Arguably the best pre-tier 4 tanking legs out there. Pick these up instead of your Dungeon set legs - the set bonuses for 3.5 are on 2 and 4 pieces, leaving you available to grab these as well while still keeping set bonuses.

Paladin tanks, since you're getting to Revered anyway, see about picking up (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=29185) as well.

put 3 solid star of elune's at 12 stam each for a total of 105 sta (you'll lose the 6 block value socket bonus).

If you use the clefthide leg armor mentioned above thats 135 total stamina!

I got these today, and getting Karazhan now that I have my 'pre-raiding' stuff all together.

I spent very much on these legs.

I got the following on these gems legs ;

Legguards of the Resolute Defender vs Timewarden's Leggings

Timewarden's has 31 more armor even after +armor from the agility on Resolute (negligible).
Timewarden's has 15 more stamina (good).

for Resolute.
23 agility (+.69% crit and +.76% dodge @70 for Warrior)
+ def. rating 31 (13 defense skill)
+ parry rating 20 (+.89% parry @70)

for Timewarden's.
3 sockets w/ +6 block value bonus (red, yellow, blue)
+ def. rating 18 (7 defense skill)
+ dodge rating 11 (+.58% dodge @70)

But then if you use only green gems which are very cheap, you can get a +9 stamina blue gem, a +6 defense yellow gem, and +3 str/+4 stam purple gem for a total of:

+28 more stam than Resolute
+6 block value than Resolute

-7 defense than Resolute (-2 defense skill (because of how rounding down works))
-%1.07 percent of mitagation from block/parry than Resolute
-%.69 crit from agility than Resolute

Basically, it's mitigation vs stamina. I'd rather take +280 HP from one slot because from other gear I am easily at 45%+ mitigation. Also, the better gems you use, the more stamina you can get from Timewarden's.

I crunched the numbers on these 2 pieces myself just now. I was VERY disapointed in the avoidance on Timewarden's on my protection paladin--I don't see you mention it here but did you factor in dodge from agility? Resolute Defender's 23 AGI + Clefthide's 10 is netting me 1.32 dodge% (~25 dodge rating!!) by my Tankpoints readout.

My post here is basically for Protection Paladins. Alot of paladins have commented that these are great because they don't waste any budgeting on STR, but I would argue they are not so great for most Paladins, because most of us have a steep mountain to climb when it comes to reaching uncrushable status, thanks to our active blocking ability being inferior to warriors. That being said:

**Short Version**

Most tankadins beyond 490 defense live by the mantra "dodge rating is king" but you can fill this piece with +8 dodge rating rubies and it won't touch the combined dodge from AGI, solid parry rating and innate avoidance from high +DEF that can be found on Legguards of the Resolute Defender.

**Medium Version**

If you, like me, are a pally still trying to reach that fabled 102.4% avoidance uncrushable status while active blocking (takes alot more avoidance gear for a paladin than warrior) I would STAY AWAY from Timewarden's. They'll cost you several nights rep grinding, 30g to buy, much more gold on top of that for the gems--to upgrade these to ~1-2% less avoidance and a chunk more HP than Resolute Defender's, which are a free (easy!) quest reward.

Conversly, if you are deep into uncrushable territory, by all means grab these and jam them full of +12 STA gems for a ton of extra HP! -- just don't automatically assume these are "the best pre-raid tanking legs" because you might be screwing yourself out of alot of avoidance, especially if you are a paladin with our (realitively) gimpy shield block ability.

**Long Version**

*Disclaimer: Your stats my vary, due to base racial stats, combat rating rounding down, your proximity to avoidance caps, etc. I took most of my data readings from TankPoints' hit table calculator, butt naked, plugging in the stats for each item in question. That being said, you can safely imagine a " ~ " next to all these values to represent approximately!

*Note: I'm also assuming both Items will use the cheaply made/purchased Clefthide Leg Armor.
*Final Note: when I speak of "Avoidance" I'm strictly speaking % towards uncrushable status!

Here's the data:

Legguards of the Resolute Defender
Armor: 942 + 66 from AGI = 1008 = 7.99% Dmg Reduction
STA: 42 + 30 = 72
AGI: 23 +10 = 33
DEF: 31R = ~13 = 0.52% (M/D/P/B/Cr)

Block: 0R + 0.52% from DEF = 0.52%
Dodge: 0R + 1.32% from AGI + 0.52 from DEF = 1.84%
Parry: 20R (~0.84%) + 0.52% from DEF = 1.36%

Summary:
720 HP
Dmg Reduc: 7.99%
Miss: 0.52%
Dodge: 1.84%
Parry: 1.36%
Block: 0.52%
Total Avoidance: 4.24%

Timewarden's
Armor: 1019 + 20 from AGI = 1019 = 8.29% Dmg Reduction
STA: 57 + 30 = 87
AGI: 0 +10 = 10
DEF: 18R = ~7 = 0.28% (M/D/P/B/Cr)
Block: 0R + 0.28% from DEF = 0.28%
Dodge: 11R + 0.40% from AGI + 0.28% from DEF = ~1.26%
Parry: 0R + 0.28% from DEF = 0.28%

Summary:
870 HP
Dmg Reduc: 8.29%
Miss: 0.28%
Dodge: 1.26%
Parry: 0.28%
Block: 0.28%
Total: 2.10%

Throw in 1 Subtle Living Ruby (+8 Dodge) and that brings it up to:
Dodge: 1.68%
Total: 2.52%

Two Subtle Living Rubies?
Dodge: 2.10%
Total: 2.94%

THREE Rubies?
Dodge: 2.53%
Total: 3.37%

At this point, for about 120-135g worth of gems on my server, you've created Resolute Defender's -0.87% Avoidance + 150HP, or a chest HP enchant. In other words, don't do this! Of course, if you can afford the knock to your avoidance without becoming vulnerable to crushing blows, put three +12 stamina gems in there for a huge 1230 HP on one piece. The trade comes out to about 50% less avoidance for 59% more HP, a fair trade if you are way out of reach of crushing blows, but until then stick with Resolute Defender's IMO while you are still reaching to that 102.4%.

Wow, all these long comments about tank stats. Now for something important.

These pants are blue with red patterns. It was pretty hard to find a tabard to match, but Sha'tar tabard comes pretty close. Pick it up for 90s when exalted.

You'll give up ~20 stam, 6 block value and 7 dodge (if you get the felsteel socket bonus) but you'll gain 15 defense and 238 armor. Well worth it to me, especially considering how incredibly easy it is to come up with 110g in Outlands.

Now with the pally buff in 2.3 we get a grand total of 16% more stamina from items! Meaning if we socket these with
3 solid stars of elune (36 stamina)
put clefthoof leg armor on(+30 stam and +10 agi)
we would get
123 stam times 1.16
which = 142 stam!
Thats pretty much 1420 health on these.

I like these legs and I recommend them to any prot warriors that don't have the badges for Unwavering Legguards, great stamina, good armor, and it's got some decent avoidance.

I've been looking for upgrades as I recently hit 70 with my Paly and I've come to a conclusion about these VS Resolute Defender. By the time I or anybody else is tanking Bosses that crush, you will most certainly not be wearing either of these pants. I have pretty good gear, but I am getting pummeled in heroics because I am not at 13K HP or more. My def is over 500, I like having the extra avoidance you get from the Def rating without really having to work for it. But I am still technically crushable. I really don't think that matters at this point. By the time I am tanking those bosses I'm sure I will have either badge reward pants or Kara pants from being an offtank, as none of the trash mobs crush.

I decided to go for these pants and fill the slots up with Sta avoidance/sta gems. I may never hit uncrushable in them but I'll have 1420 HP as someone calculated vs 720 from Resolute. This for a difference of less than 2% avoidance.

Enduring Talesite: 4 Def 6 Sta
Regal Nighteye x2: 8 Dodge 12 Sta

Armor 1019+102(toughness)=1121
Sta (57+30+18)+16% (Sacred Duty&Combat Expertise) =105+16.8 =121.8= 1218 HP
Dodge 8+11=19
Def 4+18=22
Block Value 6

I don't typically socket for the Bonus, only if it benefits my build and in this case I think it's worthwhile. Nice armor, nice avoidance, and great Sta.
