When you max out your fishing you can eventually be able to catch stonescale eels which are used for stonescale oil. The oil is used as a reagent for Flask of Petrification, Flask of the Titans, and Greater Stoneshield Potion which means they sell for alot because raid guilds use thes alot for dungeons.

Very useful to get when you need to get the fish for the ZG fish boss. it goes so much faster if everybody has the fishing skill up.

As of the current patch (2.1.3), I've been finding that the bobber vanishes instantly once the 20 second fishing timer is up. This currently seems to mean that if the bobber triggers in approximately the last second of fishing & you click then, you won't get the fish.

You can get around this by simply clicking on the bobber once the timer reaches ~1.5 seconds left, irrespective of whether the bobber has triggered or not. You'll still catch the fish - assuming your skill is high enough - and you avoid the risk of running out of time.

It helps to have a bar add-on (I use Bongos2) that has a casting bar that shows the actual seconds as a number. I suggest moving the casting bar to the center of the screen right above the water line so it is easy to see with the bobber. You should move your character so that they are mostly submerged in the water (but not swimming) and angled so that no casts will go onto land or shallow water. You should also zoom in so you are looking 1st person.

Fishing it is like channeling a spell, counting down from 20 seconds to 0 seconds.

There are 3 opportunities during that 20 seconds that the bobber will bounce and you can catch a fish.

Counting down from 20 seconds:

1) At 11.0 – 10.0 seconds remaining.
2) At 6.0 – 5.0 seconds remaining.
3) At 1.1 seconds remaining.

My guess on these is that:
30% of the casts it will be at 11.0 – 10.0 seconds.
30% of the casts it will be at 6.0 – 5.0 seconds.
40% of the casts it will be at 1.1 seconds.

This makes it slightly easier on the wrist and eyes while fishing. There is sufficient time to start by clicking your line and placing the cursor on the bobber and then let go of the mouse and stretch your arm for a few seconds before the first opportunity that the bobber will move.

If it does not move by 10 seconds you can relax for a few seconds again (keep your hand on the mouse this time) and wait for 6.0 seconds.

If the bobber does not move by 5.0 seconds remaining then you can stop looking at the bobber and instead concentrate on the casting bar. As soon as it hits 1.1 seconds remaining click and you should catch the fish.

Patch 2.3 will include the ability for players to track fishing nodes similar to Tracking Mines and Herbs. The ability will be learned from a journal that can be found in fished-up crates.

Fishing is a great solution for a hunters who have just tamed a new pet and want to get him loyality lvls fast.
Thats how i got my ravager from lvl1 to 3 in 4 hours. I suggest fishing in Barrens oasis. You'll not only get ur pets loyality but also Deviate Fish :)

So I started fishing in preparation of WoLK, as well as a lot of things (ie 18 slot bag farming, herbalism, etc)

Asked around my guild and trade, everyone seemed to say that as skill level goes up, so does number of casts to earn a skill up. Although I've heard you can get up to 375 in Stormwind, This made no sense so i put it to the tests.

In between 150-200, went to SW, Southshore, Booty Bay, and Western Plaguelands.
WPL is easy, wasn't able to fish except with 75 lure, after 4 failed attempts went back to Southshore, then SW for the test at skill 193.

Other than that, it seemed to take 3 cast per level without only one exception: If I was able to fish in the zone w/o a lure and get 100% catch rate, and I applied a lure, the skill-up rate went up to 3 to 4 catches before skill up.

So in the end, unless you're in it for auction house sales or vendor sales (wouldn't cover cost of flight), just stick with Stormwind and use a lure until you don't need it, maybe skill lvl 40.

Guess this is the only profession that doesn't have orange or yellow levels, just red (can't do) and green (might grant skill-up).

Fishing can actually be very profitable at level 70, done right. First thing's first though; every aspiring fishmonger needs to know his fish.

First off, we have the "normal fish", which is Barbed Gill Trout. If you fish outside of a school, in open water, chances are you'll pull up these. It's pretty much just edible vendor trash, since it doesn't give a "Well Fed" buff.

If you fish in Hellfire Peninsula or Shadowmoon Valley, you'll pull up a lot of Felblood Snapper, which are completely worthless. In addition, there are no schools in either of these zones. Bottom line: don't fish in Hellfire or SMV.

Next, we have the "buff fish", that give "Well Fed" buffs after cooking. You can sell these on the AH for a good profit.
Zangarian Sporefish cooks into Blackened Sporefish. It's the best mana per 5 buff in game, so it's in demand for raids.
Golden Darter cooks into Golden Fish Sticks. This is the highest +healing food buff in game, so again, raids will be loving them. It's one of the more profitable fish, actually.
Furious Crawdad cooks into Spicy Crawdad. Yep, raiders. This ties for the highest +stamina food in game.
Icefin Bluefish cooks into Poached Bluefish. There's at least two more food buffs with the same effect and are more easily obtainable, but you can still turn a non-insignificant profit with these, for those (yep) raiders who don't feel like farming their own food.
Figluster's Mudfish cooks into Grilled Mudfish. The other +agi food is Warp Burgers, but those can be a pain to farm off Warp Stalkers, so these will still sell most of the time.

In addition, there are two "bonus" fish. These have a small chance to be fished when you fish anywhere, no matter in a school or in open water. These are:

Enormous Barbed Gill Trout cooks into Hot Buttered Trout x2. These aren't too great, really, since the food is the same as a mage's mana biscuits, which anyone can get. You're better off vendoring the fish themselves if you're looking to squeeze every last drop of profit out of this. Or you can just keep them around for kicks.
Huge Spotted Feltail cooks into Fisherman's Feast x6. This is what Spicy Crawdad ties with for highest +stamina, and you can sell them for a similar profit. Plus, you get 6 per cooking.

There are also container items that can be fished, similar to the trunks you could get pre-BC. These are a random chance to be fished anywhere, in a school or in open water. They are:
Curious Crate - Contains either 1-3 Fel Iron Ore, 1-3 Netherweave Cloth, or 3-6 Knothide Leather Scraps. These things aren't really great, especially when you get them out of a school in place of a more valuable fish. The only thing you can really sell for a decent amount is the Fel Iron Ore, which might sell for over 1 gold apiece.
Inscribed Scrollcase - Contains 1-3 of any type of scroll. Scrolls of Stamina, Intellect, and Spirit are worthless, since they don't stack with raid buffs. Scrolls of Agility, Strength, and Protection, on the other hand, auction for a decent amount.

There's one more fish that doesn't quite fit under any of these categories: Goldenscale Vendorfish. While it is vendor trash, it is very valuable vendor trash, selling for 6 gold a fish. If you fish up one of these, just chuckle to yourself and know that you've just gotten 6 free gold. It's a small chance to get them anywhere; there aren't any vendorfish schools.

Okay, now that you know what you'll be fishing up, it's time to look at where to actually go to make some money. As I mentioned before, don't go to Hellfire or Shadowmoon. Netherstorm, while possible to fish in (the Eco-domes), isn't especially great either. I don't even think there are any bodies of water in Blade's Edge.

That leaves three options: Zangarmarsh, Nagrand, and Terokkar Forest.

Note that Find Fish helps immensely with finding the schools. It can be learned from Weather-Beaten Journal, which is a random drop out of any container received from fishing, no matter what level, except for scrollcases. You can in theory obtain this from a container as low level as Tightly Sealed Trunk.

That said, let's start with...

Zangarmarsh
Schools: Sporefish School, Brackish Mixed School, Steam Pump Flotsam.
Mobs to clear: most of the time, none. Occasionally a level 62-64 naga might aggro on you, but they're easily taken care of.

The main fish you'll be getting here are Zangarian Sporefish and Golden Darter, both of which can be quite profitable. Sporefish are fished out of, well, sporefish schools, while Golden Darter can be fished out of Brackish Mixed Schools.

You'll also get another kind of fish out of the mixed schools: Spotted Feltail, which I did not include earlier because it's a bit strange. While the cooking does give it a food buff, Fisherman's Feast and Spicy Crawdad are both better than it, so it doesn't sell very well. It's up to you what to do with them - sell them on AH for a little, or keep them for yourselves.

There are a couple possible routes here. You can fly around the coast of Umbrafen Lake and the Lagoon, in a route I've (sort of) outlined here. This is a pretty good route, with lots of school spawns. The skill required for no get-aways is 400, which means that with a good lure you can start fishing here a while before 375 fishing skill. You could also make circles around Serpent Lake, like this. Required skill for no get-aways is 450 here, and also in Marshlight Lake. I find that Marshlight Lake isn't as good as either of these routes, so I just tend to these two.

Steam Pump Flotsam is a nice bonus for fishing in Zangarmarsh. It spawns as a school, similar to Floating Wreckage in the pre-TBC zones. Fishing in it will yield one of a few things. Steam Pump Debris is what you'll get most of the time. Though gray, it vendors for 50s a piece, which isn't bad considering you'll pull up probably 2 or 3 of them a school. You may also get a Heavy Supply Crate. This contains Engineering parts, which may or may not auction well depending on your server.

Zangarmarsh bottom line...
Pros: low skill level, lots of schools with fast respawn time, profitable fish.
Cons: Spotted Feltail aren't great. Hissing sound from the steam pumps can get really annoying...

Moving on...

Terokkar Forest
Schools: School of Darter, Brackish Mixed School, Highland Mixed School
Mobs to clear: most of the time, nothing. In Skettis ONLY, one level 70-71 water elemental usually, possibly a level 70-71 arakkoa, plus avoiding or killing the patrolling 72 elite giant tree.

What you'll be getting here is lots and lots of Golden Darter! On ground level, in addition to fishing the darter out of School of Darter, the Brackish Mixed Schools also appear here, giving more darter, though also a few Spotted Feltail. Here is a decent path for finding Schools of Darter and Brackish Mixed Schools. The cutoff for no get-aways here I'd estimate is 450, so you'll need to be fairly close to max skill to fish most efficiently.

At 375 fishing, another possibility opens up in Terokkar: the Highland Mixed Schools. These only spawn in lakes at quite high elevations, only accessible with a flying mount. They require 500 fishing for no get-aways, so with 375 base skill, a +100 lure, and +25 skill through some combination of rod, line, hat, or enchant, you can fish without get-aways. What makes these so special? Well, for one thing, they're the only schools that you can fish Furious Crawdad out of. You may also fish Golden Darter out of these, though less commonly than the Crawdads. For another thing, you might also fish Mr. Pinchy out of a Highland Mixed School! While I won't go into detail about him here (check the comments on his page for more info), it's a very nice surprise to get one.

There are 3 places where Highland Mixed Schools might spawn - Lake Jorune (near Stonebreaker), Lake Ere'Noru (near Allerian), and Blackwind Lake (Skettis). I've plotted the route that I use to check all of these spots. As you can see, I fly from Jorune, over Ere'Noru, to Blackwind, circle around, then fly back over Ere'Noru again, back to Jorune.

Terokkar bottom line...
Pros: Golden Darter is possibly the most profitable fish. No mobs aggro in most spots.
Cons: Ground level schools are a bit spread. Highland Mixed Schools need high skill, and are also spread.

Nagrand
Schools: Mudfish School, Bluefish School, Pure Water
Mobs to clear: Usually nothing, occasionally a level 65-67 water elemental. Elemental Plateau: a couple level 70-71 water elementals.

The entire zone requires near 500 fishing to have no get-aways, but I've been able to do with 475 effective skill for ground level fishing, with get-aways very rare. The fish you'll be getting are Icefin Bluefish out of Bluefish Schools, and Figluster's Mudfish out of Mudfish Schools, both of which auction pretty well but not as great as, well, Golden Darter. They're still quite profitable though. The two lakes here are Sunspring Lake, west of Halaa, and Skysong Lake, right by Garadar. Schools can also spawn in the rivers between them.

The big bonus about fishing in Nagrand is Pure Water. You'll be able to identify these easily, as they're essentially a patch of super bright water. Fishing in one will give you 1-2 Motes of Water per catch! They spawn fairly regularly along with the normal schools, so they're not especially rare. There are also a few spawn points up at the lake in the Elemental Plateau, if you want to check that every so often. Here's the route that I use here, though I skip the Plateau if I've just fished out some Pure Water there the circle before.

Nagrand bottom line...
Pros: Fish are fairly profitable, no Spotted Feltail, Pure Water!
Cons: High skill level needed. Mobs can get in your way at Elemental Plateau.

That's pretty much all I have to say about that, so have fun fishing!

If all you are wanting to do is level up fishing and do not need specific fish for cooking, there is a very easy way to do this.

Fish in Orgimmar or Stormwind while you are waiting for PvP queues!

You can max out your fishing skill from any fishable water. Fishing in a higher level area does not make you skill up faster, your skill level increases at the same rate regardless of what or where you are fishing.

Fishing Skill-Ups are based off a simple, standard formula and not location of where you are fishing. It makes no difference if you're in Orgrimmar/Stormwind or Borean Tundra/Howling Fjord. Heres the formula:

/25 = Number of Successful Catches per next point.

* - Your current fishing skill, before lures and the likes.

I was thinking about it, and since I haven't seen anyone else post something to the below affect. I came up with a different use for a throwing macro that I have. With the below macro, I can fight when I have a weapon equipped; or fish when I have the fishing pole equipped.

I'm a Sub-Rogue and Hemo is my main attack. The line with "/use Forsight's Anticipation" is only there to show you can also add your trinkets on use abilities. Please feel free to add or remove the "/use *trinket*" line if unneeded by you.

/use Foresight's Anticipation

I don't know who came up with the original macro concept, thanks go to him/her. I just used it in the above fashion cause I get tired of adding/removing/clicking/searching for/swapping the "Fishing" talent whenever I fish, get attempted ganked while fishing, or have mobs trained on me while fishing. Just equip my weapons and I'm ready to kill you.

*edit: Forgot to add - When you make the macro use the "?" (question mark) icon. Using that icon and placing the "#Showtooltip" line will show what you have equipped on the attack button. eg.: If you have your fishing pole equipped, the fishing icon will display. If you have a weapon equipped, the chosen attack will display.

If you get a +100 lure, you only need around 280 to get Glacial Salmon from Wintergrasp.

It makes Fish Feasts, you want it.
