With the increased spirit and intellect and lack of +hit this is more healing focused than its counterpart, the greatstaff of the nexus.

This is not to say that ONLY healers would get use out of this, it would just be a better choice if you plan on healing. With the change to spell power it's not as simple to differentiate which would be better for healing or dps

This is BS I see the healers in the comments for every WOTLK staff with any crit or haste saying the staff is better for them then for blah blah blah dps class and that just isn't true. There is nothing on this stamped "healer" or "dps" the only ones dps should have right to over healers are staves with +hit other then that both should get to roll.

I think dps classes would be better suited with a staff that gives them +hit and +crit. That's not to say that they couldn't make good use of this staff too, but I think it's pretty obvious that healing classes will put this to better use. Just because it has haste does not mean that it automatically goes to dps.

This is arguably an equal, if not better, entry-level raiding staff for healing priests and druids compared to Charmed Cierge. ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=39394 )

In terms of stat comparison, this staff gains +22 int, at a cost of -21 spirit and -1 haste rating.

With the changes to Shadowpriests (and the addition of Survival Hunters and Ret Paladins to their utility niche) and Replenishment ( http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=57669 ), the extra 22 int on this staff converts to 330 mana, or roughly 5mp5 via replenishment and 5 effective mp5 from the mana pool increase, assuming a 5 minute boss fight (330 mana / 60 5sec ticks in a 5 minute fight). Based on the patch 2.4 changes which created a beneficial relationship between spirit and intellect, intellect gains increase the relative power of your spirit. Additionally, there are other regen abilities that factor in the size of your mana pool--i.e. Hymn of Hope (and I believe shadowfiend was changed to work in this manner as well).

The 21 bonus spirit on Charmed Cierge generates roughly 4-7 mp5 i5sr, these figures change though based on gear. Additionally, priests and druids have talents (and in the case of humans: a racial passive) which act as a multiplier on spirit--in addition to talents which convert a percentage of spirit into spellpower. Should you find yourself typically in groups or raids without Replenishment utility, the independant regen from spirit will likely outweigh the effective regen from more int and a larger mana pool, especially if any considerable amount of time is spent outside the five second rule.

Ultimately these staves are very nearly equal, however for general raid groups who give some attention to group makeup, this staff seems to be the better choice for mana regen based on the current iteration of regen mechanics and--at the end of the day--this one only requires 4 other people to get.

at the end of the day it depends on what you need...healers and dps can roll on a item that will benefit most..for example if a lock is hit cap they could use the staff also...the gift and the curse to wolk is that casters will be rolling on alot of the same crap just because it has more spell power..i would just say make sure u will have the biggest benefit from a weapon or item and not steal from some one that can really use it

I would love too know why his would only be a Healer Staff, the next staff that can actualy compare too this is as mention in the first post and you can only receive that in a 10Man Raid. So am i going too pass on this staff if it drops for me, Nope im gona roll against healer. The Spell power will help me more then having Hit Rating on it, and i rather have some hast on my gear for Raiding, Faster casting mean more Dmg and DPS on boss. I thought the reason behind Wotlk when they change everything too spell power was so we dont wast Epic anymore that a drop can be used for more then 1 class. Too me it's starting too look like Healer are not gona let Caster actualy roll on anything now, Lmao no no everything is there. Sorry but now Spell power is Spell Power too my eye will help my Dmg and DPS over all

Saying spirt is useless for dps is stupid, nothing is useless for anybody just less beneficial. As a warlock 69+ spirit = ~20+ spellpower, and haste for that matter is good for any spellcaster.

This is the reason why you mages and locks and even boomkins can't find decent healers now.

I am a holy priest, a good one, and if i was going to somewhere like heroic oculus, i would take an all melee group, or a guild group only.

Reason being, sure i can see why you'd want this. But the spirit makes this a holy priest or resto druid staff. Priest regen is pretty much all int+spirit now. Very few items have mp5 on them, and for me spirit = priest/druid. hit = mage/lock.

I wouldnt argue it with you though, i just wouldnt take you with me tbh. I remember a priest friend of mine losing something along the lines of "holy bands of illustrious light" to a mage before because it was better than what they had.

Is just not worth taking casters along now, seeing how easy it is for a healer to get a group and how melee can do the job just fine.

If you're a mage and you are thinking about rolling against a priest/shaman/druid or even a warlock for this staff, I am here to tell you that you are wrong, and here's why:

1) Spirit is only useful to Arcane-specced mages, period. Even if the change to Pyromaniac goes through in 3.0.8, you'd still be a fool to get spirit. That said, if you're raiding/PvE'ing in any capacity as an Arcane mage, you're still jacked up because FFB puts out way more dps, and if you don't have the crit to support FFB, frost is better dps than arcane.

2) Ignoring the spirit problem, haste isn't that great for FFB mages anyway (it's the lowest rated of the 3 damage stats), especially since:

3) The "available alternative" (Flameheart Spell Scalpel(Rep reward from Kirin Tor - Revered)+Ward of the Violet Citadel(25 Emblems of Heroism)) requires about 6-8 heroic runs (I.e., a day's worth of instances), and is perfectly itemized for mages. Not to mention the fact that this will hold you until late Naxx, since the first upgrades to these two items drop off Patchwerk.

4) You'd be screwing them out of the best staff (druids/priests for the most part) they can get pre-raid.

The only way you should roll on this staff as a mage is if you're rocking some quest greens or something and there's no priests/shamans/druids/warlocks in the group that want it. Otherwise, just relax and know that in a few more runs of any heroic instances, you'll have what you need to get the best mage weapon combination pre-Patchwerk, without the hassle of hoping something drops.

3.0.8 EDIT: Arcane seems to be the top DPS spec now (assuming good raid buffs and that the "arcane shatter" bug doesn't get fixed for the foreseeable future), but spirit is still a pretty crappy stat. At any rate, this post can at the very least serve to underline the fact that keeping one's self aware of class changes/mechanics, personal testing, and empirical data from more updated and reliable sources than Wowhead comments is the best way to remain at the top of one's game.

One thing to add here:

This is the only non-wand epic weapon that drops in a 5-man heroic that's wieldable by a warlock. Other than that, you're stuck with grinding Kirin Tor rep to get the scalpel. Just FYI.

This staff is not just good for healers, It has a little less stam than you'd want for a warlock but thats made up by the hit rating and spell power. Plus you can put an enchant on this for a little extra stam. This staffs almost as good as 'The turning tide' which has a little extra spell power and crit rating, but then again it is a 1 handed weapon so you could get an off hand item as well. :P

Well most people think Disc and Spirit dont go very well together because of the whole 5SR which we are not outside of much. But Blizzard in their effort to eliminate any unique style of gearing/playing has nerfed the mana we get outside, and buffed Meditation from 30% to 50%.

So adding more spirit on your disc priest is a VERY good idea seeing how Rapture is getting nerfed/changed (Depends who you ask.).

I'm a lock with Demonic Aegis 3/3 and Glyph of Life Tap.That should convert 40%+20% of my spirit into SP. If I can become hit cap with this staff on, is the MH/OH combo still better than this?

I personally believe it to be more of a healer staff than dps however it is good for both specs, never tried the occulus the whole time ive been level eighty and we downed it first time good fight at the end nice and originall really easy with 2 red 2 amber and 1 green drake and staff dropped first time nice good instance all should try it :D

The worst thing about this great staff, in both stats and looks, is that it drops in Oculus from the last boss. Of all heroics, this is the instance where most failing PUGs break up due to one or more incompetent players, either early in the instance or on the last boss.

If you're serious going after the staff, you're best to round up people you know and doing the instance together.

I agree with the comment above about PUGs. I got lucky on my second time around with a uber group that was farming Stone Shards for the mount. They let me keep all the loot that dropped and this staff dropped on the last boss. And by the way, even with this totally gear maxed group we died on the last boss the first time around because all are equal on those drakes. And on the second battle it was the little old PUGger that was the only one left standing, lol.

Anyway I wanted to post because my healing gear was the War Mace of Unrequited Love and Prison Manifest in off-hand. The two-handed combo gives 45 more spell power. On the other hand, the staff gives you a 2.5% increase in haste and 35 more stamina. Interestingly, mana regeneration was identical. I think that the numbers on the staff tooltip are wrong because equipping the staff actually increased my spirit over the two-handed combo. Maybe it's a talent I have. It's strange.

Which one is better really depends on the healing your are doing and your druid talents. If you are more of a tank healer the staff is better because you will be doing more direct heals with healing touch, the extra haste could be critical. But if you are doing using Rejuv or wild growth a lot then the extra spell power is better. Another thing to consider is that it is much easer to enchant and gem for spell power than for haste.

One final thought. The staff is awesome looking compared to that stupid mace.

I recently leveled a druid alt, and since he's going to be a Boomkin, I've got to say I'd love to get this staff for him. However, the truth is I don't hold much hope I will since The Occulus is pretty much the least run instance in my server, so I'm almost guaranteed to get a naxx 10/25 staff before I ever get to roll on this one.

It's a nice, good looking staff, shame about people not being able to faceroll the last boss in The Occulus I guess ...

my question is if somone who just dinged 80 should buy Titansteel Spellblade in 600g (mets cost) and use Ward of the Violet Citadel for a off hand (25 emblem of heroism) or just get Staff of Draconic Combat (heroic oculus last boss drop) or just wait for naxx or OS drop and than ull get a good wepon without paying 600g and 25 emblem of heroisms so my question is if the blade and off hand are better in alot from the staff? or i should just wait for naxx or OS drop i am an arcane mage raiding spec.

I' am sorry, as resto I pass on any piece that has hit on it, I expect dps to do the same when something without hit drops.....common sense and common courtesy, not only that it just doesn't make sense, something like this drops and isn't anywhere near the ideal for my spec/class why be a #$%^blocker....the right piece will drop eventually beside as a warlock for instance are you going to spend 400 plus gold to enchant a weapon that really doesn't suite your class?

To all the people that says this isn't a lock staff..... let me tell you a little bit about how I aquired it and why I think it is a lock staff.

It dropped.

The Unspeakable Secret is a better option as a starter weapon. Easier to obtain than this one. Although, the moment I turned 80 the very 1st run I had in The Forge of Souls, the very 1st drop I got looked identical to this, the Blood Boil Lancet.

This is unconfirmed but, for those looking for the transmog, here's what happened to me:

- DOZENS of runs killing Eregos for WEEKS without using the drakes (hitting him from the floor): not a single staff or weapon dropped. (I even thought it was bugged like the Fluctuating Cloak or the Ebonsteel Spaulders and just gave up on it).

- One run killing him on top of the emerald drake (heroic): the staff drops immediately.

Again, not entirely sure about this, but the staff is called "of draconic combat" indeed :P
