Make sure to get Rank 2 BEFORE you do Mechagon HC/NM, you won't loot those if you're not Rank 2.

Sprockets do drop from heroic mode, apparently without weekly or even daily restriction. I managed to get the 3 I was missing today by farming the operation mecagon workshop. I can't confirm that they drop from the junkyard, if anybody got insight, please share the knowledge.
I got them on my 5th, 7th and 11th run. Don't give up, you'll get that juicy rank 3 !

As of 8.3, you can get Rank 1 and Rank 2 and Rank 3 in the same ~~week~~ nay, ~~day~~, nay, few hours!.

Queue for Heroic, kill King.
Go to Chamber of Heart, learn Rank 1.
Queue for Heroic, kill King.
Ask to be teleported out, teach Pasqual, craft Rank 2.
Learn Rank 2 in Chamber of Heart.
Queue for Heroic, Kill King - repeat probably 12 times? My luck has the drop at ~30%

Got from both types of Mythic+ versions of Mechagon. Got 1+1+2 out of three runs. No idea why I got 2 on the last run but it was a 3 chested +6.

As of 8.3, these seem to drop on Mythic+ difficulty from both Mechagon: Junkyard and Mechagon: Workshop.

Let me clear this up based on everything I could find on this topic. First, you must have rank 2 of the Vision of Perfection essence before the sprockets will drop for rank 3. Next, there are 3 versions of Mechagon that have been mentioned regarding progression sprocket drops for rank 3 Vision of Perfection essence. They are heroic, mythic, and mythic hard mode. Originally, the sprockets were a 100% drop which included 1 sprocket from King Mech on mythic and 2+ on mythic hard mode. Currently, with Mech mythic keystones more may drop at higher keystone levels, but I do not have that information.

I made 20 heroic runs and did not get a single sprocket drop and have seen posts from other players with the same result. Therefore I believe the drops were the result of a bug from a previous patch that has since been fixed. Good luck on getting your rank 3, and hopefully I will get mine as well.

So, i just farmed around 7 times heroic workshop and Progession Sprocket only dropped once.
Then after that i thought screw it, lets go M+ keystone workshop...

Droprate of M+ workshop = 100%
Got my rank 3 after 3 quick M+ runs.

I ran 5 Mechagon HC dungeons last night, the first dungeon didn't give me anything. The last 4 gave me one progression sprocket each time.
I'm not sure about the drop rate, but I was incredibly lucky as I know people have had to run the dungeon for 30+ something to get all four.

I did it today on heroïc only, the drop rate of 21% seems accurate, i had to do around 20 runs. It's a lot but on the bright side it's a really fast dungeon wing.

Farm this in m+
in m+ (even +2) the droprate is 100%, while the droprate in hc is only about 20%
it is really easy to find a group for a low key, and workshop is really fast

I'm pretty convinced Blizz is trying to make you run mythics for these. I did 16 Heroic runs and had zero drops of this, I also only saw it drop for other people around twice (course I don't know how many were looking for it, but from talking to them I can guess quite a few).

I ran one Mythic zero (full run with no keys) and one dropped.

edit: I ran it once on my Warr too (Mythic 0, no keys, full run) and got 2 x sprockets in one run.

edit2: Ran it on another toon (Mythic 0, no keys, full run) and got 1 x sprocket.

So that's 0 % running 16 Heroics and 100% running three Mythic. So I'm pretty confident it's a guaranteed drop, at least 1, on Mythic.

Yeah maybe it's me or stupid rng, but the skew is pretty dramatic and the comments from others here back me up.

One thing that's really annoying about this is I can't find a way to just do a Mythic Zero of Workshop, you have to run Junkyard too. You can do a Mythic++ of Workshop or Junkyard though, and according to comments above it will drop in both.

So no good answer really (unless you are a Mythic++ runner, then it's a no brainer and you likely have them all already):

You can do Heroic grinding and it may take forever. But they are super quick.
You can do Mythic zero (no key) and have to run the entire Mythic (both Junkyard and Workshop). This takes a lot longer than a Heroic run, but it looks like the odds of getting one of these to drop are much higher.
You can do Mythic++ with your key or someone else and just run Junkyard or Workshop and have a chance to get these (possibly more than one) at the chest at the end

I got mine completed last night, 35 runs, so that's roughly 1/9 chance to drop. Though, my teammate who got his via Mythics said the drop rate is higher, where he got his completed after six runs.

(Though it's apparently 100% drop rate in mythic, according to some comments here?)

I have read quite a few horror stories regarding drop rates on this item. I must be very lucky because I'm looting them pretty well. I'd say I've picked up three of 4 in about 8 or 9 runs, all heroic.

They drop in the end chest of the dungeon in Mythic +. If you are lucky, you can have 2 in a run. Both mechagon Area (junkyard & workshop) drop this item. going in Heroic mode seems a waste of time. (forgive my english i 'm french^^)

Low-level mythics are the way to go for these. Went 2/8 in heroics, then switched to mythic (+2 and 4) and went 2/2

This is a 100% drop rate during any level M+ Workshop Keystone. It'll save you plenty of time if you find people with a +2 Keys rather than relying on the 18% drop rate from Heroic spam.
