From what I have read on various sites, people will be able to purchase the Moonkin Hatchling this month (Nov. 2010). The Pandaren Monk was such a huge success and they made so much money for the Make A Wish Foundation that the Moonkin Hatchling will be the new charity pet available on the Blizzard PetStore this November!

I already have a mini me when I'm in tree form. I can't wait to get this little guy when for when I'm in balance! Druids everywhere should be pretty excited about this, all of the ones who like mini-pets anyways : )

Your own little owlbear pet - not just for druids.

*edit* it appears that this item is now merely a container which will then yield either the "Night Elf" or the "Tauren" version of the pet.

As you can see on the "See also" tab, there is another copy of this item/pet.
(At the time of this post, both share the icon ability_druid_improvedmoonkinform)
Since the beta build 13241 added two icons, apparently each for Night Elf and Tauren, my guess is that while of course all your characters will receive this pet after you purchased it, Alliance characters will get the Night Elf version, while Horde characters will get the Tauren version (switching of course upon faction change as so many other items, companions and mounts do as well)

Unique Features
The Moonkin Hatchling has a cute animation where it will jump up and try to fly (then fall back down). This pet has a different model depending on whether you're Alliance or Horde. The horde model is an owlkin, and the alliance model is a moonkin (similar to the alliance/horde boomkin forms). This pet will dance when the /dance emote is used on it.

How to get it
This pet can be purchased from The Blizzard Store for $10.00 or €10.00 or £9.00. As with other account-wide loot codes, it can only be used on a single World of Warcraft account. If you have multiple accounts on a single battle.net account, you must purchase one code per account. This pet will be mailed to all your current characters and new characters upon creation.

Be careful to purchase the correct loot code, as NA codes won't work on EU accounts and vise versa!

I've noticed on some characters, I get the pet itself mailed to me, not the egg that contains the pet. Odd.

My friend actually got this egg in the satchel that you recieve from entering Heroic dungeons as a tank/healer.

I havent heard about this before, it seems unlikely since he would never buy anything but play-time from the store.

He also gets the pet on every new character he creates

Got this today and though slightly annoying you cannot summon the opposite factions Moonkin, though you do get mail to both your Horde and Alliance toons (if you have created both), they are very cute, and I actually prefer the Horde one....now off to waste a few hours power leveling the little chap....!
