Alliance escorts Brann Bronzebeard into the Halls of Stone, defeating Sjonnir and ending mass-production of Yogg-Saron's iron army via the Forge of Wills.
Cámaras de Relámpagos
: The Horde defeat the fallen champion Loken, who reveals that his death will herald the end of Azeroth.
Ulduar
: Both the Alliance and Horde put aside their differences and join forces to adventure into Ulduar, led by the Explorer's League and Kirin Tor. While they were victorious against Yogg-Saron, Brann discovered that Loken's death triggered a fail-safe mechanism to eradicate Azeroth. Algalon was summoned to Ulduar, and completed his analysis, determining that the fail-safe protocol must continue and the Forge of Origination activated. In spite of this grim news, the heroes fought on and Algalon was ultimately moved by their resolve, allowing them to reverse the fail-safe protocol.
Prueba del Cruzado
: Concerned that a large army against the Lich King would result in many casualties and minions for the Lich King, Tirion Fordring decides that a small elite squad must infiltrate Icecrown Citadel. The Argent Tournament is a competition designed to pick the best possible champions for this job.
Ciudadela de la Corona de Hielo
: The assault on Icecrown Citadel, led by the champions of Azeroth, Argent Crusade, and Knights of the Ebon Blade, was successful with a heavy price. Without a Lich King to control them, the Scourge would run rampant across the world. Bolvar Fordragon, tortured by the Lich King, could never rejoin the world of the living and so decided to become the next Lich King. The Horde leaders also faced a rough aftermath--Saurfang retreated from leadership to mourn the death of his son while Sylvanas tried to commit suicide, flinging herself off Icecrown Citadel and brought back to life through a partnership with the Val'kyr.
Cataclysm
Trono de los Cuatro Vientos
: Both the Alliance and the Horde, led by the Earthen Ring, take down Al'Akir.
Grim Batol
: The Alliance, assisted by the Red Dragonflight, freed Grim Batol from the Twilight Hammer.
El Bastión del Crepúsculo
: The Horde, assisted by the legendary assassin Garona, struck at the Twilight Hammer's seat of power, Bastion of Twilight, and defeated their leader Cho'gall.
Zul'Aman
and
Zul'Gurub
: Vol'jin united the Alliance and Horde to end the Zandalari's warmongering plans.
Tierras de Fuego
: Both forces, led by the Cenarion Circle, carved out a stronghold known as the Molten Front and defeated Ragnaros the Firelord.
Fin de los Días
: The Horde help Nozdormu defeat the infinite dragonflight, including a twisted version of himself--Murozond. Freeing the timeways allowed Nozdormu to acquire the Dragon Soul artifact.
Pozo de la Eternidad
: The Alliance help Nozdormu retrieve the Dragon Soul from the past. This allowed the Dragon Aspects to infuse the artifact with their combined powers at Wyrmrest Temple.
Alma de Dragón
: The Alliance, Horde, and dragonflights rallied together to defeat Deathwing, infused with the power of N'Zoth. The Dragon Aspects sacrificed their energy to empower the Dragon Soul, and so passed on the responsibility of protecting Azeroth to the Alliance and Horde. However, the old wounds between the factions continued to fester, and instead of turning to peace, the factions turn on each other.
What do you think of the breakdown between the factions? Personally I liked knowing the backstory behind Molten Core, especially that Moira didn't care if the adventurers only cared about the riches, as long as they helped fight Ragnaros.
