Equipped with one of the most iconic Diablo skills, the Chain Lightning Sorcerer has always been a spellcaster community favorite. With Season 5, breathed new life into the archetype, enabling a unique playstyle around Mana cap increase and generation. In Vessel of Hatred, however, will only play a supporting (and yet still important) role for Chain Lightning Sorcerer because one of the original Sorcerer Unique items will take its spot: . With so much more Intelligence available on items and the Paragon board in Vessel of Hatred, this amulet’s unique power obliterates everything around you in the form of a Lightning Nova simply by running over Crackling Energy orbs.

Chain Lightning Sorcerer Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
Weaknesses
Never before has a build that exclusively relies on collecting Crackling Energy shown this much potential. With over 4000 Intelligence on a decently progressed endgame character, we’re looking at over 5000% increased damage for . The result? Damage numbers in the billions.
In high-level play and Pit pushing however, the incredible damage scaling comes with a small caveat: you need to control Crackling Energy spawns and collecting to fully optimize your damage output, which isn’t too hard once you get the hang of it.
Best Chain Lightning Sorcerer Skills and Rotation
The game plan for this build is incredibly simple: collect Crackling Energy off the ground and make everything around you go boom. With and its modifier , we can create a ton of Crackling Energy with critical hits; the same goes for the Static Discharge passive.
With equipped, we can create even more Crackling Energy because a single cast of can bounce around much more often.
Apart from the new interaction with , the rest of this build’s toolkit is Sorc standard: we use as our main defensive tool and to create Barrier synergy, while Flame Shield serves as another source of Unstoppable and also Immune. and its Enchantment increase our stacks and apply tons of stuns to monsters out of range of our Nova hits. For movement, we use both and to have as many options as possible to collect Crackling Energy quickly. Last but not least, helps create more Crackling Energy and also summons Fire Familiars, which are essential to unlocking Burning synergies on our Paragon board.

is this build’s main skill and our main source of Crackling Energy thanks to the modifier. Together with , can deal quite a bit of damage on its own too; however, we mainly use this skill to create and control the spawn of Crackling Energy.
is another core tool to scale up our damage. We summon more Conjurations with it, gain more Attack Speed thanks to , and can even create additional Crackling Energy.
As our only reliable source of Vulnerable, is an essential part of this build. It produces additional stacks, further increasing our damage, and adds a ton of Stagger potential against bosses.
provides a massive Barrier while also activating important Barrier-related synergies. is our second modifier of choice; it basically guarantees 100% uptime of this skill because we not only spend but also drain massive amounts of Mana, which should count as “Mana spent.”
As one of the most iconic movement skills in all of Diablo, does one and one job only in this build setup: it gets us in and out of combat situations quickly. provides much-needed Damage Reduction, which is the main reason why we chose it as the second skill modifier.
is the primary source of CC-break in every Sorc build’s line-up. Because of it, we can play much more aggressively than other classes and teleport into enemies much more carelessly.
Chain Lightning Sorcerer Passive Skills
With our passive skill lineup, we try to improve our Crackling Energy damage while speccing into as many defensive tools as possible.
What requires at least a bit of context is the fact that still found a way into a Cold-centric build—and without active. So how can we apply Burning besides ?
It is essential to understand that , Sorc’s new active skill in Vessel of Hatred, actually serves as a powerful passive skill in this build. counts as a Shock skill, which is why it is being cast by . Since we also invest into , each that is being created by after a Fire skill has been cast—so in our case, --will be a Fire that applies Burning. This is a small but important detail that is the sole reason we invest in Burning synergies without the need to run .
Key Passive
is the new star of Sorc’s key passives in Vessel of Hatred. One may think that the obvious choice for a Crackling Energy build would be - but instead, we try to scale up our Crackling Energy damage as much as possible while keeping high stacks, so is our weapon of choice for this build!
Offensive Passive Skills
- is one of the most essential damage Sorc passives, and we fully invest into it. Thanks to countless defensive layers, the passive’s downside shouldn’t hurt us too much.
- As mentioned before, is absolutely massive for scaling not only our damage but also our Mana Regeneration and Movement Speed. While this build doesn’t create as many Conjurations compared to other Sorc builds, it is still a decent skill point investment.
- As already mentioned, we fully invest in this talent to improve our ability to create Crackling Energy on the ground.
- This Chain Lightning Sorcerer build is yet another setup that makes use of . By providing Burning through Fire Familiars and Crowd Control through several abilities and Temper Affixes, we unlock massive Critical Damage potential with this extremely powerful passive.
- Thanks to our “Chance to Freeze” Tempered Affixes, we can add this great 18% damage multiplier to our offensive lineup.
- With a total of four Lightning skills on our bar, this is a flat 12% damage multiplier - and we’ll gladly take it without hesitation!
Defensive Passive Skills
- With Resistances becoming much more critical due to the massive Resistance reductions in higher Torment tiers, this passive is worth its weight in gold.
- Every Sorc build wants to increase its Barrier uptime and maximum value, so this skill does great things to our survivability while covering crucial Barrier synergies in earlier stages of character progression due to low CDR values on other Barrier effects like .
- Flat Damage Reduction on the skill tree is massive, so we’ll gladly invest three points in this new Vessel of Hatred passive.
- Damage Reduction is the name of the defensive game, and guarantees a ton of it on average, with up to 60% against the “first hit” of an Elite or Boss enemy, which is extremely effective.
- With , we fill out our 100% Maximum Life Barrier cap. Together with , both Barriers basically serve as a second Life globe for this build.
- Damage Reduction is an extremely important defensive stat, and is yet another way to gain more of it, totaling 30% Damage Reduction for a mere 3-point investment.
- is yet another passive which adds Damage Reduction. We critical hit regularly, so this debuff should almost always be applied against high-health enemies or bosses that try to bring us down through one-hits.
Utility Passive Skills
- As we invest into , Lucky Hit Chance is a vital stat to scale for Crackling Energy generation together with other, more offensive attributes like Critical Strike Chance.
- has a relatively high Mana cost, and makes things much, much worse, so we take everything to counter the curse part of this Unique item, allowing us to cast more spells and thus create more Crackling Energies.
- Most of our skills rely on high Cooldown Reduction, so a flat 12% of it works wonders to improve our Barrier uptime, CC breaks, and, ultimately, damage.
Best Chain Lightning Sorcerer Enchantments Choices
We are a Crackling Energy build, so taking as our first Enchantment makes perfect sense. More equals more stacks, so more damage, utility, and movement.
We take as our second Enchantment slot to further increase this build’s mobility. Thanks to and high Attack Speed, we will be able to teleport around frequently, which also significantly affects our survivability.

Chain Lightning Sorcerer Runewords
- Forbidden Call to Arms
This Runeword will cast after triggering our second Runeword, which casts yet another class spell. This powerful Barbarian Shout skill and its incredible damage buff will last 6 seconds. In later stages of endgame progression, we should be able to keep this buff up pretty much all the time by just consistently pressing our cooldowns and by spamming .
- Essential Disdain
As our second Runeword, we will invoke a second skill from another class —. After a bunch of casts, we will cast this massive Necromancer curse that adds a ton of Damage Reduction, Slow, and even Execute through .
Best-in-Slot Chain Lightning Sorcerer Gear
This setup represents the best gear for the Chain Lightning Sorcerer. Since many of these items and Aspects are based on drops, this may take time to achieve. Alternatives are provided when applicable, but making substitutions to BiS gear can have negative consequences on performance. You will want to Imprint Legendary Aspects onto other Legendary items since Legendaries will have 3 Affixes and Rare items only have 2.

: Cooldown Reduction
really brings everything to the table that we want in this Chain Lightning Sorcerer build: Damage Reduction, Cooldown Reduction, Maximum Life, and those sweet +4 Ranks to all Skills. With these four additional ranks, we not only boost our damage across the board but also reach the 100% Barrier cap with and . Obtaining an Uber Unique item can take quite some time, so you should use on a Legendary helm with Maximum Life, Cooldown Reduction, and Intelligence before acquiring Shako.

is essential to properly manipulate the battlefield and our enemies. We want the Nova caused by to hit as many enemies as possible, and its radius is finite, so pulling together all enemies is a must while running of Crackling Energy globes to proc Novas.

: Intelligence
Vulnerable damage showcases an important multiplier in our damage mix, so equipping will work wonders for our overall Crackling Energy damage scaling.

Masterworking Priority
: Damage Reduction
Playing a key supporting role in this build’s gear setup is . As mentioned, it turns into a completely different skill while also bringing insanely valuable stats to the table. Through this effect, we will be able to get a lot more active on the battlefield, so more Crackling Energy will spawn on average. Regarding Masterworking, we want to increase our Damage Reduction even further.
Boots
Masterworking Priority
: Intelligence
We use Cooldown Reduction as one of our main tools to increase this build’s damage, and the newly introduced helps greatly in reaching our goals. Together with our relatively high base CDR value, this aspect should make it possible to have active pretty much all the time in the later stages of item progression. The Masterworking priority should be Intelligence to increase our Nova damage.
Amulet

: Lord Zir
Masterworking Priority
: +% Intelligence
The heart of this build’s gear setup is . Our goal is to scale its damage as much as possible through intelligence stacking. With up to 3500 Intelligence in the late stages of item progression, we will be able to hit incredibly hard with the Lightning Nova this item produces by frequently collecting Crackling Energy.
Ring
Source
: Varshan
Masterworking Priority
: Cooldown Reduction
As always, has to be our number-one ring pick in this setup. We will cast spells of all three elemental schools regularly, and with the recent buff to this beautiful ring, we will be able to deal up to 25% increased multiplicative damage per element, so 75% total, which is unmatched compared to any other damage aspect.
We keep our priorities straight regarding Masterworking and continue to further boost Cooldown Reduction.
Ring

Masterworking Priority
: Critical Strike Chance
is the second unique Mythic item in this gear setup, and it is well worth the effort to acquire it. It lets us cast even more reliably and even rewards us with a massive multiplier that scales our Nova damage even further. We try to Masterwork Critical Strike Chance to increase our top-end damage potential.
Main Hand
Masterworking Priority
: Intelligence
is just an excellent damage aspect without any restrictions, so we fully invest in it by using a staff. Another advantage of wielding a staff is the massive Intelligence affix it can roll, which will also be our #1 Masterworking priority.

Best Chain Lightning Sorcerer Affixes and Tempers
These are among the best Item Affixes and Tempering Affixes for the Chain Lightning Sorcerer build in Season 6 endgame content.
Despite this build trying to scale Nova damage, +% Chance for to Hit Twice as our Weapon Temper is still great additional damage. Furthermore, we try to stack as many unconditional damage bonuses as possible, so +% Critical Strike Damage is our Offensive Temper of choice. Regarding Utility Tempers, we only really want to invest in Lucky Hit to Freeze to create the massively powerful synergy from our skill tree.

Chain Lightning Sorcerer Paragon
Increasing our Nova damage is the name of the game for the Paragon setup of this version of Chain Lightning Sorcerer. Non-Physical Damage and Vulnerable Damage will be the most sought after, while we will also invest in more utility-based nodes like .
Start Board -
The Start board received a massive update with Vessel of Hatred, and we try to get the most out of it by maxing out ’s Dexterity-based bonus, which is one of the best in the game, combined with the Glyph's multiplicative damage boost. We’ll also collect a ton of Elite Damage and Maximum Life along the way.
Frigid Fate -
This board is worth including solely because of its Legendary Node, , which provides a hefty 60% damage multiplier against Vulnerable enemies. It also features a ton of Intelligence within Glyph radius, so is a match made in heaven to get massive amounts of Nova scaling out of this Glyph and board.
Fundamental Release -
is the new Vessel of Hatred board for Sorcerers, and it’s pretty much a must-have in every Sorc Paragon setup. Fundamental Release features multiple easy-to-achieve conditions, providing an absolutely massive damage multiplier while also offering tons of high-value Rare node clusters to invest in on our way to Paragon Level 300.
The amount of Dexterity nodes within Glyph range is also decent, so we put in to increase our speed-farming potential.
Static Surge -
In comparison, we don’t invest a ton of points in this board. Its Legendary Node, , however, will help us to increase Vulnerable uptime and increase the amount of on the battlefield due to its Mana Regen effect. Like Frigid Fate, Static Surge also features a ton of Intelligence nodes around the Glyph socket, so is the Glyph of choice to further increase unconditional Nova damage.
Enchantment Master -
As our final board, Enchantment Master offers many Non-Physical Damage nodes to pick up. It’s also really the only board to put in , which features yet another great Glyph damage multiplier. On our way to Paragon Level 300, we will eventually invest into to further boost our Enchantment effects.

Can the build author let us know how far this build can go in a D4 pit? I'm starting to have issues with mana/cooldown with this build.

Op, in "Best-in-Slot Chain Lightning Sorcerer Gear" rings section you mention Tal Rasha's Iridescent Loop twice, instead of Ring of Starless Skies.
