It can crit, and does so frequently for me (on my shaman, who has fairly high crit, and +5% to lightning crit, which might factor in).

It backfires frequently. I would estimate about a 10% backfire rate. Damages you with a lightning bolt from above in addition to the target.

Overall, it's the only decent addition to engineering. A 1 sec cast on a 1 sec GCD for a high amount of damage adds a decent amount of burst.

-The rocket enchant to gloves is lackluster because it's on the GCD.

-The haste enchant to gloves is fairly minor, but has some value.

-The rocket boots enchant is okay, but you miss out on the passive run speed from an enchant if you don't get a meta for it.

-The parachute cloak requires giving up a stat enchant (in that case, swap in the actual parachute cloak with half the cooldown).

Indeed this item can crit. So far I've seen mine crit over 5k, as jason15ju said. In case anyone wonders, it only hits one target, and can be used while you have global cooldowns as a little "boost". Nice little trinket, aint gonna unequip it for a long time. It makes leveling easier aswell, especially if your out of mana, and the mob is on low hp.

Little Info About the DPS on this: Now, if my math are correct, this should give you a ~40-50 DPS increase if you pop it on every cooldown, assuming it's not affected by miss rate.

The math for this conclusion are:

(2610 + 3190) / 2 = 2900 average damage per use.
2900 / 59 = 49,15 average DPS, excluding the 1 second cast time from the cooldown, and assuming it doesn't backfire.
If we try to factor the backfire in, which taking for granted that is 10%, and assuming it doesn't do any damage at all while backfiring, which is the worst case scenario, you lose ~4 DPS from it.

Optional: If you're a retribution paladin (only factored this because I play one), you can raise the damage by 9% since you will most likely have 3 stacks of vengeance up -- and should have before using it:
2900 * 1.09 = 3161 average damage per use.
3161 / 59 = 53,57 average DPS.

If you want you can add to Vengeance, Avenging Wrath for burst damage:
2900 * 1.29 = 3741 average damage per use
3741 / 59 = 63,40 average DPS with Avenging Wrath and 3x Vengeance up.

If my math are not correct -- just using common sense here, or almost common :p -- feel free and please correct it!

P.S My math are definitely not correct since I just realised that I didn't factor the crit rate in.

Ok, at lvl 80 this trinket is alright but consider using this trinket at 60?..........

lol ya, I know your thinking about it too.

Your able to learn Grand Master Engineering at lvl 60 which means your able to make this item, and since it doesn't require a level your able to use it, Also you can drop Eng if you wanted and still be able to use it.

Now, think how extremly powerful you'll be in 60 bracket. Consider that most players will have around 4k - 6k hp. 1 lucky crit from this and you can pretty much 1 shot a person every cooldown if it doesn't back fire.

It's physical school, so interrupts have no effect. However, attack pushback, mind numbing, and I would assume curse of tongues affect the cast time. This makes sense as it scales with spell spell.

I'm not sure where it gets its spell crit because I don't think it works with shatter. My crit is low right now though so I would have to spend some time testing it.

I signed up to wowhead just to tell you all about this trinket.

While it may not appear that great on paper in a raiding situation, the real power of this trinket is that using it, is not on the global cooldown.

I'll give you an example, me being a mage I have found alot of incredibly powerful combinations that show the power of this trinket.

As frost, of course the standard way to kill someone has always been to shatter them with frostbolt + icelance.

However, with this trinket.... the rotation can become Frost bolt + Icelance, then, as the ice lance is casted, one global cooldown must pass before you can cast again, however, you can IMMEDIATELY charge this trinket. Not only does it make your shatter that much more damaging, the lightning it shoots will instantly hit your target, and all 3 sources of damage will hit within miliseconds. And just for an example, personally a standard shatter is 5800 frost bolt crit, 3800 ice lance crit, then this guy usually hits for 3000, crits for 5000 (not that often however).

I have found tons of instances where I am on the global cooldown, wanting to put damage into a target but I have nothing. Other examples would be the global cool down right after I cast deep freeze, if you play as Arcane barrage/pyro you can do Arcane barrage > This trinket > PoM Pyro > Arcane barrage, and let me tell you, people have to check their combat logs after they get hit with that much damage.

To conclude I believe this trinket is amazing for mage pvp. The fact that it is not on the global cooldown makes all the difference in the world. It gives you the option to add more burst into your combinations, which is so much more than "add x amount of this stat, chance on hit to do something" that most other trinkets offer.

Apparently they decided that buffing anything Engineers make would be too out of character, so they canceled the cast time change.

As of 3.0.8:

The trinket is still Bind-On-Pickup, but it now also requires Engineering (425), meaning that if you have dropped engineering, you will no longer be able to use the trinket. On a related note, the similar Gnomish Death Ray still does not have any Engineering requirement to use. (I, for one, found this trinket alone to be worth re-leveling engineering to 425. Others will beg to differ, I'm sure.)

The trinket's cooldown has been reduced from 1.5 minutes to 1.0 minutes.

The trinket still has a 1.0 second cast time, but it can be cast while moving.

The trinket can still be used while the GCD is hot, and it still triggers the GCD after the cast is finished and the bolt is fired.

The trinket can still be used in arenas.

The trinket is still an excellent choice for just about any class who benefits from ranged, on-demand burst damage (ie. PvP healers and melee DPS).

This trinket is extremely useful for melee classes.

For example, when I was playing on my rogue I was attacked by a druid. As usual he engaged me in melee for a bit, then decided he needed a HoT, so he rooted me and tried to do the normal kiting technique druids do against rogues. However, once he changed form to escape melee, I used deadly throw, fired a rocket out of my gloves, and then killed him with a nice 5k crit from my lightning generator.

Later, a mage started to attack me. I got up close, but eventually he managed to freeze me and started doing his blink kiting techniques. Again, I threw my dagger, fired a rocket, and zapped him with the lightning generator from range and finished him.

It might not be the best dps trinket for all you casters out there, but for melee it really adds another dimension to your attacks.

Just built this for my rogue and I tested it with Hunger For Blood up and it indeed hit harder. 3419 and it crits as well. However it does not use cold blood ;-<

However it does have an occasional kickback. Mine critted for 5159 but hit me for 5824

As it currently is, 3.0.9, it's

Seems to backfire about 20%-ish of the time

The worst part is (This is why I'm happy to finally be rid of it, replaced with Meteorite Whetstone) that the backfire can also crit, which is horrible as a rogue, especially at level 75-ish when it backfire-crits you for 6500. Yes, it can crit that high, so keep that in mind.

As a Rogue, I liked to have a macro that was just
/use Insert-Glove-Name-Here (Assuming your gloves have the Pyro-Rocket tinker)
/use Gnomish Lightning Generator
In that order, as the GLG uses the CGD & has cast time, but the Pyro-rocket is instant and off GCD.
It's something nice when your at 0-10 energy, something to hit when you can't do anything else.

That said, it's still fun and great for PvP, keeping another Rogue in combat, whatever. Still worth it, and a true engineer will at least use it for a while... Or until it causes their death, either or.

(P.S. this thing killed me once at a training dummy, was testing DPS as Combat (Normally Subtlety), and my health was at about 4k, and I thought that should be fine for one more backfire. Next time CD's up, hit my macro, BZZZZZZZ!, backfire-crit for 5k! Luckily a nearby Paladin rezzed me, felt pretty stupid =D Just keep the potential-suicide in mind)

Here are some facts I've collected about this trinket:

Engineering 425, no Gnomish requirement.
Binds on Pickup
Range - 30 yards
Backfire rate - around 10%, so very low
Backfire hits you and the target for a random amount each within the damage range.
Lightning bolt does Not chain
IS Enhanced by Metamorphosis (20% dmg boost)
IS Enhanced by Curse of Elements (and I would imagine similar effects)
Can critically strike
Can proc Lightweave Embroidery

This is a great trinket for BGs unless you get particularly unlucky. Being able to throw out a 4.5k+ blast with this trinket that carries a Lightweave proc for 1.2k - 2k has earned me many killing blows.

This little trinket is responsible for some devastating burst damage, especially in BG's. Enemies barely have time to react with this synched to my explosive shots :).

I can definitely confirm that this item, in fact, can cause critical strikes.

Both on your primary target and while backfiring, independantly.

I've gotten as high as 6 984 damage on a crit with this thing. Note, though, that I'm in fact a level 69 Retribution-Paladin "Twink", and do not possess Avenging Wrath. I did this with Berserking from WSG up.

in my experience, it normally backfires for a higher amount than it caused damage from. But that may just be my perception, and in any event, this is offset with criticals on both ends.

It seem to follow Spell Critical chance, rather than physical, but this is just a rough estimation, as I have 33% phys. crit, and ~22% spell.

It's an incredibly fun and intriguing item to use. Dangerous? Of course. That's part of its charm.
But i must say; If you kill yourself with the backfire, and get your own killing blow, you WILL not be credited a death on the scoresheets of BGs, but it DOES account for the sake of achievements. (ie, Wrecking Ball; Iron Man)

Use at your own risk. But don't worry. "It's safe!"

Hunters in Aspect of the Viper will have the damage halved, both to their target and to their own self when it backfires. Sixty percent damage (self and enemy) if they specced into 11th point Beast Mastery talent Aspect Mastery. This will also regenerate a portion of mana as though you were attacking physically.

Very LAMEweapon in 2v2 pvp, we faced 5 times DK/Pala both had em.. My pala didn't even got time to bubble when dk first hits 6 icy touches and then both of them uses the generator and pewpew my friend is dead :( Should get out of arenas imo.

This is my new favorite trinket. I have a level 80 death knight and I use this trinket while farming, doing dailies--anything that involves even level mobs or lower. It's a great utility for pulling if death grip or death coil is unavailable. Besides, it's a big bolt of LIGHTNING so the cool factor is there. It does crit. I estimate it backfires about 10-15% of the time. I wouldn't recommend equipping this for heroics or raids. It's not worth losing the stat another trinket can offer, but in terms of utility this is a solid addition to engineering.

I didn't see this in the most recent PTR notes, but when I logged in last night right before server restart, the damage nerf had gone through AND 84 crit rating was added to the item, granting the same crit rating as Mirror of Truth. Not sure why that wasn't in the patch notes and if it is here to stay or not though.

The backfire rate I've experienced with this item is absolutely horrific. I've only counted the last 30 uses and it backfired 13 times (hits both you and your target for the same amount). I know that's an extremely small sample but the reason I even decided to keep track in the first place was because I noticed it hitting me so frequently in battlegrounds...

Blizzard totally screwed up since they didnt remove thease, Sonic Boosters or any of the Grand master engieering gadgets from level 60 players, when the level requirement to it is level 65.

Also, keep this in mind for alts, as at lvl65 you can crank up engineering to 450!
Gnomish Lightning Generator + Noise Machine or Sonic Booster + Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket makes leveling a whoooole lot easier and faster.

To make things complete, at engineering 350 (lvl55) you can use Saronite Bomb, which are now dirt cheap (24-40 bombs per craft).

And ofcourse at lvl62 and lvl72 the epic headpieces.

I did a little testing with this on a training dummy and it seems that because it is nature damage, it is affected by spells like curse of elements. now I have set up a macro like so:

/cast Curse of Elements
/use Gnomish Lightning Generator

You can also use either

/use 13
/use 14

If /use Gnomish Lightning Generator doesn't work (I'm at work and cant check right now)

That way you curse just before the GLG goes off and is affected by the extra 13% and resistances

A note: Cloak of Shadows does NOT mitigate the possible backfire it seems.

This thing backfires frequently and can even crit yourself! While not criting your opponent to boot.
This has even landed a killing blow on myself once. The "It's Safe!" is correct if your comparing it to a speeding bus with AIDS encrusted spikes on the front.

have this on my rogue i would say, don't spend to much time or money on this if u don't realy need it. i would say that hand-mounted pyro rocket is better:

1) no chance on taking damage

2) same damage

3) less cooldown

4) longer range

5) doesn't take an item slot

btw: if u have both and u use one of them the other will have a short cooldown

From what I recall spell power also helps with this item. I was using it earlier as a warrior and only did around 1-2k from about 6-7 uses. While my friend would hit constant 3-4k damage amounts as a ret paladin. Maybe I'm just not lucky with this item but I still find it very usefull for quick burst damage.

Im leveling an elemental shaman in bgs and this trinket coupled with the hand rocket is amazing. i have it macrod with my lightning bolt and i can punch out so much burst.

flame shock, lava burst crit, chain lightning/trinket = 11 000 damage instantly (by the time my lava burst gets to the target, my chain lightning/trinket are hitting him). makes for a good show. and thats without my chain lightning/trinket critting.

and if that doesnt kill him (im not 80) round 2 will commence in 10 seconds (the hand rocket and trinket have a 10 second cooldown between them)

Some facts:

1700 average hit / 2700 average critical hit.
About a 5% chance to damage you as well as the target.
Chain lightning animation, no bounces though.
Might use your critical chance, but mine is about 12% and this crit about 7% of the time.
While questing, made about 6% of my damage.

Here's an amazing macro for priests. This macro will put a shield on yourself and then use the lightning generator on your target. If it damages you as well you take little/no damage and if it doesn't you still have a shield!
