Knights are just one of the general ranks of the Silver Hand.
Others include squires, crusaders, templars, phalanx, and defenders.

Knights of the Silver Hand devote themselves as diligently to combat training as much as they do to their daily prayers, honouring their battle skills in order to best defend the weak and the innocent.

A brief history of The Silver Hand

The Silver Hand Knights were part of the order of paladins created after the First War by Archbishop Alonsus Faol. Alonsus was also the founder and leader of the Clerics (a melee based priest) in Northshire; named the Holy Order of Northshire Clerics.

The Northshire Clerics existed prior to the First War and their primary focus was to peacefully spread the word of the Light throughout the Eastern Plaguelands. Sadly the Order did not last very long due to the lack of battle focus. Despite their lack of combat experience, the Clerics still did their fair share of fighting in the war, however, were not very effective against the Orcish Horde.

After the Hordes victory, Alonsus Faol gathered the survivors of the war and travelled North to the Kingdom of Lordaeron. In Lordaeron, Alonsus founded the Alonsus Chapel in the city of Stratholme and trained his remaining clerics in the art of war.
Uther was the first Paladin (of Azeroth), other well-known names followed; Gavinrad the Dire, Turalyon, Tirion Fordring, Saidan Dathrohan and Alexandros Mograine would all join the new order.
It was known as the Order of the Silver Hand or the Knights of the Silver Hand.

The Order of the Silver Hand was essential in the Second War against the Horde. They served as Champions of the Alliance, boosting the morality of the soldiers who fought beside them. They proved to be very effective on the battlefield - tearing through the ranks of the Orcish Horde with the perfect defense and offense. The physical prowess of the Paladins combined with their healing powers was one of the single largest contributors to the Alliance's victory in the Second War.

After the Second War, the Order of the Silver Hand began training new paladins in Stormwind City and Ironforge. Arthas Menethil, Prince of Lordaeron, was sworn into the order in a ceremony performed in Stormwind's Cathedral of Light.

After the Third War, the paladins who remained in Lordaeron continued to fight against the Scourge. Under the leadership of Lord Commander Saidan Dathrohan and Highlord Alexandros Mograine {who wielded the Ashbringer} the paladins fought the undead throughout the Plaguelands. From their base at Hearthglen, they were able to gain some victories, but they weren't able to achieve their goal: the complete destruction of the Scourge.

Worried about the Forsaken entrenching themselves in the Ruins of Lordaeron, the paladins established a base in what would later be known as the Scarlet Monastery in Tirisfal Glades. They also made an alliance with Lord Valdelmar of Tyr's Hand for mutual assistance. However, during an attack on Stratholme, Lord Commander Saidan Dathrohan was killed and his corpse possessed by the dreadlord Balnazzar. Balnazzar started slowly working against the order's objectives from the inside. Fearing that the Ashbringer might destroy the Forsaken before his plans could come to fruition, Varimathras had Balnazzar arrange Alexandros's death (by manipulating his son Renault, into killing him)

The possessed Saidan Dathrohan then reorganized what remained of the Silver Hand in Lordaeron into the Scarlet Crusade. These paladins strove fanatically to destroy evil, without any regards to the means used and despised all non-human races. Other paladins, disgusted with the Scarlet Crusaders' zealotry, formed the Argent Dawn, which took a less extreme approach and accepted members from all of Azeroth's races into their ranks.

In modern times, the restored Order of the Silver Hand consists of the following groups:
The original paladins of the Silver Hand, led by Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker
The Argent Crusade, led by Lord Maxwell Tyrosus
The Hand of Argus, led by Vindicator Boros
The Blood Knights, led by Lady Liadrin
The Sunwalkers, led by Aponi Brightmane
While not directly stated, Brother Sammuel and Eligor Dawnbringer is also present, therefore the Brotherhood of Northshire and Brotherhood of the Light is apparently also represented.
