The talent system has always been a staple of World of Warcraft. In
Dragonflight
, WoW's ninth expansion, the talent system is reverting back to the Talent Tree paradigm. In this guide, we will go over the Dragonflight talent system overhaul, including how it works, what to expect, and how you may want to spend your Talent Points depending on what you enjoy playing.
The new Talent Tree system will be available in-game with the first phase of the Dragonflight pre-patch after weekly resets beginning on October 25th.

Overview of the Talent Tree System in Dragonflight
Talents in World of Warcraft have always been supplemental abilities and enhancements that increase the power of a base class. Now, with this new paradigm, players will be able to create their class, almost from the ground up. A few abilities remain baseline: utility, cosmetic, and a small number of very basic class functional abilities. After that, the player chooses the abilities and direction that a character grows; instead of being granted particular spells and abilities at predetermined levels, the player can select the direction they'd like their character to develop from a number of options on the Talent Trees. A new feature added with Talent Trees is a Talent Tree Loadout that will allow players to save different versions of their Talent Trees and swap between them easily.
The revamped Talent system is intended to both broaden and deepen every single specialization. Instead of picking an enhancement or ability every few levels, characters will start with a few baseline abilities, and build from there, selecting from current baseline abilities, current talents, and new abilities and enhancements. These new talents are inspired by borrowed power systems, like Artifact abilities from Legion, Azerite traits from Battle for Azeroth, and Covenant abilities from Shadowlands, along with traditional and new abilities.
PvP talents are not included in the Talent Trees. As before, they are supplemental talents, active in PvP content only.
When Will I Gain Access to the New Talent Trees?
All characters will be able to choose a specialization and gain access to the new Talent Trees at level 10, except for Evokers who will open the Talent Tree during their starting experience.
Do I Have to Spend Talent Points for Spells and Abilities that Have Been Baseline?
Many active abilities have been moved to the talent tree. This means characters will learn significantly fewer spells passively while leveling, instead allowing a choice of the spells or abilities learned at each level. This will give players extraordinary breadth in their character design. For times when your only interest is throughput, there will be recommended builds, of course, but for times when you may need other abilities you now have much more leeway in choosing what will work for your situation.
The Talent Tree System in Dragonflight
Every character will have two talent trees to fill out, one for their
Class
, and one for their
Specialization
. At maximum level each character will have 31 points to spend in their Class tree and 30 points to spend in their spec tree. In addition, Talent Tree builds can be saved and switched on the fly, so players can customize their Talent Trees for different content easily.
The
Class
talent tree is focused on utility talents that can be used by your class and is effectively the same for each specialization of a class. Minor differences include different free starting talents for different specs, and minor changes for spells where specs have a different spell that serves a similar purpose. An example of this is the Mage Class Tree where each spec will see the Class Tree start with a barrier spell, for Arcane it is
棱光护体
, for Fire it is
烈焰护体
, and for Frost it is
寒冰护体
.
The
Specialization
talent tree focuses on the role or strengths and abilities of each specialization, and changes completely based on which spec you currently have active.
Talents are distinguished by different
talent types
, providing more information about how each talent functions.
Square
talents are active abilities
Round
talents are passive effects
Octagonal
talents are choice nodes; you will be able to choose one of two talents. You will never be able to have both talents.
A search function allows you so find a specific Talent quickly.
PvP Talents
PvP talents, as well as the War Mode toggle, are placed at the bottom right corner of the new Talent Tree pane. There are no substantial changes to the way PvP talents work; you are able to choose a total of 3 PvP talents which will only be enabled in PvP instances or in the world with War Mode on.
Gaining Talent Points
In Dragonflight, you'll be granted talent points as you level up your character:
Once you reach level 10 and gain access to the new talent trees, you'll gain
1 Class Point
.
After that, each level will grant you one additional talent point,
alternating between 1 Class Point and 1 Specialization point
.
At the level cap of 60 in Shadowlands, you'll have a total of
26 Class Talent Points and 25 Specialization Talent Points
to spend.
In Dragonflight, with the level cap increased to 70, you'll have a total of
61 Talent Points
to spend -
31 Class Talent Points and 30 Specialization Talent Points
.
With a total of 61 Talent Points available for your character in Dragonflight, you will be able to fill approximately two-thirds of both Class and Specialization talent trees, enough to obtain most of talents you need, but with still enough leeway that some planning is required to get everything you might want.
Spending Talent Points
As mentioned, you have a total of 31 Class Talent Points and 30 Specialization Talent Points to spend. Talents are selected starting from Row 1 at the top of the tree to Row 10 at the bottom of the tree. You do not have to select talents from the bottom rows if you have spent all of your points above.
You must spend 8 points in the first 3 tows to access the 4th row.
You must spend 12 points in Rows 1 through 7 to access the 8th row.
All talents are connected to one or more other talents by an arrow shaped connector. The uppermost talent must be selected before connected talents can be added. Often Passive talents will have multiple ranks to spend points on. All ranks of a talent must be selected before you can move on to subsequent connected talents.
A talent that is outlined in green is available to spend a point on.
A talent that is outlined in yellow has been selected and is complete.
A talent that is greyed out needs a prerequisite filled before it can be selected.
Check that connected talents above have been selected and are yellow. If one is still green you will need to spend another point or two in it to turn it yellow.
Make sure that you have fulfilled the breakpoints: spend 8 points to access Rows 4 through 7, spend 12 points to access Rows 8, 9, and 10.
What you need to know about the Talent Tree Interface:
Talents are
learned by left-clicking
on them; the Talent Point is applied when you click.
To remove a Talent selection, right-click
on it; your Talent Point will be refunded.
If you remove a Talent with dependencies, the dependencies will be removed but will be marked with a blue border.
Shift-left-clicking
that Talent will relearn all of the marked dependencies. To clear the history, right-click on a marked Talent.
To clear a section,
remove (right-click) the first talent in that section
; to clear all talents and start over, click the
reset icon
next to the
Apply Changes
button.
Changing Talent Points
Changing Talents is free
and can be done anywhere out of combat:
No need for a rest area or Tome
. You can even switch Talents while flying! There are two exceptions to this.
You cannot change Talents while in a PvP match
You cannot change Talents while in an active Mythic+ run
There is a short cast time to activate your changes and you are good to go.
Baseline Spells, Abilities, and Talents
Spells that are remaining baseline are non-combat utility, cosmetics, and your most basic Class abilities. All racial traits and abilities are also baseline. Each specialization starts with at least one free baseline Talent from the Class Talent Tree.

Talent Loadouts
The Talent Loadout system is new feature that allows players to save different versions of their Talent Trees and swap between them easily. Each character is allowed a
maximum of 10 Saved Loadouts
across all specs. This means that if you can't create a new Loadout, you may need to switch specs and delete one to make room.
You can
name and save
Talent Loadouts
You can
edit and delete
Talent Loadouts
A Talent Loadout automatically
includes your action bars
by default and switches them based on your Loadout.
Loadouts are obviously spec specific. Any Loadouts that you build for a spec will
only be visible to that spec
.
When you swap specs, your
last selected Talent Loadout
will automatically be active.
You can
Import and Export Talent Loadouts
, making them easy to share between players or characters.
Note
: PvP talents and Warmode are
not
included in the Talent Loadouts.
While changing Talents incurs a short cast time, switching Loadouts is almost instant. As with Talent changes, changing Loadouts is free and can be done anywhere outside of combat, an active Mythic+ run, or a PvP match.
The Talent Loadout Starter Build
If you don't want to mess with the Talent Trees, the game provides a standard
Starter Build
for each spec that should be adequate to get you up and running. This is a very basic all-purpose build which is not intended to maximize your performance but should be decent in most non-competitive content.
For new characters, the Starter Build teaches you the very basics of the system as you level. When you have Talent Points to spend, the Talent that the Starter Build wants you to select will be highlighted.
If you select that talent, you can move on. If you select something different, you will be warned that you are deviating from the Starter Build. You then have the option of returning to the chosen path, or forging your own way. You can always go back to it. Activating the Starter Build is as easy as just selecting it from the dropdown menu.
You cannot change the Starter Build, but you can use it as a base from which to create your own build. To do this:
Select Starter Build from the dropdown menu
Select New Loadout from the dropdown menu
Name your Loadout
Click Save
Make any changes you like to the Talent trees - make sure you spend all of your points
Click Apply Changes
Note
: If you modify and save the Starter Build, it will save as a "Default Loadout." You can use this Loadout, but if you switch to a new loadout or back to the Starter Loadout it will be lost. If you care about keeping a Loadout, always select
New Loadout
, name it, and
Apply Changes
.
Editing and Deleting Talent Loadouts
To edit or delete a Talent Loadout, hover over the name of the Loadout. You will see a cogwheel icon appear to the right of the name. Click the cogwheel.
Clicking the cogwheel will open the edit pane. Here you can:
Rename your Talent Loadout
Toggle the Shared Action Bars feature
Delete your Talent Loadout
The Shared Action Bars feature
A Talent Loadout automatically includes your action bars by default and switches them based on your Loadout. Editing a Talent Loadout gives you access to a check box to enable Shared Action Bars. All Talent Loadouts that have this feature checked will share the same Action Bars.
Importing and Exporting Talent Loadouts
Talent Loadouts can be Imported and Exported. This is done using a saved code. Once again, access these features from the Talent Loadouts dropdown menu.
Clicking
Import
will open a dialogue box that will allow you to paste a Talent Loadout code from your clipboard. This allows you to add a Loadout from another character or spec, or from a friend or community resource such as the Wowhead Talent Calculator. As always, only paste codes from a trusted source.
Once you have pasted your code, you can name, save, and use your new Talent Loadout.
Clicking
Share
will save your Talent Loadout code to your clipboard. You can then paste it in the Import box for another character or spec and share with friends and applications. You can also paste it into the Wowhead Talent Calculator so that you can play about with it out of game.
You can create your own build and export it into the game using our Draognflight talent calculator. Import, modify, build, and export Talent Loadout codes with this handy tool.
Wowhead Dragonflight Talent Calculator
Our Dragonflight class guides provide the best PvE builds for both Raid and Dungeon content. A one-click export option allows you to load our recommended build for your specialization straight to your character in game.

Talent Tree Revamp FAQ
Here are some frequently asked talent tree questions with responses straight from Blizzard. We have posted the most important questions not already covered in the guide, but you can check their full talent tree FAQ in our news article.
WoW Dragonflight Talent Revamp FAQ - Blizzard Answers Player Questions
Can I get all of the talents in the class and spec tree?
No, you will not be able to obtain every talent in these trees. Similar to the current system, max-level builds will have to make decisions about what to include and exclude.
Can I spend points in a spec tree that is different from my current spec?
No, you will not be able to spend points in a spec tree different from your own. Using the Druid Talents as an example: If you put points into the Restoration Druid tree, and swap to Balance Druid, the effects from the Restoration tree will no longer apply to you. You will have new points to spend in the Balance tree!
Will some talents be in more than one specialization talent tree?
In situations this makes sense, yeah. For Druids, both Feral and Guardian might have their different versions of
狂暴
(Feral) /
狂暴
(Guardian), while Balance and Restoration Druids will not.
Will the class talent tree change at all when changing specs?
With very few exceptions, no changes should happen to your Class Talent Tree when changing your specialization. A change you might see is
反制射击
for Beast Mastery/Marksmanship Hunters, which will change to
压制
when speccing into Survival. They both serve the same function as an interrupt button, but they're themed differently and have different cooldowns.
Is the class tree just utility and the spec tree is where all of the throughput is?
No, there can definitely be some throughput-increasing talents in the class tree, but the spec tree likely has the majority of them. One of the main purposes of the class tree is to give you a place to explore parts of your class that are not focused on your main role’s throughput (such as utility, or abilities that are more closely connected to other specializations), so we limit the pressure to make throughput optimizations in the class tree.
Are all talent points new abilities?
No, most of them are existing things from the current or past game, but there are also new active and passive abilities in the new class and spec trees.
What about the abilities you gain when you level up in the new player experience on Exile’s Reach?
Exile’s Reach is remaining unchanged for the most part, you will still obtain many fundamental class abilities from completing the quests and this content. Your interaction with the new talent system will begin after you reach level 10.
What about some abilities that are super important for gameplay, such as interrupt abilities, that you don’t gain from the starting experience?
We are currently trying to focus as many combat-altering abilities as possible into the new talent trees. This can include things such as movement abilities, interrupts, dispels, hybrid healing options, defensive abilities, etc. Our goal is to set up the trees and paths so that there opportunities to choose between different types of utility, but not to, for example, abandon all utility choices entirely in order to maximize your DPS. If you choose not to have an interrupt, it is likely because you traded it out for some other type of utility or CC that you believed would be more useful in the situation. The inverse is also true—specializations that do not have a certain capability in Shadowlands (such as an interrupt) may be able to obtain it by giving up something they currently do have.
How much of my class is going to be in this talent tree compared to other add-on/extra systems like legendaries, covenants, conduits, soulbinds, etc?
We’re trying to put as much class related stuff as we can into this new talent system as a singular place to manage your character. There will still be some abilities that are granted to players from leveling up, but significantly fewer. We recognize that abilities such as Eyes of the Beast, or Astral Recall, or Teleport: Moonglade, aren’t combat altering choices you’re making, and you would be hard pressed to spend a talent point to obtain this ability again. Those abilities are not going away, they are not going to go in the talent tree, they will just be a bonus spell you get while leveling up. Other than that, we’re trying to put as many combat related abilities in the tree as we can, which does mean you are going to have to invest talent points into the system to get your current abilities back.
If a Shadowlands covenant or legendary ability is in the talent tree, and I also have that covenant ability or legendary equipped, what happens?
The plan currently is that these nodes will still exist in the talent tree and you can obtain them, but your Shadowlands covenant or legendary ability will override it. You won’t have multiple versions of the same spell to cast, or double stacked legendary effects or anything of the sort. Not every Shadowlands covenant ability, legendary, soulbind, or conduit effect will be staying in the talent tree.

Awesome, thanks for the good guide.
For me, this is by far the most anticipated change coming with Dragonflight.
I really really hope they'll add the Covenant abilities to the talent tree, I'd be so happy to keep Deathborne for my Mage.

Is the Holy Paladin tree bugged? It doesn't have a flowchart-style like the rest of the trees, it's just a single vertical row of "choose this or that" paladin talents, and the holy sections is just rows.

Was the Holy Paladin tree not released yet? I checked the beta paladin tree and you have ret you have prot but you don't have holy?

"With very few exceptions, no changes should happen to your Class Talent Tree when changing your specialization."
Does this mean when we change specs, the class talent points remain where you've placed them? So, as an example, if you play balance druid for raiding/M+, but feral for pvp, you'd have to redo your class talent tree each time you change specs? I'd much rather the game remember my talent points that I've spent for each spec, so that when I switch back and forth everything is already set up.

The talent UI (or the talent calculator here) needs a way to pre-select via highlights talents that haven't been enabled by upper levels yet. It's very frustrating to try to form paths to your needed talents when you can't see them readily, especially in the darkened lower levels. I keep having to go back down and mouse over everything again to see where I need to go.
Ideally, let us build the tree in any order, with the icons at lower brightness (not enabled yet), then establish the linkages necessary to make them work.

I just did the talent builder for the BM Hunter, and as somebody so used to just picking from three choices, it's really overwhelming. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate it, though since I can at least get an idea of what to use. I'm glad to know that the actual game will have templates so, I might have an easier time.

This article is really outdated or just has completely wrong information. There aren't any static talents, the two choice talents aren't active/passive they can be both passive, both active or a combination of the two.

I wish I didn't have to export > log out > log in > import to save a spec across my various alts. It'd be nice to be able to save a "shared" spec across multiple alts that is available from the pull-down menu.

So lots of talents mention Holy Fire, but Holy fire isn't on the tree, and it's not on the list of base abilities. Should I assume that it's a level-up ability and it just got left out?

For people with Alts - and who sometimes play them - the limit of only 10 loads is seriously limiting. At most you can play only one spec per character? Or am I missing something.
Seems limiting especially when each class and spec can have multiple builds depending on what you want to do with it. I mean for my druid healer there's four or five loadouts alone which means I've only five places left, for three specs, that can have two minimum (Raid and Mythic) per set up...
Blizz needs to up the number of loadouts (figure a baseline 2 per spec in each class) or take out the limit all together, IMO.

If there is a max of 10 saved talent setups per toon (as I interpreted it, rather than over my entire set of alts), it would be very helpful to at least have a counter saying how many slots have been filled up as I go mad trying out various builds for various classes of the same toon.
The number seems low anyhow, for example, the Raid guide has several talent tree builds suggested -PER BOSS- with variations for Mythic - with 8 bosses, we would instantly run out of space if we couldn't decide in advance exactly which build we wanted to use where.
Oh: and as a person who likes to use fairly similar layouts on my bars, it would be nice to be able to edit the shared action bar somewhere? I have not tried the Shared Action bar toggle because, duh, different talent sets add & remove talents and I have no clue where they would land and if it would be consistent.

After leaving the game after several disappointing expansions I love these talent trees! Nearly everything feels rewarding and getting a talent leveling up is great glad they went back to this model.
