Hello! Welcome to the 245th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
This week we talk about changing perspectives in the current state of gold making and how Dragonflight Profession crafting is going to work as well as some nifty insights to help with using TSM.
My name is
Samadan
and I'll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!
Dragonflight Professions & How they Work
Manthieus
has put together a couple of really useful videos this week going through professions in Dragonflight, how they work and how reputation ties in.
In the first video, he talks about how crafting works with the different crafting levels and how it market is likely to play out...
This is of course still early stages yet, but it's obvious to see gold makers are going to be keen to make the most out of specific professions as soon as possible. Expect a LOT of number crunching over the next few months as players try to guess what will be the most in-demand items and how to be the first person to get there.
How important this is for the casual gold maker remains to be seen. I feel the market will be split between commodity items vs. more realm specific items. There is likely to be fierce competition over the commodity items and the early bird will certainly be able to eek out a profit. The more realm specific items like armour and weapons are going to be very much server dependent and those may have a greater chance of providing opportunities for longer.
In the second video, Manthieus talks more in-depth in
how reputations work
..
So there has been lots of talk about how reputations are going to be "friendlier" in Dragonflight but after some testing I can see that this is not an "equal for all" situation.
Today I published the first in a new series covering the new major factions in Dragonflight, The Dragonscale Expedition.
I wanted to take a deeper look into these new Factions as they hold many of the patterns crafters are going to be seeking once the game launches. I spent the weekend leveling it to max to get the best understanding I could.
Let me explain what I think Blizzard's logic is with reputations;
Renown levels are character specific and you will start at zero with each character. But all non-power gaining rewards will be unlocked for all toons. For example once, you have unlocked the Expedition Metal Detector on one character, there will no longer be the renown 21 requirement to purchase it on alts. Power gaining rewards will need to be unlocked on whichever character wishes to buy them. Examples of Power gaining rewards are all Armor, Weapons &
Profession Patterns.
While I was maybe slightly naïve to think that leveling a reputation on my main would grant my alt with a different professions access to unlocks "earnt" for that faction, It has at least proven to me that Professions are going to be a BIG investment from all angles.
Thoughts?
This does appear to strike a balance between keeping certain things behind a barrier to entry which is important from a progression point of view and prevents flooding a market while also allowing the casual player to avoid a grind for simpler cosmetics.
New Player Struggling to Understand the Economy
A common question many have when learning about gold making is how to make enough to buy a
WoW Token
with gold. This is often the gateway point of inspiration that leads many of us on a path of gold making as
u/Alejandro8092 asks
..
I recently started player and discovered that you can buy wow token using gold. I started looking on youtube many ways of getting gold, even installed Worthit addod and started farming some old mats. More specefically I farmed primal air and spirits of harmony. It was very successful the firts times, but then it became a nightmare to sell with all that bots in AH undercuting everything and lowering the price.
I'm so afraid I won't be able to reach 300k gold by the end of motnh because i have more than 150k gold on items but can't sell them, I always get undercut...
Also discovered that raw gold is no longer an option because everything is so nerfed to the point where 2k per horu would be insane to rech 300k...
WorthIt addon says I can make 9k gold/h but i got there and got nearly 100g, literally.
At this point I don't knwo what else to do, I don't want to rely on AH because I hate people there... but there is no other option, raw gold is dead as far as I see... Tried Heart of Fear LFR and got me around 1.5k per hour + spirits of harmony, but can't even sell them and have more than 150 spirits that are always being undercut.
Any suggestions on how to reach 300k or any raw gold still semi-viable?
Thankfully, the gold making community is generous in sharing their knowledge ...
Heres my two cents.
It takes a little time to understand the economy in wow. But most importantly, you need to understand that you will get burned out if you think everything will go the way the youtube videos tell you.
You need to enjoy the journey of making gold.
Adressing your points:
1.- Many items are sold region wide. So people with bots will take advantage of this. The motes will sell eventually but be patient.
2.- Doing callings everyday with multiple alts is great. You get better every day and invest alot less time in it.
3.- The bigger the realm, the bigger the competition. Check out some smaller realms to sell some profesion item that are not sold region wide.
Okay first off, and I cannot stress this enough, content creators are not making content to help you. They benefit from clicks and views, and you have clearly been led astray by outdated if not outright bad advice.
Next, stop dismissing everyone you don't like as a bot. You would be astounded at the time and energy people will spend for very little gold in this game, and your competition is far more likely to be many people doing the same thing you're doing at the same time you're doing it. Rant about hating people all you want, but you're doing a disservice to yourself by getting angry at people in a video game that are, again, doing the exact same thing you are.
The best raw gold "farm" right now is max level alts that plow through callings with ZM gear (be it the 229 greens, 226 BoAs, or whatever) and mission tables. You can easily pay your sub fee with this in NA, I don't claim to know anything about the EU token prices.
If you're going to go farm something, farm something people actually want. Ask yourself what materials are actually being used right now, and go get those - this typically means picking a shadowlands zone and doing laps picking herbs and mining. I honestly have no idea why people are still farming obscure elemental bits from expansions in ages past - The exception is if you're turning those region-wide commodities into something someone would actually want to buy on your realm ah, like a skygolem, etc.
As you've discovered, sell rate is just as important as sale price, and gathering materials with a high price but a low sell rate isn't going to make anyone rich.
Going to agree with the person here who mentions diversifying. You're talking about two methods of making gold, spirits of harmony, and raw gold in dungeons.
There are so many other methods / items - and you're going to have to learn what works for you, your attention span, and your server. You mention bots - there are lots of regular legit people who constantly post all day and they're not bots. Don't even make them a part of your equation. With region wide auction house you're going to be undercut almost immediately on every commodity anyway. It has nothing to do with bots. Post your items for the price you think is fair / you want for them and then forget about them.
If you're really out of ideas and are going to rely on YouTube videos, my suggestion is to make sure they're older but still relevant. The thing about those videos is that you're most certainly not the only person out there looking to make gold, and if you're doing the same thing as everyone else, that's not going to net you very much profit.
Guaranteed gold? Almost not even a thing for players who are new to gold making - except covenant tables, and daily covenant callings. It's easy gold for little time.
Speaking of time, take some to figure out what you enjoy doing. You'll be more likely to stick with it. Consistency is key. Spend some time on the oribos exchange and see what's being posted to your server, for what prices. See if there's a niche you can wiggle yourself into. Don't like crafting? Then don't do it. Prefer to spend your time in dungeons and raids? Then check out what transmog is missing from your server, and see if you can get RNG to work in your favour. I personally give each activity an hour or so and then move on to a new activity. Not because I have to, but because it's how I enjoy playing and that's how I keep things fresh. If you prefer to herb/mine/skin for 30+ hours to make your gold, then find out where supply / demand balance out and farm that. You don't have to be the cheapest, you just have to be able to find a demand for what you're trying to sell.
It takes time. There is no instant gold method unless you're buying tokens from the Blizzard store. Goblins who offer up advice have been doing this for a long time, learning the market, taking in data, and all the rest. Give yourself some patience and room to make mistakes. You're new, and we were all new once. Expecting a brand new player to the game who has never made gold to suddenly be buying a token their very first month with zero investment or knowledge about how to make gold is expecting a lot. It's not impossible, but it's a lot.
The advice here is all really good in delving deeper into the ways of gold making. We may at first look at "easy" farms and ways to spend time hunting down things to sell, but then as we learn more and try different things the possibilities bloom as far as one is willing to learn.
The journey is long, you might as well enjoy it along the way!
Guide to Using TSM to Filter Groups of Items
From beginners to more advanced niches of gold making,
u/Woorah
has put together a fantastic guide to one of the lesser known aspects of TSM and how it can be used to filter out items not worth pursuing..
Given many of the recent changes to the auction house, scanning large groups of items for potential deals using TSM can be a frustrating exercise with throttling making scans of 100+ items incredibly slow.
Many people will therefore manually go through their shopping lists and strip out items they feel are not worth the time scanning for - carefully inspecting the tooltip for each item to decide whether to include or exclude it from the search.
For me - in order to make my scan groups more focussed specifically on the items I feel have the best possible returns, I like to use TSM's inbuilt functionality to filter out items with lower sales rate or sale values - breaking searches into more manageable chunks.
I find these tools extremely useful, but I don't think many people are currently aware they even exist, so I put together a bit of a guide (with a worked example) of how you can use these filters to narrow down or refine your own lists/groups of items to scan for when you are hunting out deals.
Hopefully some people find it useful.

This is a very useful method for filtering out potentially good items from the thousands that are available in WoW, thankyou Woorah for sharing!
How to Get into Flipping on the New Auction House
Zanzarful
has put together a great guide to explain how flipping can still be viable in the modern combined auction house with advice on what to look out for and the thinking behind it.
What's great about this video is that it shows how learning more and more about what an item is used for, why people buy it and the other items connected along the chain can help reduce the risk of an investment and help steer the player towards making the most of the materials.
