Feedback and Opinions on the current state of Guardian Druid in the Shadowlands Beta including discussion about the Covenant Abilities, Legendaries, Conduits, new spells and more!
Introduction
Hello! I'm Pumps, writer for the Guardian Druid guides for Wowhead! I'm here to discuss how strong Guardian druids are feeling and performing in the Shadowlands Beta, and what this means for the us heading into Shadowlands.
I'll start by saying that Guardian Druids are feeling quite powerful. They have had a few nice changes and the playstyle is still very similar to BFA and Legion.
This post focuses on feedback and opinions on the current state of Guardian Druids in the Shadowlands Beta, mainly focusing on PvE viability, Covenant Abilities, Legendaries, Conduits, and general concerns and hopes for the spec going forward. Please keep in mind that these opinions are subject to change, as we are still in Beta, we have had limited end game testing.

What's New for Guardian Druids?
With the Shadowlands changes, we see 2 old talents, and 2 old spells returning to us in the unpruning.
Ciclón
- The return of cyclone for Guardian will have a great impact on PvP, but we are very unlikely to see any use of this in M+ and Raids, unless it is changed to be able to be cast in Bear Form.
Rabia
- A powerful new returning spell, but it now has the added bonus of reducing the cooldown on
Regeneración frenética
by 75% and the rage cost of
Pelaje férreo
by 50%, which will make us extremely tanky while this is up. This is a great addition to our toolkit.
Renovación
- This will likely see some use on fights where mobility is less of a priority. It provides some bonus healing, but it would be much nicer if this was not on the same talent row as
Carga salvaje
, which is our go to talent still.
Corazón de lo Salvaje
- This iteration of Heart of the Wild buffs your chosen Affinity by 30% while it's up, and could see great use in raid as some bonus utility, but would be quite hard to use in a M+ setting.
Changes to Existing Guardian Druid Spells
Encarnación: Guardián de Ursoc
- This talent received quite a large buff, reducing the cooldown on
Regeneración frenética
by 75%, the rage cost of
Pelaje férreo
by 50% and gaining 30% increased maximum health while its active. This is now our best defensive ability by quite a lot. This lets us put out a ton of healing and mitigate almost all physical damage at the same time. What would make this ability absolutely fantastic is the removal of the GCD cost for
Regeneración frenética
, as spending several GCDs on that feels very bad. Hopefully this change comes in the future.
Piel de corteza
- The cooldown on Barkskin has been reduced down to 60 Seconds (40 seconds with
Supervivencia del más fuerte
). The uptime overall on Barkskin is going to be much higher now compared to BFA and has added synergy with one of our legendary Runecarves -
La voluntad del orden natural
. This will be a strong combination when fixed - it is currently bugged - Ironfur and Frenzied Regeneration are not proccing at the end of the Barkskin.
Regeneración frenética
- Frenzied Regeneration now increases our healing taken by 20% while it is active, but only heals for 24% of our HP, down from 32%. This spell needs a buff in my opinion. The main buff definitely needs a buff in the form of GCD removal, allowing our rotation to flow more fluidly as it did in Legion, and possibly a buff for a lower cooldown or more charges, or higher healing output.
Rugido incapacitante
- Now shifts you into Bear Form when you use it, so no more bird form disorienting to loot and fly away.
Alivio presto
- Swiftmends cooldown has reduced to 15 seconds, but now requires a HoT to be consumed on the target. This is a large nerf to our ability to shift out and quickly save ourselves or a party or raid members life with a large instant heal. The extra GCD required to cast
Rejuvenecimiento
and then Swiftmend will likely result in a lot more deaths. Definitely a significant nerf from the BFA version.
Pulverizar
- This has been changed to a 30 second cooldown which grants 20% damage reduction for 10 seconds. We are very likely to see at least some use of this in raids now, as it is a much better version than the BFA iteration. 14% more damage reduction over
Desgarrar y rasgar
for predictable, hard hitting raid mechanics is not negligible, but it is still consuming 2 Thrash stacks and doing about the same damage as two mangles. This will make it a significant DPS loss, and unlikely to be our go-to talent in this row still.
Instintos de supervivencia
- Survival Instincts cooldown has been reduced to 3 minutes from 4 minutes. It still 2 charges, and is a welcomed buff to our shield wall.
Overall, we didn't get many positive changes to spells or talents and could definitely use some love in that department from Blizzard, Incarnation/Berserk being the only redeeming change. I would love to see things like
Carga salvaje
,
Zarzas
and
Guardián galáctico
added to our base toolkit, and allowing the talent tree to open up to some new and interesting talents, making the rotation flow more organically. Several other classes have received this good talent into base toolkit treatment in Shadowlands and have flourished because of it, and I believe we could greatly benefit from this as well.
Guardian Druid Talents Overview and Changes
Firstly, we see some new "old" talents in the tree with the return of
Renovación
and
Corazón de lo Salvaje
. In addition, all of the Affinities now have a new main spell attached to them:
Balance =
Tifón
Feral =
Amputar
Resto =
Vórtice de Ursol
This means we will no longer have access to the classic Ursol's Vortex > Typhoon combo that has been common place for a few expansions now.
Renovación
- Renewal is a rather uninteresting one, as it is a small heal on a rather long cooldown. It did not get much use in previous iterations, and as long as it's on the same talent row as Wild Charge I expect it will be very much the same scenario.
Corazón de lo Salvaje
- Heart of the Wild is an interesting one! Catweaving? Owlweaving? Some massive group saving Offheals? There is potential for this talent, and it's on a row with very little competition, making it an excellent choice for most content. Perhaps making this also buff your Guardian Affinity could be a good way to make it a more viable talent in M+.
Overall, we did not receive too many talent tree changes, and this is one aspect we could really benefit from. A talent shuffle would allow us more choices and combinations in the future, especially for talents like
Zarzas
being in the rage generation row, a new rage generating talent would be huge.
Covenant Abilities for Guardian Druids
Night Fae
Convocar a los espíritus
- This has to be my favorite Covenant choice for us overall as it has great use in all content. Convoke the Spirits casts 16 random spells in 4 seconds, usually putting up both our HoTs -
Rejuvenecimiento
and
Recrecimiento
- on ourselves, as well as several stacks of
Pelaje férreo
. This makes it very powerful defensively. The rest of the spells are generally filled with Thrashes, Swipes, Mangles, Rake, Wraths, and a small chance to cast Pulverize.
Forma de alma
- Soulshape is a bit disappointing for Guardian Druids because you shift out of form when you use it, potentially leading to us being killed. When you shift back into bear, it cancels the effect entirely. It would be a great change if this did not shapeshift us out of Bear Form, allowing us to get the full utility of this spell.
Necrolord
Enjambre adaptable
- Necrolord is my second choice for Covenants. I am a huge fan of how Adaptive Swarm feels in our rotation, and since we have plenty of periodic effects, buffing them by 20% is quite a large DPS increase. I can definitely see this being our highest DPS or best single target raid Covenant. The small amount of healing that this ability gives us is also pretty nice.
Modelar carne
- The base Necrolord ability is
Modelar carne
, which is quite a large absorb. This ability is very useful for tanks due to the absorb being based on maximum health. The channel to increase the shield is an interesting addition, and I wonder where we'll see use of this in raid situations.
Venthyr
Frenesí voraz
- This has exceptionally strong synergy when used in combination with one of our Legendary Runecarves -
Legado del durmiente
. Ravenous Frenzy can be quite scary, even deadly, for us to use because if you idle or get CC'd at all for only 1.5 seconds, you can take up to
45%
of your health as damage. But wiith the Legendary, you cannot be crowd controlled at all, making sure you get full value of this covenant ability and removing the spook factor. Currently, this Runecarve is not working with
Encarnación: Guardián de Ursoc
, which replaces Berserk. When this is fixed, this combination will be extremely powerful in M+ content and likely our strongest M+ build.
Puerta de las Sombras
- Door of Shadows is my favorite generic covenant ability, allowing you to blink anywhere on a pretty short cooldown. More mobility is a big plus from me!
Kyrian
Almas gemelas
- Kindred Spirits is quite a strong choice overall, although circumstantial. I believe this could have incredible use in a raid and M+ environment. This Covenant ability is likely the weakest of the four, but the base Kyrian ability below is very strong in the right scenarios. The bond damage reduction to your tank partner will be very powerful in Raids.
Invocar al administrador
- Summons a cute little Owlette that allows us to cleanse off negative effects, and gives us an extra Healthstone/Health Potion type of on-use effect. There are lots of different things this little owl can do, which you can read more about
here
.
Tough choices are ahead for all Guardian Druids trying to pick a covenant to stick to. I believe each Covenant will have different values depending on the content you are doing. In my opinion, Night Fae or Venthyr will be the M+ choices, while Necrolord and Kyrian are the raid choices. I am hopeful that changing Covenants will not be too hard, allowing us to be as powerful as we can possibly be in all content. Currently, my pick would be Night Fae as i believe it has the most flexibility in all content.
Guardian Druid Soulbind Conduits
Conduits so far for Guardian have been extremely mediocre, and it would be a huge deal for us if some of these got changed/buffed in the future. Especially the Maul one...
Covenant Traits
All covenant traits are quite powerful and will almost be guaranteed to be in one of our conduit slots all the time.
Confluencia de elementos
- 12% Increased Damage and Healing while channeling the Night Fae ability
Convocar a los espíritus
.
Enjambre evolucionado
- 6% Increased period effects on targets affected by
Enjambre adaptable
.
Sed infinita
- 2% Increased Crit chance per stack of
Frenesí voraz
, on average we get to around 15-16 stacks of this.
Lealtad extrema
- 10% Reduced cooldown on the Kyrian ability
Almas gemelas
.
Potency, Endurance and Finesse Traits
Agresividad descontrolada
- 10% Haste During Berserk, and hopefully Incarnation, is pretty good and definitely our highest DPS Conduit so far.
Combatiente salvaje
- This one is not very good. Let's just get Maul off the GCD... can that be a conduit?
Instintos bien afinados
- One Frenzied Regeneration below 25% every 90 seconds seems a bit sad and this is unlikely to get any use.
Crin a capas
- 8% chance to gain 2 stacks of Ironfur instead of 1. This is a good one, as you can never have too much fur!
Duro como la corteza
- 10% cooldown off Barkskin - so 6s - or 4s with Survival of the Fittest. This is also a very good one, especially if you are planning on crafting the Barkskin legendary,
La voluntad del orden natural
. Fantastic synergy.
Vigor osuno
- This one could help out in M+ as our weakest point is the start of the pull. With no rage and a large health and armor increase, this would be a solid buffer.
Resolución innata
- 12% more Frenzied Regeneration is always welcomed although this is very little and could use a significant buff as 12% equates to roughly 3% more total HP each frenzy. Not significant enough to warrant a conduit slot.
Liderando la manada
- Buff to our raid utility is always a good plus.
Nacido de lo salvaje
- The main factor on this one is the reductions of the Heart of the Wild cooldown by 10%. This could be quite large if Heart of the Wild becomes a large DPS or Healing cooldown we use often.
I'm hoping we get a little more conduit changes in the future, as I know myself and the Guardian Druid community were rather let down with the release of these current ones, especially after the hype of some great and interesting legendaries.
Guardian Druid Legendaries
Now we are getting to the good stuff -
LEGENDARIES
! I am very glad they are back after having no cool legendaries in BFA. I have missed them sorely and our legendaries are excellent, and have lots of potential for cool builds and fun stuff in the future, especially if we can ever equip 2 at the same time.
General Druid Legendary Powers
Atisbo fugaz de Lycara
- This is actually one of my favorite ones for bear right now, due to the massive power of
Lluvia de estrellas
, we can take
Afinidad con Equilibrio
and shift into Boomkin Form every 45s to proc a huge Starfall, then shift back into bear and let it go to town. This can do up to 40% of our damage overall, which is very strong, and a bit of a playstyle difference that we haven't seen before. Outside of Starfall shenanigans, the legendary itself is quite nice for even more Barkskin uptime.
Juramento del druida anciano
- Similar to the Legion legendary chest
Ekowraith, Creador de Mundos
, with the added bonus of getting Heart of the Wild for 10 seconds every 1 minute, this is bound to be a solid all round legendary. Buffing our
Pellejo grueso
by 75% passively and defensively our
Don de Ysera
this will be a good tanking choice, simple and strong.
El ciclo de vida y muerte
- Decent buff to our DoTs and has good synergy with the Necrolord Covenant ability
Enjambre adaptable
.
Jarabe de enfoque profundo
- Possibly a very powerful Catweaving legendary in combination with
Corazón de lo Salvaje
. As it does not include Thrash it's unlikely we will use this outside of Catweaving.
Guardian Druid Specific Legendary Powers
Abrazo imbuido de esponja vegetal
- A combination of two of the best Legion legendaries
Encierro eterno de Elize
and
Envolturas de esponja vegetal
. Without a powerful Thrash conduit this will likely be out shined by other legendaries due to the now mediocre damage of Thrash, compared it's Legion iteration.
La voluntad del orden natural
- An extremely powerful defensive legendary, although currently bugged on the Beta and not gaining the Ironfur or Frenzied Regeneration when Barskin ends, when this gets fixed this will be very strong in combination with
Supervivencia del más fuerte
and
Duro como la corteza
.
Furia de Ursoc recordada
- Inspired by the amazing Legion Artifact trait with the best name,
Pronóstico vapuleador
.
This falls into a similar category as the other Thrash legendary, as potentially being out shined by others due to the average state of Thrash now, although this does have some mild synergy with Night Fae's Covenant ability,
Convocar a los espíritus
and
Celador de la tierra
.
Legado del durmiente
- Another powerful Legion Artifact trait makes a return with
Abrazo de la Pesadilla
. This one is also currently bugged not working with
Encarnación: Guardián de Ursoc
which replaces Berserk. When this bug gets fixed this will almost definitely be one of if not the best M+ legendary choice especially if you choose the Venthyr covenant. You will become an absolute unstoppable bear machine for 30 seconds every 3 minutes.
Overall, we have some cool and interesting legendary choices. The choice will be another tough one to make, as to what will end up being the best. Just like Covenants, this will almost definitely depend on the type of content you are doing primarily, with my top 3 being
Atisbo fugaz de Lycara
,
Legado del durmiente
and
La voluntad del orden natural
.
General Concerns
My general concerns for Guardian is that we have not gained much in Shadowlands, and it does not truly feel like an expansion from my point of view. We are just BFA Guardian Druids, but weaker, after losing the Heart of Azeroth and Azerite. BFA Guardian was just Legion Guardian but weaker again, so we are two expansions past Legion, but still living on that patch 7.1 hype train and that exact same rotation. Nothing has changed for two expansions and we could use some love, the rotation could be changed to feel fresher, newer, and less clunky.
Frenzied Regeneration being on the GCD is the single worst change i've experienced, having played Guardian since MoP. Please remove Frenzied Regeneration off the GCD!
What I think we could use, is for some of our talents that we pick majority of the time, or talents that make our rotation flow, be better get integrated into our base toolkit. Abilities like
Zarzas
,
Carga salvaje
and
Guardián galáctico
, or bringing back more utility like
Estimular
.
Comparably, a Warrior doesn't have to take up an entire talent row just to spec into Charge. It is time these things become baseline, because those talent rows have become quite dusty, untouched and boring for far too long. Even smaller things like being able to keep the Bear form passive while mounted would be a massive boost to our M+ representation, and overall balance. Quality of life improvements for Guardian would be incredibly welcomed and appreciated.
Hopes for the Future of Guardian Druid
A lot of what makes a spec get positive attention is public opinion, especially in the world first raiding scene.
For example, although Guardian was perfectly capable in the current tier (Ny'alotha), it was not the best in any one aspect and brought nothing unique, so majority of people chose to play Brewmaster Monk or Blood Death Knight due to the amount of top end raiders singing the praises of these specs, if lots of people see the top players playing a spec and dominating on it e.g, doing huge numbers and impressive stuff, as was the case with Guardian in Legion, then the community perception of that spec will go up.
For Bears to reach this level again we need to be given something that makes us special or unique, something that makes us the best in at least 1 aspect of the game, even though Brewmaster may not have been the "best" tank in many ways this tier it did still bring the mighty 5% Physical Debuff which caused it to get a ton of raid representation.
I think to truly ascend the Guardian spec to the point where it is chosen among the best of the best, we need something completely unique and important, a raid buff such as
or utility in the form of possibly a powerful healing cooldown like
Tranquilidad
would go very far in solidifying our spot back on the top of the tanks.
Alternatively we would have to be buffed to the point of being considered one of the best tanks with just our base toolkit, this could easily be achieved with several changes to
Regeneración frenética
, a rework of this spell would be fantastic, i envision something similar to Protection Warrior's
Ignorar dolor
except pure healing instead of absorbs, potentially with an added druid talent similar to
Control de inquina
, where our goal is to actively generate and consume as much Rage as possible to reduce our cooldowns consistently while giving us a constant source of healing, older iterations of Frenzied Regeneration had no cooldown and worked in this fashion of consuming rage to heal ourselves, and i believe the return to that version of Guardian would be amazing.
The main weakness of Guardian currently is having no active mitigation against magic damage and feeling like you have nothing left to press when both of your Frenzied Regens are on cooldown, changing Frenzied Regen to a no cooldown pure rage cost to health conversion would solve both issues.
This would also allow for new talents in the tree to be rage generating talents and we could possibly expand our rage bar to a new cap maybe 2-300 rage instead of 100.
In my opinion any or all of these changes would make Guardian a more enjoyable and powerful spec and would greatly increase the odds of seeing Guardian druids back in the world first raid race and on the M+ Leader boards in Shadowlands.
Bugs
The main bugs for Guardian druid would be
Encarnación: Guardián de Ursoc
being considered the same as
Rabia
. It replaces Berserk, and a lot of things meant to work for Berserk do not work for Incarn and without this being fixed, this will become another dead talent.
La voluntad del orden natural
- Not gaining the Ironfur or Frenzied Regen when Barkskin ends.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although Bears can definitely use some quality of life changes and some rotation/talent changes, we are still feeling quite sturdy as a tank. We may not be the single best M+ or raid tank, but we are more than strong enough to get through the content at the highest levels of the game.
If Guardian is something you love to play I suggest you continue playing Bear into Shadowlands as you will have no issues thrashing through all aspects of the game.
I am hopeful that we will receive some more balancing changes, as there is much more to come to the Shadowlands Beta but only time will tell what's in store for the Bear Gang. Keep on Thrashing!
