Thanks to Diablo 4 and
Last Epoch
, the last year has been a great one for ARPG fans worldwide. And if that wasn't enough, another ARPG giant plans to release its newest franchise iteration towards the end of 2024: Path of Exile 2, the new standalone game by Grinding Gear Games, will launch into Early Access very soon!
Heading up to PoE2's launch, we, together with Diablo content creator
jessirocks
, had the opportunity to sit down with Game Director Jonathan Rogers to talk everything Path of Exile 2 and provide brand-new info about the game to Wowhead's ARPG fans!

Highlights
Path of Exile 2 will have the exact same monetization as Path of Exile 1 and will not be pay-to-win.
All in-game elements players have paid for in Path of Exile 1, like cosmetics and stash tabs, will transfer to Path of Exile 2. That doesn't include special league stash tabs if the corresponding league mechanic isn't present in PoE2.
Gold as a currency in Path of Exile 2 is being introduced to give players more options to get good gear and catch up in the early game.
Additionally, Gold will be used as a "fee" during "instant buyout" trading, which will work between both player stashes and via GGG's website. You can still manually trade with players without having to pay the Gold fee, though.
Similar to Diablo 4, you can get really good items from vendors.
During their latest gameplay video showcasing the Witch class, GGG has shown a ton of new minion mechanics coming with Path of Exile 2. Rogers explains that designing and balancing minions was a tall task.
To solve the issue of minion builds dealing a large amount of single-target damage, they decided to introduce temporary minions gained through corpses, which won't be present as much during boss fights as they would be during AoE clearing.
Much like other mechanics, minion count will be capped by the new Spirit resource. However, GGG aims for minion builds to have no more than 20 minions (not including temporary minions) up at the same time.
While minions can be targeted by some boss abilities, GGG wants "big boss abilitites" to only hit players.
During the development of Path of Exile 2, a lot of "180s" happened, and they still do happen even during current development.
System requirements for Path of Exile 2 aren't final yet, as GGG is still working on optimization. However, players with GeForce 10 Series graphics cards should be able to play the game on moderate settings.
Path of Exile will be available on both XBox Series X and PlayStation 5. It is unclear if the game will be playable on Steam Deck, but Rogers sees "no reason why it shouldn't."
As seen in recent video showcases, PoE2 gameplay slows down tremendously compared to Path of Exile 1. Rogers and his team want the game to be readable, and there will be more than enough ways to increase gameplay speed and animations.
Another reason why gameplay could feel slower is that Path of Exile 2 allows attacking while moving, which serves as a way to weave another important decision into character gameplay that can slow down the game and make it more immersive.
When Rogers was asked what decision opened the most design space during Path of Exile 2 development, he replied that the changes to the Skill Gem system are by far the most influential.
Because players can equip up to 11 Skill Gems, and because each skill gem can have up to 5 Support Gems attached to it, GGG has to and also will include a ton of Support Gems in Path of Exile 2.
Another reason why Support Gems have to exist in high numbers is that Path of Exile 2 players can only use every Support Gem once.
