In true "Bugwalker" fashion; a few days ago Windwalkers discovered a new bug involving
神鹤引项踢
that popped up and has been decreasing Windwalker's AOE abilities. In this article I'll discuss the details of the bug, talk about how long its been in place and what may have caused it, as well as what its effects are.

What is the new Spinning Crane Kick Bug?
On live servers, it appears that Windwalkers currently no longer get Mastery benefit modifying
神鹤引项踢
. This is unquestionably unintended, but still results in a loss of damage for current Windwalkers in AOE situations. This means that whether you use
神鹤引项踢
into another
神鹤引项踢
or an ability in between, the casts will do the same damage.
Discovery and Possible Cause
This was first brought to my attention early Saturday morning when user, GGBE, commented on my
9.0.5 "Survival Guide" on PeakofSerenity.com
, that several Chinese players had reported that
神鹤引项踢
was no longer scaling with Windwalker's Mastery. Within a few minutes we had several people popping on Live to test it out, largely our EU compatriots who were more awake than I was at the time. What we found confirmed it:
The
left picture
is using
神鹤引项踢
when Mastery should be triggering and increasing the damage, the
right
picture is using
神鹤引项踢
back to back so that Mastery shouldn't be triggering. As you can see the damage is nearly identical.
As people combed through logs and other places we found that it appears to have popped up sometime late Friday. This coincides with Blizzard pushing a small hotfix for Windwalkers that fixed another bug that caused the Azerite version of
赤精之舞
to seemingly deal 10x the damage it should. Very few players noticed this unless they happened to be going and doing old content AND did so using an Azerite piece with
赤精之舞
on it, so that's a small percentage of a small group of our already small population. This bug with
赤精之舞
appeared to stem from when Blizzard fixed the talent version of
赤精之舞
to correctly increase
神鹤引项踢
damage by 200%.
While its unclear how these things are linked, I am very far from a computer programmer or coder, so I can't pass judgement on how A led to B led to C.
Effects of the Bug
Numerical
This is a bug that's very easy to calculate how it changes things for Windwalkers. Because Mastery is generally a desirable stat, many Windwalkers have somewhere between 20-30% of it, assuming they've been balancing it with Critical Strike and Versatility. This means that each cast of
神鹤引项踢
does 20-30% less damage.
On a fight with consistent AOE damage like Stone Legion Generals, or over the course of a M+ dungeon,
神鹤引项踢
can easily be 30-40% of your damage. So the 20-30% loss of
神鹤引项踢
can translate into 5-15% less overall damage in situations where
神鹤引项踢
is a large percentage of your damage.
Functional
While the damage loss from the bug is sizable, it does not have a sizable affect on how Windwalker plays. Assuming any reasonable level of
运筹连环
conduit,
神鹤引项踢
still overtakes
幻灭踢
at 2 targets and
旭日东升踢
at 3 targets, although the difference is obviously much smaller.
Hopeful
While many of you reading this will likely fall into two camps; "oh man WW is so broken all the time" or "omg I can't believe WW has so many bugs", the truth of it is that Windwalker has always been plagued by bugs, some that increase damage and some that don't. Its only recently that the spotlight has been on Windwalker and the larger WoW community has become aware of these.
In Shadowlands, Windwalkers have received more fixes to bugs, whether beneficial or detrimental, than in most of the previous expansions combined. The fact that this bug popped up because another was fixed, is evidence that something is finally being done to help all these bugs. Its clearly not a perfect process, but I'd take this over stagnation like we've seen for years before.
Conclusion
Its almost certain that this bug will be fixed shortly, with or without the existence of this article. However, until it is fixed, Windwalkers will still see a dip in their AOE capabilities. There's also always the chance that when this gets fixed another pops up, as seems to often happen with Windwalkers.
Someone, or someones, are clearly working on Windwalkers, and the existence of this bug is evidence of that. Had it been discovered on a weekday, it probably would have been fixed more immediately, as they have generally been timely with bug fixes in recent weeks. Unfortunately, it likely came into being at the end of the day on Friday, so a fix will likely come early into this coming week. While it's frustrating to lose damage to a bug or something out of your control, it doesn't diminish the fact that someone is obviously trying to make Windwalker better and move away from the "bugs are WW class fantasy." Its definitely not an easy path to get there, and there's more work to be done, like this
list of still existing bugs
, but I'll take new bugs that get fixed and show they're making things better over wondering if they remember Monk exist as a class 100 times out of 100.
