blizz should add a new meta-achievement, called "it was all merely a set back"
gained when you defeat bosses that make come-backs
the bosses would be kael'tas on both the eye and magister terrace.
and anu'barak both on azjol'nerub and ToTC
Baron Rivendare on Stratholme and on Naxx.
and valanar when doing the quest Last rites (alliance) or breaking trough (horde) and killing valanar on ICC.
when killing keleseth both on utgarde keep and ICC
and when kiling taladran on Ank'anet and ICC
the achievement could reward something goofie like a mini kael'tas pet, or the title "The Smug" (as a reference of "don't look so smug" line spoken by kael'tas)

Seeing that in the Burning Crusade, Kael'thas was revived by the Fel Energy.
In Wrath of the Lich King, the three Blood Princes were revived by necromancy
I bet in Cataclysm, Blood elves are going to be revived by some kind of twilight energy.
Ladies and Gentlemen, time to predict numerous setbacks to prepare for them!
edit: Cmon guys, its only short theorycrafting, after all the Twilight Hammer is coming in cata and there will be alot of elements involved..

From WoWwiki
"This is a long one phase encounter. You will need one ranged tank and two regular tanks.
Invocation of Blood will randomly buff one of the Blood Princes and only that Prince will have a health bar to DPS. The other Princes will have 1 HP and attacking them will have no effect. Invocation of blood switches between princes throughout the encounter and DPS must switch with it. Prince Valanar will be the first Prince with Invocation of Blood.
A properly specced Warlock will be the most useful class for tanking Prince Keleseth. Dark Nucleii will spawn in the room around Keleseth and the Warlock must get aggro on them and stand near them. They will give the Warlock a stacking debuff that reduces shadow damage taken, allowing the warlock to survive Empowered Shadow Lance which is cast when Keleseth gains Invocation of Blood. Dark Nucleii should not be hit too hard and also destroy themselves over time, neccesitating finding more to keep the shadow resonance buff up.
Prince Valanar will use Kinetic Bombs which can be targetted and attacked to bounce them higher in the air and prevent them from exploding. He puts shock vortexes on random raid members which knock both them and any nearby raid members back 50 yards. When he gains Invocation of Blood he casts Empowered Shock Vortex which creates a shock vortex on top of every player within 30 yards, melee will need to scatter and get away from him.
Prince Taldaram will do a frontal cone fire attack and conjure balls of flame which follow a random raid member and do less damage the longer they are kited, minimum 10,000 damage. With Invocation of Blood he will launch Empowered Balls of Flame which do a huge amount of damage on impact and lesser damage to nearby targets along the way, doing less impact damage depending on how many players were hit while the ball was in flight. OUT OF DATE. This post was from before the encounter was released. The replies, however, are relevant.
QUESTIONS & SPECULATION:
I have many questions concerning tanking Keltheras, all questions stemming down to the Dark Nuclei mechanics.
It's clear that they have regular aggro tables that respond to heals and DPS. They appear to only give
Shadow Resonance
to their current target. In a video I saw one wander aimlessly while changing targets (not pursuing), until it was close enough to a player (looked like about 15-20 yards) then started pursuing him. I assume that player was then granted the Resonance buff because of the dark purple beam connecting the Nucleus and its target, which appeared as soon as it started heading towards the player.
In that same video I saw that the buff stacks, making 2 stacks equal a theorized 70%, which is what it looks like in the vid. 70% shadow damage mitigation would make consecutive 90k
Empowered Shadow Lances
borderline manageable for a tank (keeping ranged tanks in mind) with heavy mitigation talents getting loads of healing.
The warrior tanking Kel in the video made it from the beginning of the fight until Kel became empowered with no Resonances, then grabbed aggro of 1 then 2 Nuclei, and seemed to be getting by just fine. But then it looked like he got hit by a
Kinetic Bomb
and got knocked back, at which point he lost aggro of the 2 Nuclei, whether from an unknown range mechanic with the Nuclei or from heal aggro I'm not sure. He then took an unmmitigated Empowered Shadow Lance, bringing him down to about 20% health, then took another immediately and died. Why did he not die from that supposed 90k hit, and manage to have tanked with only 1 stack for about 15 sec before that?
One more thing I'd like to ask is what happens if Kel is the first to be empowered? Does he immediately start casting massive Empowered Shadow Lances before any Nuclei are out to mitigate the damage?
One more thing I'd like to ask is if the Nuclei die over time like
Collapsing Stars
or on timers. Depending on their health I don't want to kill them while trying to hold aggro, since healers will be producing a lot of threat.
I can only hope that some of these questions are answered before tonight, as I need to spec my warlock for tanking and need to decide on damage mitigation vs threat generation, and so far the mechanics don't seem to add up.
THEORYCRAFTING FOR TANKING:
What I have in mind for lock tanking is
glyphed
Soul Link
,
Molten Skin
,
Nether Protection
,
Master Demonologist
with a Felhunter. In terms of keeping aggro I'm thinking of popping a
glyphed
,
talented
Searing Pain
on wandering Nuclei, or possibly spec deep Demonology for the special
Metamorphosis
spells, which would allow me to
Taunt
all targets within 10 yards, pop
Immolation Aura
and use
Shadow Cleaves
to maintain aggro, assuming they have enough health to endure the heavy damage required to keep 100% aggro on all of them. When faced with the knockback problem of that of the warrior in the video, I'd use
Demon Charge
to get back in quickly, or alternatively
Demonic Circle
. Unfortunately the cooldown of the Metamorphosis spell is 3 min (2.1 min
talented
), so it would only work every two Keleseth phases. The peculiar thing is the uptime being 40 sec, which is precisely the same duration as Kel's empowerment phase, and the abilities are uncannily well-suited for the situation. As much as I'd like the Metamorphosis theory to be true, I think the Demo/Destro hybrid might be better suited if the encounter demands better survivability. But I'll repeat that all these things are speculative, and I may be inaccurately stressing the importance of damage mitigation or threat generation or both, and the fight might simply come down to avoiding balls of flame for all I know. I'll post more tonight when more is known!

I noticed something funny, this guy is a boss level mob in regular UK. I'm not sure about Heroic UK, but there's a bit of a bug going on there. I'm hit capped as my arcane spec, so I don't miss bosses, so I wouldn't know if Taldaram in OK is boss level either.

hopefully they fix it because that fight isn't fun on regular q.q
He's even listed on WoWhead as being bosslevel in UK, while the other two are not.

I successfully tanked this guy yesterday as a hunter. I wore my relentless PvP gear and was even given a tanking flask, which brought me to a bangin' 43,5k hp. If you survive the initial spike damage at the start, the damage should not be overwhelming at any point granted you get lots of orbs. We had people bring them to me, though that was a little unnecessary for a hunter. If anything, you'll be unable to even target the orbs if they're too close to you! If marksmanship specced, you'll also be able to use deterrence like 4 times during the encounter if need be, giving full deflects. No need for warlocks here! :P

My 25 group successfully tanked this boss with a warrior tank. He was able to use warrior abilities (Charge, Intercept) to reach orbs quickly. Hunters kept Misdirect on him, and when Keleseth was empowered we told people to watch their threat and even stop DPSing if they risked pulling aggro. Overall, while the warrior was of course slower to pick up orbs than a ranged tank would be, keeping him alive was easier.

for those groups that don't have a warlock or something, here is a strategy that worked for my group, we ended up having one tank on both Taldaram and Valanar, and the other on Kelaseth, this allowed the tank to be able to eat the empowered shadow lance with only 2 stacks of the shadow resist buff(no achievement though :(). we also found that if you happen to have 3 classes with permanent pets you can just assign the pets to keep the kinetic orbs up, so you wont lose anyone to keeping those things taken care of. we found having the tanks with 2 bosses on them in the center allowed for much more movement of the healers without having to worry about getting to close to ranged dps.
a few things to note however, the tank with Taldaram and valanar will be taking a lot of damage, each melee for about 13-15k every 2 seconds or so. if your group only uses 2 healers this might not work to well as there is a lot of damage going out to the tanks and the raid, and with everyone moving a lot range might be a problem
note we did this on 10 man

My guild successfully downed the Blood Princes on 25-man today on our 4(~) attempt with a Unholy/Blood DK tank. Wasn't too difficult once we got people to understand not to AoE or dot up the Nuclei. It was much easier from a tanking standpoint having a tank with nearly 50k hp, rather than 35k. You can see his spec here:

Cheers!
EDIT: Sorry, should mention that the DK tank was on Keleseth :D

guide for warlocks tanking this fight
so, your guild's asked you to tank
Keleseth
in the Blood Prince Council encounter in ICC?
here's a quick guide to give you an idea of what to do.
firstly, anyone can tank this encounter but warlocks
do
have several abilities that make them well suited to the task.
we have:
damage reduction
increased healing
threat on demand
DoTs spells
just as any class
can
tank Keleseth but warlocks do it best, any warlock spec
can
tank this but demo and destro are best, and preferably the destro build should have soul link in it (0/18/53). no special build or gear is required for this job, PvE specs and gear work perfectly well.
Damage Reduction
damage reduction comes in the form of
soul link
. damage is shared with your pet so your pet will need a little healing attention. demo locks should use a Felhunter (due to further spell damage reduction via
master demonologist
) and other specs should use a Voidwalker (for his higher health pool and bubble).
Increased Healing
increased healing taken comes from
demon armour
which should be used instead of the usual fel armour, not for the armour increase but for the increased healing taken (which is boosted further by
demonic aegis
).
Threat
for threat warlocks have
searing pain
it does twice as much threat as it does damage (unlike most of our spells that have a 1:1 ratio) and is a nice quick cast, not suffering much from push-back. deep demo lock may find they can get more threat by using soul fire due to constant decimation procs while Keleseth is not empowered. i tend to find that it is still a long enough cast to struggle with push-back.
Encounter Mechanics
each of the 3 bosses in this encounter will become empowered. this always starts with valanar and is random from then on. when keleseth (your target) becomes empowered he will one shot you even with the damage reduction we warlocks have.
how do we prevent this?
by agroing the
dark nuclei
that spawn throughout the encounter.
each dark nucleus that has agro on you gives a stacking debuff,
shadow resonance
, that does a small amount of DoT damage but also reduces the shadow damage you take by 35%. these stack multiplicatively, not additively so with three stacks you still take 27% shadow damage, four stacks 18% down to 5% at seven stacks.
the key to surviving Keleseth's empowered phase is stacking several dark nuclei throughout. three should be considered the minimum.
so, why did i mention DoTs?
the dark nuclei don't have agro tables like most mobs. they simply attack the last player who landed a damaging attack on them. as such it doesn't matter how much damage you do or threat you generate you can always have them pulled off you by the DPSers AoEs. spells like consecrate are particularly dangerous since they're AoEs spells and continue to tick making it very difficult to reclaim an add you lose to a paladin. also, since threat doesn't matter, abilities like misdirect and tricks of the trade can not send mobs to you. the hunter or rogue will get them.
the way to get and keep a dark nucleus is to use a DoT. the best DoT for the job is
curse of agony
. it ticks every 2 seconds instead of 3 like most DoTs and lasts 24 seconds, longer than any other.
using rank 1 CoA will ensure that you keep the add on you without any chance of you killing it before it despawns. they have quite a lot of health so this is unlikely but worth bearing in mind.
The Fight
so you're set up before the fight with a soul link spec, demon armour on and a Fulhunter or Voidwalker out? now the actual fight is pretty easy.
at the start put
CoE
on Keleseth and spam searing pain for threat. as dark nuclei spawn go and put a CoA on them and return to searing pain on Keleseth (i usually focus target him so i can re-target easily during the fight).
when he becomes empowered you should have a healthy threat lead and your priority is to get more than 3 dark nuclei and keep them. getting lots more than 3 is fine even up to 7. if CoA is starting to run out on dark nuclei you've had for a while you can cast
shadowflame
to provide an AoE DoT on all the adds you currently have.
keep in range of your healers and avoid the various knockbacks and AoEs in the fight and this is an easy encounter. if you keep more than 3 stacks at all times you should also get the
orb
whisperer
achievement.
good luck and i hope this helped!

As a resto shaman who was dedicated to healing the ranged tank someone gave me some advice and I figured it would be fine to post here: When the ranged tank was at fine health and Keleseth isn't empowered I was running around Wind Shearing the orbs and dragging them back to the ranged tank. The ranged tanks have a tough job, so helping them when you can is nice.

My guild downed the Princes on 25M last night. We had some hiccups with the setup and trying to use a Paladin or DK tank (they can do it, but it's harder for them to grab and hold the nuclei). Fortunately, those attempts allowed the rest of the raid to get a hold of the mechanics/gimmicks of the fight. Once we decided to try a warlock tank (myself), we one-shotted it and got the achievement in the process. We also had a DK tank pick up Keleseth which allowed me some freedom to make sure I had the required 3 orbs should Keleseth get Empowered on the first switch. The DK tank then let go and kept busy by picking up Orbs on the far side of the room and kiting them to me. I could only cover about half the room without an unnecessary amount of movement. Doing this, I dont think I ever had less than 5 orbs on me for the rest of the fight.
I used my cookie-cutter PvE 0/56/15 Demo build with the Felhunter and Demon Armor on. Rank 1 Corruption or Curse of Agony is great for holding adds as it will keep them on you without killing them before they despawn. I switched to my PvP gear for the extra Stamina, but it wasn't really necessary as Empowered Shadow Lance doesn't hit very hard with 5 orbs on. Besides, a full PvP set can drop you way below hit cap and cause threat issues when the DPS are attacking Keleseth.
I strongly recommend either 1) making a macro for Searing Pain to cast only on Keleseth or 2) set him as your focus target. Visibility, and therefore targeting, becomes an issue with 5 or 6 orbs on. Be prepared to feel like the balloon vendor at the Mall Food Court.

Keleseth was changed slightly in the latest mini-patch (at least on 10-man.) Instead of immediately casting Shadow Lance on the first person to aggro the Council, he stands still in a mock-casting pose for 2-3 seconds, giving you enough time to pick him up if you are his tank and preventing him from adding unexpected damage to the Valanar or Taldaram tank on the pull.

Tanked him as a hunter on 10 man and thought I would share a few tips.
Don't bother with any special shadow protection gear, it won't help. I was lucky enough to have a couple of the Brewfest trinkets and I used PVP bracers as I could use the leatherworker emboss. With this gear and a tank flask I was around 40k health. One healer was assigned just for me due to the constant damage you will take.
I made Keleseth my focus as he is hard to find otherwise in the confusion. Forget about helping out with the dps on other bosses, just tank him. I pulled him with Distracting shot and then Kill shot. Serpent Sting is good for pulling orbs as it is a dot.
Don't worry about maintaining aggro on him when he becomes empowered, it seemed that the inital kill shots were enough to maintain aggro along with the occasional shot at him over the course of the event.
You will spend all your time chasing orbs, ideally you will need 5/6 of these. Don't worry about getting too many as there are not enough up for that! Remember they only last about 1 minute.
You might lose an orb to a healer so be prepared to grab it back as you charge around the room, with Keleseth following you!
Basically ignore your dps instincts to kill something and just concentrate on gathering orbs, this will take up all your time as they spawn all over the room. Even when he is empowered and you can damage him remember gathering orbs is the priority because is you die it's a wipe.

Death Knight is ideal for tanking Keleseth.
Proceed by chopping Keleseth with Death Strikes to get your four Death Runes. Icy Touch spam Keleseth and use the Runic Power generated to fire one death coil at each orb that pops up. (or IT the orbs if you don't have the runic power.)
I was always able to keep myself at 5-6 orbs as well as help out on Kinetic Bombs if people were slow. Because of the buff to Icy Touch spamming, you will never have to worry about others pulling aggro if you did it correctly.
This was before the massive talent tree overhaul. Icy slam no longer happens so you're stuck trying to gain aggro through heart strikes and hoping you're not killing too many orbs doing that.
