Part of Dragonflight's main questline takes us through various timelines as we chase after Chromie and an Infinite Dragon, until we finally catch up with them for the last time in Ny'alotha. While we're there, Old Gods whisper to us, with many of the whispers being familiar - but N'zoth's whispers are new.
In the Dragonflight storyline Big Time Adventurer, we chase Chromie and the Infinite Dragon Eternus through important moments in Azeroth's history, finally reaching Ny'alotha, the Sleeping City, during the time of the Black Empire, when the Old Gods ruled Azeroth. For as long as we're in Ny'alotha, we hear Old God whispers - many of which are nothing new, we've heard them before.
Upon entering Ny'alotha, we will begin to hear whispers from an Observing, Piercing, and Maddening Presence. The Observing Presence is clearly C'Thun, whispering lines we already recognize from the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. The Piercing Presence is Y'Shaarj, with whispers from Siege of Orgrimmar. Finally, the Maddening Presence is Yogg-Saron, with whispers from Ahn'kahet: The Old Kingdom.
Observing Presence whispers:
You will die.
You will betray your friends.
Your friends will abandon you.
Your courage will fail.
Piercing Presence whispers:
You cannot succeed. Your cause is hopeless.
No one is coming to save you.
You have already lost.
All of your friends are dead.
Your allies will leave you behind.
Maddening Presence whispers:
Hope is an illusion.
All that you know will fade.
You will be alone in the end.
Trust is your weakness.
All this is pretty standard, until new whispers from a forth presence begins. These do not start until you start journeying through Ny'alotha, and a Knowing Presence - N'zoth - begins to whisper as well. And these are whispers we've never heard before.
During testing, we were able to get these specific whispers while on the quest
Tiempo de Cromi
and running across to Chromie and Eturnus, with the "I know you" whisper almost always triggering first.
Knowing Presence whispers:
I... know you. What you were. What you will yet be.
You will follow him to the deep places. The dark waters will flow in his wake.
The next few whispers were phrases we were only able to trigger during the next quest,
Tiempo de Cromi
, where we hold off attackers while your dragon companions work at getting you back to present time. These whispers are even more intriguing.
Knowing Presence whispers:
With many eyes, they will see again. They will drink, and be uplifted.
Deeper, deeper its roots will reach. Welcoming our embrace.
Her dreams sing beneath the surface. Our dreams. Our song.
Once again, we found the lines seem to trigger in order at at specific points, with the first line coming after the friendly dialogue that begins on accepting the quest, and the second and third lines only triggering at around 70%, right after Chromie encouraging you that there's only a "little bit more".
These whipsers have a few interesting implications. First, N'zoth recognizing us for what we "were", but also what we "will yet be". This implies we will have dealings with N'zoth in the future.
Second, "You will follow him to the deep places.". There has already been some speculation that
we will head underground in patch 10.1
. Who will lead us there?
Third, the "many eyes" puts us in mind of the "seven-eyed goat" mentioned by the
Caja de puzles de Yogg-Saron
. Y'Shaarj is known as the God of Seven Heads, and the Hearthstone artwork of them depicts them with seven eyes and goat horns. Will Y'Shaarj reawaken at some point?
"Deeper, deeper its roots will reach. Welcoming our embrace" sounds a whole lot like a new World Tree, which we already know has been
planted in the Emerald Dream
.
Finally, "Her dreams sing beneath the surface. Our dreams. Our song." This sounds like Azeroth herself, with the claim that the Old Gods have already corrupted her.
While it's been established that the Primal Incarnates are the biggest threat right now, we can't help but feel more and more like the threat of the Old Gods is growing.
