The War Within will be using an item upgrade system similar to the
Flightstones and Crests upgrade system
introduced in Dragonflight to upgrade the item levels of gear earned throughout the expansion. In this guide, we will cover the currencies involved in this system, how to earn them, and how they can be used to upgrade your gear.
Valorstones and Harbinger Crests Introduction
Throughout players' exploration of Khaz Algar, they will earn two gear upgrade currencies,
神勇石
and
Harbinger Crests
. These currencies are used to upgrade the item level of endgame gear earned throughout The War Within expansion.
These currencies were given new names for The War Within!
飞珑石
are now
神勇石
.
Awakened Crests
are now
Harbinger Crests
.
While the names might be different, the
functionality
of these currencies does not change!
Earning Valorstones and Harbinger Crests in The War Within
These currencies serve as the main upgrade method for the expansion and can be farmed.
Earning Valorstones
神勇石
are obtained from a variety of activities throughout The War Within: open world events and quests, completing Mythic+ dungeons, defeating Raid bosses, completing Delves, etc. There is a simple trend: As players play the game and participate in the content, they will passively earn themselves
神勇石
, with the harder difficulty content rewarding more Valorstones upfront.
There is no cap to how many
神勇石
players can earn in a week, however, players are
capped to a maximum of 2,000 Valorstones at a time
.
Earning Harbinger Crests
Earning Harbinger Crests is a little more specific as there are
4 tiers
of Harbinger Crests to earn:
Weathered
Carved
Runed
Gilded

Upgrading Gear in The War Within
Upgrading endgame gear in The War Within costs a certain amount of
神勇石
and depending on the upgrade track of the gear, a certain type of
Harbinger Crest
.
Gear Upgrade Tracks
Each piece of gear in The War Within has an upgrade track. The tracks limit how high you can upgrade gear, meaning players will need to complete higher difficulty content to earn higher item level gear. Here are the upgrade tracks for gear in The War Within:

Gear Upgrade Vendors
There are two relevant gear upgrade vendors:
库佐尔兹
and
瓦斯卡尔恩
.
库佐尔兹
will upgrade your item levels, and
瓦斯卡尔恩
allows players to exchange crests. These vendors are located in
多恩诺嘉尔
in the
Mythic Aspirations
shop at /way 51.8 42.1.
Cuzolth and Vaskarn
Using Valorstones and Harbinger Crests to Upgrade Gear
Upgrading gear will cost
Valorstones
and a certain crest to increase the item level. For the upgrade tracks where crests are involved, each step up in item level will cost
15 crests
and a
certain number of Valorstones
. The number of Valorstones required depends on the item slot and item level of the piece of gear, with weapons typically costing the most Valorstones. At an item upgrade vendor, select the item you want to upgrade and it will display the upgrade costs associated with that upgrade.
Upgrade costs are displayed towards the bottom
Valorstone and Harbinger Crests Discounts
For any item slot, once you obtain a certain item level, future upgrades will come with discounts up to that item level! The
Valorstones discount is Warbind-wide
while the
Harbinger Crest discount is NOT Warbind-wide until certain achievements are earned
.
Earning the Warband Crest Discount
As mentioned above, earning the
Warband Crest Discount
requires players to earn certain achievements on a character in their Warband:
风化先驱
: Reach 593 item level in every armor slot.
蚀刻先驱
: Reach 606 item level in every armor slot.
符文先驱
: Reach 619 item level in every armor slot.
鎏金先驱
: Reach 639 item level in every armor slot.
The Warband Crest Discount cuts Crests down by
a third of the costs
. So if an upgrade usually costs 15 Crests, it will now costs 10 Crests with the Discount.
Using Harbinger Crests for Profession Crafting
Enchanters are able to use Harbinger Crests to create
Enchanted Crests
. Enchanted Crests can be used to craft higher item level gear up to
636 item level
!

Is the mentioned 30% discount for alts once a character no longer needs a tier of crests live? They mentioned it potentially being tied to an achievement like "dreaming of drakes" from Dragonflight but I've been unable to find a corresponding achievement for WW

You need to get to 610 ilvl to get the carved crest discount on alts. I personally really dislike this because it means you would have to have done one _runed crest_ upgrade on each piece of gear on a character to "outgrow" the carved crests. In reality, once your gear is 606 you no longer use carved crests to upgrade other gear to 606. In my mind this constitutes "outgrowing" carved crests.
This was patched, you now unlock the achievement upon hitting 606 instead of 610. You no longer need to spend runed crests to get the carved discount.

Veteran gear 8/8 only goes to 606, not 610.
