use this rather than the Pristine Fur (equivalent of Arctic Fur).

I have found that Sethria's roost in Mt Hyjal right where the brood mother spawn is the best for scales. The 81 twilight dragonkin drop about 40-50% on scales.

If you don't hand in the quest
Blackout
then you can keep using this to kill the dragons without them fighting back at all ;)
They have around 10-20% drop rate

Hey everyone, as you may already know I've compiled a list of the best Volatile and Embersilk locations so I decided it was time to get on with making some Savage Leather & Blackened Dragonscale Farming guides. So, below you will find the best places I've found to farm for Savage Leather and Blackened Dragonscales. If you're really looking for a good spot I recommend checking out my Lost city of Tol'Vir video, however be warned, not all classes will be able to do it! Good luck and happy hunting!

Go on top of the tree where Skarderis is in Obsidian Forest - Twilight Highlands you can pick off dragons
who will not attack you
and will fall into the tree, which you can easily fly to and skin.

Best place to farm for this by far, as of patch 4.0.3, is the west side of Pale Roost in Deepholm, where the elite Stone Drakes are downed and rooted with less than half health for a quest. The drop rate of Blackened Dragonscale seems to be higher than in Hyjal. And they are guaranteed otherwise to drop a Savage Leather (no scaps). Also there is nothing else to aggro in the area, and the drakes don't attack unless unattacked. They also have a fairly high drop rate of dragon flank - an ingredient for some good buff food.

I have to say that I find the Elite Dragons near "The Pale Roost" in Deepholm to be the best place for grinding these. The dragons have like 70-80k HP when they fall down and it feels like the droprate is around 10%

At the Obsidian Forest, if you tag the pyrewings with a DoT as they fly by, if the DoT is still on them at the time they're killed you get to loot and skin them. If the DoT has fallen off when they're killed, they'll sparkle but you won't be able to see any loot, so you can't loot and skin them.
If you stand in an area where their corpses drop frequently, you're more likely to have a dot on them when they go down. My skinner is an ele shaman, so I usually dot one, pull a ground-based dragonkin, dot another, and after the area is clear of grounded dragonkin fly around a bit to see if I missed any pyrewings while my mana regens. It's not as fast as an AoE grind, but I'd be dead if I tried that anyway.

I farm these at the Twilight Highlands, south of the Crucible of Carnage.
The Highland Black Drake drop them almost every kill for me, don't know why the percent listed on wowhead is so low.
Anyway i got 16 of these in approx 15 minutes in my last run through.
Edit: These mobs do have a lot of health and their flame breath should be interrupted.

Twilight Highlands,Obsidian Forest hands down is the best spot for the scales.
ive spent hours at each location and the drop rate here can sometimes be 75% and dragonflanks drop almost every mob! goodluck!

I killed 100 dragonkin in about 45 minutes
well, not every skinner is a hunter :) I, being a druid skinner/LW did a similar test: To skill up my LW I wanted dragonscales, so I went to Twilight Highlands having read the posts here. I wondered: How many scales do I get until I have 40 savage leather (= 8 Heavy Savage Leather as needed in my LW pattern). Answer: I got 23 scales, giving me an excess of 13 (10 are needed for the pattern). I got 35g in grey trash loot, 1 elementium box and 1 green item and a bloated stomach (2 volatile air for me) + 25 dragon flanks. Given that on my server scales go for 15g while savage leather yields 5g - not bad at all.
The fights are, as described here, easy enough, even if you are yourself "the pet" who "takes all the crap" :) - if you want more of a challenge you can pull a few more dragonkin and tank them down, too.
There are Vermillion drakes (green, friendly) who also fight your targets in the area. You can help them! If you are careful you don't even get the aggro and you do get the loot/skin! They will not, however, engage in a fight that you started, unless they are taking damage from the mob you pulled.

obsidian forest, twilight highlands, by far. charscales drop dragonscales most of the time, viletongues drop savage leather, no scraps at all. love it. high respawn, plus killing ones in fights with green allies is perfect.
trash sells for about 20g per farming hour, scales on my server are 20g per scale, i can usually get almost 25-30 scales per hour. thats about 520 - 600g per hour on my server, staghelm.

I had to farm these myself today for my leatherworking and I thought I'd pay attention to how effective farming was in Obsidian Forest while I was there (for future reference). I'm a level 85 MM Hunter, so I kill pretty efficiently and never had to rest. Even with another person in the area killing the dragonkin, I was never without something to kill.
For note, it was stated above somewhere that the Vermillion Slayers and Ashmanes would not help you fight enemies if they had not already engaged the fight or been hit by one of their abilities or spells. However, I found that they WILL engage the enemy you are fighting even if the enemy did not hit it and you were the one to "start" the fight if they are reasonably close. If there is one nearby, they will run to your enemy and begin fighting it. This was somewhat helpful as it did speed things along a bit.
I timed myself to see how long each stack of 20 Blackened Dragonscales took me to obtain (4 stacks in all). The longest time a stack took to get was about 45 minutes. The shortest time was about 24 minutes. When I had all four stacks, the average of my time spent fell right about 30 minutes a stack.
I also got an average of 30-40 silver per kill (which accumulates nicely when you need to get 80 dragonscales), vendor trash which sells for an average of 20-30 silver a piece and stack up to 20 (claws and paws basically), a couple of greens, and of course - Savage Leather when I didn't get the Blackened Dragonscales and the rare Strange Bloated Stomach (I'd average about 2 stomachs per stack of 20 scales).
So all in all this was a tedious farm in that it's fairly boring BUT it's an easy way to obtain the Dragonscales and there is no waiting as the respawns are pretty constant and the fights are easy.

Took me about 20 minutes to gather about 15 of these off of the Twilight Dragonkin in Mount Hyjal. Not bad. :)

Obsidian Forest in TwiHi gets my vote. Better vendor trash, 0 chance for scraps, and the best drop rate on scales. Round them up three by three, and almost every time you'll get one or two scales per battle.
However I will agree it can get a bit congested, especially if anyone else there skins. Hyjal would be the second best spot, in my opinion.

Anyone else feel like leatherworkers have been shafted two expansions in a row? I mean, for my blacksmith or engineer, i can get on my alchemist and transmute 15 volatile life into something useful once per day (earth, fire, air, whatever). Or, I can transmute one volatile earth and one elementium bar into 3 pyrite bars. Even if I can't find the pyrite playing PvE, I can still obtain it via a profession skill.
Leatherworking has no transmute equivalent or tradeoff (at least not that I am aware of). For example, we can't transmute 3 savage leather, 3 volatile fire and 3 volatile earth into 10 blackened dragonscales. You just have to grind everything! That and the fact that every freaking design for mail wearers above LW 510 requires 10 blackened dragonscales to make ONE item really turns me off to this profession. I used to love it. Blizzard has made it so tedious I now hate it.
In a way, whether Obsidian Forest, Mt. Hyjal, or Deepholm has the best droprate doesn't matter. Regardless of where you go, Blizzard is shoving this tedious, forced grinding onto all high-end leatherworkers.

Since making it back to the U.S. I have been able to play more of the content including the dungeons and raids. I have found that while running Grim Batol that the dragons in there seem to have an extremely high drop rate of these scales. On average I was getting between 2-3 each time I skinned one. I could walk out of each instance with at least 20 of these at a minimum. If you don't feel like farming them anywhere else you can run Grim Batol and get rep for whichever faction you choose as well as a possibility of gear that you need to get into raids or the new ZA/ZG. So with this one dungeon you have the possibility of killing up to 3 birds with one stone!

I've found the ultimate farming place for both Blackened Dragonscale and Savage Leather is The Pale Roost in Deepholm (just west of Therazane's Throne).
Dragons fall from above pre-stunned for 5 min (breaks when you attack though) with 50k hp. They hit for 3k-ish on mail and are only 83, they do however always drop either leather or dragonscales...seemingly at the same rate as the significantly tougher dragonkin in Twilight Highlands.
I've found you can literally farm nonstop here as a new drake will fall right next to you before you've killed the current one.

@4.2 patch the best spot i have found so far is in Deepholm at The Pale Roost around 36. 18 where the dragons just fall from the air, they are lvl 83 elite with 50k hp
with a ele shamy i can kill around 100-120 per hour, they drop lots of greenis, savage leather and scales and also you loot around 90s to 1g 20s from them
they are kinda instant respawn
edit: if you have done the quest in deepholm that unlocks the daily quest up there then you also have a vendor near and they drop Dragon Flank and its needed for feasts

Actually, this makes the Roost better as you are less likely to get ganked. And, if you are a PVPer and haven't done the Hyjal quests, you can clean up here safe in the knowledge that you can gank just about any opposing player that comes to do the quests (after you've skinned their kills, natch). My hunter hit 85 without doing Hyjal, so doing the Roost I can one-shot the dragonkin for leather and scales, and get some honor points at the same time (insert evil laughter here).

The Obsidian Pyrewings in Obsidian Forest give the best drop rate. If you got the quest to kill them, you can use the chain as much as you want and just never turn it in.
If you already did the quest, you can use a ranged toon to DoT up the Pyrewings as they fly by. If they get shot down, you can loot them.
But if you don't like playing "fetch" with your kills, you can kill them where they spawn if you have a good amount or ranged burst damage. My spot is 59.74 on western edge. You have a good 8-10 seconds before they take off. They spawn low to the ground which gives you more time before they move out of range. They respawn on average 10-15 seconds, with a lull of 1 minute at the most. Very good spot.

Hi here to share my info.
I found the best place to farm for blackened dragonscales. The Pale Roost.
These Stonedrakes have a relatively low amount of HP once they fall from the sky, they share the same general loot table as normal trash elites.
So in total of my 2 hour skinning session there i manage to rake in 220 savage leather and 50 blackened dragonscales
aswell as a bunch of greens and greys that can be vendored for quite alot of gold.
This was done with the Bountyfull bags guild perk.
Happy skinning peeps.

I have just tried The Pale Roost in Deepholm and results are very ugly, drop chance for me is about 5-10%. On the other side, they drop good gold, Dragon Flanks and of course Savage Leather. So for 4.2 at the moment, my best skinning spot for this dragonscale would be Obsidian Forest in Twilight highlands, I had a 45-50% dropchance there( with guild perks). Good luck

I have never been to the pale roost. I have always gotten them from the Obsidian Forest in Twilight Highlands. By the time you have a stack of Blackened Dragonscales you will have about 50 savage leathers, and 25 Dragon Flanks. It's a breeze :)

Obsidian Forest just killed and skinned the viletongues (getting the drakes out of the air for a feral druid is to much effort, for me it is). Got 20 scales in less then 20 minutes..... so i believe that is a good rate and enough viletongues walking around

Obsidian Forest or Pale Roost? Drop rate may be better in OF, but in PR the kill rate is MUCH faster; so fast that I can't loot and skin anywhere near fast enough to keep up with the bodies.
But one problem: The Stone Dragons sometimes aren't falling from the sky. Can anyone tell me how to get them to start falling? Is it quest-related? Have I just been lucky enough to be there when someone else is doing a quest, until now?
Thanks for any help you can give.

I did a test for the best farming spot on this item on Jan 27, 2012, after reading the comments about Pale Roost in Deepholm vs. Sethria's Roost in Hyjal.
TL;DR version
:
iLev 377 rogue playing since vanilla sez deepholm is it, for now, and kinda barely.
Literate version:
Since this is my first time posting something like this here, a bit about me and my toon at present.
Me: Ta-da. Your humble author and tour guide here in Black Dragonscale hell. Playing since vanilla, 41 year old media & polisci student + dad (22) + grandpa (2) + some other stuff in meatspace. This is my second account; I gave my first away shortly before cata hit, rolled this one shortly after. Just started playing again after being off since November.
My toon: Rogue. Combat daggers, 8-32-3, iLev 377, GS 9978, 4/16 DS in raid finder (Morchok 1, Zon'ozz 2, Yor'Sahj 2, Kagara 3). Playing with instant poison on both daggers and crippling on thrown. Random glances at my dps meter showed values anywhere from 5.5k-12k. In both cases fights were very quick; see further details below.
I didn't keep
close
track of other drops.
In Hyjal over 15 minutes, I picked up 21 blackened leather. Mobs are easy to kill but hostile. Lots of leather scraps. I probably had to re-pop Slice and Dice and Recuperate 6 times (*). Don't remember any greens dropping. A few regular leathers, but not many. Farm spot is on the opposite end of the zone from the zone entrance. Mobs are hostile and will aggro on sight. It is very much possible to wipe this farm spot out for maybe 30 seconds or a bit more between the death of the final mob in the area and the spawning of the next one.
In Deepholm over 15 minutes, I picked up 20 blackened dragonscale. I also picked up at least two stacks of leather, and three greens. Mobs are much more plentiful here, and my SND/Recuperate never cooled down even when i took 3-4 mobs at once. Mobs are docile until aggro and easy to kill. Dragons fall from the ground and are stunned for a few seconds on the ground, before they fly away. PROTIP: You can attack them from your mount in the air, and they'll fly down to finish the fight. Zone entrance is centrally located.
Total haul over half an hour: 85 savage leather (at least three dozen through scraps), and 41 Blackened Dragonscale.
Projected half-hour haul @ Hyjal: 42 Blackened Dragonscale, stack of leather mostly from scraps., maybe some greens and stomachs.
Projected half-hour haul @ Deepholm: 40 Blackened Dragonscale, three stacks of leather with no scraps, half-a dozen greens and maybe the same amount of stomachs.
Deepholm it is.

I find the Highland Black Drake in the hills above Crucible of Carnage pit to be the best place to farm these, just running between the two peaks i never have to wait for respawn.
I find Obsidian Forest worse, the mobs are way too spread, slow spawnrate and from what i've seen lower droprate aswell.

I think that the spot in Deepholme is way bettert than Twilight Highlands for farming these, I did one hour in Deepholme using a potion of treasure finding and what I ended up with after the hour is the following:
196 Savage leather
85 Blackened Dragonscales
1 [Pristine Hide
11 stomaches
16 chests (from potion)
13 green items
120 Dragon Flank
122g from junk
+extra gold from looting (they often drop 1g+ each)
so from stomaches and chests I got the following;
13 Volatile life
5 Volatile air
11 Voaltile fire
5 Volatile water
4 Volatile earth
62 Embersilk Cloth
12 Pyrite ore
10 Elementium ore
and after selling everything I ended up with roughly 4k gold, I think this is pretty good for just 1 hour of farming and GL to all of you

I recently was questing in Hyjal on my Skinner and I found that Sethria's roost has 2 types of dragonkin. One normal and then the juggernauts. If you do quite a bit of quests in hyjal you eventually get one called Dissasembly. If you just use the item it gives you on the juggers they have a very good chance for scales.

Just to give you guys some statistics, I went farming for 30mins in Twilight High Lands and got
x91 Savage Leather
x29 Blackened Dragonscale
x4 Volatile Air
x2 Volatile Life
35g worth of trash
I then went to Deepholm by The Pale Roost because every one is talking about the stone drakes and I wanted to see if there good, i got:
x96 Savage Leather
x50 Blackened Dragonscale
x4 Volatile Air
x1 Volatile Life
x1 Volatile Fire
x2 Volatile Water
249g worth of trash
As you can see, in Deepholm you get alot more of everything but the only problem is, is that Deepholm is a HUGE farming spot so it's usually packed and you won't do as good, but in Twilight Highlands its practically empty.

Just farmed an hour on my Worgen rogue skinner with potion of treasure finding and bountiful bags guild perk. Using current auction house prices and includes auction house cut. Could use other professions to combine mats for higher gold making, but I'm just posting raw mats.
196g from loot
105g from vendor trash
13 greens (de'd into 21 lesser celestial essences turned into 7 greater for 350g and 22 hypnotic dust for 42g)
1 blue (going to post it, but may have to de into small heavenly shard 30g)
214 savage leather (750g)
81 blackened dragonscale
(390g)
6 bloated stomachs and 14 treasure chests netted:
50g, 14 volatile life (105g), 7 water (45g), 7 fire (45g), 2 air (42g), 6 earth (6g), 57 embersilk cloth (170g), 7 elementium ore (12g) and 1 pyrite ore (2g)
Grand total for an hour: 2,340g - 99g for potion of treasure finding = 2,241g
This seems right in line with other posts here. Again, you could use a tailor to make bolts of embersilk, use the dust and essences to make enchants, etc to maximize the gold making.
P.S. - I went in with 54 bag slots free, not including the leatherworker satchel slots. Ran out of room with about 10 min left of farming. Lost out on some dragon flank because of it and about 20g. So make sure you go out there with lots of bag space.

Deepholm. The Pale Roost. /fin.
I usually end up with way more Dragonscales than Savage Leather. And the Volatile's and random greens are a nice perk as well. :3 I've tried Obsidian Forest a couple times, but as a combat rogue, The Pale Roost was a lot more profitable for me since I can kill more stuff in a shorter amount of time.
Happy hunting.

If you want to farm these, I recommend Obsidian Forest in Twilight Highlands. The mobs there only drop 2 grey items (not much waste of Bag space) and Have around a 30% chance to drop a Scale. If they do not drop a scale, you can get alot of savage leather.

It looks like 2 main spots for Farming these. But those who go to Deepholm at the Pale Roost should know to go towards the western end of Pale Roost where the Stone Dragons are falling. Thier health is usually almost diminished by the time they fall so u can kill and skin very fast.

For what it's worth, my opinion has to be Twilight Highlands...with the added caveat that you should get and never hand in the quest "Blackout":
一抹黑
Where you get these:
猎龙者之钩
As cited earlier the locale is heavy with Dragonkin, and the drakes flying above. Everything in this area is skinnable.
Use the Wyrmhooks to haul yourself onto one of the flying drakes...you can't be attacked here, but can attack your drake at will.
When it dies, you'll fall to the ground. If you don't have some fall damage mitigation you can take a fair amount of damage, so be aware. Rogues, feral druids, mages quick on the slow fall trigger, all should be fine.
Loot it. Skin it. Take a quick peek around for any close dragonkin....if they are close, kill, loot, and skin. If they aren't, fire up the wrymhooks again and do it over and over and over again. The drakes respawn rate is crazy as they are part of an ongoing event. The dragonkin are often farmed here, so having the wyrmhooks really makes a difference. I can continue to farm even when the dragonkin are being fought over by multiple other skinners.
As a feral druid I created a macro that would target the drakes, use the wyrmhooks and shapeshift me to cat form at the same time, all in one button. It makes farming these ridiculously easy. Lots of Savage Leather, Bloated Stomachs, Dragon Flanks. The occasional green, the occasional chest, and with a Potion of Treasure Finding active some nice additional items/money. Each mob drops around 20-30 silver, too.

For anyone that still needs these in WoD+ content, for whatever reason (mine was to craft a
暮光龙鳞斗篷
Twilight Dragonscale Cloak for an awesome timewalking tank set), I found that there's a spot in the southeast part of the Obsidian Forest - about 68,77 is where I was standing - which is close to where the drakes flying overhead actually spawn.
My lowly geared 92 ele shaman was able to one shot these with Flame Shock/Lightning Bolt, and barely had to move to skin, and certainly didn't have to look for any more mobs. Made getting the 50 I needed quite easy.

Patch 8.1.5, BfA
Farming spot and what to kill:
The absolute best spot to farm is at
Obsidian Forest
,
Twilight Highlands
- atleast if you have a range attack that you can spam.
I did my little farm on my level 114 Marksmanship
hunter
.
You'll have 3 dragons spawning infront of you in the air if you're looking to the southwest.
Sometimes some extra dragons will fly in and there will also be some dragonspawns on the ground fighting the red drakes.
I recommend focusing on the 3 dragons that spawn there and only kill extra dragons if they are flying right above your spot. It'll be pretty hectic, so you might not have time to skin and kill the 3 dragons at the same time.
Tips:
*
This farming might be better if you do it with a friend. You can have one doing the killing and the other one the skinning. The downside is that you will have to share the loot
:)
*
Mother's Skinning Knife
] helps a lot!
The loot:
269
126
178
6 common/green gear items
1 rare trinket -
Voletiles from : water(6), air(4), fire(4), earth(2), life(2)
131 gold from vendoring trash loot
I only needed 126 Blackened Dragonscale, so I stopped farming when I reached that number.
This took about 30 minutes
