Runes in Diablo Immortal are small objects that are used to create Legendary Gems. By acquiring Runes and combining them with Platinum at the Apprentice Jeweler, you can create most 1-Star and 2-Star Legendary gems. There's even a Mystery Legendary Gem recipe where you have a chance to create an elusive 5-Star Legendary!
This makes Runes in Diablo Immortal different than Runes from either Diablo II or Diablo III. In Diablo II, Runes were socketed into Normal-quality armor to create powerful Runewords. In Diablo III, Runes were modifiers to base abilities. In Diablo Immortal, Runes are more akin to a crafting material or currency.
About Runes in Diablo Immortal
Runes are a crafting material used to create Legendary Gems at the Apprentice Jeweler. Runes fall into two categories, Common and Uncommon.
Common Runes used as crafting materials for both 1-Star and 2-Star Legendary gems.
Uncommon Runes used exclusively to create 2-Star Legendary gems.
One rune,
, is used in every crafting recipe for Legendary Gems. 7 are needed to create all 1-Star Legendary recipes, and 28 are needed in every 2-star Legendary recipe.
Another rune,
, is not used in the manufacture of any specific Legendary Gem. Its sole application is to one of the Mystery Legendary Gem recipes known by the Apprentice Jeweler. The Mystery Legendary Gem recipe can create
any
random Legendary Gem, including (very rarely) 5-Star gems which are normally only acquired through drops.

Special Runes Runes - ATI and FA
Unlike other runes, and have two very distinct purposes, instead of being the ingredient for a single Legendary Gem. In addition to being dropped, you can trade other Runes you don't want to get more of these important runes.

Used to craft special recipes available from the Apprentice Jeweler:
- needs 7 - can make any random 1-Star gem
- needs 28 - can make any random 2-Star gem
- needs 22 - can make a 1-Star, 2-Star, or 5-Star random gem

All 1-Star Legendary Gem recipes require 2 specific Magic Runes and 7 .

How to Get Runes in Diablo Immortal
Runes come primarily from two sources:
Running Elder Rifts empowered with at least one
Running Challenge Rifts
Your most reliable source of Runes comes from Elder Rifts. With at least one applied, you are guaranteed Rune rewards from Elder Rifts, which may include both Common and Uncommon runes. You will only get guaranteed Runes if you use your own to empower the Rift; another player using a will not affect your ability to earn Runes.
Challenge Rifts regularly reward Runes for a first completion of a new difficulty level.

Trading Runes for ATI
The Fading Embers and Runes vendor will allow you to trade unwanted Magic Runes or unwanted Rare Runes for runes. This vendor can be found near the Elder Rift portal. You can hand in unwanted Runes of the same type in any combination.
The cost to trade Runes is as follows:
12x Magic Runes plus 15x s per
3x Rare Runes plus s per
