Corporal Venn is one of two men, the other being Private Casey, who survived from the whole Unit S led by Thassarian. They were sent by Counselor Talbot to take the Wailing Ziggurat from the Scourge - a handful of men, haevily outnumbered, a mission that was meant to fail. (For more info read the comicbook WoW: Death Knight and/or the do quest chain started by Word on the Street.)

If you return to him before finishing the quest he gives , he SHOULD say "Have you not finished yet? Do you want me to draw you a diagram?"
