This made me think of Flowers for Algernon.

Long story short, it's about a test where a mentally retarded man and a common mouse recieve a brain transplant (or something similar) to make them smart. It is told from the persepective of a journal of the man, who at first writes like the goblins do at the end of the journal here. Over time, he improves, exceeding a normal IQ and becoming a genius. Shortly after, Algernon, the mouse, dies. The man then feels that he is forgetting things, and realizes he is declining back to his orginal mental state. The journal declines again, with randomly capitalized words and less correct punctuation.

edit: of all the words to misspell, I put 'genious'...

It was a pretty good piece of companion lore until the last page when it became a GREAT piece of companion lore.
