WARNING: SHADOWLANDS STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
In the World Quest
铭记之事
, we return to the Mnemonic Locus in Bastion. The Mnemonic Locus is a location where the Kyrian keep archives of everyone in their ranks that have reached ascension, and during the
Bastion Leveling Storyline
, it is attacked by the rebellious Forsworn, who seek to obtain these archives to bolster their ranks.
In this World Quest, we're asked by Thenios, the Kyrian Paragon of Wisdom, to search for any writings we might find in the area, so that they can be preserved for eternity. However, as we collect and read these memorandums, we come across some that have been written or said by Uther himself.
Uther: All around me, the Ascended speak of the Path. The way in which each soul must find its peace, its eternity, after a lifetime of flawed mortality.
Uther: I have tried to forget. I have tried to forgive. Yet... He lingers in every waking thought. Down every path.
Uther: This anger is foreign to me. Unrecognizable. I must cleanse it. That is my path. My Paragon said it should be so, and it WILL be so.
Uther: The Light has damned your soul, Arthas. May it rot in the Maw!
Uther: Will his fate ever bring me peace? Will I ever be free of him? Perhaps... in time. Perhaps.
This also marks the first time we see Uther's Kyrian model in the game - During this dialogue, we see him in his Bluther model. For the entirety of the Kyrian campaign, up until its very end, Uther is seen in his Forsworn model. This likely means that these ramblings were recorded during his journey to becoming Ascended, before changing his allegiance to that of the Forsworn.
Uther and Arthas' Influence in the Forsworn
With this, as well as the knowledge of
Uther's participation in the Kyrian Covenant Campaign
, we likely have a timeline as to what happened to Uther during his stay in Bastion.
During his journey to become one of the Kyrian, Uther was sent to the Temple of Purity to shed the memories of his former life, but try as he could, he was unable to forget the memories of his death in the hands of Arthas.
Because of his inability to forget, he likely failed his Temple of Purity trial and like many others who fail, was sent to the Citadel of Loyalty, where recruits are propped up to try for their trials again. While preparing to continue his trials as a Kyrian in the Citadel of Loyalty, Uther became close to Devos, the Paragon of Loyalty. During this time, Devos learned of Uther's connection to the Maw, became very close to the Paladin, and even ascended him before he was ready (Kyrian:
格里斯蒂亚的恩典
).
I remember this particular soul... Uther. Devos brought him before us some time ago. She pleaded her case about his soul having a connection to the Maw.
She then took him under wing, ascending him before he was ready. He became her other hand alongside Lysonia, as it were.
He may proclaim a change of heart, but we shall see. Place him under guard. He may stay by the Archon's grace, but I will not take any chances with one so...broken.
As it is learned during the Kyrian campaign, it was Uther's influence and past memories that made Devos lose his loyalty to the Archon and the Kyrian ways, and led him to create the Forsworn. This is discussed between Devos and the Archon, Kyrestia the Firstborne, during the Spires of Ascension dungeon (Kyrian:
晋升高塔
):
Kyrestia the Firstborne: We sacrifice because we must. Mortal burdens would only impede our sacred duty.
Devos: No. It was a mortal who exposed the folly of your edicts.
Devos: As I peered into Uther's memories, what I saw shook me to the core.
Devos: But you refused to see the truth. That the path is flawed. That we serve a lie.
Devos: And so, I listened to the Jailer's words. I learned of the great injustice you and others thrust upon him... and upon us all.
With this, it can be concluded that Arthas was indirectly responsible for the creation of the Forsworn, as it was the events that he set in motion that eventually caused the Paragon of Loyalty to fall into doubt. The Forsworn rebellion was not a complete waste, though - In the end of the Spires of Ascension dungeon, the Archon does agree that the Kyrian could stand to change their ways, but more important issues loom ahead of the Covenant - Like the Jailer breaking free from his prison in The Maw.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Devos...
Kyrestia the Firstborne: The Jailer's schemes have torn a schism in the ranks of the kyrian. One that must be healed.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Long have we believed that our mortal lives are burdens to be shed in the name of service. And yet, the deeds of mortals are what won the day.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: You have my gratitude. Once the Jailer lies defeated... there may be much more for the Kyrian to discuss.
