How does Incense work? What are the differences between Incense and Elixirs? We will answer these questions and more—covering every detail of this consumable in Diablo 4!
Alchemist Crafting Overview Consumables Guide
Incense Basics
Incense is crafted at the Alchemist. It grants a buff on use and the player gains a small area of effect around the character to provide the buff to others who come in contact with it.
Other players coming in contact with the area of effect will receive the incense buff.
We have summarized all important incense details below:
The ability to buff other players lasts for 20 seconds. This overwrites any existing incense buffs of that type on the user and other players.
A player can benefit from one incense of a type at any given time. There are three incense types (Type I, Type II, Type III), which means a player can benefit from a total of three incense buffs at once.
Incense lasts for 20 minutes.
Incense does
not
persist through death.
Only the user of the incense needs to meet the level requirement for using it. Other players can benefit from the incense effect regardless of their level!
The potency of incense is not increased by nearby players, even though it seems to be worded that way in the tooltip. The tooltip is simply referring to the possibility of granting the incense buff to other players.

Incense Types
There are three different types of incense: Type I, Type II, and Type III. Characters can benefit from an incense of each of these types at once. The incense type can be found in the flavor text of the item's tooltip.

Differences Between Incense and Elixirs
Players can benefit from an elixir and incense at the same time. Here are the key differences that set apart these consumables from each other:
Elixirs last 30 minutes and Incense lasts 20 minutes.
Incense buffs will be removed on death, while elixirs persist through death.
Elixirs only affect the player using it, while incense buffs every player in a small radius around the user, which applies to players in and outside of a party.
There can only be one elixir active at a time, but you are able to receive three buffs from incense if each of them belongs to a separate type of incense.
