Act I
Quest 1: The Den of Evil
Recommended Level: 1-3
This quest is mostly self-explanatory. You need to kill every monster inside the cave. Like most quests in Act I, this is technically optional, but the reward is worth the time investment.
Inside the cave, you’ll come up against Fallen, Fallen Shaman, Gargantuan Beasts, and Zombies. Your priority needs to be the Fallen Shaman because they will resurrect any Fallen that you kill. Taking them down quickly will make it much easier to clear the hordes. The Gargantuan Beasts can also cause some problems due to their relatively high health pool. Try to approach them in one-on-one combat if possible.
The boss of this location is a zombie named Corpsefire. The best way to deal with him is to pick off the other zombies with him, and then take him down when he’s by himself. Make sure to come with plenty of health potions in case he does a large amount of damage unexpectedly.
Once all of the enemies are down, you’ll hear some music play and see bright lights shine down on the cave. Use a Scroll of Town Portal (TP) to head back to the
Rogue Encampment
and talk to Akara. She will give you a free skill point and let you reset your stats and skills. You can only do this once per difficulty, so use it wisely. At this point, we’d also recommend purchasing a Tome of Town Portal from Akara. This will let you more easily stack TPs so that you don't have to take up so much inventory space. If you didn’t find a belt in the
Den of Evil
, pick one up now as well. This will increase your survivability as you’ll have more potions at hand.
Act II
Quest 2, Part 1: The Horadric Staff
Recommended Level: 17-20
Prepare yourself for quite the trek. This particular quest asks you to find three different items, all in different areas around the map. First up, you need to head out into the
Rocky Waste
that’s found just beyond Lut Gholein’s gates. Out here, you’ll run into Saber Cats, Spear Cats, Undead Scavengers, and Cave Leapers. For the most part, these won’t be much of a challenge for you unless you let yourself get overwhelmed by numbers. It should be noted though that Scavengers can fly for a short time during which they’re invulnerable, while Leapers can be tough to hit because they frequently jump over your character and dart around the screen.
That said, you should be able to make your way through this area to the
Dry Hills
fairly easily. Simply stick to the edges of the map until you find a pass in the rocks that takes you to the next location. Here, you’ll run into the same enemies as well as Scarab Demons. These function similarly to Rakinshu from Act 1 in that they shoot out lightning when struck. Again, top up those resistances so that you can stay alive.
As you wander the area, you want to look for both the area’s
Waypoint
and the entrance to the
Halls of the Dead
. Grabbing the Waypoint before heading into the dungeon can cut down your running around time dramatically, so it’s worth searching it out. Inside the dungeon, you’ll encounter a few new monsters. One of these is the Sarcophagi which spawns Decayed mummies. You want to take these out quickly so that the mummies don’t overwhelm you. And, make sure to watch out for poison that comes off of the mummies when they die.
You will also come across Hollow Ones. These stronger mummies look and function similarly to Radament. They can resurrect skeletons, spit out a poison cloud, and use an ability called
Unholy Bolt
to shoot at you from afar. As with many enemies, Hollow Ones and their minions can overwhelm you. Play carefully when they appear, and don’t be afraid to use a tactical retreat if they start to get the best of you.
Once you hit the third level of the dungeon, you’ll run into a mini-boss Saber Cat named Bloodwitch the Wild. She is alarmingly quick and uses melee attacks. If she and her horde overwhelm you, move back to a doorway and use it as a chokepoint so that you can thin them out a bit. Once she’s dealt with, open the chest to retrieve the Horadric Cube. This is an important item that gives you inventory space and lets you transmute items through various Horadric Cube recipes.
Act IV
Quest 3: Terror’s End
Recommended Level: 30-32
If you already have the River of Flame Waypoint, use it to jump forward. Otherwise, head north through the River of Flame to eventually come across the Chaos Sanctuary. Diablo’s house is shaped like a cross, with three wings that you need to fight through to the north, east, and west. Each of these wings has one or two seals that you need to interact with. Be careful though as some of those seals will spawn a mini-boss and his minions. You need to click on all five seals and kill the three mini-bosses to spawn Diablo, so you might as well get started.
Each of the three mini-bosses presents its own problem, though the Grand Vizier of Chaos is generally thought to be the weakest. The Infector of Souls is often the toughest of the trio because reaching his seal puts you into something of a chokehold. Then, you’re attacked by extra fast demons who can cast Inferno. Without being able to use your mobility to your advantage, you can quickly die from their attacks. Lord de Seis is also pretty gnarly because he usually spawns with the Fanaticism aura, which increases the group’s damage and Seis’ attack speed and attack rating. Thankfully, they’re much slower than The Infector of Souls’ group, so you can run from them as needed.
All of them pale in comparison to Diablo himself. He has a host of abilities that can quickly take you out; however, on normal difficulty, you really want to watch out for the Red Lightning Hose. Some of this damage can be mitigated by fire and lightning resistance, so make sure to maximize those stats before taking him on. Thankfully, Diablo has a tell for this attack. Just before casting it, he’ll raise both hands into the air, giving you a split second to run past him and dodge out of the way.
One key piece of general advice is to drop a Town Portal in one of the three wings where you find seals. Diablo doesn’t really come to these locations, so you can use them with relative safety. Make heavy use of this as you’ll likely need to return to town a few times to refill potions. If you try to drop a TP in Diablo’s inner sanctum, he’ll use a bone prison on it and be able to attack you freely for a few seconds. Because you can’t heal during that time, you may die quickly. Just maximize your resistances, get as much blocking as possible, and pick your battles. Eventually, you’ll take him down.
With Diablo finished, grab your loot and head back to town. After speaking with Deckard Cain and Tyrael, you can walk through the portal to
Harrogath
and Act V.
