You must kill him quickly to get over his heals. I like using a Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling: it is resistant to magic attacks and has Dragon Breath, which is very good against magic pets.
When his health is below the base damage of your Explode, just sacrifice your dragonling.

This pet is so overpowered it is unbelievable. He can block all damage every third turn, then heal himself for 45% of his health every third or fourth turn. His "weak" hits do 300-400 damage and many of his attacks are frequently criticals. The term "fair fight" does not apply to Spirus. If you have used a pet besides the Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling or Scourged Whelpling, please post what you did that worked. I've tried everything in my arsenal, both dragons and mechanicals. The dragons are screwed because the preceding pet, Carpe Diem, uses an aquatic attack-all-three-pets breath that takes my dragons down between 40-60% health before they even have a chance to fight. I can't heal them fast enough to compensate for Spirus' attacks, and his block/heal combo is ridiculous. I get him down to 50% health, and next turn, he is back at 90-95% health again! The mechanicals fare better against Carpe Diem, but can't damage Spirus fast enough before he blocks-and-heals. I really, REALLY hate this pet.
