Blood Surge Necromancer Overview in Diablo 4
"The world... will drown... in Blood." None dare stand in the path of the Blood Surge Necromancer. Within mere seconds, whatever may have tried to stop you is reduced to nothing more than a crimson mist. The Blood Surge Necro is a speed-running, killing machine with its unbridled AoE damage, an almost infinite amount of Essence on AoE pulls (bringing down time to a minimum), and an Army of Skeletons that quickly handles any and all Single Target threats.
The Blood Surge Necromancer deletes entire swarms of enemies in seconds.
The Blood Surge Necromancer unleashes enemy-pack-annihilating waves of blood magic, being fueled with an instant Essence refresh per enemy hit with - allowing you to move from pack to pack with little to no stopping time. For those few moments that are left, fills the void while we safely tuck between our army of minions, giving us a valuable distraction tool.
Our minions not only provide an extra layer of protection to our already tanky self, but they also serve to pick up the slack where we somewhat struggle. For single-target fights such as solo Elites and Bosses, our minions offer assistance with surprisingly respectable single-target damage and further increase how fast we fill Boss Stagger bars.
Strengths and Weaknesses for Blood Surge Necromancer
Blood Surge Necromancer excels when able to move from AoE pack to AoE pack with multiple tools allowing us to do so. With such an array of options, including: , , for safety, and for Essence generation, not to mention our Minions, there really isn't anything that can stand in our path during the 1-50 leveling process, and we always have an option for any given situation.

How to Play Blood Surge Necromancer
The Blood Surge Necromancer's entire game plan is to get into the middle of a pack, then begin using until the enemies are either dead, or we've run out of Essence. Exploring our skill tree, you'll notice our becomes stronger when multiple enemies are hit by it. We'll use at the beginning of every engagement. When enhanced with , this refills Essence based on how many enemies are hit, giving us the possibility to completely refill our resource.
comes into play as a high-damage option for longer-lasting fights where you've run out of Essence but have Corpses available. Our Minions generally play a large part during the times when we'll be using this ability.
This is a common rotation for the Blood Surge Necromancer. The goal is to curse a large group, then dash into the middle of them, and begin deleting everything at once with massive AoE Damage without having to stop for more than a few seconds.
- Need some Essence? See a large pack? Apply first above all else, and instantly refill that resource meter.
- This ability grows stronger the more enemies it hits. Dash into the very middle of a pack before casting, and try to prioritize groups with at least 5 enemies at the minimum, although do not slow yourself down by taking the time to gather them up. Let it flow.
- For single target or small packs - if corpses are available, this becomes your bread and butter. They'll never see it coming.
- Use this regularly to keep your Minions alive. For single target or small packs - make sure this buff remains active at all times.
- This spell can be used to direct your Golem and also apply the Unstoppable status to avoid Crowd Control effects.
- Without enough enemies to refill our Essence through Iron Maiden, and no corpses available, this becomes your resource generation. Generally, this will be used sparsely or on single-target fights.

Leveling Build for Blood Surge Necromancer
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50.
Active Skills for Blood Surge Necromancer
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
Hemorrhage kicks off our journey through the leveling process. This basic attack is our go-to because it deals instant damage to enemies when cast, without needing a projectile to connect, and it has a fast-casting animation that's increased further by our chosen modifiers. Generally, this will be used very situationally, i.e., during single-target fights such as Bosses or a small amount of Elites. Also, this ability has a chance to spawn a Blood Orb, which when gathered, causes Hemorrhage to hit additional targets and generate even more Essence.
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
Blood Surge tears the blood from the bodies of your enemies, dealing a bit of damage, and then expels it back out in a devastating radius of Blood which will often kill whatever it hits instantly, or within a small amount of casts. This ability is an absolute powerhouse during the 1-50 leveling process. And if that weren't enough, the skill is further enhanced with , which causes our casts of Blood Surge to release additional blasts or echoes shortly after the original cast for a reduced amount of damage. Use this core skill frequently, and the rivers will run red.
Try to always be within the middle of enemy packs before casting this ability, either through dashing or running directly there.
(1/5)
Corpse
Modifiers:
Corpse Explosion is best used in several instances, e.g., when we run out of Essence, have Corpses available, during single-target fights such as Bosses or a small amount of Elites, or during events. For events specifically, our chosen modifiers can often allow you to easily achieve the mastery without ever having to move your character. We take despite our build not revolving around dealing Shadow damage. Rather, we take it because it transforms the ability into a Damage-Over-Time ground effect. This pool of shadow it places can stack. Meaning if you cast 3 Corpse Explosions, each pool will deal its own damage separately instead of combining into one larger instance of damage. With a rather quick casting animation, having an enemy standing in the middle of multiple pools will melt their health bar very quickly. And we will be generating more than enough Corpses to achieve this.
Be sure to still use Blood Surge when you have Essence. However, Corpse Explosion casts so quickly, that you'll be able to place multiple pools and then toss in a Blood Surge in a very smooth fashion. Be sure to use Corpse Explosion often as we also gain a damage increase through .
(1/5)
Curse
Modifiers:
Iron Maiden will more often than not be your very first ability cast when engaging an enemy. We only take one modifier here due to what it does, i.e., it gives us a massive amount of Essence when cast on multiple enemies. Since the vast majority of your gameplay revolves around eliminating large groups of enemies, Iron Maiden will very consistently refill your entire Essence meter. Allowing you to constantly be pushing forward. It also causes enemies to take damage when they deal direct damage to you. This is nice; however, you'll be killing things so quickly it hardly ever comes into play. Nevertheless, you can use this on hard-hitting enemies by purposely standing in their ability, then reflecting back a percentage of however much damage it hit for. Results may vary — standing in an enemy's ability may cause sudden death! Be sure you have an idea how hard something will hit before attempting this.
Even if there is not enough enemies to give enough Essence from Iron Maiden usage, ALWAYS keep this curse active. We gain another damage increase through .
(1/1)
Summoning
Golem gives us yet another Minion that also serves as a giant brick wall for abrupt tougher encounters. Its active usage depends on the selection, and since we're leveling, nearly all of them have certain situational uses that are better than others. More often than not, you may use this ability simply on cooldown or to blast a group of Elites immediately. Things will die quickly, so don't feel the need to hold onto it although we're already typically 1-shotting things. It also applies Unstoppable once activated, giving it defensive capabilities too.
Note: For Capstone Dungeons it is recommended to sacrifice Blood Golem and use instead to avoid mechanics.
Summoning
Raise Skeleton is another ability you'll want to use rather often. Not only will it keep your Minions alive, but it also provides them with a damage increase. Make sure when casting Corpse Explosion to always keep a few Corpses available for Raise Skeleton. You'll see the timer above Raise Skeletons icon on your skill bar. When it's about to run out, cast it again. Keep it rolling.
Keeping this active is exceptionally important on single-target fights or small groups of enemies. Your Minions can deal a surprising amount of damage, and you are reliant on them for smaller engagements. They will take your single-target damage from mediocre to rather acceptable. Support them, and they'll return the favor.
Passive Skills for Blood Surge Necromancer
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Blood Surge Necromancer, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
(1/3)
Core
Unliving Energy allows us to reach . A little extra max Essence never hurt anybody.
(3/3)
Core
Our Essence costs increased, but the rise in damage makes this well worth it.
(3/3)
Core
Hewed Flesh allows you to produce enough Corpses to fuel both your and on Bosses, as well as for smaller engagements when large groups of enemies are not readily available.
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
This not only increases damage but more importantly makes your Skeletal Warriors tankier. Until we reach this talent, you'll often see them dying. However, they're merely a tool for distraction early on. Once we have our full points within this passive, their damage is respectable, yet not enough to force points here earlier than listed.
(1/3)
Corpse & Macabre
With how quickly casts, this passive can really bring in the Essence. Although we already have a massive generator through , and another source of Essence gain from our Skeletal Mages, we simply take a single point to reach the next passive.
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
You'll want to always make sure this buff is running since this gives such a lovely damage increase, consume at least one Corpse often. The abilities we take which do consume corpses can be cast quite swiftly. Still, we tend to constantly be on the move, making this buff more consistent on longer-lasting fights.
(3/3)
Curse
We're constantly within the very middle of enemies as Blood Surge Necromancers; this is also one of the few defensive passives we have, making it an instant pick-up.
(3/3)
Curse
While leveling, Movement Speed generally becomes king of the affixes.
(3/3)
Curse
As noted earlier in our rotation explanation, this passive is one of the main reasons you always want to open with a Curse, and keep it applied.
(3/3)
Curse
Right out of the gate, our Skeletal Mages damage is noticeable. Once we place full points into this, these magical abominations can really dish out some serious punishment. Typically, they will carry your single-target damage, which we somewhat lack.
(1/3)
Corpse & Macabre
The extra healing provided here is nice, yet the real purpose of a single point is to reach the next set of passives.
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
Since we're focused on Blood, we have a ton of healing and tankiness with this build. We're almost always at Healthy status, making this passive damage increase nearly permanent unless things go really, really wrong.
(2/3)
Corpse & Macabre
Maintaining Fortify provides us with not only a damage reduction but also a substantial damage increase toward our Blood Surge. This offers even more Fortify generation allowing us to hold this status with relative ease.
(3/3)
Ultimate
This is a simple damage increase for both us and our Minions.
(2/3)
Ultimate
More healing allows our Minions to survive a bit better, which is always a plus.
(3/3)
Ultimate
We're more often than not near our Skeletal Warriors, and our Skeletal Mages have a very bad habit of being in Melee range, which means this passive is active very often.
(1/1)
Key Passives
We're nearly always Healthy, which translates to this passive constantly building forward towards a guaranteed Overpower.

Blood Surge Necromancer Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Lost Archives, Fractured Peaks
Halls of the Damned, Kehjistan
Hoarfrost Demise, Fractured Peaks
Dark Ravine, Dry Steppes
Oldstones, Scosglen
Aldurwood, Scosglen
These are all solid choices until you can find some of the more difficult ones. Many of them you will keep, unless you find a better version of the exact same one. The strongest being , which will go on your Amulet since you replace weapons so often while leveling.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
Extra Minions means extra damage and more tools for distraction. All of these combined are quite noticeable on single-target fights and small encounters. And since we rely on our Minions for those situations, the benefits these Aspects offer are beautiful.
Overall, we see powerful offensive and defensive boosts to our gameplay from these Aspects.

Blood Surge Necromancer Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it: One that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
You'll constantly be swapping weapons as you level, due to this, you will always focus on equipping the highest-damage weapon you can find. We're not cooldown-reliant, and a slightly quicker casting animation doesn't provide a huge bonus to us. If you have a choice, then 2H Swords or 2H Scythes are optimal. However, highest damage remains the top priority by far whilst leveling as a Blood Surge Necromancer.
Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Blood Surge Necromancer Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
Life synergizes with our entire build, making Rubies once again our go-to option. However, Sapphires can be an alternative if you do not have enough Rubies to fill your socket slots. We're constantly generating Fortify, allowing Sapphires to more easily activate. Still, if you have enough Rubies to socket, prioritize them in your Armor.
Weapon Gems
Rubies provide a boost to Overpower damage. We're generally at the mercy of RNG for Overpower to happen, outside of the one slow-charging yet consistent way we have from our Key Passive. We don't take Corpse Tendrils, since we clear so quickly, and we constantly want to be on the move. Also, our Mages provide much better utilities for us, which means we do not have an option for Vulnerable. Making this our default and only real choice.
Jewelry Gems
Skulls while leveling will generally offer the strongest bonus since there aren't a lot of spells being thrown by enemies. However, it does vary, and Diamonds are the generic Resistance options. Above all though, players should adjust their gems based on what they're currently fighting or struggling with.
