Recent conversation within the Diablo 4 community has centered around "damage buckets" and how players can increase their overall damage by including certain stats into their character's build. While main stat, additive damage, and critical strike chance are all important for increasing a character's overall damage, one of the best damage modifiers in the game is Vulnerable.
Diablo 4 Vulnerable Guide Status Buffs and Debuffs in Diablo 4
In Diablo 4, the Vulnerable status effect increases all damage taken by 20%. It also just so happens the Vulnerable is one of the only damage multipliers in the game. Other damage modifiers include a character's Main Stat, Critical Strike Damage, and Attack Speed. All other damage modifiers, such as Close, Distant, Fire, Cold, Bleeding, etc. are all put into the same "bucket", so these damage modifiers are considered Additive rather than Multiplicative and do not provide an equivalent amount of increased damage. So while it is still good to have these additive damage modifiers, it is even more beneficial to have multiplicative damage modifiers such as Critical Strike Damage and Vulnerable Damage in most builds.
While Critical Strikes will happen naturally (depending on a character's Critical Strike Chance), the Vulnerable status effect must be applied to enemies in order to benefit from its 20% damage increase. So, how can each class initiate a Vulnerable status effect on enemies? While there are different skills, passives, and legendary powers that increase Vulnerable damage or extend its duration, let's take a look at each class's
guaranteed
Vulnerable initiators.
Barbarian
with Violent Double Swing makes enemies Vulnerable for 1 second.
with Enhanced Kick makes enemies Vulnerable for 4 seconds.
with Mighty Charge makes enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
with Enhanced Steel Grasp makes enemies Vulnerable for 2.5 seconds.
While many of these Skills offer a very short Vulnerable duration, the status effect can be extended by incorporating with Enhanced Rend, in order to extend the Vulnerable status effect by 2 seconds until one of the other initiator skills comes off of cooldown.
Druid
with Innate Cycline Armor makes enemies who are knocked back Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
with Ferocious Ravens makes enemies inside the swarm Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
with Supreme Cataclysm makes enemies Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
Since all of these options have very long Cooldowns, it might be best for a Druid who is interested in creating a Vulnerable build to select with Fierce Storm Strike as their Basic Skill. While this is not a guaranteed source of Vulnerable, it does have a 50% chance to apply the status effect, so this might be the best option for Vulnerable uptime.
Necromancer
with Supernatural Bone Spear makes its first target Vulnerable for 3 seconds. With
Aspect fracturant
, Bone Spear can become a great way to initiate Vulnerable on multiple targets.
with Ghastly Bone Prison makes all enemies inside the prison Vulnerable.
with Plagued Corpse Tendrils makes enemies Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
Selecting
Cold Mages
from the Skeletal Mages section of the Book of the Dead can be upgraded to make enemies who are Frozen by, or damaged while Frozen by your Cold Mage's primary attack Vulnerable for 3 seconds.
Selecting
Iron Golem
from the Golems section of the Book of the Dead can be upgraded to make your Iron Golem's Slam attack make enemies Vulnerable for 5 seconds.
Rogue
with Fundamental Puncture makes an enemy Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
with Subverting Stealth makes enemies hit by the first attack out of Concealment Vulnerable for 6 seconds.
with Blended Shadow Imbuement makes enemies hit by Shadow Imbuement's explosion Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
While is a great Vulnerable initiator on one enemy, combining this with with Improved Flurry and
Aspect de cercle de lames
is a great way to ensure that Vulnerable gets applied to every target within melee range.
Sorcerer
with Destructive Ice Shards makes a target hit with all five Ice Shards Vulnerable for 2 seconds.
with Mystical Frost Nova makes all enemies affected by Frost Nova Vulnerable for 4 seconds, or 6 seconds against Bosses.
While Sorcerers don't have many options to guarantee Vulnerable, if they are able to consistently freeze enemies, this opens up additional options with with Flickering Frost Bolt and with Greater Frozen Orb.
There is also one Paragon Glyph for Barbarian, Druid, and Rogue that can help with Vulnerable initiation, called
Exploitation
. While this Glyph can be great for applying Vulnerable to targets in quick fights, it won't be as effective during boss fights that last more than 3 seconds.
While this is not a comprehensive list of every Vulnerable-related skill or passive, we hope that this list of Vulnerable initiators helps you to include the Vulnerable status effect in your character's build to increase your overall damage. Remember to also load up on your character's main stat, Critical Strike Chance & Critical Strike Damage, as well as any relevant additive damage modifiers to maximize your damage output!
