In 10.1.5, a series of dailies in Eon's Fringe takes us through time, correcting various anomalies in the timeways. The quests themselves have been a work in progress, with Blizzard announcing that some would be
adjusted or removed
after player feedback. One of the reworked quests is now available on the PTR - the quest deals with Alexstrasza and her captivity at the hands of the Dragonmaw.
A Mislaid Egg
In the quest offered by Chromie, we're sent to Dun Algaz, a stronghold occupied by the Dragonmaw Clan, to relocate a red dragon egg. The egg needs to be noticed by Rhonin, who will go on to help free Alexstrasza from her captivity.
Oh dear, this is a tricky one. We need you to relocate an egg to somewhere that Rhonin will be certain to notice it. It may sound odd, but his discovery of that egg sets into motion the events that will free Alexstrasza from the Old Hord--and save the egg, too!
We're sending you to Dun Algaz. It's not where any of this should be taking place, but time is like cheese right now. Tasty and full of holes.
Oh, and here's some sand. It'll help you be a bit more stealthy.
In the previous version of this quest, the player's task was to find the Demon Soul, which the Dragonmaw had lost, and return it. Since the Dragonmaw used the Demon Soul to enslave and torture Alexstrasza, forcing her to mate and lay eggs to help supply their red dragon mounts, it meant that players would feel complicit in one of the worst periods in World of Warcraft's history. Without changing any settled lore, this new version fundamentally changes the role that players are asked to play - instead of ensuring Alexstrasza's continued captivity, we now help ensure her release.
We return to find Alexstrasza standing with Chromie and Soridormi - Chromie seems flustered by the Dragon Queen's presence.
Did you get it in the right spot? What am I saying--of course you did, or we wouldn't be here!
When Alexstrasza was freed, it secured a victory at the Battle of Grim Batol. More importantly, she and the other Aspects forced Deathwing to beat a hasty retreat. If Rhonin hadn't located her. who knows what Deathwing would've accomplished?
<Chromie lowers her voice. glancing at Alexstrasza.>
She arrived just after you left--like she knew what we were doing!
After completing the quest, players can interact with Alexstrazsa, who seems to acknowledge she knows about your involvement in her release.
<Alexstrasza stares at you for a moment. then offers you the smallest of nods and a gentle smile. Perhaps your involvement in her escape didn't go as undetected as you'd planned. She says nothing--but her gratitude is clear.>
In many ways, the quest is not that different from its previous version. Both versions tackle the same lore, some of the darkest lore in World of Warcraft's story. In both, players do not change the timeline but rather make sure that the "true timeline" is preserved. In both, Alexstrasza is aware of what has been done. Everything that needed to be said by this questline is still being said, but while in the old version players felt forced into aiding Alexstrasza's abuse, now they get to help save her instead. The change is a good one that shows a direct acknowledgment and response to player feedback, and we welcome it.
