This is a reference to the orginal
Eye of the Beast
, a possible quest reward for killing
General Drakkisath
in the
Upper Black Rock Spire
.
This trinket is the possbile caster-version of the Heirloom-Trinkets.

In standard Blizzard tooltip policy, the description is not very clear.
I want to assume that it gives me 2% of my max mana back after a exp. kill. But logically its saying it will give me back health, as "heal" is generally described to explain health and "regeneration" or "regenerate" refers to mana.
Can someone with beta exp tell us for sure?

oh man i wish i had this trinket back in my mage aoe-grinding time.... killing 15 mobs would give you back 30% max mana :)

Does it requires you to get the killing blow? Or does it work in parties as well?

I purchased this item earlier this week, and let me just say, it's my current FAVORITE item in game. There is NO INTERNAL COOLDOWN! Meaning if you AOE a group of 10 mobs that are at least "green" to you, and kill them all at the same time, you will gain 2% of your mana for each mob. 20% of your mana bar would be returned.
At level 80, my moonkin has 16k mana. There hasn't been a time I've gone below 90% mana, even when chain casting 24/7 while I'm farming elementals, etc. This trinket has eliminated my need to drink while farming entirely, and while I'm farming heroics, I usually only drink 1 or 2 waters max per instance.
**Edit, Yes, this trinket works like all other similar trinkets, such as Power Infused Mushroom, etc. You yourself have to get the killing blow on the NPC/player. As a moonkin, I usually end up getting the killing blow on mobs in 5 man heroics anyway... it's just the nature of having 4.7k starfire noncrits, and 10k starfire crits =]
When the servers come back up, I will purchase another of these trinkets to test if I can equip two at the same time to receive double the effect, 4% max mana returned on kill. I've got a truckload of badges with nothing else to buy, and this trinket is not unique, so technically it should work! Fingers crossed.
**Final edit - Yes, if you equip two of these, BOTH PROC when you land a killing blow on a target. At 16.5k mana, that's 658 mana returned every time I kill a mob, with a passive 75 spellpower per trinket. Pretty damn good.
**I'm now using 2x these trinkets to level my shadow priest. At 10k mana @ level 72, I get 400 mana back per mob and haven't had to drink a single time yet.

If you're curious as to how this item scales down with your character's level (for purposes of twinking or general curiosity), you can use the LINK button at the top of this item page to link the item in-game: the WoW client will automatically scale the item stats down to your character's level for you. This works with all the other Heirloom items as well.
Steps in case you are unfamiliar with how to use Wowhead item links:
Click the link button above, there will be a popup window with some automatically highlighted text.
Copy the text (Windows: Ctrl-C, Mac: Cmd-C) and close the popup window.
Open (or switch to) WoW and press Enter to open up your chat dialog.
Paste the code into the box (Windows: Ctrl-V, Mac: Cmd-V) and press Enter.
A message in white text will appear in your chat log followed by an item link.
You can click this link to view the details and can Ctrl-click it to view it on your character.

is it just me or does this combined with the other trinket which restores health seem like an unstoppable combo for aoe farming?

Picked this up for my level 32 mage while AoE grinding. I was receiving 47 mana per kill @ level 32 with 118 Intellect. I highly recommend this to any mage AoE farming or grinding. I will be grabbing the health one next.

Can anyone confirm whether it's necessary to land the killing blow for this trinket to proc? I group with my wife on a Recruit-A-Friend account and she likes to land the kill with Shadowburn. I assume it's like most trinkets and talents like Spirit Tap in that you must be the player who lands the blow, but what about pets? If I'm a 'flic lock using my Felpuppy and a shadow bite lands the kill, do I get gypped?
I'd like to find out before I drop 50 badges on it... 2% isn't much mana, so the proc would need to be very reliable to make it worth the investment.

My brother was running my alt through SM Cath and as he killed mobs, I recieved NO mana back. I made sure to have spent some mana so I could check and I did do some damage to the mobs as well. This leads me believe that you must have done the killing blow in order to recieve the mana back.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no item in the game which rewards a bonus for assisting or helping kill a target, making this consistent with all other similar items, spells, and procs.
Bonus honor. Bonus honor is rewarded for honor kills, not killing blows. There is a difference. It's a reasonable query, I don't see why everyone is getting bent out of shape about it. The item says "whenever you kill a target that yields experience
or honor
." It's not unreasonable to ask if this will proc when you get an honor kill or if it only procs with killing blows.

does this also work for healers in the group when a mob is killed? i wouldn't have done any dmg to it and certainly not the killing blow... :-s

This scales well into the high levels and will probably at the earliest trade it for something like the
Cannoneer's Fuselighter
, so it's a great investment.

For those people who like this on your level 80 for the mana return from kills, one thing to note is that the
Oracle Talisman of Ablution
works the same way, except it provides +5% mana per kill instead of 2%, meaning you get 10% per kill with two equipped.

3.1 patch notes state that all heirloom items that grant spellpower will be substantially increased for all levels below 58.
Heirloom Items: The bonus spell power granted by these items has been redesigned to provide substantially more benefit for players lower than level 58.

Probably better for sending to alts than using in raiding (maybe useful for healers). But as a caster DPS, I generally only have mana troubles on boss fights and this won't help unless you kill boss adds.

So let me get this straight.
It's not unique, so you can equip it twice and have 4% of your mana returned per mob?
No internal cooldown
procs when killing totems?
Glitched or golden for farmers?

What this trinket is for:
step 1: roll a mage.
step 2: equip 2 of these.
step 3: AoE grind with blizzard.
step 4: ...
step 5: profit.
seriously you can easily kill 12+ mobs per AoE grind. then you gain just under half of your maximum mana back. and the mana required for the blizzards to kill them - regen is roughly half your mana bar. the only time you'll have to stop is when you run out of mobs.

I like how this scales with both level and gear. The higher level you are, the higher SP you get. The higher mana your gear gives, the more mana you get per kill.

As Opposed to what Havok just said... Are you Implying that u get the benefit on a lvl 80 while grinding or did u get the benefit on a below 80.... Since it does state Restores 2% of your maximum mana every time you kill a target that yields
Experience
or
Honor
... Would just like you to clarify that in case ur saying u were grinding on a non-80 as opposed to on a 80 which cannot get experience... TY

<3 This dual trinket combo. Hopefully in the future they do not make it magically unique thus forcing us that are using two to waste 50 badges. But as long as it lasts it lasts.
Personally I am looking forward to using these on my Goblin Elemental Shaman when Cataclysm releases, along with the other Heirloom items (and new ones I am sure they will release in the future, like a Helm/Leggings and shields I am assuming)
For now though, it is a little ridiculous lvling with them on my Warlock, Level 36 Warlock with 205sp and gaining 4% mana back with trinkets + 15% back from Imp SoulDrain = absolutely OP.
Back to slaughtering alliance :)

The entire list of spellcaster heirloom's are as follows:
Dignified Headmaster's Charge
- 65
Emblem of Heroism
or 95
Champion's Seal
Tattered Dreadmist Mantle
- 40
Emblem of Heroism
or
Champion's Seal
Tattered Dreadmist Robe
- 40
Emblem of Heroism
or 60
Champion's Seal
Discerning Eye of the Beast
- 50
Emblem of Heroism
or 75
Champion's Seal
As you'll probably want 2
Discerning Eye of the Beast
it will make the total cost:
245
Emblem of Heroism
or 365
Champion's Seal
Happy farming :).

Does anyone know if this procs when your
group
kills mobs? If it does, this would be fantastic for leveling healers by way of random instances. Could anyone confirm?
Edit:
I found elsewhere that it does
not
proc with group kills. I think they should change the wording to "when you land a killing blow".

Not to be a forum troll or anything, but usually when an ability/spell/etc. involves your group, it says so in the tooltip. For instance: "Whenever you or anyone in your group kills"
Purely grammatical, it says quite clearly "Whenever YOU KILL a target that etc", which should make it clear that it must be (mostly) your effort that brought the mob down. Being a helluva dps doesn't count on this effort-thingy ;)

You yourself have to get the killing blow on the NPC/player.
Now, that sucks a bit. I was hoping for some extra mp5 on my resto druid whilst running random dungeons, no wonder it didn't work.

If you play about with the slider bar, you'll notice that there are significant steps up in the amount of spell power provided at 58 and 68 to aid your transition into Outlands or Northrend.

I really do think they should edit this item to return mana if your group gets a kill rather than u landing the killing blow. I'm leveling a priest as heals through LFG system and my god would that make a drastic difference.

I recently made the choice between two heirloom trinkets for a new Mage I'm leveling -
Discerning Eye of the Beast
vs.
Swift Hand of Justice
I picked the
Discerning Eye of the Beast
for the simple reason that haste tends to diminish over time as you level.
Swift Hand of Justice
hasn't been made into a consistent amount of haste that stays the same over all levels (percentage wise). At
level 9
this trinket would grant my Mage
7.8% haste
, then at
level 19
it would be worth
2.89% haste
.
Once I reach Northrend the amount of haste gained steadily goes down from
2.9%
to
1.95%
which means it'll almost definitely be replaced by another trinket found while questing. If i'm gonna spend 50 badges on a heirloom I don't want it to be replaced before I'm 80.
If you're facing the same decision as me for a caster trinket to level, go with the raw spellpower which will always increase it's contribution to your spells as you level.

I have question; item text " whenever you kill a target that yields experience or honor ". In level 80, you no longer gain exp or honor if you keep killing mobs in dungeons. Is this item becames useless in level 80 ?

I was very happy to discover that (A) there are heirloom trinkets, and (B) that they stack. As a warlock, I don't necessarily need the mana return, thanks to Improved Life Tap. The spell power, however, is a very nice bonus, and will definitely come in handy for leveling.

This stops working at lvl 80. It wont even give you +64 int. Neither will it work at lvl 81 and above.

It stops scaling the int at level 80 - but does it also stop returning mana after level 80?

As far as heirlooms are concerned I see trinkets being one of the last to aquire, due to the lack of XP bonus, however, once your set with the rest having one of these for a balance or holy priest running BG'S Pre level 60 along with the PvP trinket is a nice combo, keeps your mana pool up, but you still get the Resiliance offered via the PvP trinket.
Although this is not necessarily true for any other Pre-60 BG class even massive mana pools can be drained, so having that extra mana ticking away, seriously adds to survivability once you have run low.
Some may scoff at my comment, as you would be long dead before running out of mana. Not if you are a tiny goblin hidden away healing like a mad man. I run low quite a lot. Some fast heavy mana disc speced holy shields, coupled with multiple PoH, with renews dropped in for good measure, can turn turn a loss into a win.
Even with nearly 8k mana pool, unbuffed, at level 56, mana will evebtually run dry. Although untested i'm finally in a position to get this trinket, and fingers crossed this will be excellent.
Apart from the above situation the added 2% mana increase per kill, is not too great, as mana is not an issue in PvE, especially if you glyph for spirit tap while doing non-PvP related game play.
The extra int stat is an excellent addition of and in itself, trinks with decent int Pre-60 are hard to find.

I notice a lot of people noting the lack of any return on this trink after level 80...it's an Heirloom, it specifically states 1-80, it can be transferred to any alt, does not suffer form durability dmg.
Heirlooms are one of the best investments you can make, there is nothing else that holds it's value and usefulness like these items do. Honestly, the cost to get one is insignificant when you weigh up the long term usage of this item.
All our best gear now, will be junk come the release of Pandara, all that work, time and effort offers just a temporary eliteism. Only to be vendored, DC'ed, or saved for transmogrify.
Heirlooms remain useful infinitely, pure awesomeness.
