General Vezax has an Aura of Despair ability (

) that prevents mana regeneration and slows melee attack speed.
Vezax will spawn Saronite Crystals, you can decide to let them fly over the room or destroy them. If these crystals are destroyed they drop a green cloud on the ground, this will let you restore your mana at the expense of your health. (1000 Mana restored = 1000 Damage). The mana regeneration buff stacks and will regenerate more mana (and deal more damage as well) over time.
After Vezax spawns the 8th Saronite Crystal the Saronite Animuls will spawn, this is an add with 8,000,000 Health Points. It will repeatedly cast Profound Darkness

Vezax also casts an AoE Searing Flames that MUST be interrupted every time (even in the bubble, if you're doing hard mode). It does decent AoE damage to your whole raid. More importantly, the Flame will reduce your armor by 75%, which almost guarantees a tank death unless you blow a lot of cooldowns.
It's a 2-second cast, and melee should be charged with interrupts so casters don't have to waste their precious mana. However, during the kiting phase, ranged interrupts might be necessary if melee can't keep on him.

Anyone else having a problem with him not being slow during the supposed kite phase? Try as I might even moving away the second I saw it and switching into unholy presence for the extra speed I was unable to stay ahead of him.
I ended up blowing my cooldowns on 10 man in order to live through his hits :-/

Just did this for a couple hours in 10man, and noticed that Saronite vapors would sometimes not give the buff to restore mana if a shadow crash was on it as well. While it doesn't happen everytime, you can't use saronite vapors for full effect if a shadow crash happens to target someone using one, which is imperative to the fight.

Major changes to several bosses in 3.1.2, here are the Vezax changes.
* Shadow Crash now reduces mana costs to spellcasters by 70%. (Old - reduced mana costs for everyone, possibly a wording change to clarify that it only affects mana and not rage/energy/etc..)
* Profound Darkness now inflicts 750 damage to all enemies, and increases Shadow damage taken by 10% per application. (Up from 500 damage)

At least on early attempts, it might be easier to avoid kiting at all since it requires most of the raid to move AND keep apart from each other AND avoid Shadowcrash / Vapors AND be in range for healing tank / DPSing and interrupting boss. To do this, you need a sufficiently geared DK tank, who has at least 540ish Defense just from his armor alone. He then has to:
1) Put Rune of Stoneskin Gargoyle on his weapon (another 25 Defense)
2) Use Sigil of Unfalthering Knight (+10 Defense)
3) Preferably also have Glyph of Icebound Fortitude.
This way he can simply pop IBF during Surge (both skills have 1min CD) and (almost) completely negate the effect. No need to kite .Makes everything a lot easier.

Do the shadow crash vapors effect hunters? If so is it via reduced mana costs of their spells, increased damage of their spells be it either physical or simply spell damage ones like Explosive Shot, Black Arrow, Chimera Shot, Wild Quiver? Or do both the reduced mana costs/spell damage effect it?

We found with a well gear frost DK we didn't have to move him at all, just heal through it. We had 7 healers - no real problems.
The essential part is interupting. We had 2 warriors, 2 rogues and of course the DK tank - just work out a rotation and you shouldn't get hit.
It went a LOT better on 25man than I thought it would having failed to get past this boss on 10man, and never getting below about 50%.
Although we didn't kill him, we got him to below 20% 3-4 times, and as low as 13%. I am sure he will be down this reset.
1 thing you should know is the clouds that give you mana back are not infinite. There is a set number, so if you use them all up you are...well... buggered :P
I would say keep 1 open at a time with maybe 30secs apart before you open another.
I would say also DPS casters should liberally use haste potions when in the *black clouds* and go easy on DPS when outside to conserve your mana. Blow all cooldowns when in a black cloud to crank out as much DPS as possible.

kiting it around, has a slight learning curve but has the benefit of saving healers mana
most of our wipes on this boss were due to tank death, if your succesfully kiting him its less time he can 2 shot you
as for what class kites best im not sure, a warrior can intervene away from the boss, a dk has unholy pressence for 15% movement speed, a pala can spec into 15% speed
and a druid, well if he wants to risk it he can go kitty for 30%speed and sprint

Killed him today on 25 man and if you know the tacts it is just easy.
My guild did it like this:
Tank kites him overtime away from the adds so healers can regenerate their mana, we did it in 2 groups, if group 1 regenerate mana themselves then group 2 needs to heal the raid, group 2 regenerate mana, then group 1 raid heals, and so on.
The dps casters didn't DPS hard until the shadow crash came. We waited for the note that someone had a shadow crash, that person gets a skull on his head and we check where the shadow crash land, when the shadow crash landed we dpsed as hard as we could (did this with 2 mages and 2 locks including myself, did around 5k dps top dps)
The rogues and death knights need to silence him, we were with 2 rogues, 3 dks, and in emergencies we got 3 shaman who als can help with interupt.
NOTE: The interupt is the most important thing, if your tank gets hit by the flame it's already wipe, your tank cannot, I repeat, cannot withstand the 75% armor reduction debuff.
Other melee dps just melee atk the boss, plain and simple.
Big factors of this fight:
-Mana user dps:
Don't waste your mana till Shadow Crash occurs! Believe me you are better of saving mana during Shadow crash rather then wasting mana on the beginning of the fight. Heck it is even better if you just wait till shadow crash comes and then you DPS. Shadow crash increases dmg by 100%, casting speed increased and mana cost reduction. Believe me, I did the same and I ended up top dps with some other casters that did the same thing as me.
-Melee user dps:
Interupting is the important thing you need to do, though you need to make a rotation! We failed couple of times because 2 of our rogues both used kick at the same time, after that, we told them what rotation for interupting we did and then things went smoothly.
-Healers:
I don't know much about healers but it's better to say via Vent which healing group is up for mana regeneration. Just communicate via Vent. About the Saronite thingies, it is better if a DK pulled them with DG to you and then DPS needs to kill the Saronite asap, but we went trying the kiting method where you just move the boss to the other side so healers can just regenerate mana with ease.
Another note, I advice using bloodlust on his Enrage timer 3.00 min and it would be great if you timed it when mana user dps are standing on the shadow crash, that would totally increase the damage output.
Overall we had 5 wipes, and we all knew tacts from the 3rd wipe but it was only a matter of timing and communication to down him.

CASTERS:
Positioning:
All caster dps should be in the middle of the room, stacked up in one spot.
That gives them almost 100% uptime being in the stuff after lands.
Shadow Crash:
If any caster gets a skull on his head, all the caster group should move 10 yards, wait till it lands, come back and continue dpsing.
Mark of the Faceless:
If any of the casters gets the cross on him, he must move IMMEDIATELY from the group and wait till debuff is gone, then he come back to the group and continue dpsing. (Mages can blink/ice block (dunno other useful abilities here))
Saronite Vapor:
Is the only way to regenerate some mana, so if u have a chance, step on the green stuff, after Vapor is killed, get 6 stacks of debuff and step aside. After debuff is gone, u can repeat the operation. Best time to regenerate mana is while the boss gets Scurge of Darkness and main tank kites him around.
While regenerating mana, still be aware of boss abilities written above.
The Saronite Pools will return 0 mana if Vezax is within 15 yards the players in the pool. For the pool to return mana/deal damage, the player must be outside the Shadow Crash "dead zone".
HEALERS:
In my opinion, we should use 2 groups of the main tank healers (3 healers in each) and 2 raid healers (with no rotation, just random healing/regeneration).
Positioning of the main tank healers:
active: spreaded around the main tank (10yards away from each other)
passive: regenerate mana in the .
Positioning of the raid healers:
Stay away from the caster group like 15 yards, keep the mana up, heal the raid.
Shadow Crash:
Move 10 yards away from your position if u get a skull over your head. And dont stand on the black stuff after it lands.
Mark of the Faceless:
Make sure u are away from each player untill debuff is gone.
Saronite Vapor:
Regenerate mana with your group (mt healers), regenerate mana with casters (raid healers). Regenerate as written on the caster part.
HUNTERS:
Positioning:
Hunters should be spreaded in the room and 10 yards away from any player.
Shadow Crash:
Move 10 yards away from your position if u get a skull over your head.
Mark of the Faceless:
If u are spreaded correctly, u can keep dpsing, just make sure u are away from each player untill debuff is gone.
Saronite Vapor:
Hunters should kill Vapors (if they are close to it) after it is in the right/usable position (might need a call here from healers or casters).
Using the is an option, but with the its not necessary.
MELEE:
DPS
Assign two people to interupt.
MAIN TANK:
Tank the boss at the side of the room and when hits, kite clockwise/anti-clockwise around the room.

10 man hard mode really isn't as insane as it seems. If you've got 3 healers and a DK tank, you can have 2 healers constantly in shadow crashes (we had shammy & priest) and a 3rd in melee range (holydin, myself). The shadow crashed healers will easy keep a 40k hp tank up and if it's a DK, his abilities will counter the healing debuff of the crash really well. Plus the DK can heal himself though a lot of tough situations.
I was sat waiting to cast holy light if ever the tank got below 35% orso and cancelling if he'd been healed during my cast. I probably cast about 8-9 holy lights through the whole fight and 2 of them were almost full overheals due to not cancelling in time. I spent the rest of the time keeping JotP up with JoL and I SS'd the tank during the add phase only.
The only issue we had was that people kept dying to the crashes. Once the add is up, no-one can afford to be hit or it's game over. Mana isn't that big an issue if you use the crash technique, provided you keep dps up well. You should get Vezax to less that 40% before the add spawns easily. Always save BL and cooldowns for the add and it shouldn't be a problem.

Don't know if these have been listed before.. But here's a few tips.
Mark of the Faceless
- This boss is pretty much a check to see if your Healers/DPS actually know how to listen, and do what they have to do. Because honestly, if you aren't at least 90% aware of what's going on in this fight, it's going to be a wipe every time. If people don't move RIGHT AWAY when they, or someone close gets Mark of the Faceless, he'll heal up, and sometimes too much.. And it'll probably have to be called a wipe, or close to it. It's very hard to recover from a failed move, but it IS POSSIBLE. But if your Healers/DPS are in check, and everything is organized, this is the easiest boss in Ulduar.
So all in all.. Mark of the Faceless = Bad.
Shadow Crash
- Personally, I find that a good way to get your tank away from this, and keep your tank perfectly topped off at the same time is having one, or two (if you have) of your Priests spec into "Body and Soul" for the movement speed by 60% for 4 sec.

There are 5 old gods, C'Thun and Yogg-Saron are the only old gods whose names are known. General Vezax is a faceless one, just like Herald Volazj and Darkspeaker R'khem. General Rajaxx is a qiraji. Both faceless ones and quiraji are serving the old gods. Quiraji serve C'thun, and faceless ones serve Yogg-saron. It seems, that the old gods give the *general* title to their best warriors.

Just a note my guild was able to do this fight with only 2 healers a resto druid and a priest. We had a bear tanking it as well (note this is on 10man)
Few things we found that would work if you soulstone someone and you run out of vapors have them go commit suicide pop their soulstone they come back with mana. (Same goes for rebirth i think)
Another thing we noticed is you don't have to kite him. Our guild stood in place (on 10 man) and just beat on him and interupted the tank was able to just suck up the big partial frenzy or w/e he does. We also used pallies bubble trick to reduce the damage when ever it was up to help mitigate some of the frenzy damage or w/e you'd like to call it.
All in all this fight did take us about 2-3 days of grinding to down but once we got it all down we were able to do it pretty smoothly.

Just a note for Warlocks, using
Shadow Ward
before going into the saronite vapors basically gives you about 1k mana for no heals as you absorb 3.3k shadow damage which is basically the first 4 stacks (equals 1.5k mana regened, but 400 odd used for the ward, can make it even better by casting the ward in a shadow crash void)
EDIT: Just read that apparently Shadow Ward scales with spell power making it absorb even more damage and hence giving you even more mana back :)

Hard mode:
Nearly got him down yesterday on 10 man hard mode. Just some slacking ranged dps who died after the add was down by shadow crash (instant kill with the debuff from the add).
Minimum 3 persons at more than 15 yrd range of him, or else the shadow crash will land on melee. So we had our resto druid (me) melee the boss for clearcasting procs. Mostly used the clearcasting procc for a lifebloom to regen mana back from the bloom. This is less than normal. Also added fearie fire to increases the damage of the melee, since more dps makes this fight so much easier. Our holy paladin went also melee. Our priest healer went OOM near the end of the fight, but the paladin and the resto druid could keep up. 2 piece T7 resto druid bonus (5% reduced lifebloom cost) also helped alot. Don't use regen trinkets ofc, but equipment like

Not sure why de4dwings got downranked. I can confirm as of 9/6/2009 that dark runes ARE functional in 10 man Vezax (and I would presume 25 man also). As a holy pally, I found it useful to keep 1 handy when mana started getting tight towards the end of the fight.
Indeed, +1000 mana or so for a trivial health loss makes this an excellent idea if Vezax is putting strain on your mana pool. In conjunction with a flask of distilled wisdom, the rune gives you a solid chunk of extra mana.
Dark runes drop in Scholomance and they're not soulbound so you'll probably find some at the AH.

Penance is hitting for right around 3350 for each of its 3 ticks (=10k for the full heal). Multiply that by another 14% for crit (I don't have 3/3 Divine Aegis, I'm so bad) and divide by the mana cost to get a 23:1 mana efficiency.
For PW:S, I'm absorbing right around 6100 damage per shield, plus another 1200 healed from the glyph of PW:S, and Rapture's returning 517 mana (effectively per-shield, when I'm just shielding the tank). So the heal:mana ratio there is a ridiculous 62:1, obviously not scalable to be used solely.
For Flash Heal, it's hitting for about 4300, give or take. Multiply for crit and divide by mana cost, and that's only about a 9:1 ratio.
Does Rapture function during this fight?
And Penance is well known for being an incredibly powerful heal in terms of HPS and HPM. Other Healers, such as Resto Shaman reliant on Improved Water Shield and Holy Pallies reliant on Illumination, will not achieve anywhere near this mana efficiency.
Either way his melee damage has been Nerfed by almost 40% in nonheroic, so blizzard agrees that he was hitting far too hard.

A tip for rogues who have to kick his searing flames, my guild has the rogues equip Furious Gladiator's Leather Gloves because of the 10 Energy reduction on kick, making it slightly easier for you to kick and still keep some DPS going.

Replying to the comments about a prot pally, blessing of sanctuary also allows the pally to regain mana while tanking vezax. As a prot pally myself i never seem to be below 90% mana while tanking him so pallys who attempt to tank him should have no problems in doing so.

I don't see anybody has mentioned this yet - but being a druid healer you should not have many mana problems in general.
If you stand in the black goo spawned from a shadow crash, you get a -75% mana cost. So, your lifeblooms now only cost about... 185 mana each. (Down from approximately 740 mana). Stacking three blooms on another target would only cost 555 mana.
Now, the HOT portion of the heal does indeed get the reduced healing from standing in the bad goo. HOWEVER, when the ticks bloom, it's always based off of the current target's healing and current debuffs. So, the bloom will bloom for the full ~10k heal.
To add onto this, you get half of the mana back. This isn't half of the mana you spent - but half of the mana cost of the actual spell. So, for three stacks of mana, you'll get 740*3*.5 mana back. 1110 mana back, actually. So, you might be spending 555 mana to get the three stack up on a person, but you get about double that back when it blooms. So if a druid healer is runnin' low on mana, just start blooming the raid and you're back up to full in ~10 seconds.

not sure where you're getting your LB mana regen math from >.>
first of all, it normally returns half of the cost pre-gear/talent reductions. iirc it's 489 for a single stack's bloom (so 1467 for a 3-stack)... might be off by a very small amount as the servers are down and i can't double-check.
during the vezax encounter, you get back pretty much *half* of what you normally would from it (i wanna say 249? for a single LB... it's 240-something, i just don't remember the last number for sure). this makes the mana return for a 3-stack somewhere around 747 total, not 1110.
it's still a net gain but it's a small one - hardly something you can "fill your mana bar in 10 seconds with". 747 (return) - 555 (cost) = 192. 192/3 = 64 mana per GCD = 320 mp5 *max* - assuming your LB GCD was capped at 1 second and you were spamming it every GCD. it would take you one minute to "regen" 6400 mana using this method, and that's assuming you never had to move out of clouds, from one cloud to the next and/or away from shadow crash/life leech warnings (which would happen multiple times over a span of 60 seconds).
now i'm not saying that casting LB from shadow crash puddles can't be a viable strat, but it's not something you can hop into a puddle to do for regen as an alternative to vapors. i think it comes down to a matter of personal preference, raid comp/synergy with other healers, gear, etc.
i happen to prefer rejuv idol + meleeing for OOC procs to put up LBs for the majority of my healing, a strat that gets even better once you pick up the 4-pc bonus. in 10-man i also keep regrowth up on the tank most of the time (i'll let it drop for a bit sometimes if the tank is staying at high health, i always time it so that the direct heal won't be wasted). in 25 man i occasionally cast WG on the ranged if they let themselves get hit with something since it's incredibly mana-efficient if i can plant it to where it'll hit 5-6 people (have never used WG on 10-man). i try to get myself into the tank group so that if i get an omen proc at a point where it could help quite a bit to cast tranquility, i would at least have the option (i don't bother talenting the CD for it, though).

The Saronite Animus spawns at a fixed point in time, 4 minutes after the pull.
In T8.5 gear you can race it and kill the general before this happens. However, doing so will
not
grant you the hard mode credit. You do have to kill the Animus for hard mode credit.

Although Aspect of the Viper partially works for this fight, its still recommended for the hunter to jump into the pools, its almost impossible to keep a decent dps rotation with aspect of the viper just ticking off the mp/5 as opposed to attacks.
my dps dropped from 5k to a measly 2kish after a good min in viper trying to mana back up.

if any1 reads this post take some screenshots of all the pictures in the room
accourding to current screenshots i see there is a giant mouth similar to yoggs big mouth, and in the other i see a giant serpent which would make the theory of a giant maelstrom beast possible

I suspect I will be downrated for this, but I haven't seen mention of moonkin mana regen on crits anywhere here - yes, I know Innervate doesn't work, but is the innate moonkin ability to regen mana on crits also disabled here? I'm assuming the answer is yes but wanted to check.
Saw mention of somebody recommending suiciding and coming back via soulstone/rebirth to gain mana ... the only way I can see this being worth it would be if the resto druid had the rebirth glyph that brings back the target with full health and mana on them, but only one or two "lucky" people in the raid are going to be able to benefit from that, and if a non-mana user is the one to die then that's going to be wasted anyway ...

Fun tip for Pally healers on normal mode: When standing in the Saronite Vapors to regenerate mana, you can bubble after a few stacks and continue to stand in the vapor until your bubble wears out (you will not take the damage from the vapor but will gain the mana). This will give you a big chunk of mana back at least once during the fight (possibly twice, depending on your kill time). Using 2 pally healers, this tactic made this fight much less stressful for our healers.

My guild killed Vezax last night for the first time (I know, we are a bit behind)
Most of the tried involved kiting him during the
Surge of Darkness
, but that made problems for the interrupters.
In the end, we decided to try and absorb the
Surge of Darkness
and we one-shot him.
We used a bear tank, he used his
Barkskin
every Surge together with a dodge trinket (he had 2). In addition, we made a rotation involving a disc priest
Pain Suppression
and 2 paladins with
Hand of Sacrifice
together with
Divine Shield
.
The tank was never even close to dying.

Does anyone know if the priests shadowfiend restores mana for this fight or not? If so, spec'ing shadow, but staying out of shadowform so you can heal might be worth it. Reduced cooldown time for shadowfiend might really help.

My guild was consistently successful pre-3.2 with the DK/IbF standing still strat. But now, with the IbF nerf and no handy bear tank to use, we decided to learn the kiting strat.
DPS was fine; healing mana was fine; the problem we kept having was that while kiting, the MT would get hit with MotF and melee would start dying and the boss would heal up a lot. How do people counteract this? Is there a good way anyone has found to prevent the MT from getting MotF in the first place? Maybe he was just kiting too far away, or? Thanks for any ideas.

As of patch 3.2 General Vezax has received a significant change in his encounter. these are the changes we noticed in the 25 man raid version when doing his Hard Mode.
his health has been reduced by at least 7 million possibly more I would have to double check.
He now only spawns SIX Saronite vapors instead of his usual EIGHT. This means that the Hardmode encounter and Animus spawn will happen much sooner in the fight, but because of the health nerf Vezax's health % should still be about the same when he spawns (somewhere below 15%. more if you're DPS is good)
The main trick now is that Vezax will still cast the normal amount of Shadow Crashes that he would on a normal length fight. And since this fight is now shorter by a significant amount this means his shadow crashes are cast VERY VERY FREQUENTLY now. Your ranged group that is used to moving out of standard and slow crashes will now have to be moving very quickly if not almost constantly. As such their DPS is going to drop. I would advise that they focus almost entirely on staying alive.
I believe the Saronite Animus himself has also received a health nerf of about 2 million but again, I would have to double check next week to see for myself.

Nerfed in 3.2; We wanted to make players aware of several changes made to the General Vezax encounter upon the release of patch 3.2, which weren't noted in the official patch notes.
These changes affect both 10-player and 25-player modes. First off, when considering the hardmode of the encounter, the mechanics were overly favoring groups that made heavy use of Restoration druids (Omen of Clarity procs) and “Enhancement” shamans using healing gear (Shamanistic Rage and Improved Stormstrike) to circumvent the mana restrictions. Omen of Clarity will no longer proc for Restoration druids, and Enhancement shamans receive a healing debuff similar to the ones Retribution paladins have had since the encounter’s initial implementation.
Recognizing that this would make the encounter far more difficult for raid groups that have come to rely on those mechanics, we also made changes to ease the overall mana burden when attempting the hardmode. The health of General Vezax and the Saronite Animus was reduced by roughly 25%, and the Animus will now spawn after six Vapors, down from eight, assuming none have been killed.
In addition, prior to 3.2, General Vezax could be very erratic in the use of some of his abilities, leading to long gaps between Shadow Crashes in particular. His behavior in this regard is now more consistent. As a side-effect of this change, in 25-player mode in particular, he will also cast Searing Flames slightly more often – whenever his Fire school isn’t locked out by player interrupts, essentially. Finally, because the “more consistent” Crash use ended up being a bit on the frequent side, a minor hotfix recently increased the period between Crash casts.

i can confirm as a paladin tank that mana generation is not a problem in the encounter in the fight, and 3 healers were not needed to keep me up. having almost 38k hp buffed i require 1 dedicated healer at all times with a priest using pain surpression during first enrage, my divine protection during second enrage and a paladin using hand of sacrifice the 3rd, to give the priests pain surpression enough time to cool down. using this method you will have only 1 healer needing clouds at one time and it can get you in the habit of not relying on them as much so hard mode attempts will not be as difficult.

No-one has mentioned this, but healing can be assisted with the herbalism-ability lifeblood. Only restores ~4k health (scales slightly with hp level), but it's a perfect way to alleviate the damage from saronite pools, or when no healer is in range (if raid is poorly spread out)

Tip for Holy Priests:
Holy priests will never run out of mana if you're doing this right!
Guardian Spirit will be you best friend in this encounter. What I did is I stand in the vapors until i reach 3 stacks, then i cast renew on myself, that should've cover up all the dmg from 1st to 4th stack. I then put PoM on myself on 5th stack to counter the dmg of the 6th. I then pre-cast greater heal asap so i counter the 7th stack's dmg. lastly I pop Guardian Spirit and just eat the 8th stack. you'll be near dead after that, don't panic and start healing or the 9th stack will come, run out first, then heal.
so I've used renew, PoM, G.heal and G.S ,which i believe the 3100 mana you gain from 1st to 5th stack will be enough, so your net mana gain will not be less than 22400 mana, which is probably 100% of your mana. you can simply do it again after 3 mins when your G.S. is out of CD.
this is what I've tested out, but once only. feel free to correct me if I am wrong

Can anyone confirm or deny the following "trick" of sorts (Potentially using this to regenerate the mana of two healers by a vast amount)
Have a druid cast innervate on a target healer (except the paladin), then cast divine internvetion (hopefully the way the mechanics of the spell work, it would remove the mana regeneration limitation aura and allow innervate to tick away), following this with a glyphed battle rez you just bought a lot of heals back for the cost of a battle rez essnetially.

this fight, is golden for a shadow priest. it makes us very useful. First of all the purpple puddles more than double the healing that VE does. since u get a speed bonus, and dmg bonus AND That healing isnot reduced by the puddle.
second dispersion wont work like it used to so what you do is go into a green puddle cast a sheild and when you start taking dmg disperse reducing the dmg you are taking to a mere nothing really.
when you come out of the green puddle you will not even need heals as your dots healing you for 25% of the dmg you have done will have brought you back to full health in no time.
also this was the easiest fight i have done as a spriest and the party heaing isnt anything to scoff at either.
if you are having a hard time i would reccamend grabing another spriest to move into another party. I managed to reach over 1/3 of the healer with the most healing done in this fight and it all cost me 0 mana to me.

This current Ulduar ID has been totally %^&*ed for us, post 4.0.3a.
First the old ID we wanted to extend - gone. No other ID disappeared, just Ulduar25.
Second - we could port to Mimiron without killing the trash before him, the port was just available.
And now third - no Vezax, no Vezax trash.

Healers struggling with mana now that cata made it a bit harder to manage(or at least it was), if you cast hots, or even healing rain, while standing in the mana/healing cost reduction pools you can move out of them and the ability will remain active. This bypasses the healing reduction and saves mana.

Tactic:
In this fight you will not be able to regenerate mana. To activate Hard Mode you have to wait until Saronite Animus appears (about 3 minutes). During this time, you can not destroy any Saronite Vapor. Try to avoid Shadow Crashes. Put DoTs on Vezax only when you are standing in a dark puddle forming on impact of Shadow Crash, because it increases magical damage dealt by 100%. Don't extend the duration of DoTs - don't hurry, you have plenty of time. Be careful not to kill Vezax too early! Voidlord should be healed only when you're not standing in a dark puddle, because it reduces healing done by 75%. When the Boss will have a little HP, turn off Voidlord's auto Void Shield, set him to passive and command him to stand in place (must be facing the Boss and stop attacking him). Now stay alive until Saronite Animus appears. When Vezax starts to cast Surge of Darkness (occurs every minute), you must immediately command your minion to follow you and start to kite. The appearance of Saronite Animus and Surge of Darkness occurs at the same time - this is the most difficult moment in the fight. Before this happens, Vezax should not stand in the middle of the room. Kill Saronite Animus (don't forget to use a dark puddle) and then kill General Vezax. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Trying to 2-man this in 10-man mode with a Retadin (me) as a makeshift tank and an Arcane Mage. Both have ilvls around 450. The main issue is that I always go OOM (even though I'm pretty sure that mechanic wasn't designed to punish melee) so I can't build up holy power and therefore heal myself effectively--even standing in the green pools doesn't seem to give me quite enough, and I often die in the gap between needing more mana and killing mist. Surely we shouldn't be struggling to defeat this as a 10-man without trying for the hardmode? Is there something obvious we're missing or has a mechanic been fiddled with by Blizz inadvertantly?

Duo'd this on 25 man as Affliction Warlock (item level 507) and Resto Shaman (item level 485). With an all-mana composition like that, this is a most interesting boss fight.
We were able to get

at the same time. Here's how.
As Warlock, you get a single mana bar. Your mana only goes down, so you cast ONLY:
Curse of the Elements
. Good damage per mana. Don't refresh early.
Agony
. Good damage per mana. Always keep it up on boss and Animus, when Animus spawns. Don't ever let it drop off. Refresh only when AffDots shows green, or just before it's about to fall off.
Corruption
. Good damage per mana, gives you Soul Shards. Always keep it up on boss and Animus. Refresh only when AffDots shows green.
Haunt
. No mana cost. Keep a reserve of Soul Shards before Animus is up, then keep Haunt on Animus. Once Animus dies, keep Haunt on boss.
Mortal Coil
. Free damage and a heal every 45 seconds.
Do not cast any other spells. No Dark Soul. No Unstable Affliction. No Soul Swap. No channeling!
It won't hurt if you get behind the boss (and behind Animus, when it is up) and
turn on your auto-attack
. Your Voidlord should be tanking, and will be doing 50% of all damage, but if you're going to be close to enrage, and standing around to save mana, you might as well auto-attack.
The Resto Shaman was able to recuperate a fair amount of mana through Water Shield. At her item level 485, this was enough to keep up both players and Voidlord, with mana left over to use Flame Shock, and several Fire Elementals.
The boss will not use Shadow Crash if you never interrupt Searing Flames - which you don't have to. With Animus dying so slow, we ended up with 96 stacks of the debuff, but it was healable.
It turned out to be a very silly fight, different from what we're used to. You stand there and melee him in the back, and maintain your most mana-efficient DoTs. When people say Hunters in Vanilla mainly used auto-attack, this is what I imagine it felt like.

This boss is located on almost due South of Kologarn's torso, on the ring that contains Thorim, Hodir, Mimiron and Freya after they are killed. It is slightly West of the Southernmost point, and down a hallway.
I spent a few minutes looking for General Vezax and didn't see anything useful here to point out his location. Hope this helps someone looking to kill General Vezax and then Yogg-Saron.

If you're having spawn issues with this boss what I would recommend is leaving the instance for 30 minutes. By then a soft reset should have occurred and the mobs should have spawned.
Rather than walking down the ramp only to discover the boss hasn't spawned, I'd recommend typing "/tar general" into your chat box, once you have teleported to the shattered bridge area. Then press enter, if you grab General Vezax as a target then congratulations!
If not, just try another 30m reset.

Those after running achievements for this raid, be warned… it is common for General Vezax to not spawn and therefore stops you from being able to go onto the last boss. Has happened to me twice now and to many others.
Hopefully a fix is rolled out in the near future.

I've been attempting solo hard mode on my shadow priest. I've seen the claim that as long as you're not interrupting Searing Flames you shouldn't be getting Shadow Crashes, but I am definitely getting Shadow Crashes, complete with knockback and stacking debuff.
I never use Silence. I've tried a more defensive strategy (Renew and Shield while running away) as well as offensive (lots of mind flay with the occasional burst with Vampiric Embrace) and both times got frequent Shadow Crashes.
Worst part is at point blank there's no chance to dodge. I wouldn't mind having the acceleration spots so much if he didn't keep knocking me out of them with yet more Crashes. Is this the new normal, or a bug?

I've seen a few videos about doing this fight in MoP, and I've also read most of the comments here. Which makes me wonder, is this fight now bugged or something?
The thing is, it seems that mana users should be able to do SOMETHING, but our problem (me and a friend) is that whatever we do, ALL 300k mana is gone like 3 secs after the fight begins. And the pools isn't helping at all when max stacks gives under 13k mana, and just about every spell/ability costs more.
Currently, we have no chance of winning this fight, unless we get help from one or more melees. And it's retarded that a low level boss with less hp than easy rare elites on Timeless Isle is giving us problems like that.

I think it's very strange to give these faceless ones ranks like general. Later on in Dragon Soul the first three bosses are called generals too. It doesn't really make sense, while the bigger creatures like Vezax are sentient it seems that a lot of the creatures they control are not, so there's no need for their subjects to recognize authority. It's just hard for me to imagine that in the Warcraft universe officer rank structure originated from these ancient monster gods...

With the new lore in both Legion and Warcraft: Chronicles, we now know that creatures in this category are called C'thraxxi, the most powerful creatures at the Old God's disposal, and are more often than not, generals of their respective armies. Though the Black Empire was dismantled, it is not currently known how many C'thraxxi exist. Many of the Old God's minions went into hiding after their defeat, and were subsequently forgotten. Time will tell if and when they will again reveal themselves.

Fun bit of trivia: Vezax cannot be killed while the Saronite Animus is alive. It's slow-going to damage him through the barrier even at 110, but my curiosity was rewarded with him sitting at 1 HP until I killed the Animus.

He will now spawn a chest if you meet the hardmode criteria. (not standing in any of the saronite clouds until a saronite animus forms and then killing the animus.)
The chest's location is right where he normally stands.

Timewalking note:
At the moment, Mark of the Faceless doesn't scale properly. It siphons 5000 from players near the target and most of us don't have 5000 health to spare. It will hit the melee if it doesn't have enough ranged to choose from. Keep all of your ranged spread out in a semicircle around the boss so there is no chance of the Mark hitting anyone.
This includes Holy Paladins.
My group was mostly normal Nathria geared with a Brewmaster main tank. We didn't need to kite for Surge of Darkness.
