Redditor
fairafar
has recreated a small part of
Gilneas inside Unreal Engine 4
, but unlike other recreations which attempt to reconstruct the city on a grand scale showing off every bit of detail, this reimagining is a close view, 3rd person action RPG focused on visceral combat rather than environmental art.
Edit: Unfortunately the reddit post and Youtube videos appear to have been deleted. We still have some stills from the video, which you can see below.
This will never ever be released, so fear not legal-comment-commenters. I made this because I've been trying to further develop knowledge about creating combat systems in UE4. Making the WoW animations blend well enough for smoothish combat is quite a fun challenge. I also love Gilneas and it's a massive shame that it's just sat there empty.
This is great example of the different things which can be done with Unreal Engine, as most casual observers are only familiar with it being used to bring grandiose cities to life in a way that could never hope to run on a casual gaming computer. While those are awesome to see, this is a bit more relatable as it really does look a lot like the WoW we're familiar with, and the interesting bit here is how well the presentation still manages to fit the feeling of Warcraft; you could just as easily imagine a Human fighting an Orc or multiple characters assaulting a large Pitlord like Magtheridon. This kind of close-camera combat actually isn't even new to WoW, as the
actioncam
console command added in
Legion
has a similar style, however WoW clearly isn't made for playing with the camera that close at all times, and it doesn't quite capture the same action-RPG feel presented in fairafar's video.

As many redditors have pointed out, the gothic feel of Gilneas and the Worgen along with the traditional boss health and resource bars has a distinct
Bloodborne
feel, right down to the transmog used by the player character. The Playstation exclusive is a fan favorite for its Lovecraftian horror themes, and while WoW is a fair bit more colorful and lighthearted, this recreation is a really fun blend of two very different games.
