This guide covers everything we know about Mercenaries, their classes and skills, Rapport, and Bartering in the Vessel of Hatred expansion of Diablo 4. Learn about their Perks, Active Abilities, and Passive Abilities, Primary and Reinforcement abilities, what rewards they offer through the Rapport system, and what you can buy with Pale Marks through Bartering in The Den, the mercenaries' home in Nahantu.
Mercenaries Overview
Mercenaries in Diablo 4 are role-based NPCs that accompany players in combat. Players of both Diablo II: Resurrected and Diablo 3 will be familiar with the concept. However, in Diablo 4, you can now have both a Primary Mercenary for everyday solo use and a Reinforcement Mercenary to aid with situational issues. By playing with your Mercenary, you improve your standing (Rapport) with them, giving you access to upgrades, barter opportunities, and more!
Only players with the Vessel of Hatred expansion will be able to play with Mercenaries, since access to their recruitment hall is located in Nahantu.
Quick Facts about Mercenaries
You can start using Mercenaries as soon as you recruit your first one, Raheir.
Mercenaries have up to two primary abilities and two passive abilities.
Unlike previous versions of Diablo, VoH Mercenaries cannot be equipped with gear.
Mercenaries and their progress are shared across all characters within your chosen state (Seasonal non-Hardcore, Seasonal Hardcore, Eternal non-Hardcore, etc). If you've leveled all your Mercenaries to their highest Rapport on Seasonal Non-Hardcore, even your level 1 alts will have fully upgraded Mercenaries.
You can have just one, or both, or none. It's your choice!
Mercenaries that die respawn on their own. There's no need to resurrect them.
How Do I Get a Mercenary?
In the Vessel of Hatred, players can recruit Mercenaries to fight by their side after unlocking the Mercenary's Den during the Vessel of Hatred campaign, which introduces you to stories behind the four Mercenaries that will be available. After one character on that account has completed the campaign through the final main chapter, Presaged Fate, alts can skip the Vessel of Hatred campaign and will have Mercenaries available from Level 1.
Recruiting Primary and Reinforcement Mercenaries
You can recruit two different types of Mercenaries: Primary and Reinforcement.
Primary Mercenaries accompany you when you solo. These will have the most skills available and provide the most active support for you through their Perks, Active Skills, and Passive Skills. They gain experience (Rapport) faster than the Reinforcement Mercenary. You will always see them with you as you complete activities across the world. Primary Mercenaries only show up when you are playing solo.
A Reinforcement Mercenary is a secondary Mercenary that are available whether you're soloing or in a group with other players. For more information on Mercenary Reinforcements, take a look at our guide below.
Mercenary Reinforcement Guide
Accessing your Mercenaries
There are two ways to access your Mercenaries: through the Mercenary panel and through the Den. You select your Mercenaries' Skills and access their Rapport rewards and information in the Mercenary panel. You change your Mercenaries' Primary and Reinforcement assignments and shop for rewards in The Den.
The Mercenary Panel
You can access your Mercenary Panel through your Character panel and click the mercenary tab in the upper right corner. You can also use the keyboard shortcut Shift-M.
Through here, you can see the Skills and Rapport screens of both your Primary Mercenary and your Reinforcement. This is what the Skills Panel for your Primary Mercenary looks like:
To the left, you see a Primary Mercenary (Varyana) with her selected skills. You can change these skills in this panel. On the right, you'll see a display for a Reinforcement Mercenary, where you choose one Active Skill and set the conditions under which you see it. In this case, Raheir is instructed to cast when is cast (subject to the cooldowns of the selected Mercenary skill).
You can also access your Mercenary's Rapport rewards and Rapport progress in this menu as well.
The Den: Mercenary Central
Mercenaries have their own location called The Den, which is located in the Flayer Jungle in the upper northwest corner of Lingering Hatred in Nahantu. Clicking the glowing green icon will activate the Waypoint inside.
The green diamond-shaped icon northeast of Kurast Bazaar takes you to The Den
Inside the Den, you'll be able to recruit both a primary Mercenary and a Reinforcement, a second Mercenary you can summon to do one skill when a defined condition is met. You'll also come here to change these assignments if you want to try different Mercenaries in that role, or when you wish to advance all your mercenaries to their maximum levels. Since you get rewards from your Mercenaries by achieving different levels of Rapport, you'll want to level all of them!
To hire or reassign Mercenaries, click on the Mercenary you wish to Hire (Primary) or Enlist (Reinforcement) in The Den:
To change assignments, you also click on the Mercenary you wish to change in The Den:
Example of Dismissing an active Mercenary (you can rehire them later)
The Den also features a special vendor, Fayira, where you'll be able to Barter to purchase gear and Caches using special currency, Pale Marks. We'll cover this more under the Vendor section. You'll also find:
Your stash
Guide Coffers - a Ring and Amulet vendor you can use to buy and sell normally
Cursed Toy Box - an Occultist
Raheir's Anvil - a Blacksmith
Types of Mercenary Skills
Perks, Active, and Passive Skills
Mercenaries have three different types of abilities:
Perks:
These are passive abilities that give non-combat perks (and in one case, an interesting curse that may backfire). Perks only apply to a Primary Mercenary, not to a Reinforcement.
Active Abilities:
Each one has four available Active Skills, two Core and two Iconic skills, that determine what weapons your Mercenary use and what combat actions they perform. You can choose one Core Active Skill and one Iconic Active Skill for your Primary Mercenary. You can choose one Active Skill for your Reinforcement Mercenary.
Passive Abilities:
Each one has four available Passives, two Core Passives and two Iconic Passives. These are generally either buffs to you or debuffs to your enemies. You can choose one Core Passive and one Iconic Passive for your Primary Mercenary only.
Raheir, the Shieldbearer
Archetype:
Tank
Raheir is a blacksmith trained by the Iron Wolves, using his massive shield to block enemy attacks and provide defensive support. Raheir has an AoE Barrier ability that mitigates incoming damage for himself and nearby players and bolsters Armor and defensive buffs through Resiliency. Raheir should be the primary choice for players running more aggressive builds who would benefit from additional survivability.
Raheir Mercenary Skills and Perk
Raheir Mercenary Perk
Choosing Raheir as your primary gives you the following perk:
Valiance: When you would be damaged for at least 15% of your current Life at once, Raheir comes to your aid to negate the damage, Knock Down Close enemies for 2 seconds, and grant you Unstoppable for 0.5 seconds.
Cooldown: 30 seconds.
Raheir's Shield Charge Tree
Raheir's Shield Charge tree focuses on Taunts. Within this tree, you can choose combinations of extra Armor, Slowing enemies, Damage Reduction, pulling in enemies, increasing damage, or applying Vulnerable.

Varyana, the Berserker Crone
Archetype:
Berserker DPS
A butcher and former cannibal, Varyana is a Berserker specializing in close-range combat. This bloodthirsty brawler has a killstreak mechanic that increases in strength as she kills enemies, and her grip ability pulls enemies into melee range. Varyana looks to be a well-rounded Mercenary that will work well with most playstyles. She seems particularly good for melee DPS builds.
Varyana Mercenary Skills and Perk
Varyana's Mercenary Perk
Choosing Varyana as your primary gives you the following perk:
Massacre: You and Varyana stack Massacre together on kills. Certain stack thresholds grant Movement Speed:
10 Stacks: +5% Movement Speed
25 Stacks: +10% Movement Speed
50 Stacks: +15% Movement Speed
100 Stacks: +20% Movement Speed
Cooldown: Massacre resets after 7 seconds of not killing an enemy.
Varyana's Cleave Skill Tree
Varyana's Cleave Skill Tree starts with a big hit with a high probability for applying a heavy Bleed DoT. This tree also offers choices of adding to your Attack Speed, applying Vulnerable, reducing damage, applying a small Heal, or pulling enemies in to her.

Aldkin, the Cursed Child
Archetype:
Shadow/Fire Caster
This half-demon creature can shapeshift between forms and deal devastating AoE Fire Damage to enemies, engulfing the battlefield in flames. Aldkin will likely be a strong Mercenary choice for builds with strong survivability and those who need assistance with AoE encounters. Aldkin's skills reflect a shadow mage archtype.
Aldkin Mercenary Skills and Perk
Aldkin Mercenary Perk
Choosing Aldkin as your primary gives you the following perk -- although in Aldkin's case, this perk has a dark side! Players who do not wish to use Aldkin as a Primary may prefer to level them as a Reinforcement, avoiding this mechanic entirely.
Blasphemous Fire: Aldkin occasionally loses control of his curse, transforming into a ferocious demon for 22 seconds. This grants Aldkin powerful new abilities, but the unleashed evil curses you for its duration.
Curse of Darkness: You and your nearby enemies become Vulnerable.
Curse of Flames: Your direct damage Burns enemies for 30% damage over 3 seconds, but you lose 10% of your Maximum Resource per second.
Aldkin's curse and demon form are determined by his Mercenary Core Skill.
Aldkin's Haunt Skill Tree
Aldkin's Haunt skill tree focuses on Shadow damage, with abilities that can Daze, Stun, Slow, and apply Vulnerable, as well as instantly kill non-elite enemies at 40% health affected with one of their skills.

Subo, the Drunken Archer
Archetype:
Rogue DPS
This ranged bounty hunter offers ranged AoE support, unleashing barrages of arrows on groups of enemies from a distance. This archer provides player support by marking targets that grant buffs when killed. Expected to fall somewhere between the playstyle supplementation of Varyana and Aldkin, Subo should work well with most builds.
Subo Mercenary Skills and Perk
Subo's Mercenary Perk
Choosing Subo as your primary gives you the following perk:
Seeker:
Passive:
Subo reveals all enemies and materials in the area.
Active:
Subo calls out an enemy target, marking them for 10 seconds. Killing a marked enemy restores 50% of your Maximum Resource and reduces Subo's Seeker cooldown by 10 seconds.
Cooldown: 20 seconds.
Subo's Wire Tap Skill Tree
The Wire Trap tree starts with a big-damage skill that Stuns enemies. Choices in this tree include increasing movement speed after damaging Elites, Slowing enemies, improving Crit Strike damage, applying Vulnerable, and increasing Crowd Control duration.

The Rapport System
Mercenary Rapport functions similarly to seasonal reputations, such as the Season 5 Mother's Blessing system. Playing alongside each Mercenary will improve your Rapport, granting access to Mercenary upgrades and skill points, rewards, and improved Bartering options through the Den's special vendor, Fayira.
Rapport is shared accountwide among all your characters that exist in a particular state: Seasonal, Eternal, Seasonal Hardcore, and Eternal Hardcore. Item rewards can only be claimed once, so choose carefully!
Leveling Mercenary Rapport
Mercenaries earn Rapport the way you earn experience. The more you play with a specific Mercenary, the stronger they become. As you do activities with your primary Mercenary and Reinforcement Mercenary, they'll gain Rapport with you and reach Rapport Levels.
Your Primary Mercenary will earn full Rapport when they solo with you, and your Reinforcement Mercenary earns half of what the Primary Mercenary would earn for the same activity. . When you're grouped with other players, your Reinforcement Mercenary will earn experience, but your Primary will not since that Mercenary is not accompanying you.
Mercenaries benefit from experience bonus items. from Season 6 content is particularly great for leveling Mercenaries.
Rapport earns the following:
Open
Bartering
, a system that allows you to use the Mercenaries' Pale Marks currency to purchase gear and special caches from Fayira.
Reward gold, Pale Marks, materials, and caches containing Legendary gear items; the Legendary item type depends on the Mercenary offering them:
Aldkin - Rings
Raheir - Armor
Subo - Amulets
Varyana - Weapons
You can level up Rapport with all four Mercenaries to earn all their loot!
After each Mercenary reaches Rapport X, there will be no more direct loot, but each Rapport level you earn afterward rewards 200 Pale Marks. Each new Rapport level after X is 25,000 Mercenary experience to earn.

Bartering and Pale Marks
Bartering allows players to purchase gear and currencies through Mercenaries with Pale Marks, a currency gained through Rapport and completing activities with your Mercenary. You earn 850 Pale Marks leveling one mercenary to Rapport X, so that's 3400 for all four! Plus, every Rapport level your Mercenaries earn beyond 10 earns 200 more Pale Marks each.
Like Rapport, Pale Marks are also shared accountwide among all your characters that exist in a particular state: Seasonal, Eternal, Seasonal Hardcore, and Eternal Hardcore.
If you've already opened Bartering on one character, any of your other characters with access to those Mercenaries can start Bartering at
level 15
.
Fayina, Raheir's daughter, serves as the vendor for The Den. She starts with four slots offering Legendary items for sale. The level of these items is appropriate for your character's current level and difficulty setting. At Torment I, all items offered through Fayira will be minimum of 750.
Fayira the vendor at her table in the center of the Den
Barter is not available at Level 1, even if fully opened on a previous character.
When you wish to trade Pale Marks for items or Caches, click Fayira at her spot in the middle of the Den. You will be able to see what she has available, and whether she is currently charging for a Restock. All prices are listed in Pale Marks.
What's for sale today?
Some tips for using Bartering:
It is possible to get Ancestral Legendary items with Greater Affixes through Bartering.
Caches containing materials and Runes can supply multiple Runes. It's one of the best guaranteed sources for Runes outside of farming Kurast Undercity with Tributes of Harmony.
Level up all your Mercenaries at least to Rapport X to open up all rewards. This also increase the number of items for sale and reduces the number of Pale Marks you need to purchase items.
Check Aspects of listed items to see if these are upgrades for existing versions. You can sometimes get an Aspect upgrade this way!
Unlike other vendors, you can reset Fayira at will -- for a price. Early on, you'll get a few free restocks, but then you'll need to pay 50x Pale Marks per reset.

I remember early on in D3 how often the followers would die then over the years how many changes they made to the followers; these followers are going to die all the time almost useless.

So, the only way to unlock is to play the campaign, like the mounts? Skipping the campaign will lock you out from them?
Then if we play in groups exclusively, we won't ever be able to level the primary, only the support? Are they basically forcing you to play solo long enough to grind them up?
