This key allows entry to most of the gates within Stratholme.

With this key, you can take the back enterence into Stratholme, making a Baron run less of a hassle.

The mob that drops this key only drops one for the whole party, so it may drop a few times before you win it. The mob that drops this is off to the right of the gate that takes you to where the Rammstein event occurs.

The Magistrate, right next to the gate in front of Baron's house, drops this. Only one can be found, and it allows you to go into Strat the back way. Drops almost every time, and it isn't that hard to get.

It does drop everytime... that you have someone in the run who needs it.

If you already have one then you won't SEE the roll again, you can see in the roll/passing in the loot dialog you will never again see it drop. So to say "almost" every time means that you already have one and don't know if it dropped again, or everyone in your run had a copy so it won't be seen by anyone there.

Last night we had one person in the run who didn't have it, we knew this because he was the only one able to pass, so we told him to pick it up.

If none of your group members have the key, you have to take long way through Startholme (Entrance Front) and Magistrate Barthilas will spawn at the back entrance (#7 on the map).

If you have entered Strat from the back (Entrance Side), Magistrate will spawn at the Baron's gate.

Curiously, in CoS you can see the service gate present. If you have the key, you could thereotically unlock the gate- but fog of war blocks you off before you reach it.

Just as a helping hand. Since the new LFG dungeon finder, you CAN enter through the service gate without the key. But, make sure someone in your party has the key, or you won't be able to get to the end.

Essentially, if you go through the service entrance, the mob to drop the key is behind a gate you need the key for.

I just wasted an hour and twenty minutes with a party because of this.

It is no longer possible to go from the live side (main gate entrance) to the undead side as the Festival Lane gate does not function. The live and undead sides are now two separate instances. Magistrate Barthilas does not drop the Key to the City, which I believe has been taken out of the game. But this is all right, because the Eastwall Gate service entrance no longer requires a key.

Yes, this key has been removed, along with a number of other keys that were required to unlock gates to get into a dungeon. Also, the achievement The Keymaster has been removed.

The key has been removed. Instead you need to kill the first 4 bosses Baroness Anastari, Nerub'enkan, Maleki the Pallid and Magistrate Barthilas
But with the first 3 it's not enough to kill them, you have to go inside their little... "Home" and kill the mobs inside there.. Once done you're home free to go kill Rivendare

The key just dropped for me on my lv 50 Undead Priest. It says it's no longer in game, but I just got it on her... I never had it drop on any other of my characters and I run this dungeon almost daily. Huh, strange..

Amusingly enough, this does appear to have a 100% chance to drop from Magistrate Barthilas, and disappears from your bags when you leave the instance. It has no apparent use, and can be looted each time you run the instance due to its disappearance, despite its unique status.

Coincidentally, Liquid Gold in the same instance is still broken and will not allow looting the boxes despite the ever-annoying sparkles.

I'm led to wonder if they've done something stupid with the entire instance, or somehow confused those two when playing with nothing at all relevant to it.

I've seen about 5 of these drop today in about 8 dungeon runs. Shame it's no longer needed because I was really excited when it dropped on my lowbie Shammy and I saw that it was green quality.

This Key dropped for me today in a random gold run.

Then it vanished the moment I used my soul stone to port....creepy thing to happen with an item obtained from a ghost infested instance.

To clear up some confusion:
Yes, this key still drops as of 5.2.
Yes, it is green quality and can be rolled on need or greed if in a party.

It has no use anymore except bragging rights while still in your instance group. Once you leave your instance group, it will be removed from your bags automatically and you may roll on it once again the next time you down Magistrate Barthilas. Personally, I suggest rolling need on it and rubbing it in your party members' faces. Tell them it opens the Baron's secret safe. Enjoy.

This item is still currently available in game as of patch 5.3, but there isn't any point in having it anymore; it doesn't sell for anything so you don't need to bother picking it up.

Dear Blizz,

Please either remove item from game, make it vendor able, a quest item, or actually open something.

Current just takes up bag space. You can only carry one at a time, any additional get mailed to character and can't be retrieved until one in bag is deleted.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems hilariously paradoxical that you need to get this key to drop in order to access The Gauntlet, but that's where it drops. Every time I use the Service Entrance, my character gets ported to just inside the Main Gate (Crusader's Square) entrance. So I have no idea how to get this key solo, and everyone else is off playing "who's the prettiest dragon."

Here's my findings as of 11.0.2.

If you have never looted this key, then the service entrance will just send you to the main entrance live side. You can still access the service dead side by running from the main entrance along the right path and going through the large double gates.

If you have ever looted the key on any character in the past then the service entrance will work and take you to the dead side as you would expect.

The key will disappear from your inventory once you log out but that shouldn't matter since your account will forever be able to use the service entrance properly anyway.
The key will still drop regardless so after the first time you loot it, it's safe to destroy/vendor
